Welcome to

AFRICA The historic heart of adventurous exploration, Africa has been the focus of many a celebrated tale, conjuring up delicious images of the wild unknown. Today the continent, just as magnificent, has even more to offer the modern day traveller for its sheer size and diversity will appeal to all. As a travel destination Africa offers a captivating combination of culture, wildlife, wilderness and adventure. Nature lovers will have the chance to witness the greatest wildlife show on earth by viewing the mighty wildebeest migration as it crosses back and forth between the savannahs of the Serengeti in Tanzania to the acacia dotted plains of the Masai Mara in Kenya. Further highlights include drifting through the waterways of the Okavango Delta, Botswana; mountain trekking to discover gorillas in Uganda and Rwanda; watching the sunset behind the sand dunes in Namibia; exploring the colourful streets of Cape Town in South Africa or getting soaked by the spray of the Victoria Falls in Zambia. Each African country is home to a huge ethnic diversity with each tribe contributing its own distinct language, music, dance and way of life and the heart-warming culture of local people is everywhere to be seen. History enthusiasts will relish the chance to explore South Africa’s battlefields whilst listening to spine-tingling stories from the Anglo-Zulu and Anglo-Boer wars. For the more adventurous a gallop on horseback alongside gazelle, floating silently in a hot air balloon or walking through the bush and fly-camping under the stars will satisfy even the freest spirit. And for those wanting a bit of peace and quiet a thousand deserted beaches on Africa’s Indian Ocean coastline await…

AFRICA

INTRODUCTION

6

Kenya Kenya is widely regarded as the home of the safari where wide open plains and flat topped Acacia trees are weighed down by the vast endless skies. Luxury tented camps and private bush homes, inherited in the wake of the first pioneers, all contribute to conjure up a collage of images that have become synonymous with the African safari.

AFRICA

KENYA

Day 1 - 3

Fly north from Nairobi past Mt. Kenya to Meru National Park – Elsa’s Kopje

Day 4 - 6

Charter flight to the Matthews Ranges – Kitich Camp

Day 7 - 10

Scenic drive to Shaba National Reserve – Joy’s Camp

Day 10 - 14

Fly from Lewa to the Masai Mara – Elephant Pepper Camp

Steeped in tradition and fame Ernest Hemingway immortalised the safari experience (although sporting and not photographic). Later Joy Adamson was among the group of expatriates in the 1960s and 1970s whose endeavours to conserve African wildlife captured the world’s attention. The writings of Karen Blixen, and the adaptation of her classic book “Out of Africa” into a motion picture, helped establish Kenya as the great safari destination of the modern era.

One-tenth of all land in Kenya is designated as National Parks and reserves, the most famous being the Masai Mara, which annually sees the magnificent migration of more than one million wildebeest and zebra from neighbouring Tanzania. North of the equator, the Laikipia Plateau stretches from the slopes of snow-capped Mt. Kenya to the rim of the Great Rift Valley and although this area remains relatively unknown to tourists it is also the only part of Kenya in which wildlife numbers have actually increased over the past 20 years. With more mammals than anywhere else in East Africa, Laikipia is home to some of the biggest herds of elephant outside the Tsavo National Parks and is the only place to view the endangered Jackson’s Hartebeest and Kenya’s Black Rhino. It is therefore no wonder that Laikipia is slowly becoming a safari hotspot and it is renowned to be home to some of the most luxurious and exclusive safari lodges in Africa. Within Kenya’s borders you will find savannahs rich with big game, timeless cultures unchanged by the modern world, soft white coral beaches lapped by the Indian Ocean, equatorial forests and mighty snowcapped mountains, searing deserts and cool highland retreats. All offer endless opportunities for adventure, discovery and relaxation.

7

Tanzania With highlights such as Kilimanjaro, the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater and Zanzibar, Tanzania is, for many, the ultimate safari destination. For those who know where to look, untouched wilds such as the Selous and Katavi, and the enchanting Mountains of Mahale, make even the most vivid musing seem like idle daydreams.

Day 1 - 2

Fly to the Ngorongoro Crater – Ngorongoro Crater Lodge

Day 3 - 6

Fly to the Serengeti – Sabora Tented Camp or Faru Faru

Day 7 - 9

Fly to Mahale Mountains – Greystoke Camp

Day 10-12

Fly to Katavi National Park – Chada Katavi Tented Camp

Day 13-15

Fly to the Selous Game Reserve – Sand Rivers Selous

Day 16-20

Fly to Zanzibar – Mnemba Island

With National Parks and game reserves covering some 33,660 sq kms or 28% of the country, Tanzania has more land devoted to wildlife than anywhere else in the world.

The Serengeti National Park is a plain-dwellers’ stronghold, widely claimed to be one of the best places to watch game in Africa. Tanzania’s most famous attraction, Mount Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest mountain and the only free-standing mountain in the world it is possible to walk up. The lesser known Selous Game Reserve in the south is larger than Switzerland (covering one sixth of Tanzania’s land surface) and offers a boutique game viewing experience by vehicle, by boat or on foot. On the shores of Lake Tanganyika, where mountains rise from Africa’s deepest lake, discover the Mahale Mountains and Greystoke Tented Camp – a chance to experience this incredible area as a privileged castaway. Sit amongst chimpanzees as they forage and play, displaying a rich repertoire of physical touching, grooming and affection. Within striking distance of the mainland are the spice islands of Zanzibar and Pemba with a fascinating spice and slaving legacy as well as palm backed beaches offering first class snorkelling and diving.

Botswana With an area of almost 600,000 sq. kms, Botswana is virtually the same size as France or Texas. Situated in the centre of southern Africa, it is a landlocked country home to outstandingly dramatic salt pans, diamond-rich deserts and fertile flood plains teeming with game.

Day 4 - 7

Fly to the Okavango Delta – Mombo or Jao Camp

Day 8 - 11

Fly to the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans – Jack’s Camp

Day 12-15

Fly via Kasane and travel by boat and car to Livingstone, Zambia – Sindibezi Island

Over 40% of the country is given over to National Parks, reserves and private concessions and Botswana’s policy of favouring lowimpact luxury tourism ensures that even the most famous gameviewing areas rarely feel crowded. The most striking feature of the country is its incredible flatness and aridity. With the exception of the eastern part of Botswana

where the summer rainfall is slightly higher, three-quarters of Botswana is technically a desert. It is this that makes the Okavango Delta even more remarkable. The largest inland delta in the world, it is a wonderful wetland within a desert, with water arriving from rain falling in Angola, 1,000 kms away. In the North East the Chobe National Park is home to gigantic elephant herds, some 500 strong. The Linyanti Reserve is characterised by open grassland, riverine forest and mopane savannas where predators such as lion, leopard, cheetah and wild dog are regularly seen. In stark contrast to the wetlands of the Delta, the Kalahari and the Makgadikgadi salt pans offer magnificent solitude. Home to the San people, more commonly known as ‘The Bushmen of the Kalahari’, guests have the opportunity to learn about their ways, quad bike across arid pans, witness the little known migration of wildebeest and zebra when the pans fill with water in the rainy season or get up close and personal with some very friendly meerkats!

9

Namibia Straddling two great deserts, Namibia is a country of startling contrasts. The Namib (after which it is named) is the oldest desert on the planet with a sea of red sand lying along the Atlantic coastline. In the eastern interior lies the Kalahari, a vast and sparsely vegetated savannah which sprawls across the border into its neighbouring countries.

Day 1 - 2

Charter to the Namib Naukluft – Little Kulala or Wolvedans

Day 3 - 6

Commence Skeleton Coast Flying Safari

Day 7 - 9

Charter to Kunene – Serra Cafema

Day 10-12

Charter flight to Onguma Game Reserve, Eastern Etosha – Onguma Tented Camp

The many national parks and game reserves boast a huge variety of wildlife in a kaleidoscope of differing environments from the powerful landscapes of the fog swathed Skeleton Coast where the dunes roar and the wind plays sculptor, to watching giraffe ambling across the blinding white saltpans of Etosha National Park, home to some of the best game viewing in Africa. In the Namib Desert where form shifting, drifting mobile mountains lie, Gemsbok plunge headlong up impossibly steep apricot coloured

dunes, the highest in the world, at Sossusvlei. Astonishing contrasts are everywhere for the visitor to savour, enjoy and photograph. Damaraland, a huge, untamed, ruggedly beautiful region with prehistoric water courses, open plains, massive granite kopjes and deep gorges is home to the Brandberg Massif, which, in addition to being the highest peak in the country, has the allure of ancient rock art and the intriguing White Lady of Brandberg. To the west the landscape changes considerably and where endless sandy wastes incredibly sustain small, but wide-ranging, populations of desert-adapted elephant, black rhino, giraffe, ostrich and springbok. These animals have adapted their lifestyles to survive the harshness of the sun-blistered, almost waterless desert spaces. Track these desert species, explore the rugged land or sit back and enjoy the dramatic scenery. Namibia has rapidly become a well-known safari destination with a difference, famed for its remote and intimate lodges, excellent game viewing and for offering unique opportunities to interact with the indigenous Himba tribe.

Day 4 - 7

Zambia Zambia is a haven for those who want to lose themselves in the wild, offering fewer tourists, remote access and incredible experiences in terms of wildlife and natural beauty.

AFRICA

ZAMBIA

Fly to Lake Malawi via Lusaka – Pumulani

Access to many of Zambia’s areas can be challenging, with light aircraft being the Zambian equivalent of a taxi cab. However, for those in the know, Zambia is dotted with hidden oases of tented luxury that will pamper and play dangerous games with your notions of basic lifestyle needs. When it comes to wildlife, Zambia offers impressive diversity as well as large concentrations and numbers, and some of the wildest and most

remote game areas on the continent. Along the Zambezi River, which curls between Zambia and Zimbabwe on its way to the Indian Ocean, perfectly blended camps hide in the shade of Sausage Trees. Such vantage points provide an excellent getaway for slipping silently into a canoe to glide amongst the hippos and watch elephants revel in the undisguised joys of bath time. In the South Luangwa the game is so prolific that the area has been called the “crowded valley”. Its quietly whispered fame boasts of large herds of buffalo and ready sightings of the usually elusive leopard and painted dog. Beautiful oxbow lagoons and impressive fig trees complete the picture and it was here that the concept of walking safaris was first pioneered as the best way to enjoy Africa’s rich flora and fauna. While Lusaka is the country’s capital, Livingstone is better known to travellers for being just ten kilometres from the mighty Victoria Falls where the Zambezi falls away into the Zambezi Gorge. As well as witnessing this incredibly humbling natural landmark, river rafting, bungee jumping, abseiling and canoeing are all possibilities for the adventurous, qualifying Zambia as an all-round excellent and unique destination.

11

South Africa Historically, South Africa was the pariah of the world due to the infamous apartheid regime, but caught the imagination of the world with Nelson Mandela’s release from prison in 1991. Since then, it has become one of the top travel destinations in the world, blending elements of both ‘Africa of old’ with modernity.

Day 1 - 3

Cape Town – Cape Cadogan

Day 4 - 5

Drive to the Cape Winelands – La Residence

Day 6 - 9

Fly Cape Town to the Sabi Sands – Lion Sands Ivory Lodge

Day 10 - 15

Fly from Sabi Sands to Mozambique – Azura, Benguerra Island

Overshadowed by the dramatic Table Mountain and surrounded by the Atlantic, Cape Town is one of the world’s most picturesque cities. Visitors can sample fine wine under the grapes in the tranquil winelands, witness Africa’s southernmost tip at Cape Point and visit Robben Island where Mandela was imprisoned for so many years. Inland are the intriguing and moving battlefield sites that lay testament to both the Anglo-Zulu and the Anglo-Boer wars. Here too rise the Drakensberg Mountains where vultures ride on the thermals over deeply green valleys and jagged peaks.

On the one hand, one can escape to wild, remote areas and experience exceptional game viewing and true wilderness. Then, just an hour’s flight away, there are modern cities and hotels that compete with the best in the world. With eleven official languages and a diverse range of cultures and ways of life, it is no wonder that Mandela has named South Africa ‘the rainbow nation’.

To the east lies the pride of South Africa’s natural heritage, the Kruger National Park and the private Sabi Sands Game Reserve. At 2 million hectares and over 300 kms long, this enormous area encompasses a savannah landscape with 147 mammal species, over 400 bird species and numerous reptiles, amphibians and insects.

When it comes to wildlife and scenery, South Africa has a plethora of places to see, including a number of World Heritage Sites and incredible game reserves (some being malaria free for those with young children).

From desert dunes to rolling farmlands South Africa offers something to travellers of all persuasions. After all, where else can you find penguins and elephants living in the same country?

SHENTON SAFARIS Boasting a proud history of three generations of wildlife conservation in Africa, both Kaingo Camp and Mwamba Bush Camp are creations of the Shenton family. The smallest independent safari operation in South Luangwa National Park, Shenton Safaris camps are located deep within the park. This provides their fortunate clients access to the very best game viewing areas, extremely rich in wildlife, especially big cats. Kaingo Camp consists of six chalets, entirely refurbished, with stunning traditional furniture, soaring skylights, and noise-free solar power. Each chalet affords outdoor bathtubs with ensuite facilities. Private decks overlook the magnificent Luangwa waterway, offering uninterrupted views of wild game. Nestled under giant ebony trees only a few kilometres away is Mwamba Bush Camp, an intimate and authentic camp with three exclusive reed and thatch chalets. Reflecting a thoughtful balance between back-to-nature simplicity and essential comforts, the camp conveys the African spirit throughout. Each chalet includes large skylights, en-suite showers, and artisan dĂŠcor. Shenton Safaris hallmark is their ingenious network of photographic hides offering intimate observation of wildlife and birdlife. Their world-renowned Hippo and Elephant Hides are frequently manned by famous wildlife photographers and documentary filmmakers. The unique Carmine Bee-Eater Hide is another exceptional offering, set on a boat securely anchored a few metres from a colony of magnificently coloured birds, it is said to be the only one of its kind in Africa. Visits to these hides (a total of six) are part of the unique three daily game viewing activities offered by the camps, in addition to wildlife drives and walking safaris. Shenton Safaris actively supports the local community. Shentons are founding members of Project Luangwa, now overseeing many community projects such as the building of schools and sponsoring of children in need. Juliet Shenton proudly sits on their Board of Trustees, while Derek supports anti-poaching efforts within the National Park as Trustee of South Luangwa Conservation Society.

CHELI & PEACOCK Cheli & Peacock operated ‘sustainable tourism’ long before it became fashionable. For almost 27 years Cheli & Peacock has been an innovator and leader in conservation initiatives and community revenue sharing tourism projects. With the majority of Kenya's spectacular wildlife living outside National Parks on private community land, having a strong relationship with communities surrounding the parks is paramount to Kenya’s future. Over the years Cheli & Peacock business has directly contributed to the conservation of biodiversity and protection of the natural and cultural heritage of the areas operated in, as well as to the welfare of local communities by providing them with tangible and sustainable benefits from tourism through employment, capacity building, partnerships and community development projects. In 2011 Cheli & Peacock launched the Cheli & Peacock Community Trust to formalize existing and future community and conservation initiatives, with the aim of solidifying long term partnerships benefitting local communities and ensuring their support for conservation and responsible tourism in the long term.

LEWA SAFARI CAMP Lewa Safari Camp has a stunning location within its parent Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, Kenya. Outstanding game viewing highlights idyllic landscapes of Mt. Kenya and beyond. SERENGETI SAFARI CAMP Though Serengeti Park boundaries officially define the Serengeti, Tanzania, the ecosystem goes way beyond these limits and is known as the Greater Serengeti. It is a giant snapshot of wild Tanzania–masses of animals, contrasting landforms, and tribal peoples. Serengeti Safari Camp travels within the Serengeti National Park, where densities of animals are mostly higher, and the chance of seeing large predators is much greater. This 12-bed tented camp is semi-nomadic–it will move whilst guests are there–but it is actually on a wide orbit, shadowing the Migration, so guests move as close to a million wildebeest as possible.

SAYARI CAMP Located in remote and exclusive northern Serengeti, the award winning Sayari Camp is perfectly positioned to witness the greatest wildlife spectacle on the planet: the tumultuous Great Migration of wildebeest crossing the Mara River, Tanzania. Fifteen wood-floored tents with en-suite, double sink, shower and stunning bath with private view on Serengeti. After wildlife treks, enjoy infinity pool, fireplace, delicious cuisine, drinks, and impeccable service.

LAMAI SERENGETI Prime location overlooking the Serengeti, Tanzania belongs to Lamai Serengeti, tucked amongst red rocks of Kogakuria Kopje. Panoramic views of vast landscape are just a few miles from where wildebeest cross the Mara River. Between late July and October, this is where you will find the Great Migration, on its doorstep. At Lamai Serengeti there are 12 luxury rooms split into two buildings, carefully positioned for maximum wildlife exposure and minimum eco-footprint. Constructed using natural canvas, plaster, and wood poles, these original and luxuriously-equipped units provide guests with the ultimate wild Africa experience.

Do not miss ‘Kanga Under the Stars’, your opportunity to sleep outdoors under the endless Africa skies, lit solely by the stars.

ZAMBIA MOBILE SAFARIS Robin Pope and Zambia Mobile Safaris have a legendary reputation in the Africa wilderness experience of South Luangwa. Walking is the only way to really discover the secrets of the bush. Walks are led by an experienced naturalist and accompanied by an armed game scout. The Luangwa Valley, which marks the end of the Great Rift Valley, is one of the last un-spoilt wilderness areas and possibly the finest wildlife sanctuary in Africa. It covers over 3,500 square miles with meandering Luangwa River running through it. Ox bow lagoons, woodlands, and valley plains host huge concentrations of game and 450 species of birds.

KITICH CAMP Overlook a river glade from Kitich Camp, in a remote Kenya valley within lush indigenous forest. Gaze at Mathews Mountain Range rising out of the desert, a chain of peaks covered in dense dewy forest. Your camp is home to elephant, leopard, bushbuck, buffalo, ancient cycads, spectacular butterflies, Turacos and wild orchids. From Kitich Camp’s enchanted lounge, you will enjoy watching wildlife emerge from the forest at dusk. Walk along forest paths guided by Samburu, or go swimming in natural rock pools of crystal mountain streams, Kitich Camp is an authentic ‘bush camp’ and offers you a unique private wildlife experience.

NSEFU CAMP Discover Nsefu on a sweeping bend of Luangwa River, the first game camp in Zambia. Dating back to the early fifties, Nsefu Sector was recognised as a phenomenal wildlife area then, and continues to provide visitors a robust wildlife experience now. Robin Pope reopened the camp in 1999, keeping the original style. The bar, tucked in beside a huge dormant termite mound, overlooks a waterhole that is very active with wildlife, including leopard at night. The original rondavels have been extended, with a spacious bathroom added. Each room has a clear view of the river through large windows, and from the new wooden verandahh.

Taking its inspiration from the water lily, it is a delightful camp with just nine sleek en-suite safari tents combining canvas and bleached timber.
