The miracles at the Land of Books The Land of Books and its creative studio “You can Create a Book” has been going for 13 years. It is the brainchild of the Lithuanian book designer Sigutė Chlebinskaitė. While studying in Prague, Sigutė enjoyed creating books so much that she wanted to share the Land of Books mood with children and adults, by telling them that they too can create a book! Since 2001, the dedicated studio team has become an integral part of the International Vilnius Book Fair, and every February it invites visitors to become citizens of the Land of Books. This is a good opportunity over the four days of the fair to meet the best creators of picture books in Lithuania and abroad, to participate in creative workshops, to see exhibitions of new books by established, like-minded publishers and organisations from all over the world, and to celebrate the New Year in the Land of Books with its new programme. This is a unique 800-square-metre area where everyone feels as if they are in a living museum of book history. There are lots of different thematic ‘islands’ operating at the same time, where we can see, touch and experience different stages in the history of the book: wax tablets, woodblock printing, binding, marbling, old photographic printing, the secrets of restoring paper, bookbinding, calligraphy, typing braille, sign and maritime language, Morse Code, flipbooks, illustrating moving scroll books, myrioramas, picturebooks, readings... Young people who discovered the Land of Books as children come back every year to lend a hand as volunteers, and help us believe in miracles in the Land of Book. When the Vilnius Book Fair is over, the studio takes its creative ‘islands’ to different places in Lithuania and abroad. In 2011, the Land of Books team took part in Lithuania’s Guest of Honour Programme at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair in the Bolibri programme. Feel free to visit us, and become part of the miracle of the Land of Books in Lithuania!
