JINX Grind Flu Magazine sat down and interviewed the one and only JINX. He reminds us of what hip-hop use to be- real music from the heart. Now its your change to get to know JINX.
GFM: When did you first start creating music? JINX: I first started creating music my 7th grade year of middle but honestly, I didn't start going hard with it until my 9th grade year of high school. That's when I realized music was my passion. GFM: Who are your musicial inspirations? JINX: My musical inspirations range from Big L all the way to Eminem. I'm a huge Pusha T/Clipse fan as well. I also listen to Jay-Z, Wale, 8Ball & MJG, Drake, Black Thought...Just to name a few. Pretty much anyone with Content and mastered the art of actually using their voice as an instrument. GFM: What did your family do to encourage you to persue your passion? JINX: My family always been supportive as far as loaning me an "EAR" every now and then, giving me their opinions on songs. But, financially I always had to work/hustle to fund my career. Which is a good thing, because when its all said and done, can't no one say they gave me anything. Shout out to my family though...lol GFM: What kind of music do you listen to today? JINX: I listen to mostly rap music but of course I need that R-n-B in my life, just to balance it out. Pretty much depends on what mood I'm in. My father is a big fan of Teddy Pendagrass, Gerald Levert, Luther Vandross etc. So growing up, that kind of rubbed off on me. I'm just a young man with an old soul. GFM: What embarrassing song would I find in your iTunes account? JINX: Vanessa Carlton - 1000 Miles...Don't judge Me. I became a fan after the "White Chicks" movie. GFM: If you dabble in another genre of music, what would it be and why? JINX: Well, I'm hearing that Dubstep is creating a huge wave around the world so I would love to get some of that money. Not too big of a fan of the genre, but I watched some youtube videos of a few concerts and the amount of love and energy it creates is insane. Photography by Jay matermind
GFM: As an artist, what is the best advice you have ever recieved? JINX: As simple as this sounds, "Be Yourself". Because, people are going to hate you and people are going to love you, REGARDLESS. But when you stay true to yourself, no matter how a person feel about you, at least it's genuine emotions. As artist, it's so easy to get caught up in "Perception", just Be Yourself. GFM: Do you play any instruments? if so what? JINX: I can play 3 songs on the piano. and not the full songs neither, just the hooks. So if you consider that playing an instrument then cool. Other than that, my voice is an instrument. I can use it in more ways than any instrument ever created, if you ask me. GFM: If you could perform anywhere in the world, where would it be and why? JINX: If I could perform anywhere in the world, it would be at Madison square garden. Of course, you would expect me to say somewhere overseas but I don't know enough about certain places to even consider them. I go for what I know and I say Madison Square because of its Historical moments from artist like Paul McCartney, Elton John, Jay-Z, Bon Jovi, Eric Clapton & the list goes on. GFM: If you could perform with anyone dead or alive who would it be and why? JINX: I would Love to have performed with Biggie. And to keep it 100% real, I'm not even a huge Biggie fan but that old New York, gritty, slick, coogie sweater rockin genius always had the crowds goin crazy so I would've enjoyed sharing a stage with him for a few minutes.
GFM: Every artist has that one person that have their back, who is your person and tell us about him/her
JINX: My homie Jawaun, without question. He can be a pain in the a** sometimes, but it's always good intentions. He been rockin wit me for like a year, heavy with this music and he takes care a lot of business for me and I can Trust him. There's a certain level of trust that hav to be established within your team before you can actually grow and take your career above and beyond so I'm blessed to have someone like him in my corner. GFM: What hidden talents do you have? JINX: I can draw a little but to be completely honest, Music is really my ONLY talent. It's truly my "CALLING" and I'm humbled by it. I feel like God wants me to put 100% of my heart into this music. GFM: What other loves you have besides music? JINX: I love paintings. especially paintings with deep substance and a Life Message hidden in them. I always been a thinker. Sometimes I over analyze a lot of things but that's just me.
GFM: How do you feel about the indie music scene? JINX: I like what's going on right now with the indie music scene. A plethora of artist are leaving their stamps and building their brands. I mainly focus on whats going on over at my camp for the most part. I try not to worry about what others are doing as much as possible yet keeping up with whats going on as much as possible, if that makes any sense. GFM: What one piece of advice would you give an upcoming artist? JINX: KEEP YOUR BUSINESS IN ORDER. With a lot of artist/rappers, they spend their whole lives recording songs, recording songs and recording songs which is good but if you want someone to take you serious, you have to have your business in place. You have to register your music with Ascap, BMI and/or SESAC. You have to build a brand as well as yourself as an artist. You have to go out their and interact with the consumer so that you can tend to their every need. As artist we tend to be selfish but we have to break out of that in order to obtain longevity. GFM: I am sure the women would like to know if you are single? If so what do you look for any a female? JINX: I'm currently single at the moment. What I like most, is a female that can challenge me mentally. A woman that can hold a conversation, but wont bore me out of my mind. I like them all shapes and sizes, Jinx don't discriminate. But you have to be goal driven and know what you want in life. GFM: What are some upcoming projects you are working on? JINX: I'm currently working on my next mixtape, "Bells & Whistles" which probably be released b the end of the year. I have a movement right now, "Wise Gang" which I really want to establish as well. Everyday I'm recording music and working on my next move so just stay tune. GFM: In what way do you give back to the community? JINX: Recently, My management company funded a Back to School Cook Out which took place in Baltimore, where we handed out Book Bags and school supplies to the less fortunate families. Me personally, i'm a walking testament. I was once lost out here in these streets trying to figure out a way so it's only right I touch on a lot of what I seen, in my music and hope that I can inspire the youth to go out here and be GREAT. GFM: Final Words- give shot outs, advice, etc JINX: I would like to S/O my homie Jawaun, my videographer Jay Mastermind, J Forte' Management, Twanitta Lanay, Nook and everyone else out there supporting this Wise Gang Movement. Apparel/Merchandise Coming Soon. I want to say thank you to the few fans that I do have and salute to all the grinders out their chasing their dream. I want to say R.I.P to Lor D'Shaun and Peace and Blessings to all. Thank You Grind Flu Magazine for the opportunity.
Dominant The south has held the hip hop crown for some time now, and as it continues to progress, South Carolina adds new quality talent to the scene on a frequent basis. The latest addition is newcomer Dominant, a young diverse artist ready to showcase his talent and contribute to the southern hip hop movement. The 26-year-old rising star discovered his musical talent in the second grade. While growing his career in music, Dominant drew inspiration from his neighbor, Zaybo and his local rap group Drunken Gambinoz. He also credits Kris Kross, No Limit, and Cash Money Hot Boyz in playing an influential role in his career. After a few years of development, in 2004 Dominant formed the rap group called Da Heatspeakers. The group did well and managed to create a buzz for themselves throughout the Carolinas. Unfortunately, after four years the group parted ways in 2008 due to poor management. Although the group project failed, that wasn’t going to stop Dominant from pursuing his passion. Shortly after the break-up, he went back to work – this time as a solo artist. He released his first official demo titled “Just a Taste” in the summer of 2008, and gained notoriety with his single “J’s On My Feet”. The catchy track quickly caught the attention of local radio station 98.5 KISS FM, and with that earned him a spot in the station’s hall of fame after a successful seven week winning streak on the their “Battle of the Local Jams” weekly on-air contest. Following the success of “Just a Taste”, Dominant began working diligently on his first solo mixtape project. In the summer of 2009, he teamed up with South Carolina’s DJ Dynamite and released “On My Way to Stardom”. The mixtape showcases his versatility and abilities to adapt to different styles, while also catering to the ladies. “On My Way to Stardom” has served as an excellent introduction for the young artist, and proves that his journey will be full of accomplishments. While the mixtape is still currently in rotation, Dominant remains grounded and anxious to continue down the road of success. His work speaks for itself – he is a young, hungry artist capable of bringing refreshment to hip hop, and progresses in securing his spot as each day passes.
DJ STATIQ
Grind Flu magazine recently caught up with DJ STATIQ and asking him a few questions.
When did you realize you wanted to become a DJ? I was maybe 13 yrs. old when I first played with a record on an old radio/record player that was just sitting in my room. The record was Run DMC's- Dumb Girl. I fell in love with just how the record sounded when I would stop it then brought it back. Of course the record was trash after I was done with it. But it wasn't till I met DJ Dynomike, 12 years later, that I pursued being a DJ. Thanks Dyno.
Besides money what motivates you? My motivation to do what I do has always been just the genuine love of the craft and how it makes people feel when they hear their song played or mix/blend with another song. That feeling, what we call the Wow Factor, you see and hear from the crowd is enough motivation for me.
Do you support Indie artists? If so how? I support all Indie artists who support themselves. The ones who are out there grinding, giving 110% into what they love. Putting in pure work. So when I see that I reach out to thos individuals/groups and tell them what they need to keep doing or do differently. Also, putting their music into my library and mixtapes as well. Out of all the tracks you spin what is your all time favorite track? My favorite all time track would be Yo Gotti- That's What's Up. I have never played a track that you can just killed the beat and the crowd would just finish the song acapella. That's crazy. What advice would you give an upcoming DJ? Do not. I repeat. Do not jump off that porch until you are ready. Being a DJ is a craft that should be respected like being part of a fraternity or sorority. This is a brother/sisterhood. Put in the work to know what being a DJ is all about. Last but not least, practice practice and practice. Trust, it has helped me. Respect The DJ. Besides yourself, who is your favorite DJ and why? Hands down my dude DJ Dynomike. Not because he is part of the Pure Werk DJs Coalition but for the fact that he isn't afraid to take on any DJ who wants to battle. He is a true turntablist.
What are you thoughts of the indie music scene? Let me tell you something. I have been around music longer than I have been around the DJ scene and the Indie artists here in SC, now, are much better. You can take a hot Indie record t the A and folks there would think that that person/group is from the A. We have encountered that on numerous occasions. S/O to everyone who support me and the Pure Werk DJs. You can check us out any time just visit purewerk.com Thanks for having me Krystal.

Fallon Hill
Fallon Hill (born June 8, 1981), also known as Lil’ Hill by many was born and raised in the Promised Land Community of Greenwood, S.C. Fallon’s love in making music and performing started around the age of 11. She was inspired and motivated by other performing artist of all genres and soon began writing and performing her own lyrics. In 1997 she released her first debut solo album, Big Hats. While it was obvious to her that spreading her musical message to the masses as an independent, unsigned artist would be difficult, and that that task would be made even more difficult by the fact that she was a female emcee in a male-dominated industry, she relied heavily upon the encouragement of family and friends, as well as her own steely self-determination. After several years of creating a buzz for herself, there was no stopping. In 2003 she released her second album entitled Behind the Scenes in which the single “1st Night” still holds strong in clubs throughout S.C. Since then she has performed at more than three dozen venues including the time two national well established recording artist Dem Franchize Boys and T-Pain were performing in her hometown of Greenwood, S.C. where she had the honor of being the opening act and gracing the stage, setting the crowd rocking with her rhymes. In 2005, she released her third album, Maxed Out, and this became her most personal to date. The fourth project, a mixtape titled I See Dead Presidents, was released in 2008, where the album release party sold out. Her fifth album entitled Super Sexy Swag was released in April 2011. further trying to establish her name in the rap game. She has been very busy in the studio and currently promoting her latest album Exclusive releasing the summer of 2013. this album brings a lot of energy with songs like Exclusive, Superwoman, Last Night and Ain't Yo Friend to name a few. Her fans base is a strong and always attracting new followers with her own unique southern sound.
