Background My name is Korn Kunalungkarn. I am from Bangkok,Thailand. I graduated in the year 2012 from Bangkok and recently completed my post- Master’s program from The Berlage, in Netherlands. I am currently based in delft, Netherlands. I believe architecture is always lying in between theory and practice. But at the same time it also responds and engages with real conditions. Therefore, architecture should be treated differently based upon the place and time it engages with. That allows each project to have its unique characteristics. That is why, during my education, I have always focused on experiments with various architectural approaches and did not stick to only one solution. To me, travel is one of the important key in architectural profession in order to see, learn, and experience many type of architecture around the world as much as possible. Every once a year, I always go to other country with a main objective to experience other culture and architecture for example: Japan, France, Germany, Sri lanka, Belgium, UK, and etc.

Once, the Pyramid in Egypt was intended for the dead; the Coliseum in Rome was a place for those who were fighting for their lives; the Borobudur in Indonesia was a place to worship the forever Buddha. Ironically, beside several important dates in a year (monument would actually become relevant in these occasions), it seems as if the monument, its space, its context and its purpose have become completely extraneous in our society. if the monument was no longer the remembrance of the cultural and historical heritages, but just the mere architectural artefact that apprehends built object as public space for market and commercial opportunities, ensuring economic power at the center of society. For us, the challenge lies within, how monument can restores its nostalgic identity and serves as continuous memorial ornament within the contemporary environment?
In Sao Paulo, there is a natural need of cemetery space, not simple because of the favelas or the notorious gangs, but due to the rapid growth of urban population and the short life expectancy of inhabitants. Our proposal is arranged, deliberated, segregated and regulated in order to be conveniently sustained, marketed and secured, in ways that direct to the unique cultural and social context that differ from the fundamental characclass A/B

This continuous monument delicately mirrors such potential promoting the city, community and inhabitants to distinguish and quantify the forgotten sentimental qualities, motivating the general public to an experience of the metaphysics of presence that emerges with daily life. The monument as a catalyst bridges the gap between the residents and the city, solidifying a complex and yet diverse interrelations between subjects (life) and objects (dead) that become a new heroic social proposition: gradually unifying all societal domains through a central immense entity. From individual and collective memories and experiences, wills and projections, this monument will awake all citizens to provoke, repel and prevent any contamination (social inequality, poverty and capitalist consumption) that will infiltrate our society and physical environment.

A city is considered to be a “Megacity” if its population exceeds more than ten million people. Megacities today have become a testing bed for new technologies and ambitions; however, many megacities also exhibit an ever-increasing rate of population growth, which has specific urban consequences: social class polarization, slums and poverty. In many cases, these consequences lead to high social inequality. Overpopulation also often means the municipal or state government cannot always control the urban environment; this breakdown of authority can further contribute to increasing social inequality when it cannot be controlled. Further, there does not seem to be a correlation between social inequality and the GDP or HDI; even most developed countries have serious societal and urban problems due to this social inequality. However, these problems are often exaggerated in the developing world. As one-third of the world population lives in slums of cities with tremendous population growth, ever-growing social inequality could be considered a global threat in the future. As many perceive that the presence of slums in cities portrays a systemic threat to society, many governments and authorities have developed various methodologies to address and attempt to improve slum housing conditions. However, they all failed in the end, often because the government was not able to control, or in some cases even to monitor, the effects of their intervention. It is clear that the situation is a contradiction between the top-down authority and the ability for bottom-up social groups to act. On this basis, governments have even tried to regulate illegal activities by promoting a prominent local gang boss, hoping the boss can control the slums underneath the authority’s watchful eye. Ultimately, because of this condition, among others, the slum as an urban typology seems to be organic and informal, but it is complex, highly sophisticated and formal. When the city fails to deliver to all social classes, and the social welfare state turns into a failed
state, when the settlements between the polarities reach an impasse, and when Gemmeinschaft rejects Gesellschaft – that is the moment when Gated Gangland replaces the traditional notion of community. Gated Gangland (slums, public housing and other variations) is a collective social group with common interests or pursuits, and is intended to resist outsiders and prevent any contamination from the central government. Gated Gangland, in this framework of interpretation, often reveals complete political breakdown, social disorder and coexistence between city and slum, district and community, urbanization and rural exodus, and, to a certain extent, ensures the presence of urban typological distortion and deformation. Gated Gangland is interpreted as the most essential illustration of the divergence between formal (top-down) and informal (bottom- up). As Gated Gangland often reflects low-income situations, attempts at formal development often lead to the destruction of these communities, mainly because top-down planning is generically concerned with the middle class, and prioritizes as such. On the contrary, informal development could lead to the restoration of a truly diverse metropolitan capital and reinstatement of pure communities. Perhaps the notion of community didn’t survive capitalist globalization, but Gated Gangland emerged: is Gated Gangland then, in fact, the rebirth of community? In essence, the community exhibits multiple typologies of interaction – it can be active or passive, inexorable or lenient, formal and informal – and yet is always based on a common ground, and the relationship is always reciprocal. The Gated Gangland therefore exhibits relationships that are based upon positive mutual affirmation: every relationship in the Gated Gangland involves a balance between unity and diversity. Our exploration focuses on the primacy of urban form, however, the notion of physical space and environment are not generally discussed; in fact, social, cultural and political values are prior-

itized in our study because these values often differentiate formal development from informal development. We are not interested in the spatial separation or the physical relationship between the Gated Gangland and the city per se; we are interested in the typology and order which uses social, cultural and political values as absolute points of reference for any form of Gated Gangland around the world. We are searching for an inherent order derived from an “informal, bottom up” reference. To that extent, Gated Gangland is the essence of a community, as it is jointly defined by social, cultural, political, and economic values. Within this community, our investigation differentiates urban form into two types, generic (top-down, formal community) and specific (bottom-up, informal community). The generic form is platonic, an urban form with monolithic approach, while the specific is the actual physical configuration in community which is realized in response to a particular intent and function, like the gangland. Our city in this sense is both specific and generic at the same time. Specific forms are the natural product which cannot be judged as good or bad, and do not associate with any subjective interpretation of poor or dangerous.

The challenge of creating a ‘green innovative house’ lies in finding a solution which express a true potential of the key to its term. As ‘green’ being express to the main concept as reuse,
recycle, and reduce. The most important slogan of ‘green’ itself. ‘innovative’ being express as a new/ undiscovered system which would also reflect to the first main concept of green as in construction
process/how it is arranged into the system. ‘house’ being express as Thai tradition house which provide community /joining/sharing space between each unit therefore people can interact
