BEREAN 6 The Romance of Redemption by Dr. Chuck Missler The Scriptures were written as a shadow, a dim reflection of Jesus Christ himself — to explain in advance God’s whole plan for the salvation of the human race. The more I study God’s Word, the more I’m amazed by God’s precision. The Old Testament gives us the history of the Jewish people, and it gives us psalms and proverbs and warnings and messages of all kinds, but the more I study it, the more I find Jesus Christ written on every page.

THE ROMANCE OF REDEMPTION

he Bible is remarkable in its ability to reach the tenderest parts of our hearts and the roughest corners of our minds. Many of us have a favorite book of the Bible; Genesis, Isaiah, Romans, Revelation – each is powerful and touches us in deep, personal ways. When somebody once asked me to name my favorite book of the Bible, I realized the Book of Ruth might easily top the list. That might seem surprising. Ruth is a small interlude between Judges and 1 Samuel in our English versions, one that tells the simple story of King David’s great grandmother. Yet, we find a wonderfully elegant love story in its four short chapters. Ruth holds a great treasure; as a work of literature, Ruth is venerated even in secular college classrooms, but, more importantly, we find the Gospel threaded throughout the entire tale.

In fact, it’s one of the most dramatic books of prophecy in the Bible, and I regard this book as an essential prerequisite to studying the book of Revelation. In Ruth, we find that every detail carries not just a story of romance, but specifically the Romance of Redemption. It gives us a perspective of God’s plan for us, and you and I are profiled here in a very surprising way. In Ruth, we discover a concept called the Goel – the Kinsman-Redeemer. We also find here a primer on the distinctions between Israel and the Church. One of the tragic by-products of Christianity today is confusion about God’s purposes for Israel. God has a specific plan for Israel and a specific plan for the Church, and in certain ways these are mutually exclusive. They are parallel but separate, and as we read Ruth, we want to remain sensitive to the differences.

Hebrew literature, we continually see patterns of the Messiah profiled in Israel. In Genesis 22, the Akedah, Abraham binds Isaac for sacrifice, but a ram is sent to take the place of the young man. It’s clear that Abraham knows he’s acting out prophecy. In verse 14, Abraham names the place Jehovah Jireh – “the LORD will see to it” – or as it was called continually afterward, “In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen.” Two thousand years later, on that very spot, another Father did offer His Son. Hebrews tells us that Abraham believed God could raise Isaac from the dead, and in his willingness to trust God and sacrifice Isaac, Abraham acted out the pattern of a prophecy to be fulfilled in the Son of God Himself. The Book of Ruth certainly has a historical application. The story describes a series of events that actually took place during the times of the Judges. We need to understand the historical period during which these events took place. There’s also a homiletic application in this study. We can take the lessons we learn in Ruth and apply them to our own lives. We will also discover that Ruth has some prophetic applications. There are mystical revelations that might surprise us if we missed them at first glance. In Hebrew hermeneutics, the rabbis have what they call the remez – the hint of something deeper. We run across what appear to be small rabbit holes, but they open the door to another world of perspective. We find in this story that each of the principal characters represents a character in the greater story of God’s love for us. Naomi is Israel, the people of the Pleasant Land, the apple of God’s eye. Ruth is the Gentile Believer, the Church, cast out by the Law but brought in by God’s grace. Most importantly, Boaz represents Jesus Christ, our Kinsman-Redeemer. He is the husband of the Church, to the blessing of Israel. These four chapters provide one of the most phenomenal patterns in the Bible. There are critical links in the chain. Like Bethlehem. Why is Bethlehem relevant? Our Christmas cards remind us every year that Bethlehem is associated with the house of David, but why? The throne of David is an important topic. The cross, of course, is the 8

pivotal event in the entire universe. The crown that Jesus is destined to wear also takes a central position in the picture here. We learn about the role of the Kinsman-Redeemer. We also find important clues about the distinction between the Church and Israel, and we want to be sensitive to those issues. Strangely enough, this Old Testament book is the most relevant book for the Church. That sounds like a contradiction, but it’s interesting that even the Jewish community always reads Ruth at the time of Shavuot – Pentecost. The Heptadic Calendar More than a century ago, Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch said, “The Jews’ catechism is his calendar.” I find his statement very interesting. If we are going to understand the Bible, we need to have a feeling for the Jewish calendar. The feasts of Israel are a yearly reminder of God’s purposes and plans, put in place to teach prophetic events in advance. In the spring, there are three feasts of Israel which represent Christ’s First Coming. In the fall, there are three more feasts that represent Christ’s Second Coming. In the middle is Shavuot, the Feast of Weeks. The story of Ruth takes place during the barley and wheat harvests, in the early and late spring, centering on the time of Shavuot. Genesis 1:14 says, “And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years.” The word translated “seasons” here is HaMoyadim, which means “the appointed times.” The lights in the firmament set signs for highlighting the appointed times. There are 70 specific appointed times in the Jewish calendar. There are 52 weekly Sabbaths each year. Passover Week includes seven feast days. Then there’s Shavuot (Pentecost), Yom Teruah (Feast of Trumpets), Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement), and the seven days of Sukkot (Feast of Tabernacles). The end of Sukkot is celebrated by Shemini Atzeret, the eighth-day assembly. When we add these up, we find a total of 70 of these HaMoyadim. 52 + 7 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 7 + 1 = 70 VOLUME 29 | ISSUE 01 |

The Jewish calendar has a heptadic – seven-fold – structure. We recognize that the week has seven days, and the seventh day is the Shabbat. [1] There’s also a particular week of weeks, at the end of which the Jews celebrate the feast of Shavuot, or Pentecost.[2] The religious year is a week of months, from the beginning of Passover in Nisan to the end of the Feast of Tabernacles in the seventh month of Tishri.[3] There’s a week of years as well, and the Mosaic Law required the Israelites to give the land rest after each seven-year cycle.[4] After seven weeks of years – 49 years – there was to be a year of Jubilee in the 50th year, and all debts were to be forgiven.[5] All land was to return to its original owners, and all slaves were to go free. It was a time, twice a century, when the people of Israel were given a clean slate. Peter uses the phrase “the time of restitution of all things.”[6] Hebrew Month Nisan Iyar Sivan Tammuz Av Elul Tishri Heshvan Kislev Tevet Shevat Adar

Nisan, in about March or April. That’s when the majority of the Book of Ruth takes place. Barley acts as a good winter cover crop, and it matures about 60 days after it begins growing again in the spring. This is the time of latter rains, when the barley harvest and the flax harvest occurs. This is the time of Passover. The Feasts of Unleavened Bread and Firstfruits take place during Passover week. The Feast of Firstfruits is always the Sunday after the first Sabbath following Passover. This is a strange formula, but this feast therefore always falls on a Sunday. The next month in the Jewish calendar is Iyar, during which the dry season begins. Then we get to Sivan in about May and June. During Sivan, the early figs ripen and land tending occurs. The special holiday in Sivan is Shavuot, 50 days after the Feast of Firstfruits. What is Shavuot all about? We know it best as Pentecost, the day the Holy Spirit fell on the disciples with tongues of fire in Acts 2, the day the Church started. It’s therefore very interesting that it’s the only feast of Moses in which leavened bread is used. It’s also interesting that the Book of Ruth is always read in Jewish communities at the time of Shavuot. When I’ve asked Jews why, they say that it is associated with the harvest. On the face of it, that makes sense. Ruth met Boaz while gleaning in his fields. However, like the Church, Ruth was a Gentile who came to trust in the God of Israel. Like the Church, she was grafted into the family of Israel by marriage to Boaz, her Kinsman-Redeemer. In light of Christ’s role as our own Kinsman-Redeemer, Like the Church, Ruth we see there is something far deeper going on here. was a Gentile who came

wine are failing to appreciate that by Passover in the spring, the grape juice had to have been fermented into wine. There was no other way to preserve it. Tisha B’Av – the 9th of Av – is memorable as the day in which both temples were destroyed, hundreds of years apart. Throughout history, a long series of bad things have happened to the Jews on the 9th of Av. The fast on the 17th of Tammuz begins the Three Weeks of mourning that lead up to Tisha B’Av. The 17th of Tammuz also commemorates tragedies that took place on that date, beginning with the day Moses broke the tablets of the Law in fury at the worship of the golden calf. [7] The summer has become a time of mourning in Jewish tradition. Dates and summer figs are harvested in the month of Elul, the August and September time period. Then in September and October, the early rains start and the olive harvest begins. Tishri is the first month in the Genesis calendar, but it became the seventh month of the Exodus religious calendar. With the early rains come the Feast of Trumpets, the Day of Atonement, and Sukkot, the Feast of Tabernacles. This is a quick overview of the Jewish agricultural calendar. We need to have a grasp of this as we read the Bible, because the people of the Bible were an agricultural people. Little questions like, “Did Jesus drink wine or grape juice at Passover” can be resolved by understanding simple realities about when the grape harvest took place. Here’s something interesting. If we look for the word HaMoyadim as an equidistant letter sequence, we find it only occurs once in the Old Testament. Statistically, we’d expect it to show up five times, but it only occurs once, and it does so in the book of Genesis. In fact, it shows up at a skipping interval of 70, centered on Genesis 1:14 when the Sun, Moon, and stars are given for the purposes of our timekeeping. Was that an accident? Of course not. It is another one of the strange things in the Bible that give evidence of God’s design.

The Appointed Times As an Equidistant Letter Sequence, it appears only once in Genesis Statistical expectation: 5 times in the 78,064 letters of Genesis It appears only once, at an interval of 70 It is centered on Genesis 1:14 Odds against this by unaided chance have been estimated at greater than 70,000,000 to one!

The Law of Gleaning As we begin reading Ruth, it is also important to understand the process of gleaning. The Hebrew Scriptures have a great deal to say about protecting and providing for the widows and orphans. One of the ways in which the ancient Hebrews provided for the less fortunate was in letting them glean the fields. In Leviticus 19:9-10 and Deuteronomy 24, the LORD orders the Israelites to leave remnants in their fields and orchards so that the poor and stranger and widow and orphan can have something to eat. In other words, the workers were not to go back over their fields a second time; they were to let the less fortunate pick the fields clean. When thou cuttest down thine harvest in thy field, and hast forgot a sheaf in the field, thou shalt not go again to fetch it: it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow: that the LORD thy God may bless thee in all the work of thine hands. When thou beatest thine olive tree, thou shalt not go over the boughs again: it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow. When thou gatherest the grapes of thy vineyard, thou shalt not glean it afterward: it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow.

Deuteronomy 24:19-21

This was the Law of Gleaning. When the professional reapers had gone through the field, they would be followed by the widows and other destitute individuals who would glean the fields. These would gather VOLUME 29 | ISSUE 01 |

whatever leftovers they could find to feed themselves. This was the welfare system of the day – God’s way of providing for the poor. Note that the poor still had to work for their food. There were no handouts, except by those providing for their own families. Naomi is an older woman, and her daughter-in-law Ruth loves her dearly. Ruth goes out every day to glean behind the reapers during the barley harvest, and she brings the grain home to Naomi. The people in town know Naomi, but Ruth is a newcomer to them, and by gleaning for Naomi she earns a reputation for herself. Gleaning was not always a safe job. It was possible that the young women who followed the reapers might be harassed or harmed by them. However, something very unusual happens. The field on which Ruth happens to glean belongs to a wealthy relative of Elimelech named Boaz, and Boaz notices Ruth. He tells his workers to leave her alone, and he charges her to only glean in his field and not go to another. The plot starts to unfold... These four chapters represent the greatest love story in history, and in their pages we find abounding treasure. In chapter 1 of Ruth, we’ll see love’s resolve, when Ruth decides to cling to Naomi. In chapter 2, we see love’s response, when Ruth gleans for Naomi. Chapter 3 shows us love’s request at the strange, widely misunderstood threshing floor scene. Finally, in Chapter 4 we see the big climax: love’s reward, in which the land is redeemed for Naomi and a bride is provided to Boaz. Love’s Resolve Now it came to pass in the days when the judges ruled, that there was a famine in the land. And a certain man of Bethlehemjudah went to sojourn in the country of Moab, he, and his wife, and his two sons. And the name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife Naomi, and the name of his two sons Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Bethlehemjudah. And they came into the country of Moab, and continued there.

This is an introductory sentence, which explains the background for the story about to be told. This was the time of the judges, which was not a spiritually high time in Israel’s existence. In fact, the Book of Judges ends by stating its general theme: “In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes.”[8] There was a period after Moses but before Israel was given a king when Israel was governed by a series of judges. It was one of the spiritual valleys in Israeli history. Not a good time. Within that dark period when the judges ruled, however, we find the ultimate love story. It’s a love story at the literary level. It’s also a love story at the prophetic and personal levels. After taking over the Promised Land under the leadership of Joshua, Israel spent the next four centuries in a disappointing cycle. The LORD would give them victory, but after a time the Israelites would turn away from Him. He would then allow them to be taken over by their enemies. The Israelites would then repent and return to the LORD, and He would then rescue them through one of the judges. Over and over again we see this cycle of events. Ruth takes place during this colorful but somewhat dark era. When our story starts, there is a famine in the land. A man named Elimelech moves his wife Naomi and their two sons eastward into Moab where there is food. There are a number of famines in the Bible.[9] It’s not an uncommon problem, and famine may be a response to the spiritual condition of the country at the time. God had warned Israel that famine was one of the judgments that would come upon the land as a result of their failure to keep the Law: …And your strength shall be spent in vain: for your land shall not yield her increase, neither shall the trees of the land yield their fruits.

Leviticus 26:20

thy land powder and dust: from heaven shall it come down upon thee, until thou be destroyed.

Deuteronomy 28:23-24

We know there was a famine during the time of Gideon in Judges 6. Israel had again turned to doing evil, so God allowed the Midianites to come in and ravish the land. When the Israelites sowed their fields, the Midianites came in and decimated their crops. This invasion went on for seven years, and the resulting famine covered the entire land of Israel. This matches the situation in Ruth. The famine must have been ongoing for several years in order to compel Elimelech to take his wife and sons and move to Moab. Centuries before, Moab was born as the result of an incestuous night between Lot and his daughter after his daughter got him drunk.[10] The Israelites are therefore related to the Moabites, but there’s no great love between these peoples. Moab hired Balaam to curse Israel during the Israelites’ pilgrimage to Canaan in Numbers 22. Under normal circumstance, the Moabites were barred from participating in the national corporate life of Israel.[11] God purposely kept them separate. Yet, the relationships between some of the individual Israelites and Moabites was good. When David fled the wrath of Saul, he found a friend in the king of Moab.[12] The two countries were neighbors, and they enjoyed years of peace. And Elimelech Naomi’s husband died; and she was left, and her two sons. And they took them wives of the women of Moab; the name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other Ruth: and they dwelled there about ten years. And Mahlon and Chilion died also both of them; and the woman was left of her two sons and her husband.

The Book of Ruth is venerated in college literature classes as one of the most elegant love stories of all time. What most people don’t realize, is that it is one of the most significant “New Testament” books located in the Old Testament–and it stands as a pivotal study in Bible Prophecy! It is an essential prerequisite to understanding the Book of Revelation! This tiny, 4-chapter book is one of the most inexhaustible sources of spiritual insight in the entire Bible. While it has been summarized in many of Chuck’s broader studies, Chuck explores the many surprises hidden in the text of this charming treasure (including some hidden secrets that will astonish most Biblical scholars!) Every detail of the text will evidence a skillful design beyond the skills of any human editor. END TIMES AND UNFORGIVENESS

NFORGIVENESS: DO WE REALLY UNDERSTAND THE EFFECTS OF IT ON OUR LIVES? In this New Year, where do you need a fresh start? I am releasing all bitterness and unforgiveness with a desire to start with a clean slate.

Working on the Legacy project as the contact person for families who want to further the ministry of Chuck and Nancy Missler, I have met some fantastic people who love Jesus through Koinonia House. The stories of what God has done and is doing in lives of people that interact with our ministry resources are fun to hear and share. The following article came from one of our ministry supporters, Becky Bennett after a wonderful dialogue about her life. When I was asked to write this article for the Personal Update, I thought I was the last person qualified, as I have had such issues with unforgiveness. But, I do have a testimony about victory over this subject, and I do realize the importance for every Christian—without fail— to take this issue seriously in their walk in Christ. Not later, at a more convenient time, but right now! There are so many subjects of study in the Word; Salvation, Faith, Obedience, End Times, Marriage, etc., etc. With the technology advancements we have seen over the recent decades, a believer can simply use a computer for a search and have tons of information and Scriptures to study a subject. But, I heard a wise teacher of the Word say once—“Why study prosperity when your real issue, for example, is anger? Made a lot of sense. We, as Christians, tend to many times gravitate towards learning about what interests us—— not having really VOLUME 29 | ISSUE 01 |

prayed first about what interests HIM and what He wants us to learn from His Word. Once we have given our lives to the Lord, we tend to speedily learn about our salvation, sharing our new faith with others, picking a church to attend and be involved in, and yes, even beginning a ministry. But the main issue that Jesus spoke of through multiple teachings, parables, and his own example, is to “Love the Lord thy God with all they heart and all thy soul, and love your neighbor as yourself.” Jesus stated that these were the greatest Commandments. It is so easy to take the first part of that statement, and quickly forget the “love thy neighbor” part. Let me start with some fundamentals. I love what Dr. Missler always reminded us of as students of the Word under him——“remember the whole counsel of God.” That is why when we listen to his “briefings” on a subject we can sometimes catch ourselves saying “why is he talking so much about a passage in the Old Covenant when I put the study of “Ephesians” in the DVD player? Well, fellow Bereans, I quickly caught on the difference between Dr. Missler’s teaching and many others, with all due respect to all the many wonderful Biblical scholars the Lord has anointed. But Dr. Missler wanted us to understand from a truly educated perspective, the history, the culture at the time the Scriptures were written, and not to take Scripture out of context, but to take in “the whole counsel of God.” Genesis to Revelation. That means to me personally right now in my life, not to just study a particular subject, but to have the fundamentals of my faith down, the “milk of the Word” as Paul puts it. I know in my own walk with Him, for example, I have many times studied prophecy (and who wouldn’t under Dr. Missler?) and even taught the subject, when in fact I had issues that were causing me to stumble in my walk, despite how many Scriptures I could quote re: prophecy and End Times. But in touching on End Times, let’s actually go back to what Jesus said about them. When Jesus answered the disciples' question of 30

JANUARY 2019 | Personal UPDATE

“tell us, when will this (destruction of the Temple) take place, and what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?” Jesus answered and stated was “let no man deceive you.” He spoke of many coming in His Name to deceive many. “You will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not frightened, for those things must take place, but that is not yet the end (of the age).” For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places. But all these things are merely the beginning of birth pangs (of the intolerable anguish and the time of unprecedented trouble).

Matthew 24: 4-8. (AMP)

As Dr. Missler so aptly pointed out, these are “pre-signs,” not signs of the end but the things that will happen before the end of the age. Let’s go to verse 9 which states “Because lawlessness is increased, the love of most people will grow cold.” I have to admit, in the midst of “wars and rumors of wars,” the terrible persecution of believers, earthquakes, famines, pestilences I often have thought, “Why does Jesus speak of the simple issue of love? Doesn’t that belong in another topic, another place? All one has to do to see prophecy being fulfilled is to turn on the news. Are we not seeing a great divide developing, worse than we have ever had in our country (the U.S.) over political debate? All of us have been seeing over the last 2 years not only the heated disagreements over political issues but the violence that erupts over these disagreements that we have never seen before. Funny, the term “haters” is used over and over again by the news commentators. Scripture states “many will be offended and will fall away and betray one another and HATE one another.” (Matthew 24:10) I confess, that when I watch the news and even in conversation with other believers, I begin to criticize those that don’t believe the Word, stand for ungodly principles, etc., and TOTALLY forget to see these people as Jesus does—— sinners that need Him desperately. Do you all see what I have seen in the last couple of years? I am sure you do. Many Christians speak as if conservatism is their Gospel and the VOLUME 29 | ISSUE 01 |

President as their Savior? We must be very careful to have our antenna up, and our spiritual radar on at all times to remember that now more than ever, we need to love those that hate our faith and our principles. I admit, it is easy for me to criticize those that disagree with my “godly” views, yet I am far from godly when I criticize instead of love and pray for revival in our country, as I believe we have been given a reprieve right now to do all we can to spread the Gospel before the/ Rapture Harpazo. Remember the Apostle Paul? A MURDERER of Jesus’s followers, until his road to Damascus experience!! Remember per Scripture in these last days, that those we most criticize could be the ones that surrender to Christ and cause great revival from their testimony! Can you imagine the effect on our country/world if those leaders screaming for abortion rights, no borders, and their support of the lack of police/legal authority intervention with outright crimes being committed (“lawlessness”——remember?) that are right in front of us were to suddenly speak of a Damascus Road experience in Jesus Christ? Now let’s bring this to a much more personal level in our walk. Needless to say, I am saying that in the midst of what we are seeing in this last generation of the Church Age we must guard against the coldness of our hearts which begins with the subject of unforgiveness in our own hearts and minds. Jesus, of course being the Truth, knew the Truth, and knew that the lack of love for one another would play into Satan’s hands to bring about the hatred, violence, and actions that He was speaking about when He answered the disciples' question regarding the Last Days. Just turn on the news and you can watch what He was talking about. How much we deceive ourselves when we attend church, read the Scriptures (study “to show ourselves approved-hey, we are spiritual, after all), go to our weekly groups and witness Christ, but yet harbor unforgiveness, resentment, and anger, etc., in our hearts towards others. Unfortunately, we let our flesh yield to the enemies hand by simply pushing these issues into the background, especially when we are busy “living for Him.” 32

JANUARY 2019 | Personal UPDATE

Jesus always, without fail, represented Truth. We know He is the Truth, the Way, and the Life. How many times in Scripture did He confound sinners, the disciples, and even the “learned” Priests and Pharisees by interjecting the principles of forgiveness, compassion and kindness in the face of outright injustice? When He healed on the Sabbath? When he told a disciple to “let them take your coat also” when theft had occurred? Most poignant of all when He hung on the cross and forgave the ones who He came to save, and here they were murdering Him? Long story short, when I look at all the examples in the Word that injustice was the issue, Jesus saw a much clearer, bigger Truth that many times escapes us mere humans when we harbor unforgiveness and bitterness in our hearts. One thing that is most clear to me about unforgiveness is that it blinds us to the condition of the person who has wronged us or sinned against us, thus enabling us to believe that forgiveness is virtually impossible. Jimmy Evans, a well known Pastor and teacher of the Word in Dallas, TX testifies that he was never able to forgive his father until the Lord showed him his father as a child, severely poverty stricken, had no shoes on his feet, and slept in the winter in the barn as their home was so small. Jesus knew what Pastor Evan’s father went through when Jimmy didn’t and why his father was the way he was when Jimmy didn’t understand. Love (Jesus) showed Pastor Jimmy why he needed to forgive his dad. This is why we can’t wait to “feel” forgiveness. “Lean not into thine own understanding” Proverbs 3:5. There are reasons to forgive that God knows of, and we simply don’t. Danger to us is the passing of time we allow in harboring unforgiveness —- it creates the opportunity for a stronghold of the enemy to entrap us. Now I know why Jesus delivered some of the toughest Scriptures for the Body of Christ to digest in Matthew 5:39-45. The highlight of the Text summarized in verse 44: But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, and pray for them that despitefully use you and persecute you. That ye may be the children of your Father in Heaven; for He maketh His sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and the unjust. VOLUME 29 | ISSUE 01 |

33

COVER CONTENTS ORDER Personal UPDATE | JANUARY 2019

I would encourage you to stop here and read the entire Text before moving on. I must admit I have plenty of times been disobedient in not following His command spoken of here, and suffered the results, believe me. Matthew 5:25 Jesus warns us of the most dangerous tool the enemy uses to blind us from the Truth, to block His blessings in our lives, and keep us from understanding His will in our lives—the stronghold. If the enemy can do this, he has us hook, line and sinker. Everything stops no matter what amount of the Word we can memorize or how many small groups we lead or how many sermons we can preach to great applause. The danger of a stronghold developing stops us dead in our tracks. Agree with thine adversary quickly whiles thou art in the way with him (right when the offense or sin against one another happens) lest at any time the adversary (Satan) delivers thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison.

Matthew 5:25.

Have you ever observed a person trapped in bitterness? They never bothered to address their issue with the one who offended them? I am a nurse, and medical professionals say all the time that this person is a “prisoner of their own bitterness”. Here a worldly phrase that has its roots in the Truth, the Word of God. Obedience is critical at the time of offense, no matter how you feel at the time! Quickly repent of taking offense, despite how right you may be at what someone has done to you and ask the Holy Spirit to enable you to forgive. And don’t condemn yourself if you still feel the feelings— just trust above and beyond those feelings. REBUKE the enemy in Jesus Name! Remember those feelings are Satan’s attempt to keep you in unforgiveness and bondage. And bear in mind that forgiveness doesn’t mean that what happened to you us OK. It simply means that we trust that God understands the one that offended us, and is the only One to judge in the end. He is a just God and He loves JUSTICE. Let the consequences of the offense be in God’s hands and just, whether we “feel like it” or not, just be obedient knowing it is our obligation to simply trust Him. If we wait for our 34

feelings to forgive come, those feelings may never come. Trust me, your feelings of love and forgiveness will only come when you first commit to God your desire to be obedient to His Word and forgive. Then and only then will you have the compassion of Jesus overtake the anger, bitterness and offense Satan himself has plunked into your mind and heart. And, warning: if you allow that offense to stay in your mind, then it travels and becomes a stronghold in your heart. In my own life I have suffered physical abuse, verbal abuse and gross injustices that I wouldn’t wish on anyone. But I must tell you now, that when I was angry, hurt and bitter, a stronghold of the enemy was planted in my heart and mind. Not only did that blind me to the one who committed the offense, but I can see in retrospect how it limited my walk in Him, and it destroyed the ability for Him to open the windows of heaven for me and show me His Will. We wonder why “bad things happen to good people”. We can’t judge or criticize others when bad things happen but have great compassion and prayer for them as it could so easily be us in the same circumstances. We must continuously evaluate our own walk in Him. Wherefore my beloved brethren, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

Philippians 2:12.

I know that when a prayer wasn’t answered, I wasn’t blessed, prosperity seemed far away (after all I tithed—isn’t that the answer to financial prosperity?) and things just went south, could it be due to my own disobedience to the Word? How many times did I think I was being obedient, and yet blew off the condition of my heart? I now understand what grace and the abundant life is. Because God loves us all equally and wishes for all of us in Christ to have an abundant life, we can’t question this His lack of love or believe the lie that He wants to bless others but not us. But instead of blaming ourselves as “there is now, therefore, no condemnation in Christ Jesus” we need to see Him as our Heavenly cheerleader encouraging VOLUME 29 | ISSUE 01 |

35

us that the path to His abundant life is trusting that what He said is Truth, no matter what our fleshly feelings tell us. How many times as parents do we come across to our kids as harsh, yet we know from life experience that to obey eliminates a lot of pain for our kids? Jesus, our Advocate before the Father wants to eliminate the pain!! He is not condemning us when we are disobedient, but our encourager so the abundant life can be ours! But we have a choice, and God will not go against our own choices and will. And Satan is happy as a clam to throw another rock, another incident in our paths when we live in disobedience by harboring offenses. Stop and think about it. When you are angry, have bitterness, and then a stronghold of offense, are you pursuing actions that advance the Kingdom? No way. You are caught up in the cares of this life, for sure, and the enemy is winning. Thus this is the truth of obedience. When we disobey by harboring offenses and bitterness in our hearts, we are blind to the truth, we stop the victory in our walk in Christ. We cause ourselves to miss the Truth in our circumstances and thus miss the victory and abundant blessings He so wishes to bestow on us. Most importantly, we miss His divine will for our lives. I do highly recommend a book written by Biblical teacher John Bevere, called “The Bait of Satan.” It is offense that opens the door for the enemy to trap us, blind us and block the abundant life that He wants for us, and in that abundant life, we find His will for our lives. I am quite sure that for the most part, all that are reading the Personal Update are aware of us living in the Last Days. But are we caught up in the cares and concerns of this life on a day to day basis, not fulfilling what His will is in our lives, due to an offense? Think about it. For example, maybe you decide against having a Bible study small group at your home as you are “busy” since you have had to work overtime on the job, to hold off financial disaster since a brother or sister destroyed you financially and betrayed you? Do you really not have the time, or are you caught up in your own heart and exhausted from the after-effects of anger and bitterness? Just one of many examples of issues we all are faced with —but need 36

to decide to deal with according to the Word, or live entrapped by the circumstances. In closing, read Psalm 51:10-13. Let us all examine our hearts in this final time of the Church Age and gain victory by destroying the Enemy of our souls with the Word of God, the Sword of the Spirit (Ephesians 6: 13-18- the whole armor of God— put it on). We don’t have much time, and we need to find out His Will for our lives in order to “improve our report card” as Dr. Missler would so aptly say. Ask the Lord to open your eyes to whatever is amiss in our lives so He can “create within us a clean heart, and renew a right spirit within us”. At the end of the passage of Psalm 51: 10-13 is “Then will I teach transgressors Thy ways, and sinners shall be converted unto Thee.” Isn’t that what it is all about? By the way, I intentionally added the words End Times to the title of this article as I know, of myself, I might not read another simple message on “forgive one another”. God bless K-house, our ministry, K-House president, Ron Matsen, and his family, and all Bereans as we go about His business in these Last Days. God is using this ministry all over the world to equip believers through a serious study of the Word of God. We ask for your prayer support and financial support. And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher?” • How seriously should we personally take this command today? • Is this command somehow only limited to those who feel they have the gift of evangelism? • What needs to be said, understood, and believed for a person to be born-again? NEWEBOOK Tradition

Exploring the Roots of Church Traditions by Bob Cornuke A captivating and often startling exposĂŠ filled with historical intrigue. It will leave the reader stunned at what has been manifested in the dark halls of history since the first-century church. This book is fast-paced and shocking in its examination of various man-made church traditions which have, far too often, strayed from clear Scriptural mandates.
