FROM THE PRESIDENT

DEAR FRIENDS Ron Matsen President & CEO, Koinonia House

O

ver the past few years of working with Chuck Missler, people have asked me, “What will happen to Koinonia House when he is gone?” With Chuck’s official retirement announced more than two years ago, we at Koinonia House have been busily engaged in putting in place a structure that would serve this ministry for years to come. We have considered this pending phase by examining this process as revealed in Scripture and as attempted by other Christian organizations. We have found that there are generally two models for ministry continuation experiences that we can draw from. The first is that of replication. This style of ministry transfer assumes that the method of ministry can and will be transferred from one person to another— just as Moses was followed by Joshua and Elijah was followed by Elisha. Our natural problem here is…there was only ONE Chuck Missler. The second type of ministry continuation is that of reproduction. Here we see the model of producing disciples that then in turn create disciples, that then in turn create disciples, and so on. We believe this reproduction model of ministry continuation is the one Jesus Himself followed. In fact, the whole idea of the Body of Christ is manifested in diversity, and subsequent strength, within His Church today. The mission of Koinonia House is still to provide tools and encouragement to the Body of Christ so that its members can be fully equipped for every good work. Our prayer is that Chuck’s life, ministry, and message will energize the lives of those who have found the same excitement that the Bible is “Sixty-six books written by forty authors over two thousand years and yet we find that it is an integrated message system from outside our time domain.” In HIS service, Ron Matsen

OBITUARY

CHARLES W. MISSLER Koinonia House Announces Death of Founder Reporoa, NZ — Koinonia House announces the death of its Founder and retired Board Chairman, Dr. Charles W. “Chuck” Missler. He was 83 years old, and passed away peacefully at his home in Reporoa, New Zealand. He was preceded in death by his wife Nancy and his two sons, Charles “Chip” and Mark. He is survived by two daughters, Lisa Bright and Meshell Missler, and eight grandchildren. Two Careers in One Lifetime Dr. Missler was fond of saying that he enjoyed two careers following his graduation from the United States Naval Academy and service in the armed forces: leading edge technology ventures and biblical studies. Truly, the passion of his life was the encouraging of others to commit to the serious study of the Bible as the inerrant Word of God. Biblical Studies and Koinonia House Dr. Missler gained international recognition as a Bible scholar, author and teacher. Through an informal affiliation with Calvary Chapel of Costa Mesa, California, Chuck became known for his insight into the integration of Scripture with science, history and prophecy. Over more than forty years, literally millions of Dr. Missler’s teachings have been distributed and enjoyed. From cassette tapes to MP3 audio down loads, from VCR tapes to YouTube videos, the message of “The Grand Adventure” has been enjoyed by many. American Technology Ventures During his thirty-year business career, Chuck served on the Board of Directors of over a dozen public companies, and was Chairman VOLUME 28 | ISSUE 06 |

and Chief Executive Officer of five of them. Dr. Missler received a Congressional appointment to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. Upon graduating with honors, he received his commission in the U.S. Air Force. When he had completed his military obligations, he became Branch Chief of the Department of Guided Missiles at Lowry Air Force Base. Chuck completed a Masters Degree in engineering at UCLA with additional post-graduate studies in applied mathematics, advanced statistics, and information sciences; he completed his PhD at Louisiana Baptist University. His civilian career began as a systems engineer at TRW, followed by a Senior Analyst position in a “think tank serving both the intelligence community and the Department of Defense. Recruited by the Ford Motor Company into a Senior Management position, Chuck established the first international industrial computer network in 1966. Leaving Ford to start his own company, he founded a computer networking organization later acquired by Automatic Data Processing (NYSE) to become its Network Services Division. He subsequently served as a consultant to the Board of Directors of Rockwell International for corporate acquisitions (which included Collins Radio, American Data Systems, and others); and has also participated in over 100 business ventures as a principal, strategic advisor, or turnaround specialist. His final consultancy in the American technology sector was as an advisor to the Super-Wide Area Satellite (SWANsat) System, an international telecommunications venture. After being a lifelong citizen of the United States, Dr. Missler immigrated to New Zealand in 2010 where he resided with his wife Nancy. A celebration of life service will be held June 2, 2018, at 2p.m. at Candlelight Christian Fellowship, 5725 N. Pioneer Dr., Coeur d'Alene, Idaho 83815. A funeral/burial service will be held on 16 June, 2018 at the River Lodge, 394 Vaile Road, Reporoa, New Zealand at 1pm. 6

y dad taught me that life is an adventure. Dad opened the world to me through traveling or family ski trips. He was very adventurous… had his pilot’s license, scuba certified, skier, … Who moves to the other side of the world in their 70s? He loved jokes, pranks and treasure hunts: following various clues or maps to hidden destinations with a surprise treasure at the end of the journey. One Christmas, I had to find a bottle with a secret message buried on the beach at the Balboa Bay Club. Another year, my brother, Chip, had to go to the front desk of a fancy hotel and ask for an envelope for Gandalf (all the while my dad was giggling at our expressions). Spiritually, these treasure hunts continued in his Bible studies. I thank him for instilling in me the unequivocal fact that the Bible is the inerrant, Divinely inspired Word of God. eternity. Now, his other wall is labeled “Gold, Jewels, Precious Stones” and that wall displays all his Bible projects, books and discoveries. The fruit of those pursuits are what he is enjoying NOW. Think about the precious stones that are being illuminated to him with facets of light that we can’t even imagine! His death is not the end of his grand adventure, but just the beginning of his discovery of the infinite nature of God. He now knows exactly how old the earth is, and if there was a gap between Genesis 1:1 and 2. He is no longer counting down to eternity, but is in his completed destiny. He is no longer subject to the boundaries of reality: no longer bound by mass, acceleration and gravity… He is independent of the limitations of our 3 dimensional reality. He now knows exactly how many dimensions Mr. & Mrs. Flat are missing. Last I heard, he was thinking that there are 11 dimensions: 9 spatial and 2 time, or possibly Hilbert space – a hyperspace of infinite dimensions. Can you imagine his face as he discovers the answers to these questions? He can see the Seraphim and Cherubim! He now knows exactly where the Nephilim came from. He has a front row seat to the future events

that he studied so seriously. He will get to see eschatology play out like watching a movie, as he is now outside of time! He would say that his hardware is now obsolete, but his software has moved on to a newer, more perfect and indestructible state. He had faith in the unseen and now can see it! He completely understands the depth and repercussions of quantum physics; he can see how particles behave when unobserved… I am sure all sorts of hidden codes, scientific mysteries, foreshadows, symbolisms, parallels, and prophecies are being revealed to him…. He is now a little kid on the ultimate treasure hunt! Can you imagine what he is discovering as he digs up a bottle on a beach or asks for an envelope from the front desk? He is with our High Priest, our Mediator, Our Messiah, the One and only one who has redeemed him: Jesus Christ by whose blood all of his sins have been washed away and he has been reunited with Him in Heaven. If you want to honor my dad, he would tell you to take the Bible seriously. To check Acts 17:11 and make your priorities things not of this world, but of eternal value, learn your Bible and be in relationship with your Creator… store your treasure in Heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroy. Live out your life as a grand adventure with Jesus Christ! In God’s Love & Peace, Lisa (Missler) Bright

MY DAD

M

y dad was a truly amazing man. He never strived for “normal” but rather he would leave no stone unturned when it came to pursuing adventures in life. He would often tell me about the time when he asked my mother to marry him. He told her, “I cannot promise you that life will be easy, but I can certainly promise you our lives will be full of adventure.” My mom and dad had a deep and life-lasting love for one another. They traveled the world together, lived in many different places, from the beach to the mountains, from the United States of America to New Zealand; and just as my father promised my mother on the day he asked her to marry him, they certainly did experience many adventures throughout their lives together. My father was a man blessed by God with many talents and virtues. As I reflect on his life and everything he accomplished, I can clearly see how his talents and Gods anointing have had their impact on my life, as well as on the lives many others. One virtuous characteristic was his ability to handle any crisis or catastrophic adversity. My dad would get on his knees and pray and ask God for His help. It was when our family was VOLUME 28 | ISSUE 06 |

facing the biggest challenges, that my father was the most wonderful and comforting. He would immediately say, “As long as you are o.k. and not hurt, we can handle the rest, we will be alright”. I remember him saying things for example, “if financial problems are your worst problems, then you’re doing pretty good.” The deeper meaning here is life can dole out problems that money cannot solve. For me, his perspective on life’s biggest issues was priceless. My father was not afraid of change. He would press on into any new venture with such enthusiasm. Throughout my life, I remember my dad introducing me to the thrill of trying something new, to bravely embrace an extreme sport or an unfamiliar experience, and to study or observe intriguing new concepts or ideas. I have so many memories to pull from – things like snow skiing in the mountains of Canada, boating on the Pacific Ocean, flying in airplanes above the clouds, or studying the stars in the night’s sky. My father’s interests and hobbies were wide and varied. He taught us to embrace all the good things in life. His zest and zeal for life and having been exposed to so many different things and sharing these experiences with him have blessed my life. They will forever be kept close to my heart and in my loving memory of him. Now it is easy to get swept away in the excitement of pursuing all of the good things this life has to offer; and to revel in the vigor and the exuberant spirit that was such an innate part of my father and who he was; but he would be the first to tell you that there is nothing in this world that he was more excited about than the discoveries that he would find daily reading his Bible. The Bible is God’s word. It is a book we are so blessed and fortunate to keep in our homes and have the freedom to read and draw knowledge and spiritual nourishment from daily. If we read and study every day for the rest of our lives, we can feel confident knowing that we will always find some new treasure. Whether it be expanding on our own comprehension of the wisdom found in the Bible or experiencing a personal touch or word in our relationship with our Creator. God always wants to reveal Himself to us and I feel so blessed having had an earthly father who loved and studied the scriptures as he did. 16

I can remember how my dad’s excitement would pour out of him during family dinners whenever he would find a new discovery in the Bible. As many of you know, my dad can be heard on the radio where many of his studies and teachings are broadcasted for those seeking to learn more about the word of God. I can remember hearing my father while on the radio or at a speaking engagement, and I couldn’t help but laugh to myself because of how fast or how quickly he was talking. I realized he was talking so hurriedly because he couldn’t wait to get his words out and share his new discoveries with all of you. I hope that my dad continues to inspire all of us. I hope that he continues to touch our lives by igniting that fire in knowing and learning how truly amazing God is; and no matter how much we read the Bible there are always going to be new lessons and new discoveries for those of us seeking God’s word and his instruction for our lives. I hope for anyone who is reading this now that you yourself have a deep and personal knowledge (knowing fully in your own heart) how amazing God is. We as Christians serve the God of this universe and He truly cares about every single detail of each of our lives. I am honored by the opportunity to write these words to you. I am so very proud of my dad for all the lives he has touched and all the lives that will continue to be touched by all his studies, teachings and materials that he has worked so hard on throughout his lifetime. For my dad, studying the Scriptures or preparing his weekly updates was never a laborious work for him. He would have said it was his hobby — a hobby that he absolutely loved to do. He would have said his pursuit of the scriptures was indeed his greatest, most exciting Grand Adventure. To those of you who are wounded by the cares of this life, or who may be struggling with the loss of a loved one — please let me encourage you. I am deeply, deeply saddened to have lost my father. I understand what it is like to have the ground shake beneath you. My family has been blessed, but we are also well acquainted with heartbreak of all kinds. Life can be hard. It can break you into pieces and bring you to your knees. I look around sometimes and there is no one to rely on. God is calling us to rely on Him, find our strength in Him, find our counsel in Him. … Lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.

Matthew 28:20

When we get depleted, discouraged and heartbroken, we must remember He is there — even when it might not feel like it. When there is no vivid answer to our petitions and prayers, nothing to see or grasp — this is when we need to fight. Push aside the discouragement and fan the flame of our faith to ignite that fire inside us. There is the Holy Spirit who lives inside us, ready and willing to help us, and He is more powerful than anything we are going through. When you recognize you are distressed, this is when you will understand what it means to be part of God’s army and become a fighting prayer warrior. Find strength in your heavenly father. We need to have confidence when life is nothing but chaos and calamity. God has strategies and a way to put you back on your feet, to redeem a life broken beyond repair and He sends his Holy Spirt to mend the fractured pieces within our hearts. I would encourage you to put your worship music on. It is amazing how worship can stir the spirit inside and give new hope for the future. Find your breath in the Scriptures. Forgive all the broken people who have betrayed or bruised you. There is so much freedom in forgiveness. You will find hope and new life by asking God to help; for He is the ultimate physician and healer. God can move any mountain and is worthy of our trust and worship; he desires us to live in the land of the living with joy and hope for the Grand Adventure of this life. 18

I will miss my dad, but I know that my dad is not dead. He is more alive now than ever before. He is alive in Christ. He is with Jesus now in Heaven. As he would say, he is now in another dimension of time. He is with God Almighty. I know that God is always with me. He is the great Comforter for all of us who have invited him into our hearts and lives. HE IS ALL we need. Agape, Meshell

I would like to share seven scriptures that have touched my heart and highlight the comfort we can find in times of trouble or times of loss: I am confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.

Psalm 27:13

Listen to this message from the Lord, you nations of the world; proclaim it in the distant coastlands. The Lord, who scattered his people, will gather them together and watch over them as a shepherd does his flock. For the Lord has redeemed Israel from those too strong for them. They will come home and sing songs of joy on the heights of Jerusalem. They will be radiant because of the many gifts the Lord has given them… their life will be like a watered garden, and all their sorrows will be gone…. I will turn their mourning into joy. I will comfort them and exchange their sorrow for rejoicing…. VOLUME 28 | ISSUE 06 |

Do not weep any longer, for I will reward you. Your children will come back to you from the distant land of the enemy. There is hope for your future…

Jeremiah 31:10

The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is upon me, because the Lord has appointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to comfort the broken hearted and to announce that captives will be released and prisoners will be freed. He has sent me to tell those who mourn that the time of the Lord’s favor has come… to all who mourn in Israel, he will give beauty for ashes, joy instead of mourning, praise instead of despair. For the Lord has planted them like strong and graceful oaks for his own glory…. Instead of shame and dishonor, you will inherit a double portion of prosperity and everlasting joy.

Isaiah 61

He comforts us, in all our troubles so that we can comfort others.

2 Corinthians 1:4

Let us go right into the presence of God with true hearts fully trusting him… for God can be trusted to keep His promise.

Hebrews 10:22

When I think of the wisdom and scope of God’s plan, I fall to my knees and pray to the Father, the Creator of everything in heaven and on earth. I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will give you mighty inner strength through his Holy Spirit. And I pray that Christ will be more and more at home in your hearts as you trust in him. May your roots go down deep into the soil of God’s marvelous love. And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love really is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is so great you will never fully understand it. Then you will be filled with the fullness of life and power that comes from God. Now glory be to God! By his mighty power at work within us, he is able to accomplish infinitely more than we would ever dare to ask or hope.

huck once penned these words in a Personal Update article entitled: A Friendly Whisper: The Most Painful Sin This is what he wrote: True Friendship “What is true friendship? A relationship that doesn’t require explanations. One that gives us the assurance of receiving the benefit of the doubt. A friend is one who is loyal and shuns any form of betrayal.”

Chuck Missler was a loyal friend, and a generous, big hearted, servant hearted, friend. He went out of his way for people. Don’t get me wrong, Chuck was just a man, talented, incredibly brilliant, but a sinner saved by the grace of God in Jesus Christ who was his Saviour. He loved the Word of God, and he loved the God of the Word. I have been asked as we travelled together over the years, “how does Chuck know the Bible so well?” My answer is always the same and true. Because he reads it! Yes, he studied. Yes, the Lord gave him deep insight VOLUME 28 | ISSUE 06 |

and understanding as he probed it’s depths. But he loved to begin his day in just sitting at Jesus’ feet as it were, reading his Bible. He loved to share as we talked, the nature and character of God because he knew and appreciated Him, because he was one who sat at His feet, listening for his “voice” as he read, and who, because he spent daily time with the Lord, actually knew Him. I was blessed in our friendship and all it encompassed and meant to us over the years. I was blessed to stand by his side in times of trouble, especially in the last few days and hours of his sojourn on earth. I was also blessed to stand by his side and witness what the Lord did through him in so many lives that were changed in both Australia and New Zealand. But most of all blessed in his example of sincere love for the God of the Bible. Blessed in our hours, and hours, and hours of talking about the Word. I will miss him for a while but know exactly where he is and am assured we will be together again. Brian Hughes Chuck’s Friend

DR. CHUCK MISSLER: A RETROSPECTIVE

n early May 2018, Koinonia House announced the death of Dr. Charles W. “Chuck” Missler, about the time that the Holy Bible: International Standard Version was being prepared for print publication.

Dr. Missler served on the board of directors of the ISV Foundation for about ten years, and personally contributed to the translation by the late Dr. Peter Flint of the ISV book of Isaiah from the Dead Sea Scrolls. I first met Chuck in mid-1992, having been introduced to him by Doug Mahr, one of the original founders of the New Age Movement. Doug had come to know Jesus the Messiah, largely as a result of Dr. Chuck’s teaching ministry.

BIO

A personal friend of Doug’s arranged for Doug and I to meet, and then Doug invited me to accompany him to one of Chuck’s teaching sessions at Calvary Chapel of Costa Mesa. At the time I met Dr. Chuck, I was still four years away from beginning my Super-Wide Area Satellite (SWANsat) System, an international telecommunications venture. After I began that project, Chuck was pleased to provide his final consultancy in the American technology business sector as an advisor to us. It wasn’t the technology consulting and encouragement for SWANsat that was the most valuable contribution made by him to my work. That distinction is reserved for his amazing discipline in the field of biblical studies and exposition.

In a word, the man was learned, if I may use a somewhat obsolete word to describe him. The word is obsolete, in my opinion, mainly because so few Christians—and even fewer Christian teachers—are so ignorant of the Scriptures. Chuck was a delightful exception. He constantly surprised me with the depth of his understandings regarding the nuances of the original languages of the Bible…and this from a man who had no formal training in Hebrew, Aramaic, or New Testament Koiné Greek. The highlight of the last ten years or so of my relationship with Chuck has been Chuck’s invitation to address the Strategic Perspective Conferences, held annually in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. I have fond memories of these experiences, including the memories of meeting dozens of Koinonia Institute students annually. I already miss the times of fellowship. We used to talk regularly between his New Zealand residence and my office in southern California. I look forward to seeing him again soon. Very soon. William P. CHUCK MISSLER

C

huck Missler has been one of the strong threads in the fabric of my spiritual wardrobe. Having been clothed in the righteousness of Christ and learning to “put on the new man” (Ephesians 4:24), I grew in my love and respect for Scripture by the example and teaching of Chuck Missler. I was saved in 1973 in a San Jose apartment after watching Billy Graham on an afternoon telecast. Soon thereafter, I moved back home to SoCal (Southern California) to get plugged into the only church I knew of at that time that was welcoming of young people, Calvary Chapel. Week after week I was nourished by the sound verse-by-verse bible teaching of pastor Chuck Smith, who took us through the entire Bible verse-by-verse and book-by-book. The messages were decidedly absent of junk food—no fluff, just straight up Scripture. We learned to view life through the lens of the scriptural text. While in the midst of pursuing a career in the medical field, someone handed me a set of cassette tapes by a guy named Chuck Missler. I thought I’d give them a listen. The white plastic package of messages was a series of teachings on the Old Testament book of Daniel. I can only describe the experience of listening to them as “jaw-dropping.” It was an explicit pivot point in my spiritual walk. Every day in my tiny San Bernardino apartment I listened as Chuck unfolded the magnificence of God’s Word—so intricately woven together with precision and providence. The message on Daniel 9—the backbone of biblical prophecy—was especially profound, so much so, that I decided to memorize it, every date, every number, every name. I would use this information for years to come. Since there were no Chuck Missler books at the time, and since I thought this teaching on Daniel should be in written form, I figured out a plan. I would play each one of those cassette tapes on a variable speed tape recorder at its VOLUME 28 | ISSUE 06 |

slowest speed and, for the next few months, type out every recorded message word for word. I’m happy to say I still have the very first Chuck Missler book in existence—a commentary on the book of Daniel, courtesy of my Corona typewriter! Some time later, living in Santa Ana, I had the privilege of meeting Chuck at church, as he and Nancy always sat in the same section of the church sanctuary for the Sunday evening service. When Nan told me that Chuck was doing a weekly Monday night bible study in the fellowship hall, I quickly made it a weekly staple. I attended and took notes. I invited friends and they took notes. The fellowship hall at church was packed out each week as Chuck shared his unique insights on scripture as only Chuck Missler could. He always insisted that his audience be like the Berean believers of Acts 17:11 who “searched the scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so.” I will never forget this admonition nor will I forget the frequency with which Chuck quoted it. At that time, he was juggling a full-time career in the business world while trying to meet the demands of his Bible class. It just kept growing as news of this exciting textual luminary got around. People just couldn’t get enough of it. Some nights Chuck would be landing at Orange County airport while I was leading the worship before the Bible study, and he would walk in just in time to pull out loosely scribbled notes he’d made before landing and teach his study without missing a single biblical beat. Those early days of Chuck’s Monday night ministry sharpened my thinking and shaped the course of my life. As his ministry skyrocketed in the 80’s and 90’s I was church planting in New Mexico, still being fed by Chuck Missler’s ministry by radio. I will always be 26

REMEMBRANCE

Paul D. Van Noy Candlelight Christian Fellowship Coeur d’Alene, Idaho

CHUCK MISSLER

T

wenty-two years ago I was asked to come from California to Idaho in order to teach and lead worship at Koinonia House. Chuck was away leading a tour to Israel, and I would be the guest speaker. Shortly thereafter, I was asked to move my family to Coeur d’Alene and join the K-House staff. At one point, Chuck asked me to begin teaching a Bible study on Thursday nights in the studio. With some hesitation, I agreed. I did not feel equipped to teach in a ministry that served the likes of those who followed the depth and style provided by Chuck Missler. At any rate, with encouragement from Chuck and Nancy, I began. To my surprise, Chuck and Nan attended the study, sat on the front row, and in a way only Chuck would do—took notes. Talk about intimidation—I could not have been more uncomfortable. Nonetheless, I taught, Chuck and Nancy listened, and invited others also. Twenty-one years have passed and I remain pastor at Candlelight Christian Fellowship here in Coeur d’Alene. It is the outgrowth and development of that small group I taught at K-House. Chuck wanted me to start a church and apparently so did the Lord. I don’t know what would have happened if Chuck hadn’t insisted I teach a Bible study. Over the years, Chuck attended Candlelight and supported us all along the way. We had our moments of disagreement, but in the end he loved me and I loved him. It was a good relationship. Chuck influenced my teaching and teaching style. He provided me with every K-House product I ever needed/wanted and always told those looking for a Bibleteaching church to come find Candlelight. Chuck was a Barnabas (son of encouragement) to me at a time when I needed him. I am ever grateful for his support, friendship, and love.

Chuck is at least in part responsible for the spiritual development of multitudes around the world, many churches, and the souls of men and women who have been introduced to the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. His God-given gifts have given apologetic support to the BIO thinking man and woman—and through which many Paul D. Noy have come to the faith. CHUCK MISSLER, FATHER TO A FAMILY OF BEREANS By Mary (Miller) Gehl, ND I was sitting in my office when I received the news that Chuck had passed away. Although the news was not unexpected, a sadness settled on my heart. Then I looked up and saw a coffee cup that still holds my pens and miscellaneous paraphernalia. It is a deep blue cup emblazoned with the white Koinonia Institute spyglass logo and the words: Acts 17:11, “Turning Believers into Bereans.” I smiled as a flood of memories came to my conscious mind. Chuck did indeed bring a generation of old and new Believers alike into a greater knowledge of the Scriptures. As we often joked, “Once you’ve attended a Chuck Missler course, you will never read the Bible or listen to a sermon in the same way again!” I was introduced to Chuck when I purchased a prophetic conference DVD from a ministry in Florida in 2006, a couple of months before my husband passed away. I purchased many of Chuck’s DVD’s believing I would have more time with my husband to study them together. I viewed most of them alone. However, those studies helped me during my time of grief. Chuck’s firm knowledge and faith in the Word of God, his unfettered vulnerability in sharing how God worked difficult times in his life for his good, and his desire to see everyone he met develop a deeper walk in all that God would purpose for them drew many to his commentaries and his strategic studies. Within a few months, I was blessed to come to Koinonia Institute in Idaho as an intern and later became an employee. My time under Chuck’s mentoring never felt like a job, but as a continuous adventure in discovery. Chuck was never satisfied with his perceived knowledge of Biblical topics. He had an uncanny ability to view the Scriptures from 10,000 feet to see the whole counsel of God from Genesis to Revelation; and then drill down to write pages of analysis of one verse. Chuck challenged everyone not to become a “Misslerite,” but to take everything he said to the Bible and to discover for ourselves what we determine to be true or not (Acts 17:11). With this simple philosophy, Chuck enabled and encouraged generations to develop and grow in individual relationships with God, in knowledge of God’s Word, and in firm foundations that will hold steady while the times in which we live are shaking the world. Chuck’s legacy will continue and lives will be touched with the many written and digital works he left behind to reach another generation. But for many of us, the Bereans Chuck helped to develop, his legacy as a father is far more personal. For me, my time with Chuck was capped with his very personal gesture of giving me away in marriage to a Godly man who I just happened to meet while he volunteered at Koinonia House. For me, I was restored from widowhood to a continuation of life for which I was being prepared. Though he will be greatly missed, I smile as I see Chuck restored to his precious Nan, and the Jesus he so loved… and I am sure he is diligently seeking out everyone for whom he had outstanding questions! We love you, Chuck! You still make us smile!

REMEMBERING CHUCK Paul Brand

Koinonia House

Chuck was someone who really appreciated the details – however small – that point to how amazing our Creator and Redeemer is. Besides his love for the Word, Chuck never took himself too seriously. He was always reminding us of Acts 17:11 to be like the Bereans and to check for ourselves whether what he said was true. He also had a playful side that sometimes came across in the recordings. He loved to “mouth” like he was talking during the microphone checks before recording just to see if we were paying attention. As someone who enjoyed a good pun as much as the next guy, I think Chuck was impressed when he would discover the Holy Spirit using puns in the text of the Bible. He loved how real the Bible is. He said he loved how when we read of Jesus’ 32

appearances after His Resurrection, but before His Ascension, it was always mentioned that He ate with them. That we can look forward to eating after we are resurrected. Chuck really loved the Word of God. He loved to look for design – in the biblical text as well as in creation. He loved examining scientific concepts and exploring how they related to God. He wasn’t afraid of looking at any aspect of life. But his ultimate passion was sharing with others about how the Lord authenticates Himself through prophecy. How God thoroughly enjoys revealing what He will do before He brings it about. Chuck was always full of questions. His faith in Jesus was unwavering. His life touched countless others with his contagious energy.

THE LEGACY PROJECT

Gunnar Johnson Founder, Generosity and Stewardship Strategies

CHUCK MISSLER

T

he day before I got word that Chuck Missler had passed away I started a commentary by Chuck on the book of Ecclesiastes.

Writing this piece has been emotional for me, Chuck was my hero, mentor and my spiritual father. Like many of you I am grieving the loss of a great man but my heart is comforted knowing he is enjoying the incredible benefits of a life well lived at this moment in heaven. Vanity, vanity all is vanity says Solomon in the book of Ecclesiastes. But yet a life spent honoring God is not vanity, that is the ultimate conclusion of the book. Chuck set his sights on serving God through full time ministry in a way that was not vanity. Dr. Missler was always a man gifted with an incredible intellect, but the way he choose to spend his life is what is most impressive. He accomplished what Solomon said was the ultimate conclusion of life. “Fear God and keeping his commandments. Despite having financial challenges in his career, due to a bad business deal involving the Russian government, Chuck applied his focus and gifts towards those 66 books written by 40 different authors written over several thousands of years yet making up an integrated message system. In 1990 there was a time when everything he built crumbled. He spent his career doing business turn-arounds,

why not apply the same experience and giftings towards turning around his own personal finances? I think he didn’t because Chuck was highly aware of depositing treasure in heaven not on earth. Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Matthew 6:19-21

Even the last verse in the last chapter of Ecclesiastes 12:14 reads, For God will bring every deed into judgment including every hidden thing whether it’s good or evil. Chuck was highly aware of time passing like sand slipping through the fingers. Remember the story about counting up the weekends and spooking his Jewish friend on a flight by asking, “How many weekends do you have left, 200 or so?" Few people live with the understanding that time is a finite commodity. We can always make more money but can't make more time. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.

Psalm 139:16

Losing millions of dollars, losing his identity as a successful businessman he describes a time when he considered suicide because it was an easy way of escape and the $5 million life insurance would solve his family and friends financial problems. Several things stopped him, the love for his family, a deep realization that God is still in control and not done with him and a kingdom perspective on the challenges of life. Thank goodness Chuck choose to live with the focus he did and put his faith in what God could do with his life if he just surrendered his amazing natural gifts into God’s hands. I would venture to say most of us connected with Chuck’s teaching after 1990 in the last quarter 36

of his life once he decided to go into full time ministry. God can't change our past but He sure can change the way we use our past for the future. Chuck use to always say, "Our scars are our credentials”. There are daily decisions we all make. Solomon asked what profit does a man have from all the labor he experiences under the sun. I would encourage much in every way, if our life is a life focused for the furthering of God’s Kingdom. Is there truly a way to invest our life that makes a difference for all of eternity? Is there really a way to store up treasure in heaven? Those of you who know your Bible well know and for those of you who have processed through enough of Chuck Missler’s teaching to no longer be well adjusted Bible students, know the reality of the Bible’s promises about our future eternal reward. Those of you who don't have a full grasp of this concept I will take just a few lines to give you a mini lesson on a subject worth years of study. Two reminders. One, for your personal edification making you aware of every day you could be investing in the Kingdom. Secondly I want to relieve some grief by reminding you what Chuck is experiencing today because of his dedication to Christ Jesus. Remember Jesus said in Matthew 6:24 to store up treasure in heaven not on earth and Paul again mentioned the concept in 1 Timothy 6:18: Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. 19 In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life. Paul warned us in 1 Cor 3 that we are all building up works measured as wood, hay and stubble or gold, silver and precious stones. All our works will be measured and given rewards from Jesus according to the work and motivation in which we accomplish our life tasks. Can we live a life that is eternally meaningless yet be saved? Yes, but that is a struggle if you are really in Christ. Why live that way, this is our one earthy opportunity to be eternal investors! There truly is not material possession, experience or pleasure that gives satisfaction. Much effort can be expended with no real results. VOLUME 28 | ISSUE 06 |

Success is full of promise but outside of the work for God there is really no eternal success. Vanity, vanity all is vanity Solomon says. Any form of employment or activity can be done for the glory of God. Many amazing achievers in our world find meaninglessness at the end of their journey. Reach the top of the world by climbing the success ladder and you may very well find it is leaning on the tower of meaninglessness at the end. What good does it profit to be wise and wealthy when death awaits each of us? The value is in all the opportunities we are granted in life. What do we do? “Carpe Diem” which is Latin for seize the day! Just as my friend and mentor Chuck Missler did in the focus of his life. We are left with thousands of hours of timeless Bible teaching through commentaries and briefing packs. We also have many great memories with Dr. Missler, tons of unique insights, perspectives and a foundation built on the love of the Word of God. Our K-House team is strong, and the future is exciting. Death always feels like a period in the middle of a sentence. It gives us an opportunity to examine our lives and make course corrections to be more effective and more intentional. As you re-examine your Kingdom impact, please consider partnering with us financially to continue the ministry of Koinonia House. As Chuck would close, lets bow our hearts for a word of prayer. Father, I thank you for the saving power of your son Jesus Christ. Thank you Father for a man who pursued real value and meaning in his life by using his life to serve you in the Kingdom. Father, thank you for loving us so much that you provided us a destiny so amazing that we can't even imagine. Father increase in each of us our hunger for your Word, a hunger to pursue the purpose of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Lord we love you and love our friend Chuck Missler. Thank you for the impact that you’ve had on our lives through Chuck Missler. I pray a special grace over his family and friends as they grieve his loss, but we know someday we will be celebrating together in heaven. Amen. Gunnar Johnson The Legacy Project GunnarJ@khouse.org
