By the time of their last meeting with Jesus, they had received the Great Commission. n the face of the rising tide of evil in the world, we are told that we have a strong foundation that cannot be moved. Psalm 16:7-9 says, “I will bless the LORD who has given me counsel; My heart also instructs me in the night seasons. I have set the LORD always before me; Because He is at my right hand I shall not be moved. Therefore, my heart is glad, and my glory rejoices; My flesh also will rest in hope.”
This foundation provides the establishment of an enduring hope that keeps our soul safe in times of trouble. Hebrew 6:17-20 tells us, “Thus God, determining to show more abundantly to the heirs of promise the immutability of His counsel, confirmed it by an oath, that by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we might have strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us. This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters the Presence behind the veil, where the forerunner has entered for us, even Jesus, having become High Priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.” May the God of Peace keep your heart as you rest in His unfathomable Love. In the latter days of the private ministry of Jesus to His disciples, He told them of the Promise of the Father, which would be essential for them to fulfill their mission. “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever;”

“But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.”

It is certainly clear that Jesus was preparing His Church to fulfill its purpose of reaching out to the whole world with the Gospel. When Jesus meets them in Jerusalem, we are told, “When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, ‘Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?’”

establish the Throne of David2 upon which he would rule the nations with a rod of iron.3 We see that even the mother of James and John got into the flow by interceding on behalf of her two sons. When she approached Jesus, “He said unto her, ‘What wilt thou?’ She saith unto him, ‘Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on the left, in thy kingdom.’”

At this point in the Gospel narrative, it is clear that the disciples were not on the same page as their Master. While He was preparing for His own sacrifice to save the lost, they were focused on their own position in His coming kingdom. Therefore, it is understandable that they were distracted with their own thinking and not truly hearing the word and will of Jesus. As we examine the response of Jesus to the disciples’ last question regarding the timing of the Kingdom being restored to Israel, we read, “And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.”

Once again, we see Jesus not answering questions that are off-target or off-topic. I believe the disciples suffered from something that I see happening today within the Church. It is a type of spiritual myopia. Myopia is the medical term for nearsightedness. People with myopia see objects clearly only when they are close to the eye, while distant objects appear blurred or fuzzy. In other words, metaphorically, you become I believe the disciples so absorbed in the near-term events suffered from something that you can lose the wider and more that I see happening long-term picture. today within the Church. sudden removal of the Church via the Rapture. Given the increasingly chaotic climate in the world today, many within the Body of Christ are finding consolation in their belief that they are witnessing the “end of days.” Some might think, “After all, God should get on with His terrible judgment on this rebellious planet.” I’ve even heard some say they can’t wait to see this perverted world crushed under the hand of an Almighty God. It is true that almost every day, you will see events unfolding that have profound prophetic implications. The pace at which the world is racing to the Biblically predicted end is breathtaking. I have also been amazed by the number of “prophecy teachers” that have attempted to provide all kinds of insights one day only to have their ideas overturned by the revelation of the next set of unexpected events. This is a white-knuckle ride for sure. The Danger of “Rature-itis” It is exciting, indeed, to see these things begin to take shape on our immediate horizon and to come to grips with the impending reality of Christ’s return. But there is another danger we must be aware of. I call it “rapture-itis.” There is a tragic fatalism that can immobilize the Christian body from truly “occupying” until He comes.4 We need to continue to be responsible stewards of His blessings—including our unique blessings of this country and its heritage— and There is a tragic and also prepare for an uncertain future unhealthy tendency for until He does return for us. the erroneous and myopic presuppositions of the past and, motivated by the imminent horizon, be focusing on His priorities for the kingdom in the time that remains. Power with a Purpose It is to this end that Jesus refocused His disciples by telling them, “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”

As we see the tide of darkness and the spirit of fear filling our communities, we should be standing tall as a beacon that points people to hope. We should bring the healing salve of God’s truth to those who are hurting. We can only accomplish this noble task through the power of the Holy Spirit. It is His desire to work through willing vessels to bring glory and honour to Jesus Christ. An Apostolic Epilog At the end of the apostle Paul’s life, he was in prison, where he was surrounded with the reality of his own impending death. Injustice, social chaos, and political corruption were everywhere. Yet in the midst of these terrible times he penned his last letter to Timothy in which he states,
“I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.”

THE DUTY TO DEFINE
“T
here are two burdens every aspiring critical thinker must consider when making or evaluating an argument—the evidentiary burden and the persuasive burden.”1 Underlying these burdens are several duties necessary to meet them—in this article, we will consider what I call “the Duty to Define.” Words and phrases form the foundation of any argument and when their meaning is ambiguous or duplicitous, so is the position that relies on these words or phrases.
Have you ever said, “Jesus bless you” rather than “God bless you” to a stranger or even to an acquaintance? For the Christian, Jesus is God and God is Jesus. Consider what Jesus said about Himself, “I and the Father are One.”2 John’s Gospel begins with the concept that, “The Word was God. The Word dwelt among us.”3 And yet, even though the believer would agree that the two phrases are synonymous, the lack of specificity of the phrase “God bless you” can be a more comfortable salutation. (Come on, admit it! Or better yet, try it and see what you think!) Legislation underscores the importance of defining words. The word “definition”4 appears one hundred seventy-one (171) times in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010.5 The subsequent legal and political challenges faced by what is commonly referred to as “Obamacare” were convoluted enough. In a New York State law with considerably less verbiage – dubbed “The Taylor Law”6 – section two hundred one (§2017) is titled “Definitions.” This section includes twelve (12) paragraphs, some of which contain sub-paragraphs! Our lawmakers understand the need for defining terms and phrases! The study of mathematics begins with definitions8—the definition of a rectangle or of a quadratic equation or of a matrix. Some of our gracious readers may remember doing two column geometry proofs while attending secondary school. You may shudder at their recollection! A simple example is provided below if you can overcome the horror! Statement 1. AB is the perpendicular bisector of PQ 2. m < AMQ = 90° 3. m < AMP = 90° 4. m < AMQ = m < AMP

Notice the reliance on definition in the proof and before that in the law. Critical thinkers – whether legal, mathematical or political – must be clear on the definitions of words used by the speaker and while speaking. We have all been a part of conversations where we seem to be talking past each other and very often this results from a misunderstanding of use of a word or phrase. From Wikipedia: “In parliamentary procedure, the verb to table has the opposite meaning in different countries: In the United States, to ‘table’ usually means to postpone or suspend consideration of a pending motion. In the rest of the English-speaking world, to ‘table’ means to begin consideration (or reconsideration) of a proposal.”9 In August, CNN correspondent Omar Jimenez reported from Kenosha, Wisconsin. AFTER POLICE SHOOTING.”10 Social media jumped on this with many memes and posts focusing on the “fiery” while others focused on

the “mostly peaceful protests.” Rather than take sides, the critical thinker who embraces the “duty to define” described herein asks the questions: • What is meant by “mostly?” • What is meant by “peaceful?” • What is meant by “protest?” “Mostly” requires some sort of quantification. Is it being used synonymously with “majority” and means more than fifty (50%) percent? Is it intended to convey a near “unanimity” and means nearly one hundred (100%) percent? Or does it lie somewhere in between? And if so, where is the in-between point? Let’s say that there were 100 people, and 75 of them can be described as peaceful protestors – that means 25 of them are not. Is the definition of mostly peaceful protests satisfied with 75% compliance? And how would we know? Was there somebody reliably determining who was peaceful and who was unpeaceful. The duty to define requires more questioning. What is peaceful? What is protest versus what is riotous? unlawful act leading to damage, destruction, or death is considered unpeaceful protesting? If the damage is caused only during a four (4) hour period from (say) 10:00 pm to 2:00 am, does that mean satisfy the definition of a “mostly peaceful protest?” After all, for twenty of the twenty-four hours there was no violence – that is over eighty (80%) percent of the time that things were peaceful. I can go on and on with this, and I am unashamed to admit that I have. When I hear things—and especially terms and phrases—I start asking questions. Those around me get exasperated as I begin my journey to define terms and phrases rather than react to them. With this duty to define comes a commitment to understand. “So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath.”11 “He who answers a matter before he hears it, It is folly and shame to him.”12 Whether the discipline described above is sufficient to successfully engage in conversation that is factual and persuasive is beyond the scope of this article. My training as a mathematician and as a legal advocate have cooked it into my thinking. And I am pretty sure that our Heavenly Father is pleased by the diligence. “Do you not know that we shall judge angels? How much more things that pertain to this life? If then you have judgments concerning things pertaining to this life, do you appoint those who are least esteemed by the church to judge? I say this to your shame. Is it so, that there is not a wise man among you, not even one, who will be able to judge between his brethren?”
