DESIGN WORKSHOP 2
LOWER LEA VALLEY
Design as Urban Research Workshop - Term 2 Wednesday, 15.02.2012 - Interim Review 1.Preface Slide We know existing and ancient hybrids. The cross-breeding of different types to form one entirely new is not new. (Steven Holl Linked Hybrid & Living Bridge 18th century) 2. Studying the Idea of Hybridity we came to the conclusion that it can mean more. why not landscape and or infrastructure. 3. Hybridity is not merging of genres, not mixing functions, it is creating new. 4. Try to explain found examples.
1. IKEA Intro - Basic Analysis of the urban structure Ikea is already providing prefab products for shaping the domestic environment, to fit out the bare built structure. Now, they go a step further and produce the outer shell too. The structure to put in their stuff. 1 Comparison and Superimposition of the old and the new structure. 2 Street system, same but further developped 3 the actual ikea plan as transferred through the renndering 4 the lines and its geometrical logic 5 The ikea programme, assumption of distribution and density 6 Simple Diagramm ABC and introduction of What if questions besides analysis (missed chance of linking?) example kcap streetscape formed by housing, buffer zone against street noise 2. Access and Circulation 1 Access the Sugar House Island 2 Perimeter And distributor (edge condition later on) 3 north south axes 4 west east 5 ring circulation and inner quarter circulation
3. Typology / Hierarchy in heights 4. Edge Conditions / Porosity & Grain (Urban Design) 1 Ground figure with adjacent structure, DIFFERENT URBAN GRAIN 2 Edge Conditions. how SHL connects to the Street, residential neighbourhood, park, 1. Streetscape and Porosity 2. Waterfront (hard edge and narrow path directly at the water) 3. Facade-Park-Water-Park-Facade. the canal like a mirror 3 Corners, introducing the Island with 3 different Caps: Cap North, Cap West and Cap South 1. Hotel, Setback, Square towards junctions 2. Leisure and identity (dont kill old buidlings, integrate) corner towards residentialnorth 3. Casino Square with trees towards Park
5. Elements of Design (Architecture and Public Space)
1 The Island, the Idea of embracing 2 Tackling the deep plot size. introduction of a hybrid block. rowhouses plus perimeterblock = MewRowBlock 3 twisting and setting back, creating appealing places. missing the differntiatin in heights like KCAP 4 The Grain, the Nolli Plan, Public Space and the inward residential quarter in the middle 5 Street - Chruch Street 6 Medievel old city structure 7 What if relocating the centre, what if polycentric 8 Ikea has it all, diagramm of park, residentail, water, workspace, a school, cafes around squares...
6. The Ikea Grid - the controlling factor 1. superimposition and comparison berlin london, dresden, genua Different grids with different urban typologies creating different situations. genua is intriguing because it creates a high density with detached point houses and also gets over differences in height. => 3d a simple adaption is not very useful. Naturally grown industrial fabric. Why did they overtake this structure when creating new. simple formal elements: the street system, the resulting plot pattern and then they arrange their buildings 2. manhattan grid. comparable plot size but small scale subdivision. and different density pressure and street system. 3. comparison again, street plot size ratio. Aranjuez as best comparable city (grid, building height) plotsize comparable, in aranjuez further subdivision intriguing: same streetscape, different building types, same heights, same width of street or distance from facades however. The naturally grown industrial structure. Ikea solves the problem of the narrow street system through the simple step of deletion of cars, so no ordinary infrastructure (pavement - 2 lanes - pavement) needed
7. Grid Transformations 1. back to plotsize use through perimeter block. kopenhagen 2. street system inverse. megastructure, radiant city, no cars like ikea, giant public space. no streets but green 8. Further tryouts. distribution of 200.000m² The built and the unbuilt. NEW GRID.A RIGID IMPOSITION ON THE NATURAL LANDSCAPE. 9. Conclusion: Ikea’s Plan is coherent and reasonable according to its own agenda. There are clear indications distinguishable that their intention was to create appealing public spaces, hierarchy within the fabric and a legible city. That all happens under the premises that you treat shl island as one cloistered world of its own.
But they miss the chance of linking 2 neighbourhoods by creating a third one. The premises of the LLV which are so intriguing with its obscure structures as industrial left overs, the canals which are meandering through the valley, the brownfield / greenfield situations and the Power of Ikea bring us back to a very fundamental question: What can architecture do. how do you treat the wide open field. How can the structuring power of the grid contribute to this.
the ongoing projects in the lower lea valley fundamentally fail to understand the certain atmosphere on the site. THE FOUND LANDSCAPE We can distinguish three layers: water, the green, and the infrastructure. we will navigate somewhere in between, from 1.5 to 2.5 so to speak... The freedom which is deeply grounded in the SHL site is appealing but limits are essential to freedom. (Space Reader, Corbusiers towards a new a, grid as generator)
THE VALLEY IS NOT A VALLEY BUT A LINE / A SURFACE / SOMEHOW DETTACHED FROM THE LONDON FABRIC do you see it as a line or as a layer which bends and errects or do you even cut a hole in it Obscure structures can be found all over the lea valley. The loose distribution of left overs of the once working hard industry is contributing to its particular athmosphere. This in combination with the wide open space, these brown or greenfield situations and the sourrounding residential neighbourhoods and the the idea of merging landscape and architecture is essential for our further narrating. the urban meets green. . 4. The Ikea question is also of political scale. Do we want major brands to built up their detached branded city? It is not only a question if inhabitants accept branding but also a fundamental question to our discipline and to urban planning / city planning in general.
