The Bicycle Commuter Center in Pittsburgh, PA provides a cost effective prototype to support the sustainable revitalization of downtown communities by encouraging cycling. Initiated during the adaptive reuse of the neighboring historic building, the center occupies a previously underutilized easement. Constructed from two recycled shipping containers the site now provides secure indoor and outdoor storage for 49 bikes. A large scale graphic gesture makes the center an iconic location and animates its urban setting. Achieved for $90,000 (building and site work), the approach offers an affordable, replicable model with a strong identity for any community wishing to add amenities for urban cyclists.
