DESIGN WORKSHOP 2 - WHITECHAPEL
WHITE CHAPEL Whitechapel's heart is Whitechapel High Street, extending further east as Whitechapel Road. Among the other noticeable lines are the national railway line and the Bethnal green road. From the 17th century onwards the area experienced a high percentage of destitute people looking to set up small scale businesses and residences, unto the mid 19th century 52% of the area now consist of a high proportion of emigrants esp. Bangladeshi Muslims. Our group explored the role of institutions and how they transform local neighbourhoods. Whitechapel in particular is an interesting case because it is rich with its variety of institutions ranging from medical facilities, higher and primary education, and religious centres. This area is also of importance because of the new high profile developments: the extension of the Cross rail station. The major institutions on Whitechapel high street are the Royal London Hospital , the East London Mosque and the idea store along the informal market, which make up the social cultural economic and health aspects of the area. The Whitechapel street functions because of these varied institutions and their functions are in sync with the small scale local businesses.
INTRODUCTION The area of study for group 2 mainly consists of perimeters and extended peripheries of these institutions (below) which function as different social, cultural or religious institutions with little dependence on each other. Every institution has a definite perimeter, but they have a wider social perimeter with respect to time based users and local and/or working residents. The overlapping of these peripheries gives us an better understanding of the interrelation of the institutions and their scale of impact on the area as a whole.
