Styrian “Terminators” clearing up Japan Styrian environmental specialist Komptech is providing clearing-up equipment to Japan – large order placed to the value of two million Euros Frohnleiten (May 2nd 2011) – Styrian company Komptech in Frohnleiten is providing specialist equipment to Japan for clear-up work following the earthquake and tsunami disaster. The machines are set to help out in the processing of debris for subsequent treatment and further processing. “In the first step, the vast quantities of debris and rubbish must be shredded before they can be transported away for subsequent re-utilisation”, says Komptech Managing Director Josef Heissenberger, explaining how the existing material is being dealt with. “We have the perfect machines for this task – machines that must be appropriately sturdy yet also mobile”. For the job at hand, the Frohnleiten specialists in waste treatment and biomass processing have precisely the right machines in their range. The general-purpose waste shredders are called “Terminator” and “Crambo” and their deployment is dependent on the composition of the material. The Japanese partner with whom the company has worked together for 15 years now has placed an order for five additional machines for this task, having a total order volume of two million Euros. Equipment available locally has been requisitioned for the disaster and is being deployed for the clear-up work. In addition to the processing of material caused by the disaster, Komptech is also hoping for a change in Japanese energy policy. “Following the nuclear disaster, Japan will have to realign itself more strongly in the sector of renewable energy sources”, adds Heissenberger. “It is biomass in particular that is playing a crucial role here”, he says, touching upon the second revenue stream of the company. Heissenberger will get a first-hand picture of the situation in the disaster area when he travels personally to Japan in the next few weeks to help those responsible in any way possible. For this purpose, the Austrian Chamber of Commerce is also organising a trip to Japan at the start of June this year. The Komptech Group is headquartered in Frohnleiten (Styria), employs about 500 people at nine locations in five countries, and last year posted a turnover of about €88 m. The €100m barrier may well be broken this year for the first time in the company’s history.
