DJ KURIOUS GEORGE GFM: So how did it all begin? DJ KG: Well, I guess it began at an early age for me. My parents told me that I have been into all types of music since I came into existence lol. But I remember falling in love with hip hop at age 4. My uncle played a record called “My Name Is D-Nice” by the rapper D-Nice from Boogie Down Productions. To this day it is one of the funkiest rap songs I’ve ever heard. The beat is crazy and his flow was superior. From that day forward, I truly fell in love with music and I wanted to know how to make it and perform it. As many people know, I didn’t start off dj’ing. I’ve only been dj’ing 3 years. I started out being a singer/producer/songwriter (and I still do all of those!) But dj’ing goes hand in hand with everything I was doing musically. I had always been interested in learning more about the artform, and in the clubs I was going to at the time, the dj’s would play the same songs over and over again with no type of technique, so I said hell, I can do better than them!!! So I started working on my craft, got my equipment up, my manager Precise discovered me, and here we are now! Lol……. GFM: What or who gave you that initial push? DJ KG: I have to say that my manager, Precise, was the driving force in creating the Kurious George movement. In all honesty, there wouldn’t be a DJ Kurious George if it wasn’t for him. He was the first person outside of my immediate family that believed that I had what it takes to be a top DJ in the game. It started from him hearing people talk about how hot my beats were and for those that are familiar with Precise know that he is a great rapper as well as a photographer, videographer, commercial editor, etc. I was in the studio making beats one day and he came to shop with me and we instantly formed a musical chemistry. He also noticed my very large musical library and the fact that I had a lot of new music that he or the rest of the world hadn’t heard yet lol. I was playing around djing and I guess it clicked in his head “Hmmm….this dude could shake up the dj game in SC” And ever since then he put his time and effort into molding me into what I am today! GFM: Who would you say is throwing the best parties at the moment? DJ KG: Honestly, the best parties I have been to around here have been parties were multiple promotion teams come together and throw a really big event and have great dj’s and a great venue. GFM: What was the first event you ever played at? DJ KG: Well, the first event I ever played at was in 2008. A good friend of mine heard me dj at a house party at her cousin’s house and she told me I was one of the best dj’s she had ever heard. I was like wow! LOL…..so her family had a big dance party at their family reunion and she booked me to dj. I was super nervous, but from the first song to the last they partied til they couldn’t party anymore! GRiND FLU MAGAZINE 25

GFM: What’s the best event you’ve played at? DJ KG: To this date, I have to say the best event I have ever played at has to be The Bartender’s Ball at The Saw Mill in Downtown Greenville. This event was back in 2010, and I dj’ed along side two of the best DJ’s in the Upstate who are also great friends of mine, DJ Scientist and DJ Funky White Boy. The event was so great because there were thousands of people there, all different races, and our musical selection was so ecletic it was crazy!! It’s a great feeling when you dj for a crowd that really appreciates the music itself but also appreciates the true craft of dj’ing. To hear the oooh’s and aaah’s while you are doing a crazy scratch sequence or creating a crazy blend makes you feel like you are on top of the world!!! They actually pay attention to the fact that you are making the records talk to each other, and not just playing a hit song…… GFM: What was your first record you bought? DJ KG: The first record I bought was a LL Cool J – Walking With A Panther!!! Classic LL Album!! I scratched it up trying to scratch it on my pops record player smh!!! GFM: Out of all the tracks that you have, which one never fails? DJ KG: There’s not just one record. Anything from the golden era of Hip Hop and R&B (Late 1989-2000) will rock a crowd. Honestly that’s when music was music! And it shows every time I drop something from that era in the club, the crowd goes crazy!! GFM: What’s you favorite track / record / album / mix set of all time and why? DJ KG: If you haven’t figured out by now, I’m a music junkie LOL!! So there’s no way I could pinpoint one particular track or album and say its my fave of all time. But I will say I do enjoy doing throwback musical sets! Anything from the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, and early 2000’s. There was a lot of good party music in those eras and I love to see people actually dance and party on the dance floor and not throw gang signs and fight all night. Gangstas can boogie too lol, you just gotta know how to bring it out of them. GFM: When all the partying is over how do you like to chill out? DJ KG: I have an old soul….so I just like to kick back, relax, throw on some old school, and pour up some henny and chill. GFM: So how is the local/indie artist scene in your eyes at the moment? DJ KG: The indie scene here is the best I have seen thus far. As a producer, I’ve been grinding on the indie scene since 2005 so I’ve seen it have its ups and downs, and I can truly say that it is looking promising going into 2013. I truly believe we have the most talent up here in the Upstate but it’s been GRiND FLU MAGAZINE 26

overshadowed for so long because people didn’t want to work together and help each other come up. But now I’m seeing a lot of collaborations between different artists and camps and that’s what it takes to make something pop off in this music industry. If Atlanta, New York, Texas, Florida, and California created their major music markets by working together, then why can’t we??? All it takes is a collective effort, hard work, and grind and we can be the same way. GFM: One thing you would change about the current local music scene? DJ KG: I would change the work effort and the collaborative effort in some of the artists. Some artists fail to realize the hard work and grind that goes into making it in the music industry. If you are going to be in the industry, whether you are gonna be a rapper, producer, dj, model, etc, don’t half-ass your way into the industry. Go all out and brand your product. You have to invest in yourself before anyone else will!! And don’t be afraid or ignorant and not work with other people in your field. When you work towards goals with a team, they become easier to reach. Always remember you can’t do it all by yourself!! GFM: Funniest thing that ever happened to you at an event? DJ KG: The funniest thing to ever happen to me while dj’ing was back in 2010 for my bday. I was dj’ing at Presidential and all the staff plotted to get me on stage and had all the girls come and dance on me lol!! I told them not to do it but they did it anyway! There were booty butt cheeks everywhere!!! But I didn’t complain I appreciated ALL of the love I received lol…….. GFM: Who is your favorite DJ and why? DJ KG: It’s a tie between DJ Scientist and DJ Jazzy Jeff. They both are legends in the game and they both have major skills on the 1’s and 2’s. I’ve yet to witness a dj that can manipulate the turntables like these two! I pray that I get as half as good as these two beasts in the game!!! GRiND FLU MAGAZINE 27

GFM: What do you think about MC’s and their role in hiphop/ dance music culture? DJ KG: I think that MC’s play an important role in the hiphop/ dance music culture. They are the ambassadors of the culture. I am an 80’s baby so I think that lyrical skill and content is very important in music. Although there are a lot of MC’s that lack this quality in today’s time, there are quite a few that still possess lyrical skill and content and I feel those MC’s are getting more shine going into 2013. GFM: What advice would you give to up and coming DJs/Promoters? DJ KG: To upcoming DJ’s, please study your craft and take it seriously!!! If you do not have a true passion for music, stay outta the game!! We have enough wack azz wannabe dj’s in the game already, we don’t need anymore! To upcoming promoters, the same advice!! Take the art of promotion seriously!! Just because u shout out parties on twitter and facebook does not make you a promoter!!! If you don’t have a passion for creating great party environments for people, then stay outta the game!!! We have enough fake azz wannabe promoters as it is!!!! GFM: If you could have an event anywhere, where would it be and why? DJ KG: I would love to have a true 80’s baby party at a big venue like the Charter Amphitheatre or Lakeside Park. I would have it there because I would want thousands of people to come out and hear all of the music that made them fall in love with the hip hop and r&b culture!! GFM: If you had a time machine what year would you go back to and why? DJ KG: I would probably go back to 1993 or 1994. But I would want to be the age I am now so I could go to all the hot clubs and concerts that were back in those years!! Man!!! I would love to experience Outkast, Jodeci, Fat Joe and Big Pun, Lil Jon, etc…..Greenville’s night life was poppin back then for real!!!!!! GFM: We all know you are the DJ on Spin 103.3. How did you get the opportunity to do that? DJ KG: Well my team saw the chance to create something that was much needed in this area, and we took the right roads to make it happen. We are still trying to take it to higher heights! The goal is to have an urban station 24/7!! Hopefully we can make that happen really soon!! GRiND FLU MAGAZINE 28

GFM: Give details about Spin 103.3. (how artists can get their music played, do yall interview indie artists, do they get paid for radio play, etc) DJ KG: It works just like any other radio station. If your song is super hot and we get requests for it, it’s getting played! We conduct interviews with indie artists who we see are on their grind and they are doing whatever it takes to make sure their product is heard. We do not charge artists to play their songs!! THAT IS ILLEGAL!!! I repeat, WE DO NOT CHARGE ARTISTS FOR RADIO PLAY!!! Lol……. GFM: Anything else you want to say? Any shouts? DJ KG: First, I have to give thanks to God for allowing me to pursue my dreams and allowing me to do something I love for a living!! Second, I want to thank you guys at Grind Flu Magazine for giving me this chance to give the people a deeper look into DJ Kurious George. I also have to thank my team, the Get Money Gang!!! Without them, I’m nothing!!! Shoutout to my manager Precise, our business manager and manager for Get Money Gang and Da Pregame Sapp aka DJ XXX, my playa partna in crime on Da Pregame and our professional sound and lighting engineer DJ Hot Rod ATL, DJ Scientist, DJ Big Ray, DJ Bran, DJ T-Hustle, DJ Go Hard, DJ Flame, DJ Flea, and everybody who supports our efforts as a crew!! Big shoutout to The Hotgyrlz!! They hold us down always and we love y’all for that!! Shoutout to all of the club owners and promoters who see our vision and allow us to come in and tear the roof off of their establishment night after night!!! We couldn’t do this without you all either!!! Shoutout to Maintain and GOAT ENT!! They support us in all of our endeavors and we appreciate everything greatly!!! To all of my true friends and family, THANK YOU for all of your support over the years and for everything you have done and continue to do. I thank God for you all everyday and I along with my team do this for YOU!!!!!!
