T
hese are dark times indeed if you only observe it through the fading light of a world gone mad. As Jesus taught in Luke 11:34,35,
“The lamp of the body is the eye. Therefore, when your eye is good, your whole body also is full of light. But when your eye is bad, your body also is full of darkness. Therefore, take heed that the light which is in you is not darkness.”

Fortunately, we are not called to stand in the darkness but to walk in the Light. 1 John 1:6,7 tells us, “If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.”

rom the first family to your family, a threat lurks for every child. Genesis 4 fails to record the reaction of either Adam or Eve upon hearing that one son (Cain) killed another son (Abel). Several months later, upon the birth of a third son, Eve named him Seth saying, “For God has appointed another seed for me instead of Abel, whom Cain killed.” Surely her pain endured, and her questions lingered. The attack on the family persists to this day. Is it a coincidence that Paul when writing to the church at Ephesus preceded his teaching on Spiritual Warfare1 with teaching on family relationships?2 From fratricide to fiat, control and consequences abound regarding the welfare of your child. “Due to the increasing frequency of stories being exposed regarding children taken away from their families for simply disagreeing with their doctors, we felt it was time to put up a completely separate website to document these tragic stories. Brian Shilhavy’s book Medical Kidnapping: A Threat to Every Family in America Today is available on Amazon where we read the following in its description: “If you live in the United States of America today, and you have children in your home under the age of 18, every day you are in danger of losing your children to the State through medical kidnapping. Something as simple as bringing your child to the local emergency room to care for an injury or sickness puts you at risk. You could be accused of medically abusing or neglecting your child, and having a doctor direct a social worker to remove the child or children from your custody by force. From disagreement with a professional to a decree from a politician, parental influence is further eroded. CNN reported in 2019 that “Amid an ongoing measles outbreak, New York is requiring schoolchildren to be vaccinated, even if parents have religious objections. Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed legislation Thursday that removes nonmedical exemptions from school vaccination requirements. The law goes into effect immediately, his office said.”5 Parental authority and love take a backseat to a politician’s agenda. Make no mistake, legitimate concerns can drive these sorts of laws and decisions. That said, reasonable and informed adults can reach different conclusions regarding certain vaccines. At the very least, individual A politician worries health concerns compete with public about re-election and health concerns in these discussions. With this law and so many similar ones, the authority of the parent is replaced by the authority of the powerful. On August 15, 2020, the Tennessee Star reported, “Parents of students who attend Rutherford County Schools (RCS) must agree not to monitor their child’s online classroom sessions. Officials at all county schools are asking parents to sign forms agreeing not to watch these virtual classes.”6 During my twenty-plus years of teaching mathematics at a public high school, I welcomed parents into my classroom. for this, and it was a different time (although not that long ago) when the public schools were decidedly different than they are today. Few parents were either able or interested in listening to a math lesson from an undersized chair in the back of the classroom–each parent knew that they were welcome. I was teaching their children. And herein lies the foundational issue that all this reveals. Under this decision (since modified), a parent would have to think twice about entering the kitchen during the child’s online lesson! The doctrine of “in loco parentis” appears throughout court decisions of the twentieth century, and it allows schools to act “in place of the parent.” In this, the blurring of the Whose child is it – authority begins. Whose child is the parent’s or the it – the parent’s or the State’s acting State’s acting in place in place of the parent? Increasingly the State is getting more and more of the parent? authority over children in medical decisions, vaccination decisions, and educational decisions. We live in a time where the “fight for rights” and the “dreamin’ for freedom” themes prevail, and with this article, I am asking you to consider this under the topic of parental rights and freedom. In 1922 Oregon passed a law called the Compulsory Education Act, which required school-age children attend only public schools. In 1925, the Supreme Court of the United States unanimously7declared this law unconstitutional. Writing for the Court, Association Justice James Clark McReynolds stated that children were not “the mere creature[s] of the state” (268 U.S. 510, 535), and that, by its very nature, the traditional American understanding of the term liberty prevented the State from forcing students to accept instruction only from public schools. parents or guardians and that the ability to make such a choice was a “liberty” protected by the Fourteenth Amendment.” A century later, this struggle persists. Let’s close with these verses from Malachi, which are the final verses in the typical Bible on your tables: “Remember the Law of Moses, My servant, which I commanded him in Horeb for all Israel, with the statutes and judgments. Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord. And he will turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the earth with a curse.”8 8 Malachi 4:4-6

DEFENDING THE FAMILY
T
he attack on the Biblical family unit has never been greater. The pervasive influences of secular philosophy, psychology, and sociology have driven the traditional family unit to the brink of extinction. In writing to the church at Ephesus, the apostle Paul warned that “you should no longer walk as the rest of the Gentiles walk, in the futility of their mind.”1 Sadly many Christians are still looking to the “broken cisterns” 2 of the world to find answers for their domestic challenges. Jesus said, “If the blind leads the blind, both will fall into a ditch.”3 Therefore, taking instruction from the blind guides of this world destines you to failure. Your Marriage
The institution of marriage was created by God before the fall of man. Designed within the relationship of marriage is a structure that reflects the unity of the Trinity. flesh,”4 the term “one flesh” is translated from the Hebrew word ekh-awd. The Hebrew Shema states, “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.”5 The English word “one” used here is translated from the same Hebrew word ekh-awd. This divine relationship enjoys equality within the structure of authority. Solomon wrote that there are at least five benefits of enduring companionship.6 Thus many people seek a life-long partner to achieve these benefits. In the end, most relationships are only as strong as the link that binds them together. Therefore, Solomon adds a third element that binds husband and wife together7 to create this mysterious union of being “one.” This “third cord,” as he describes it, provides the stable structure that binds and bonds the two individuals into the oneness that Scripture talks about. Where is this “third cord” found? Again, Solomon gives the answer in his collection of Proverbs, where he refers to the Word of God as a cord that should be bound “continually upon your heart.”8 Therefore, the third cord (God’s Word) should bind you together and guide you together. The Bible clearly defines the roles and responsibilities of both the husband and the wife. In chapter 5 of Paul’s Ephesian epistle, he gives one rule for the wife and one rule for the husband.9 Paul then goes on to show that the underlying truth in this teaching relates not only to thriving within a marital relationship but its deeper meaning with respect to Christ and the church.10

Using Jesus Christ as the example, Paul points out that unity (being one) is only achieved through submission and that true submission requires sacrifice.11 There is a Biblical cycle of submission and love that can grow increasingly tighter and tighter over time, which ultimately results in true oneness in marriage. Where there is submission, love is the reward. Where there is love, submission is the reward. How are marital submission and sacrifice actually accomplished? Peter gives some wonderfully practical guidelines in chapter three of his first epistle.12 Your marriage can be truly blessed if both husband and wife submit to the Biblical cycle of submission and love. Your Home The Book of Proverbs often uses the idiom of a walled city to speak of the heart of an individual. Solomon said, “Whoever has no rule over his own spirit is like a city broken down, without walls.”13

This idiom can also be used to describe the heart of the family, which is the home. To live safely in this “city,” it should have both walls and gates. Walls define boundaries and gates control access. It is interesting that, in the time of ancient Israel, to sit at the gates was considered the privilege of the elders of that city. They had the responsibility of judging everyone and everything that entered. At the center of every city was the citadel, or castle keep, which would have been the high-value target of the enemy. Its protection was the ultimate responsibility of these gatekeepers. Our homes should operate like walled cities that protect their inhabitants. Imagine your home as a walled city with many concentric inner walls leading ultimately to the castle keep, which is the heart of the family. Today a hostile invasion is storming into our homes aimed at the most intimate areas of our life. Most homes are truly “unwalled cities.” Instant, unsupervised intimacy is freely available to all family members. From the snare of the easily accessible world-wide-web to the proliferation of personal communication and entertainment devices, the home is overwhelmed with instant access to show and see all manner of intimate material. Intimacy should be based on trust, trust should be built on commitment, commitment should be established by experience, experience should be gained through exposure, exposure should be obtained by contact, and contact should be made through personal relationships. Sadly, the cry for personal freedom is drowning out the call for personal accountability. Married couples have the responsibility to protect each other. Parents have the responsibility to protect their children. We all have a responsibility to protect each other. Your Children The Bible tells us that “children are a blessing from the Lord.”14 As such, parents are given the awesome responsibility of raising them in the fear and knowledge of God. All children need at least these six things throughout their life: provision, protection, direction, education, correction, and compassion. 14 Psalm 127:3-5

The world would like to convince Christian parents today to stop influencing their children with regards to Biblical standards of living. Their motto is “let the child make up its own mind.” The world wants your children, and it will take them from you whenever you decide to give them up. No matter the age of your children, you will still be older and therefore wiser than them. Never, never give up your responsibility as the chief influence for good in your child’s life. Age should not force a threshold of parental disengagement Never, never give up defined simply as the point after your responsibility as which you stop being the teaching, the chief influence for caring, protective parent of your child. Your children will always need good in your child’s life. and seek good guidance regardless of their age so why shouldn’t you as their parent be their first port of call when it comes to gaining direction on the uncertain sea of life. Who is really teaching your Children?
The Bible is the ultimate authority on what is right and wrong. The Bible is the best resource for gaining insight and understanding. The Bible is the best road map in a world that has lost its way. VOLUME 30 | ISSUE 09 |

Where the worldly paths of life meander without purpose, the Bible offers light in the darkness.15 You, as parent, have this awesome opportunity to plant the Word of God into the fertile hearts of your children. Solomon promises, “Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it.”16 How can you accomplish this with your children? Moses told the parents in Israel concerning the Law of God, “You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.”

What is the primary teaching device in front of your child’s eyes today? What life-style legacy will you leave your child? Children are the message that every parent sends to a generation they will not meet. What message from you will your children carry? The Bible tells us that we live in perilous times.17 Therefore everyone needs to be constantly on guard, repairing our walls, and fixing our gates. Husbands need to truly love their wives. Wives need to honour their husbands. Parents need to lovingly lead their children. Children need to respect and obey their parents. We need to “be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.”18 We need to be diligent about the stewardship of our marriage, our home, and our children God has given us. F
or years I have explored the idea of creating material for kids that taught them critical thinking skills. While living in England in 1995, I was given a chance to make a Bible presentation to the local middle school students during one of their morning assemblies. That gave me the chance to try and create something that had been swirling around in my head for a long time. That opportunity birthed the first of a series of “You Decide” presentations. I began the presentation by telling the children, “You are a Scientist. You must decide which came first; The Chicken or the Egg.” The excitement that was generated in the hall that day sparked a passion in me to prepare this young generation of future adults with a skill that was not, in my estimation, being taught. Over the years of ministry partnership with Chuck Missler, I have witnessed the benefit of not just teaching people the Bible but also teaching them how to learn for themselves. The motto of Acts 17:11 stands as a core belief and practice within Koinonia House. Therefore, teaching people how to think is as important as teaching them what to think. Lessons from the Lockdown During the months of forced isolation during the first half of the year here in New Zealand, my wife and I had plenty of time for reflection and vision casting. The lingering desire to further develop materials for kids was once again rekindled. By the time we came out of lockdown, we were ready to get active within our local community. a lady from the local community approached me to offer her heartfelt thanks for providing her with the teaching she’d “been looking for her whole life.” She then went on to ask me if I could also do something for the children. I believe that this simple request to me was like hearing directly from God. “Of course we can,” I replied. That put in motion a week of prayer and preparation for the first-ever K-House Kid’s Club here in New Zealand. We started with a slightly updated version of my “You are a Scientist. You must decide which c a m e fi r s t ; Th e Chicken or the Egg” presentation. With the use of some PowerPoint slides and animation, it went better than I expected. I’m not sure who loved it the most: the children or me, but it provided an outlet to create a resource that might even be of benefit to others. At the time of writing this article, I have created 11 sessions that build on each other from week to week. Simplified Apologetics During this recent journey, I have once again discovered that children are very perceptive and can comprehend some very complicated concepts. By using these simple presentations, I have introduced them to the four main philosophical arguments for the existence of God. The Ontological Argument (proving the existence of God through logic), the Cosmological Argument (proving the existence of God through the First Cause Argument), the Teleological Argument (proving the existence of God by showing both design and purpose in the universe), and the Moral Argument (proving the existence of God through the presences of a moral compass in all mankind). Although it is important to emphasize that the process of this curriculum development is in its early stages, I trust that by God’s grace and 22

inspiration, we will be able to formally offer this material to our wider K-House family soon. At the moment, I am simply using public domain clipart from the internet. Therefore, a lot of the continuity of the message is carried by me as I tell the stories and challenging the children. Personal interaction with the children is very important. Amazingly, our group, which ranges from 3 to 13 years old, all seem to work together as one big friendly family. Another interesting facet is that we require the parents of the children to attend and participate in the lessons. This is no dropyour-child-off Sunday School service. Therefore, everyone is getting

the same input, and the parents can carry on the exploration and experience in their own homes. A Call to Action With all that is going on in the world right now, I believe the children of today will face a world as adults that most of us cannot even imagine. As the saying goes, “An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure.” Preparing our children, our grandchildren, and any other children we can reach out to, should be a top priority in our life. May I ask all of you to keep us in your prayers as we continue to develop and refine these materials?
