• STRUCTURAL DESIGN ON GRID AND PARAMETRIC DESIGN IN OBJECTS • MANY ARCHITECTURAL ARE DESIGN ON A GRID AND LINES. BY HAVING MORE CURVILINEAR SHAPES AND PARAMETRIC FORMS IN OUR EVERYDAY BUILT ENVIRONMENTS, WE ARE REMINDED BOTH CONSCIOUSLY AND SUBCONSCIOUSLY OF OUR CONNECTION TO THE NATURAL WORLD. AND AS NEUROSCIENCE IS ALSO SHOWING, THESE CURVING SHAPES AND FORMS CAN ALLOW HUMANS TO BE LESS STRESSFUL AND TO BE LESS IN FEAR AND FIGHT OR FLIGHT MODE. THIS, IN TURN, ALLOWS A MORE COGNITIVE CAPABILITY TO RECOGNIZE AND VALUE OUR NATURAL SURROUNDINGS THAT PROVIDE US WITH LIFE. WHEN WE HAVE THESE NATURAL FORMS REMINDING US OF NATURE’S INHERENT FORMS, IT CAN ALSO PROVIDE A CONNECTION FOR US TO THE NATURAL WORLD. AND THE MORE THAT WE CAN FEEL CONNECTED TO THE NATURAL WORLD AND TO OUR OWN BODIES, THE MORE WE CAN FIND THE IMPORTANCE AND EMPATHY FOR PRESERVING AND CONSERVING NATURE.

SYMBIOSIS • SYMBIOSIS IS DEFINED AS AN INTERACTION BETWEEN TWO DIFFERENT ORGANISMS LIVING IN CLOSE PHYSICAL ASSOCIATION, USUALLY TO THE ADVANTAGE OF BOTH. • IN THE CONTEXT OF ARCHITECTURE, THIS TRANSLATES INTO A VIEW OF THE ART OF ARCHITECTURE AS AN EXPRESSION OF THE SPIRIT OF AN ERA. THAT IS, BUILDINGS THAT ARE DESIGNED TODAY SHOULD BE PART OF THE CULTURAL HERITAGE OF FUTURE GENERATIONS.

• DUE TO THE CONCEPT OF NATURE-CREATURES-ARCHITECTURE INVOLVED TO PARAMETRIC DESIGN. I DECIDED TO DEVELOP A DESIGN PROGRAM THAT CAN REPRESENT THE CONCEPT THAT WE ARE LIVING IN NATURE AND SYMBIOSIS IS THE MOST IMPACTFUL TOPIC TO MANIFEST, WHAT IS SUSTAINABILITY LIVING. • ALSO, DESIGN SOMETHING BASE ON THE NATURAL FORM ARE DIRECTLY INVOLVED TO PARAMETRIC DESIGN .

IRIYA (REDESIGN)

IN A PREVIOUS PROJECT, I HAD A PARAMETRIC SEAT DESIGN. AND THAT’S WHAT MADE ME START STUDYING ALGORITHMS USED IN ARCHITECTURAL AND PRODUCT DESIGN. • ALSO, MY DESIGN IS RELATED TO THE HUMAN SITTING POSTURE AND THE PHYSICAL BALANCE OF STRUCTURE AND DESIGN. AFTER CREATING A 1:10 SCALE MODEL, I SAW A DESIGN FLAW THAT WAS TOO COMPLEX EVEN THOUGH IT WAS A PARAMETRIC DESIGN. • SO I DESIGNED A NEW PROTOTYPE WITH A SIMPLE SHAPE. BUT A SIMPLE SHAPE. IT HAS FEATURES THAT ARE ESSENTIAL FOR PHYSICAL USE OF HUMANS. • AND ALSO EASY TO ASSEMBLE IN BOTH CONVENTIONAL CONSTRUCTION AND DIGITAL FABRICATION.

DESIGN STATEMENT

THE CONCEPT OF THIS BENCH PROJECT WAS DUE TO THE FACT THAT I TOOK INTO ACCOUNT THE DIFFERENT HUMAN POSES, SUCH AS DIFFERENT PEOPLE’S SITTING POSTURE, AND THE PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE HUMAN BEING THAT EACH PERSON HAD THEIR UNIQUE CHARACTERISTICS. SUCH AS HEIGHT AND SHAPE WHICH IS AN INITIATIVE. • WHEN WE UNDERSTANDTHE IDENTITY OF HUMAN BEINGS. SO I ADOPTED PARAMETRIC DESIGN,WHICH IS AS COMPLEX AND INCONSISTENT LIKES HUMAN BEINGS, NOT JUST SIT IN A FIXED POSTURE. • THERE ARE DISTORTION AND ASYMMETRY. BUT STILL, USE THE FUNCTION OF SITTING WHERE HUMANS CAN STILL SIT ON THEIR SEATS IN A SATISFYING POSTURE. ***THE ORIGINAL IRIYA (2020)

TIGHTROPE

THE FIRST IDEA THAT GOT ME STARTED WITH THIS PROJECT CAME FROM SEEING THE ROPES THAT CAN BE TIED TOGETHER TO FORM A STRUCTURE IF WE COULD DESIGN SOMETHING WITH A ROPE SHAPE AND BRING IT BACK TIGHT ENOUGH TO HOLD THE BUILDING. IT’S PROBABLY A STRANGE-LOOKING STRUCTURE. • IN TERMS OF DESIGN, I INTEND TO COMBINE THE STRUCTURE AND FACADE OF THE BUILDING WITHOUT HAVING TO MAKE SEPARATE FACADES BECAUSE THE CONCEPT IS A COMPLEX STRUCTURE AND CHAOTIC SHAPE. • A NAME TIGHTROPE ARE COME FROM THE SONGS NAME TIGHTROPE BY STEVIE RAY VAUGHN. I THINK IT’S A GOOD SONG.

DESIGN STATEMENT

THE FREE-FORM PLANAR SURFACE IS DESIGNED TO COVER THE FACADE TO BLOCK SUNLIGHT AND RECEIVE SUNLIGHT INSTEAD OF METAL STRUCTURES. AS METAL EXPOSED TO DIRECT SUNLIGHT MAY SHRINK, CAUSING STRUCTURAL WARPING PROBLEMS IN THE FUTURE. • THESE RENDERINGS SHOW THE SOLAR ENERGY ABSORPTION AND VENTILATION SYSTEM OF THIS BUILDING. THE PINK AREA IS THE FULLY ABSORBED SOLAR RADIATION AND THE WHITE AREA IS THE SOLAR SAFE ZONE.

*IMPORTANCE* TECHNICAL RESEARCH PART COMPUTATION-BASED APPROACHES IN DESIGN HAVE EMERGED IN THE LAST DECADES AND RAPIDLY BECAME POPULAR AMONG ARCHITECTS AND OTHER DESIGNERS. DESIGN PROFESSIONALS AND RESEARCHERS ADOPTED DIFFERENT TERMINOLOGIES TO ADDRESS THESE APPROACHES. HOWEVER, SOME TERMS ARE USED AMBIGUOUSLY AND INCONSISTENTLY, AND DIFFERENT TERMS ARE COMMONLY USED TO EXPRESS THE SAME CONCEPT. THIS PAPER DISCUSSES COMPUTATIONAL DESIGN (CD) AND PROPOSES AN IMPROVED AND SOUND TAXONOMY FOR A SET OF KEY CD TERMS, NAMELY, PARAMETRIC, GENERATIVE, AND ALGORITHMIC DESIGN, BASED ON AN EXTENSIVE LITERATURE REVIEW FROM WHICH DIFFERENT DEFINITIONS BY VARIOUS AUTHORS WERE COLLECTED, ANALYZED, AND COMPARED. THIS PROJECT CONSISTED IN THE OPTIMIZATION OF BOTH THE STRUCTURAL BEHAVIOR AND AN AD-HOC MEASURE OF THE IRREGULARITY OF AN ARC-SHAPED SPACE FRAME. TO INSTALL IRREGULARITIES IN THE SPACE FRAME,I INTRODUCED THREE ATTRACTORS THAT CAUSE A DEFORMATION IN THE SHAPE OF THE TRUSS. TO MEASURE THE GOALS FOR EACH DESIGN VARIANT, I USED THE ROBOT ANALYSIS TOOL TO COMPUTE THE MAXIMUM DISPLACEMENT OF THE STRUCTURE, AND THE SUM OF THE EUCLIDEAN DISTANCES BETWEEN THE ATTRACTORS. TO INCREASE THE INTEREST OF THIS CASE STUDY, I SET OUT TO MINIMIZE BOTH OBJECTIVES, THUS PROMOTING THE CONFLICT BETWEEN THEM: PLACING THE ATTRACTORS NEAR EACH OTHER WOULD WEAKEN THE STRUCTURE AND, THUS, INCREASE THE MAXIMUM DISPLACEMENT OF THE SPACE FRAME.
