T
he upcoming tour to Israel will offer a special surprise for the members of the tour as we are planning on combining the normal site-seeing events with some ground-breaking research in and around the City of David. Our guide throughout our time in Jerusalem will be Eli Shukron. Eli is an Israeli archaeologist employed by the Israel Antiquities Authority. He has made several significant finds from the period of the Second Temple of Jerusalem especially in the City of David. In 2004 Shukron, and archaeologist Ronny Reich, discovered and excavated the Pool of Siloam from the Second Temple period. He has also discovered, in the City of David excavations, a site that he calls “Temple Zero.” Here he found a mysterious standing stone which he refers to as the “Melchizedek Stone, Abraham's altar of worship.” Although this is not a site normally visited by tour groups, Eli will provide us access to this and many more live excavations that are off the list for normal viewing. If you can, please join Bob Cornuke, Eli Shukron and me for an exciting visit to Israel. Our intention will be to have Eli show us the most recent discoveries associated with the Temple Mount and the City of David. Bob will provide the color and background on a number of his exciting discoveries. I will be putting the whole experience into perspective with daily Bible studies that should help everyone see the black-and-white text of the Scripture become alive and in color before their very eyes. We will also be bringing our own film crew with the intention of creating a documentary of the evidence as it is being revealed. Since we will be limiting the size of this tour to one bus only, if you have a desire to join us then you need to book now as the available spaces are filling fast. children’s play facility in Sderot. With the exchange of a few emails of introduction I found myself being ushered into a world I could never have imagined. After careful and prayerful consideration, the Board of Koinonia House unanimously agreed to donate the accumulated Israel Relief funds to a very special play area in Sderot, Israel. It was decided that, following our 2018 BASE Tour to Israel, my wife Marcie and I would travel to Sderot and make a formal presentation of our financial support for their ongoing project to provide a bomb-proof indoor playground for the children of the city. As we enjoyed the pleasant drive south from Jerusalem through the fertile western plains of Judea, I experienced a mixture of excitement and trepidation, given the fact that just 3 weeks earlier more than 300 Qassam rockets had been launched into southern Israel with most of them being aimed at Sderot. On Sunday, 11 November, in the hours after a failed covert Israeli military operation, 17 rockets were fired from Gaza into Israel of which 3 were shot down, causing sirens to sound in Sderot. The next day at least 300 projectiles, of which 60 were intercepted, were fired from Gaza into Israel during the day, wounding nine civilians.2

The Constant Threat Since 2001 there have been more than 20,000 projectiles launched from Gaza at the cities of southern Israel. As the Qassam rocket has a limited range of about 10 km (6.2 miles), cities like Sderot are the prime target for these weapons of terror. Within only a few years, 25% of the city’s residents had moved to find a safer place to live. According to a recent study, 40% of children in Sderot suffer from PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder). Prof. Ruth Pat-Horenczyk, Director of Children and Adolescent Services of ICTP from the Hebrew University explained, “Even during wartime, the level of PTSD among children nationwide hovers somewhere between 7 and 10 percent”3 Because of the constant, threat the town’s 3,000 children, were forced to remain indoors all day rather than risk the chance that they wouldn’t be able to reach a bomb shelter quickly enough during a rocket attack. “These children are afraid every day, every hour of the day,” said Dinah Houri, a school teacher in Sderot. “Wherever they go and whatever they do, they must think about what they will do if an alarm sounds. The question is always ‘where will I hide?’”4 Safe Play Zone

Upon arriving into the city of Sderot I was immediately startled by the site of mini bomb shelters on every street corner, at every bus stop, and along every long public pathway. I shuttered at the thought of what it must be like to live a normal life on the front line of a war that seems to have no end. made to build the playground on the very site where a rocket had hit the city. In 2009 the Jewish National Fund-U.S. provided an initial US$5 million for a safe recreation center. It is surrounded by anti-shockwave walls (painted in blue, yellow, green and red), is nearly 2,000 square meters (21,000 square feet) in size, and it has room for 500 people. “Where they seek to destroy and harm, we will build and reclaim,” said current Mayor Davidi. “We are strong, and we are standing bravely in the face of the attacks that have continued for over a decade. We will continue to protect and defend the borders of Israel. We will not bow to terror – just the opposite, we will rise like the phoenix, and we will continue to build and rehabilitate the destruction.”5 Marcie and I were greeted with open arms as we entered the huge concrete bunker. As we entered, we immediately heard to sound of children playing. He then let us meet some the children and take a selfie. Truly an amazing and humbling experience. Meeting the Mayor Following our visit to the playground, we were then driven to the City Council building in the center of the city where we met Mayor Alon Davidi. He is a pleasant, soft-spoken Ron and Marcie take a 'selfie' with some of the children young man who has been inside the bomb shelter. the mayor since 2013. When we arrived, he was quick to express his deep appreciation for the gift from Koinonia House and told us that it came at a very opportune time. Given the typical fiscal constraints of running a city he told us how they wanted to add an extension to the Blue Box but lacked the funds. He then went on to explain that our donation would now allow them to move their expansion project forward. He gave us a beautiful little sculpture that was made by a local artisan out of the remains of a Qassam rocket. The sculpture has three main elements; a dove, sitting on an olive branch, rooted in the center of a map of an undivided Israel. Living life is 15-second Intervals During our visit with Mayor Davidi I asked him to give me some insight into what it was like to live on the front line. “We live life in 15-second

intervals,” he replied. “No matter where we are, no matter what we are doing, we live our life constantly aware that at any minute of the day or night we may be called to respond to the rocket-attack warning which gives us only 15 seconds to get to a bomb shelter.” In Sderot every building has one, every home has one, every possible vulnerable area has one. Every person, citizen or visitor, in Sderot carries the extra burden of having their ears tuned to the warning sirens and their lives ready to be interrupted at a moment’s notice. Nevertheless, while the world around them seeks to destroy them, the children of Sderot play in safety; at least for now. An Epilogue The people of Sderot have learned to live life with a constant anticipation for the unexpected. In the midst of tension and threat of terror, the people here have learned to cope because they have taught themselves to have hope. The citizens living here with this constant threat willingly do so because they believe that they can make a difference for the State of Israel. What would happen if we, as Christians, lived our lives in 15-second intervals? Not motivated by the fearful anticipation of a sudden attack from an enemy, but because we believe that we are Christ’s hands, feet, and voice to this generation, and that Jesus Christ is really coming back SOON. Our constant anticipation should be that we could meet our Messiah at any moment and then face the Judgment Seat of Christ6 where our fruit-bearing as Christ’s disciples will be rewarded. In times of trouble, where is your “strong tower?”7 What consumes your time, talent, and thought?8 Are you willingly living in the face of the adversary for the Gospel’s sake?9 For Marcie and me, our visit was not simply the conclusion of a visit to another site in Israel, shake a few hands, make a presentation, and then move with life as before. Our trip to Sderot gave us a graphic and living example of how we as Christians should be “living on the front line.” 6 Romans 14:10; 2 Corinthians 5:10 7 Psalm 61:2,3; Proverbs 18:10 8 Philippians 4:6-8 9 Ezekiel 22:30

Keeping Promises The “Peace Process” grinds on as the world continues to align itself against Israel and our government continues to stiff our only ally in the Middle East. As politicians continue to meddle in the region, we need to remember the Biblical basis of Israel’s right to the land. It doesn’t belong to the Palestinians... or to the UN...or to the U.S...or even Israel! It is the Lord’s. In a larger sense, “the Earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof.”1 And yet, it is strange to realize that God has singled out a particular piece of real estate for His own special purposes and put His name on it. Place your finger in your Bible at Genesis Chapter 12. Place another finger at Acts Chapter 2. Now pick it up by the pages between your two fingers: what you have between those two fingers -- most of the Bible -- is all about Israel! And God has made certain covenants with Israel. It comes as a shock to many to discover that all our rights and privileges -- even as a Church -- derive from these covenants. We need a doctrinal as well as devotional understanding of the Word of God, so we need to fully understand these irrevocable commitments. God has made some irrevocable, unilateral commitments -- formal covenants or promises -- and one of His most essential characteristics is that He delights in making and keeping His promises. most disturbing shortcomings of many modern churches is their failure to appreciate the seriousness of these covenants. There are four, in particular, that are vital for an understanding of both the Old and New Testaments: The Abrahamic Covenant, the Palestinian Covenant, the Davidic Covenant, and the New Covenant. Abrahamic Covenant It may come as a surprise to realize that Abraham was a Gentile when this covenant was first made!2 It first occurs in Genesis Chapter 12, and includes seven3 “I Wills”: 1. And I will make of thee a great nation, 2. and I will bless thee, 3. and make thy name great; 4. and thou shalt be a blessing: 5. And I will bless them that bless thee, 6. and curse him that curseth thee: 7. and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed. Genesis 12:2-3

Chuck, and his wife Nancy, moved to New Zealand to set up K-House's Southern base. Chuck later retired in 2017 and passed away in 2018.
From these “Seven I Wills” flow God’s entire plan for all of mankindincluding you and me! All other covenants build on this one. Items 5 & 6 are the basis for the “Sheep and Goat Judgment” of the nations in Matthew 25:31-46, which closes the “times of the Gentiles.” God foreknew Satan’s anti-Semitism. All history is patterned and destined after this reality (cf. Zech 2:8). This also indicates that the Church will not be in the Tribulation, as this judgment emphasizes the distinction between Jew and Gentile. It will be the Discriminator during the Tribulation period (cf. Rom 10:12; Col 3:11, et al). Item 7 is alluded to by Christ when He was talking with the woman at the well in Samaria, when He declared, “Salvation is of the Jews.”4 2 He became circumcised in Chapter 17. There is no other such promise to any other people! So how do we get our benefit from this covenant? We rely entirely on our derivative benefit from the Root of David, the Lion of the Tribe of Judah, Yeshua HaMeshiach, Jesus the Messiah. Formally Solemnized This covenant was confirmed by the most solemn procedure known at the time. When two participants wanted to confirm a solemn oath, they would participate in a ritual in which a blood sacrifice would be divided into two parts, and both would walk between the elements in a Figure-8, repeating the terms of the agreement.5 The Hebrew word for covenant, berith, comes from the verb, barath, which means to “cut”; “to cut a covenant.” In Genesis 15:6-21, God performs just such a solemn ritual, but first puts Abraham in a deep sleep, and is then seen passing between the pieces alone, signifying the unilateral nature of the unconditional covenant. The imagery itself is interesting: God was represented by a metalsmith’s kiln6 and a burning torch.7 The key point that God is making is that the covenant was unilateral: there was no commitment required of Abraham; he was in a deep sleep at the time. It was entirely by grace; no performance was required. Unconditionality Confirmed This covenant was expressly declared eternal, and is therefore unconditional.8 Furthermore, it was reconfirmed by an oath!9 It was also confirmed by the birth of Isaac and Jacob, and to both of whom the promises are repeated in their original form.10 (It is extremely significant that the later reiterations of the covenant are in spite of acts of disobedience.) 5 Cf. The New Testament also declares the Abrahamic Covenant to be immutable and unchangeable.11 So What? So why is this passage so critical for us to understand? There are at least two important reasons: 1. The Possibility of National Judgment. As one recognizes the moral free-fall of our own nation, and the fact that we have come to represent all that God abhors, the question is frequently asked, “Will God judge America?” Or even, “Why hasn’t God judged America already?” These are serious questions. A common explanation is because of the Abrahamic Covenant! Genesis 12:2-3 is still in effect. “I will bless them that bless thee.” One can profile the destiny of nations and empires by their treatment of the Jews. Where is the British Empire today? Where is the Third Reich today? The disturbing implications of this perspective is that America appears to be turning its back on Israel. While “He that keepeth Israel neither slumbers nor sleeps,”12 we may be removing the very shield from an overdue judgment by ignoring this ancient commitment of the Creator Himself. 2. Endemic Heresies. Another reason we need to be clear on the irrevocability of God’s commitments in these covenants is due to the false teaching that has permeated many of the modern churches. There is a view that Israel “forfeited her promises” by rejecting her Messiah, and that these promises now devolve somehow symbolically, or allegorically, upon the Church.13 This is the very heresy that led to the Holocaust. And the rise of this same heresy again in these days will lead to the next one. And the next one will be far more severe than even the previous disaster. The Holocaust in Europe destroyed one Jew in three. The next one will destroy two out of three.14 11 Heb 6:13-18; (cf. There are many dangers in not taking the Word of God seriously. And there are many ways of not taking it seriously: one can ignore it; one can disbelieve or deny it; or, one can dilute its meaning by conjectures, allegories, or redefinitions. really like the start of the new year, it represents a new beginning, or a fresh reboot, for God to do something brand new. Every year, I start with a new devotional Bible study plan. Personally, I don’t use scripted Bible study plans, although I have nothing against them. Many people are blessed by them, but I prefer to sit with the Lord, ask what He wants me to study, and how He wants to guide me through His Word in the new year. The complexity of my life is not covered in one Bible study plan throughout the course of a year. More spiritual nourishment is needed than a few minutes in a pre-planned devotional.

Sometimes there are overlaps, but most of the time, these stay separate. As I write this, I am wondering if other leaders do the same. Maybe I’ll ask a few friends. Devotional time This is my every-morning quiet time in Bible study where I will be covering the entire Bible within the course of the year although I don’t VOLUME 29 | ISSUE 02 |

always go in order. I like to cover one book at a time and bounce from the Old Testament to the New Testament. Many times, the passages of the day speak directly to certain situations in my life. That causes me to go much slower and ask the Lord to dig out the life lessons that I need in this season. Other times, I cover a full book in a day during my devotions, simply because I’m enjoying it and the schedule allows the time to sit and soak in the Word. I texted my friend Joel Richardson and asked if he separates his devotional time from his study time to teach, and he gave some insight into his routine. “I actually do not differentiate between devotional studies and my normal studies for writing and teaching. The Lord has been good to me in that whatever it is that he has led me into I am able to go deep and naturally I tend to teach these things whenever I am given the opportunity. If someone asks me to teach something that is older, then there really isn’t too much study involved at this point. Because I have five kids I have disciplined my life to get up at four in the morning so that I can have some good dedicated time to study and pray each day. So this is something that I look forward to every morning. It gets me out of bed with excitement. I’m not a naturally disciplined person so I have found it necessary to put some very deliberate structures into my life to make study and prayer a consistent part of my spiritual life. And walk with Jesus.” Public ministry study Teaching, writing and speaking opportunities take a life of their own for me. If I was to make a food analogy these would be special dinners versus my regular everyday breakfast. The preparation required is different, although the activity is similar. When I have a writing project put on my heart, I begin to dig in and study a topic versus going “precept upon precept” through a book of the Bible. Same thing happens in teaching or speaking opportunities. The church, or conference, usually has a broad agenda to cover, so I begin to pray for a special word or insight, then dig in and study. I once had a minister tell me that he didn’t need 26

a devotional life outside of the speaking preparation because he felt he got enough Bible study in work as a minister. That statement just didn’t feel right. Sure enough, not too much longer after he made that statement to me, he had a moral failure. Notice this is the opposite of what Joel said. Joel does not neglect his devotional life in favor of using his time to study for teaching. He teaches out of the overflow of his devotional life. Our devotional life is internal so that we have something to draw from to take externally. That reminds me of my drywall days. Sometimes, we would have to build scaffolding to get up to the job that was at hand. My devotional time is like the scaffolding; it’s internal. It prepares me to do the work the Lord gives me as an opportunity externally. Without my devotional life I would have head knowledge not relational knowledge. One of the biggest challenges of being in vocational ministry is the temptation to teach what you know about God instead of teaching insights from your relationship with God. I had lunch with my Monument, Colorado neighbor and friend Bob Cornuke the other day, and I took the opportunity to ask him about his daily Bible study routine. He and his wife Terri work through devotionals together, but he confessed heart-tugging devotionals were not his thing. Imagine that. However, being a wise man who likes to remain happily married, he happily does whatever Mrs. Cornuke asks. Bob’s favorite way to study is to take a section of Scripture and really dig in deep to understand the context of the time it was written and what it meant to the culture of the day. He gains passion in his walk with God by exploring God’s word. Isn’t it interesting how Bob has been on over one hundred Biblical archeological adventures and they all sprang from his daily devotional time of exploring the Bible. Connecting with his Heavenly Father ignited his passion to explore. Leadership study Both ministry and business have a life of their own, separate from your personal life with the Lord, and yet intertwined and inseparable. When I pray about my company it has different needs that require me to VOLUME 29 | ISSUE 02 |

study as a leader. Many of you are leaders of your own business, and you have management and leadership responsibilities. Every one of us who leads staff has to prepare to stand before the Lord and account for the stewardship of the people He put in our care. I also believe that we have accountability for the opportunities that we both miss and grasp. I look at the life of Daniel as a chief administrator to emulate. Daniel kept a careful sense of God’s timing and how it lined up with his current situation. Dr. Missler has a fantastic commentary on the book of Daniel which outlines Daniel’s illustrious career in three administrations. Daniel 6:3 says Daniel became distinguished above all the other high officials because an excellent spirit was in him. As a leader, I would encourage you to go on an exploratory exercise. Ask God what impact He wants your company or ministry to make. Then ask how He plans to get you into a Kingdom-impacting place. Most of my new insights have come through praying over the company. Some of you may not be a company leader or a teacher or writer. Even if that is not your gift set, I would challenge you that the Lord does want to use you to lead. Do you lead your family? Do you have influence on a group of friends? Do you have a church home that needs your volunteer service? What if you were called to teach a small group? Would you feel adequately equipped to do so? I used to be terrified about the idea of teaching the Bible in a small group environment let alone preaching in front of a crowd!
Do whatever it takes to prioritize your time in a way that gives you opportunity to study...
Do you have daily times with the Lord giving Him the opportunity to speak in your life? Are you a serious student of the word of God? My encouragement for everybody in 2019 is to take your Bible study to another level of intensity. Do whatever it takes to prioritize your time in a way that gives you opportunity to study at some point in the day. With technology there are many audio options. Most people have smart phones which can hold a vast array of Bible study opportunities. You may want to consider joining the 28

Koinonia institute and walking with a group online in a self-paced environment, studying the Bible together. We are in an era of our Christian faith where literacy in the word of God is at an all-time low, and not just in the pews, but also in the pulpits. You never know what God has in store for your future so make sure you’ve created the opportunity to fulfill his Kingdom vision for your life by being thoroughly equipped with the word of God. Everyone God uses is surprised that they get the call from Him. As you study the heroes of the faith through the generations, you will find all of them have had a significant devotional life that included regular, serious study of the word of God.
