n this month’s “Personal Update” news journal, we are focusing on some amazing facts for our faith. In this month’s cover article, our friend, Bob Cornuke, opens up to share his thoughts concerning “The Return to Mt. Sinai” and gives us an insight into his personal feelings as he revisited this enigmatic site in Saudi Arabia. We are also republishing an article by Chuck Missler which he wrote in 1998. At that time, Chuck was one of a very few Biblical scholars who supported the idea that the real Mt. Sinai was in northwestern Saudi Arabia. Subsequently Chuck and Bob became very good friends and shared in many exploratory adventures together. THE RETURN TO MOUNT SINAI
I
t had been thirty-two years since I ventured into the blistering Saudi Arabian desert with Larry Williams. I never really thought I would ever be allowed to return to that mysterious mountain the locals call Jabaal Musa (Mountain of Moses). But there I was with Ron Matsen and his son Ben, along with movie producer Jim Schmidt. In February of 2020, we saw an opening to visit and explore what many have come to call the Real Mount Sinai. Being there again seemed quite surreal. Thirty-two years earlier, Larry and I caused a real sensation when we brought back photographic images of that black-peaked mountain. Many began to question if those burnt appearing stones atop the mountain could actually be the result of God descending on Mount Sinai in flames like a furnace. Many other landmarks photographed then matched in startling alignment with what the Bible had described in the book of Exodus. Back then, we were arrested and even threatened with death.

A handy bit of ingenuity brought about a daring escape, but unfortunately, much of the film taken then had to be discarded in the desert. That escape of sorts was the reason we had a movie producer from Hollywood along with us on this trip into the Saudi Kingdom. Jim was doing research and scouting potential locations for filming of a major motion picture about our exploits. The movie, “The Mountain of Fire” was in the final stages of pre-production. My first visit to Saudi Arabia was way back in 1988. Since then I found a wealth of esoteric information that existed in university libraries which overwhelmingly leaned in favor of Jabal al-Lawz as being the actual real Mount Sinai. Larry also received much confirmation from experts such as Dr. Allen Kerkeslager who wrote: “You will be pleased to find that you have some good, solid evidence for your views. A Jewish tradition dating to at least 250 bce . . . identified Mount Sinai with the highest mountain near ancient Madyan, which is the modern town of Al-bad. The most likely candidate, I have concluded, is Jabal al-Lawz.” I was also sent a voluminous doctoral dissertation on the location of Mount Sinai in Saudi Arabia by a Dr. Chuck Whittaker. in his dissertation were: “With the many varied arguments given in this paper demonstrating the biblical significance of Jabal al-Lawz, this site in Saudi Arabia remains the best candidate for Mount Sinai/Horeb.” In Bible Review Magazine, Dr. Frank Moore Cross, Professor Emeritus at Harvard University, claimed that “a reasonable guess for the identity of Mount Sinai is Jabal-al Lawz.” I would also learn that a host of ancient historians pointed to either Arabia or to Jabal al-Lawz directly as the real Mount Sinai. Philo of Alexandria (25 bc to ad 40) points to Arabia as the traditional location of Mount Sinai. Eusebius (4th century ad) locates “the mountain of God” in “the outlying countryside of Madiam.” He also located Madiam (Madyan) itself “toward the desert of the Saracens on the east of the Red Sea.” Jerome (4th century ad) locates Mount Sinai/Horeb “with a location near Madyan in northwestern Arabia east of the Red Sea.” And, of course, Josephus in ad 90 points directly at the highest mountain in that region of Saudi Arabia as the real Mount Sinai, which would be Jabal al-Lawz.

During my first trip up the mountain in 1988, I was overwhelmed with the idea that I was standing on ground once too holy to even touch. Perhaps it still was? Now, I was once again returning to these holy precincts and I wondered if I would again have the same profound feelings of awe that had swept over me then. I certainly knew what to expect as far as landmarks were concerned, but would my heart feel the same? It was, after all, a huge piece of Biblical history, and we might have shared in its discovery – not to mention how drastically the mountain had changed my own life’s trajectory. As I stood at the base of the mountain upon my return, my first response was mixed because of all the new small Bedouin homes and tents that now dotted the vast desert landscape. I was almost angry that such pedigreed ground was somewhat defiled in that way. The mysterious mountain with its stern rocky face still looked down at me the same as before. Its mysterious burnt rocks were still there as well as other landmarks that I remembered. There was the Golden Calf alter, the sacrificial alter at the base of the mountain with white marble pillars still strewn about. I had always tried to keep my emotions in-check on the many other expeditions I have been on, especially when I needed a measured approach with so much riding on the moment. On all explorations you have such rare and fleeting moments of opportunity offered to you to probe about for new finds.

I was doing pretty well this time…that is until I decided to bring Larry Williams into the moment. Larry was MY companion on that first trip of discovery. We had endured so many trying, dangerous moments together; I thought it only appropriate to call him and share the experience I was now having. We had a brief time of melancholy banter revisiting our time at the mountain, and then we said our goodbyes. Ron Matsen was standing close by and seemed to sense cracks forming in my emotional dam. So much of my life has been tied to this mountain, to Larry as a trusted friend, to the vast enormity of discovery this place held in the rich panorama of Biblical history. I put my face on the shoulder of a startled Ron and lost it. It was a totally unexpected and uncharacteristic release of feelings on my part that neither he nor I had expected. I apologized to Ron, who as a pastor had offered that same shoulder as a place of solace to many before me. He however seemed to take the whole moment in stride.

We traveled the next week visiting other old and new findings which only cemented my deep held opinion this was the stage for many Biblical events in history. If it is the real Mount Sinai, it is a place that 10

helped to define three major religions. As I bid farewell to the towering sentinel of a mountain, I believed more than ever that it is indeed the real Mount Sinai. I prayed to God that He would help me to be a good steward of my part in its discovery which will be cemented in my mind and heart for ever.

THE REAL MT. SINAI? Article first published March 1, 1998
ob Cornuke,1 a dear friend, visited us this past week and shared with us one of his recent adventures, which parallels several previous surreptitious visits to Saudi Arabia and clearly appears to corroborate some surprising discoveries. Bob Cornuke and Larry Williams managed - by means we will defer discussing here - to spend some time in Saudi Arabia and made it a point to check out an astounding theory about the Exodus in the Bible.
Most people understand that Mount Sinai is Jebel Musa, in the Sinai Peninsula, where the Monastery of St. Catherine’s is located. Look at any competent Bible atlas, and it will probably include a “?” since that location is traditional, but speculative. There are a number of tenuous conjectures associated with this location and numerous books have been written suggesting alternative candidates, among them Jebel Helal further north in the Sinai Peninsula, or Jebel Serbal, in the south. Another candidate is Har Karkom, known to the Bedouins as Jebel Ideid, also in the north.2 None of these, all in the Sinai Peninsula, have any real archaeological evidence supporting them. However, Moses, when first exiled from Egypt, dwelt in Midian, at the base of Mt. Sinai. Midian was in the northwest corner of Saudi Arabia. The Crossing Point With scuba gear, they discovered a remarkable land bridge crossing the Strait of Tiran and the southern extremity of the Gulf of Aqaba, between Saudi Arabia and the Sinai Peninsula. Presently about 50 ft. underwater 16

and several hundred yards in width, it drops several thousand feet on either side. The topography of the southern tip of the Sinai also fits the details of the Exodus narrative well. Jabal al Lawz Passing the bitter springs of Marah, they came to the mountain known as Jabal al Lawz. Moses kept sheep at Mt. Sinai (Exodus 2:21; 3:1ff); Bob and Larry found vegetation suitable for grazing. (The Israelites camped there 11 months.) Jabal al Lawz rises about 8,000 feet above the desert. It consists of two snub-nosed peaks, with a natural amphitheater between them; the stage on which the most momentous drama in history had been played out. However, as one approaches closer to the mountain, one encounters military guards and a chain link fence, 15 feet high, topped with barbed wire and a sign, in Arabic and English: ARCHAEOLOGICAL AREA WARNING: "IT IS UNLAWFUL TO TRESPASS." VIOLATORS ARE SUBJECT TO PENALTIES STIPULATED IN THE ANTIQUITIES REGULATIONS PASSED BY ROYAL DECREE NO. M 26, U 23.6.1392 Nevertheless, slipping past the guards at night and digging under the fence, Bob and Larry continued their adventure. Just south of the mountain, they found what they believe may have been the battlefield of Rephidim (Exodus 17:1, 8; 19:2; Numbers 33:14, 15), a dozen football fields in size. They also found a large altar made up of extremely large, stacked boulders. On one of them they found pictographs of cattle, not sheep native to Arabia. These pictographs resembled the Apis bulls of Egypt. Could this have been the altar for the Golden Calf? (Cf. Exodus 32.) VOLUME 30 | ISSUE 07 |

As one reaches the higher elevations of Jabal al Lawz, the ground turns black, dark like obsidian; the rocks look almost like coal. (Yet when they’re broken, they were actually granite.) They were not volcanic; they appeared as if scorched from above (Exodus 19:18). They even found an unusually large crevice in which a man could hide (Exodus 33:22?) They also found an old stream bed; “the brook that descended out of the mount” (Deuteronomy 9:21?) At the base of the mount, they also found two huge rocks-perhaps 60 ft. long-wedged together, with a flat stone in the middle; possibly the altar of the Bible? (Exodus 20:24-26). Nearby, they also found the remains of the 12 pillars, all in a row, each one about 18 ft. in diameter, spaced 5 ft. apart (Exodus 24:4). Around the mountain, about 400 yards distant, they also found what appeared to be the boundary markers, the bounds set by Moses at the base of the mountain (Exodus 19:12, 21-23). Needless to say, Bob and Larry are convinced that Jabal al Lawz is, indeed, the long-sought Mount Sinai of the Bible. We understand that a number of books will begin to assemble what is known about the site, and there has been talk of a television documentary.

AN OPEN OPPORTUNITY
I
n September of 2019, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) officially opened its doors to tourists. Previously, travel to the Kingdom was almost entirely restricted to expatriate workers, those with business visas, and religious pilgrims visiting the holy cities of Mecca and Medina. As soon as I heard of this new development, I jumped onto the KSA Visitor’s website and made my application to travel to this previously forbidden destination. The Importance of Independent Investigation Ever since reading Bob’s book, “Mountain of Fire” back in 2001, I have been exploring and examining every bit of information, articles, or pictures I could find concerning the evidence for the Biblical Exodus account. There are certain key events recorded in Scripture that provide the fundamentals for our faith in the Biblical narrative. The early Church pointed to the Cross and the Resurrection as irrefutable proof that Jesus Christ was the only one who provides our salvation. For the Jews, a “salvation” experience happened when they departed Egypt, crossed the Red Sea, and arrived at the foot of Mount Sinai. When you consider the traditional site in the Sinai Peninsula, these events have

very little verifiable evidence. Therefore, you can understand why most modern Jews do not take the Biblical account of the Exodus seriously. This is aided by the fact that many internationally recognized experts dispute the historicity of these stories. Dr. Zahi Hawass, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities and Director of the Giza Pyramids Excavation, wrote, “Archaeologists who have worked here have never turned up evidence to support the account in the Bible.” 1 The skepticism continues with contemporary Jewish religious leaders. David Wolpe, Rabbi of Sinai Temple in Los Angeles, CA; Assistant to the Chancellor at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America in New York who was named “one of the 500 Most Influential People in Los Angeles” in 2016 and again in 2017, “The Most Influential Rabbi in America” by Newsweek Magazine and “One of the 50 Most Influential Jews in the World” by The Jerusalem Post, says “The truth is that virtually every modern archeologist who has investigated the story of the Exodus, with very few exceptions, agrees that the way the Bible describes the Exodus is not the way it happened, if it happened at all.” 2 These d isturbing s tatements c hallenged m e t o d ig d eeper i nto t his paradigm event in the history of the nation and the people of Israel. As a result of my research over the past 18 years, I was convinced that I could only take this quest so far without actually investigating the archeological sites themselves. Feet on the Ground On 21 February 2020, Bob Cornuke, Jim Schmidt, my son Ben and I began a journey that would take us to a place where quite possibly God made Himself known to Moses and the Children of Israel. From the moment we arrived in Saudi Arabia, we all sensed that this was going to be an amazing experience. Armed with cameras, microphones, drones, hiking gear, and lots of water, we were ready to seek out all the places that I had only visited through the lens of someone else’s camera. 1 2

I know for Bob, arriving back into a nation that had once captured and imprisoned him in 1988 was a very strange sensation. During our first full day with our guide, we went to the perimeter of the Golden Calf Altar, which is east of the foot of the Black Mountain (or Jebel Musa by the local Bedouins). As we initially stood at the base of this towering mountain, we all felt a real sense of excitement when we considered the fact that this was quite possibly a site that would have been visited by not only Moses but Elijah, Jesus, and the apostle Paul. Ready to Show Unlike Bob’s first visit, where he barely escaped and was only able to smuggle out a few photographs, we came prepared to capture as much of our expedition as possible. Our return trip home found us racing against the Covid-19 lockdowns that were closing in around us. Fortunately, we were able to reach our homes before the international doors of travel slammed shut. When we were in Saudi Arabia, Bob and I discussed the best way to present our findings and analysis. We agreed that it would be great to have both of us working together to give a live, multi-session presentation. During the mandatory isolation period here in New Zealand, my son Ben and I have been able to collate and catalog our film footage and are now ready to incorporate this new evidence for the Exodus into our upcoming presentations. For now, given the sensitiveness of some of our film footage, the analysis we provide, and the conclusions that we have come to, we will only be able to publicly share this information with our K-House family in person. Therefore, please pray for an open door for both Bob, me, and the whole team here at K-House as we wait patiently for the traveling ban to be lifted.
