Chanuka We are all eagerly awaiting Chanukah. After two full months of blessedly monotonous routine, we're looking forward to an eight-day Yom Tov filled with light, stories of miracles and delighted children. Chanukah is a wonderful time. The silver menorah has already been polished to a shine and a bottle of olive oil is ready and waiting. Very soon, we will recite the brachah of "She'asah nissim la'avoseinu," and sing "Al hanissim ve'al hanifla'os ve'al hateshuos ve'al hanechamos she'asisa la'avoseinu bayamim hahaeim bazman hazeh." We will repeat it over and over again, at every Shemone Esrei and every birkas hamazon, strengthening and enforcing within ourselves the belief that just as Hashem performed miracles for us and

rescued us as a nation during the times of the Nes Chanukah, He continues to do so on a continuous basis today as well. Without these miracles – how would we survive? The aroma of sizzling latkes and the dancing flames should not distract us from the additional responsibility with which we are

faced on Chanukah. How can we thank Hashem for the miracles he performed and performs on our behalf? How can we show our gratitude? Chazal give us the answer: we must try and emulate Hashem. He is merciful; so should you be. He performs acts of kindness; so should you. He brings salvation; you do the same.

Maran Hagaon Harav Steinman, shlit"a

We Can Bring Salvation! We have the power to wreak yeshuos. We, too, have received the tools to act as "delivering angels" to our fellow Jews. We, too, have the ability to help, and if we can, we should! When we contribute to Kupat Ha'ir, our money goes to desperately needy families who haven't known joy in a long time. It storms through thick walls of despair and distress, introducing relief and pleasure in their stead. If only you could see! A steady spate of tzaros has been visiting us lately. So many beautiful, respectable homes are struggling with wrenching poverty and desperately need a yeshuah – a yeshuah that we can provide! There is no zechus greater than that of rescuing a fellow

The Gedolei Hador contributing to Kupat Ha'ir at the time of Hadlakas Neiros Maran Hagaon Harav Chaim 'Kanievsky, shlit"a Jew. There is no greater, more everlasting joy. There is nothing that can compare to the wonderful feeling of knowing in your heart that you, yes you! – were the one to save a fellow Jew from suffering a nervous breakdown as the result of anguished desperation! And these wonderful zechuyos do indeed await us, on a greater scale than you can imagine. We are helping men and women, children deprived of a childhood and babies who've never known a happy day in their lives‌ poverty tears their souls asunder. If there's no money to buy baby formula, the entire family suffers a crisis. A child going hungry because there is no food is anguish of an unbearable degree. The inability to purchase eardrops or painkilling medication for a baby wailing in pain due to an ear infection is an experience from which one never recovers. Every cry stabs the heart like a sharp knife; every moan inflicts a wound. How can one endure situations like these? Dental pain that causes one to see stars and the inability to treat the problem. A child in the hospital whose mother cannot afford the trip to and from the hospital to be with him. A young adult with an emotional condition whose parents cannot afford to pay for medication, and a series of traumatic experiences that transpire as a result. An entire family going to sleep hungry for a week because the owner of the local grocery refuses to sell to them on credit any longer.

Maran Hagaon Harav Edelstein, shlit"a

All these situations exist. They are real, and they are waiting for us to serve as their yeshuah!

The Gedolei Hador Contribute to Kupat Ha'ir It wasn't Kupat Ha'ir who invented the minhag of giving tzedakah at the time of hadlakas neiros. The custom is discussed in holy sefarim and has deep roots. Besides, it is a basic Jewish feeling that when our home is suffused with light, we want all Jewish homes to be equally fortunate. We want all our brethren to shine radiantly as they behold the glorious Chanukah lights. A Jew is only happy when his brother is happy as well. The Gedolei Hador contribute as well. It is incredibly moving to witness the emotion that grips them as they prepare to light the Chanukah candles. They don't merely kindle the lights; they light them in sanctity and purity. Their faces and their homes shine with an otherworldly light. Just before performing the mitzvah that so enthuses them, they contribute to Kupat Ha'ir. They prefer to connect these two great mitzvos to each other, to precede the mitzvah of hadlakas neiros with that of tzedakah. They know the true secret of spiritual light. Contributing to Kupat Ha'ir before kindling the Chanukah lights, we know that this is precisely what we should be doing as well. After all, it is they who show us, by example, the proper way to behave.

Before we kindle our Chanukah lights, let's us contribute to Kupat Ha'ir. Like the Gedolei Hador, we, too, will adjoin the mitzvah of tzedakah to the mitzvah of kindling Chanukah lights.

You'll Never Forget This Chanukah! When your phone call comes in to Kupat Ha'ir, your contribution is entered into our computer and another envelope is sent on its way. Already during Chanukah, it arrives at the home of a family who is waiting for it desperately. Already during Chanukah, it illuminates the household and brings about a true yeshuah, acting as tangible proof of your emulation of Hashem ways – He provides salvation to the needy and so do you! Later, when you recite Al Hanissim, you'll be able to raise your eyes heavenward and feel your heart expand with joy: you had the merit of having fulfilled Hashem's will. You, too, will have the merit of having served as a delivering angel; you, too, will have banished the thick darkness of sadness and pain, replacing it with joy and light. No past Chanukah, will come close to this one. This Chanukah will stay with you for the rest of your life, and whenever you think of it, you'll experience a sense of illumination. This year, Kupat Ha'ir will be implementing something new: every contributor who contributes before Chanukah will have his name submitted to the Gedolei Hador to be prayed for on every day of Chanukah.

Maran Hagaon Harav Hillel, shlit"a

All it takes is one contribution to earn an awesome merit every day anew! After all, the blessings you receive on the eve of the third or the seventh day are not superfluous even if you've received a brachah on the first night! The days of Chanukah are not one large, eight-day bloc: every day of Chanukah has its own unique segulos, its own special madreigah. Each day has its own unique advantages and Kupat Ha'ir wants its contributors to merit them all. Even more, since the Gedolei Hador will be praying on behalf of contributors every single day, Kupat Ha'ir can provide contributors with the merit of repeated tefilos. Can one tefilah of a Gadol Hador compare to eight such tefilos? Each prayer is another rap at the Gates of Heaven! Picture the tumult in Shamayim when the Gedolei Hador, in a state of heightened spiritual rapture over the imminent mitzvah of hadlakas neiros, rap at the gates of heaven every single day for eight consecutive days, praying on your behalf every single time. Can the gates of Shamayim possibly remain closed in the face of such prayers? The key to yeshuos is in the hands of the Ribono shel Olam. No mortal being can promise or guarantee a yeshuah; only Hashem can do that. But if there's anything in this world that can be done to earn merit, to find favor in hashem's eyes – this is it: A contribution to Kupat Ha'ir, which is of the geatest forms of tzedakah and affords Hakadosh Baruch Hu great pleasure – and the prayers of the Gedolei Hador.

Little Stories

A Modern Day Korban Todah "Iiiii -maaaa! Iiiiii-maaaa!" The collective shrieks of hysteria managed to overcome even the rat-a-tat of the drill emanating from the neighboring apartment. Within a split second, the mother was in the children's room, where a horrifying scene met her eyes. She saw the babysitter leaning out onto the barred window, holding on to the baby and screaming, "She's slipping out of my grasp‌" The baby, not yet a year old, was suspended between heaven and earth, only

her head still inside. The babysitter was clutching the baby's shoulders for all she was worth, but the baby was flailing wildly, trying to get away from the babysitter's uncomfortably pressing fingers and blissfully oblivious to the three floors between her and the hard pavement. "She's slipping! Help! Help!" The babysitter's cries rent the very heavens and neighbors came rushing out of their apartments in alarm. One resourceful fellow ran downstairs and stood under the window, arms outstretched to catch the baby when she fell. Another flew up the steps, miscalculating by one flight and flinging open the door of the apartment one flight above the one where the traumatic scenario was taking place and frightening the neighbor, who knew nothing about the drama playing itself out beneath her, out of her wits. But the mother saw none of this. All she saw was her baby, suspended in the air. All she heard was the babysitter, screaming hoarsely over and over again, "she's slipping! Help! I can't hold on any more!" "Hold tight! Hold on with all your might!" The mother shoved a dresser blocking the window out of the way and gripped her daughter with a strength that only a mother whose child is in danger can display. "I'm holding her. Try to push her back inside." Impossible. The space through which the baby's narrow, flexible body had squeezed through was so small. The handle of a toy, about two inches in diameter, was wedged in the same tiny space, too. The mother freed the handle and then, with combined effort, she and the babysitter managed to lift the baby back inside. The man who had dashed into the upstairs apartment entered just in time to see the baby clutched safely in her mother's arms. In the evening, when the furor had abated, the father measured the space between the bars on the window: four inches not a millimeter more. Completely "safe" according to official standards. How could anyone dream that a human body could squeeze through a space so narrow? The baby had clambered up the dresser and moved from there to the window. The babysitter, a mature and responsible teen, had seen nothing to worry about. Who was afraid of a barred window, after all? A second later, the baby was outside.

"Her head would have slipped right through, too," the mother says, still horrified. "She has a narrow head. If the babysitter hadn't caught her at the last second, I shudder to think what might have happened." She puts a hand over her eyes, trying to block the awful image that keeps popping up in her mind. The image of her child suspended between heaven and earth and struggling valiantly to free herself from the hands clutching her. A week and a half passed. The baby, oblivious to her narrow brush with death just a few days earlier, was her usual mischievous self. The family was sitting around the Shabbos table and the baby was underfoot. Suddenly, the two-and-a-half-year-old "older sister" cried out gleefully, "Look at me! Look at me!" The mother turned around. She saw her two-year-old holding the belt of her Shabbos robe as if they were reins. She saw a towel-draped form atop a pair of familiar, beloved feet. "I have a horsie! I have a horsie!" the two-year-old exclaimed, tugging the "reins." The little feet were dragged forward. The mother screamed and tore at the towel. Underneath was the same almost-a-year-old baby, the belt around her neck as her older sister dragged her around the dining room. "What if I'd been in the kitchen, busy with the dishes? What if it had happened during the week, while I was preoccupied with the laundry?" She couldn't calm down. "I can't not take my eyes off her for a second. If it had taken an extra sixty seconds for me to see what was going on‌ If she hadn't said "Look at me!" who knows what could have happened? I'd need a thousand eyes to watch her properly!" Despite the fact that near-accidents occur rather frequently in every home blessed with a large number of children, the close proximity of these two frightening experiences with the same child was beyond what her mother could bear. "Go into Rav Chaim Kanievski and hear what he has to say," the mother begged her husband tearfully. "I don't dare go to sleep. I feel like I received two signals from Shamayim. I want to understand what they mean and do the right thing."

Maran Hagaon Harav Chaim Kanievsky, shlit"a, listened carefully to the story. "It is necessary to do teshuvah," he replied immediately. Teshuvah‌ Can anyone say for sure that he's done proper teshuvah? The mother was frantic with worry - what should her husband tell her? "What should be done in practical terms?" he ventured to ask. "It is written in the Mishna Berurah that one should bring a korban todah," Rav Chaim said slowly. "A korban todah? What, a sheep?" "Yes, a sheep." "How much does a sheep cost?" "I don't know the price of a sheep," Maran replied. "And also the forty challos todah that accompany the korban?" Maran's attendant queried in surprise. He'd never heard such unusual instructions before. A korban todah! "Yes. Add the cost of forty challos todah." "And what should be done with the money?" "It should be given to tzedakah." "Tzedakah? To whom?" "To Kupat Ha'ir." And so it was. That same night, the father calculated the value of a year-old sheep and forty challos todah and contributed the sum to Kupat Ha'ir. The family rejoiced that night. They had been signaled twice from On High and they were so, so grateful that a Gadol Hador had shown them exactly what to do. Their joy was followed by relief, a sense of security, peace of mind. A korbon todah to Kupat Ha'ir.

H y r e The V The Time Is Now The pain goes so deep… All your friends are already wheeling carriages, most with additional children holding on either side. Whenever they meet, they discuss childcare and their childrens schools while you can only discuss your younger siblings. The bachurim from the shiurim underneath yours wear sparkling white tallisos and already wrap them around their five and six-year old children while you remain in yeshivah, trying to find someone to speak to who is "only" three grades beneath you. No one in the world, you feel certain, can understand the pain you're going through. No one can fathom just how awful it is, how it eats away at you, how your single status dominates your thoughts and drains you of energy. You try to remain "fresh" and filled with vitality. You make an effort to be involved in interesting activities, to the point where your married friends envy you, but the pages of your siddur are yellowed and crumbling. You've tried every segulah you ever heard of. No one has officially informed you, but you know that people have recited Perek Shira and Shir Hashirim on your behalf for 40 consecutive days. So far, though, nothing seems to have come of it. It hurts. It h-u-r-t-s. The pain experienced by older singles and their parents is incomparable. Every rejection is like a knife to the heart. If there's a younger sibling, the parents face the agonizing decision of whether or not to begin listening for him/her or to wait.

The pain goes so deep… Chanukah is your time, and we didn't even know. "The Maharil, zy"a, used to be involved in matchmaking as a source of parnassah," we were told by one of our generation's giants, a great man whose tefillos attract people in distress from all over the world. "He gained a reputation as a great shadchan – and he used to work specifically on Chanukah, because Chanukah is a time of miracles that is especially auspicious for zivugim!" The Maharil lived some seven hundred years ago, and he knew what was best done when. His declaration at that time illuminates the way for us to this day and will continue to do so for years to come. Chanukah is an especially auspicious time for zivugim! And not only for shidduchim. The saintly Tiferes Shlomo writes that Chanukah is an auspicious time to be mashpia abundance and good parnassah for Klal Yisrael.

Tefillah Projects That was all Kupat Ha'ir needed to hear in order to begin working on a huge prayer project to be held on Chanukah especially on behalf of older singles and people in need of a blessing for good parnassah. So many of our contributors request that we pray for these two yeshuos. So many young men and women contribute from their own money and pray for a miracle. So many siblings, grandparents, parents and friends contribute on behalf of older singles that it breaks the heart to think about it. They hope, they pray… and they continue to wait.

The Days of Chanukah Are Auspicious for Shidduchim and Parnassah

Every "40-consecutive-days-at–Amukah" program brings in its wake a wave of engaged couples, but the list remains long. Many, many names are erased from the list but new ones keep joining, and yes, there are those who remain on the list from year to year, seemingly "stuck" on the same square, unable to move forward. The years pass by, each one interminably long and painful, and still they wait for a yeshuah. For them, every effort is worthwhile. For the sake of these young people, Kupat Ha'ir is willing to make any arrangements necessary. If there is anything that might help, there are no lengths to which Kupat Ha'ir would not go.

A Minyan Of Kupat Ha'ir Messengers At Kever Rochel.

The needy families, for their part, are waiting eagerly, their eyes raised heavenward. Yemei tefillah like these are an opportunity to rescue additional needy families. They make it possible for us to provide another few one-time stipends, to pay for another few super-urgent necessities that were impossible to pay for until now. Another few families can join the list of our recipients. When these families finally experience relief, perhaps midas hadin will relax its grip on a number of older singles. There is no question that the merit of tzedakah and acts of kindness certainly do help.

271 Tefillos

The Segulah of Maran Hagaon Harav A. L. It was Maran Hagaon Harav Steinman, shlit"a, who discovered the treasure hidden in the words of the midrashim on the Navi and turned the matter into a powerful segulah whose power can be harnessed to this day… some prayers are answered only after 271 times! When you learn the matter inside, from the pesukim, it's impossible not to be amazed. The widow of Ovadia Hanavi cries out to the navi regarding her two sons, whom Yehoram, son of Achav, wants to take as servants in lieu of payment for a debt her husband has inurred. She is unquestionably correct in her arguments. Ovadia took the money to support the nevi'im, Hashem's children. All she wants is money to pay the debt so she can rescue her children from the evil influences of the home of the wicked king. She asks for nothing for herself; her request is purely spiritual in nature.

A Minyan Of Kupat Ha'ir Messengers At The Kosel Hama'aravi.

She prayed 265 tefillos – and yet was not helped. How can that be? She cried out to the navi, sobbing, pleading, screaming – and the navi did not even so much as glance at her. He ignored her! How many times would you cry and plead? Ten? Twenty? Fifty? How many times? She cried out 265 times. 265 times with no response! And she went on davening and praying and beseeching with all her might. When she uttered Prayer Number 271 – she was answered! The navi turned to her and inquired what she had at home, and from the single vessel of oil she had, she merited a great miracle and received enough money to pay her debt to Yehoram and some more – enough to support herself and her children and their descendants. Had she stopped at 265 tefillos, she would have forfeited all that blessing! What do we know about the power of prayer? Do we have the "right" to stop asking after 265 prayers? Maran Hagaon Harav Aharon Leib Steinman, shlit"a, showed these midrashim to Kupat Ha'ir. "Some bakashos are answered only after 271 times," he said. " Kupat Ha'ir ought to conduct a prayer campaign with this number of tefillos…" Even if the number had no inherent power of its own, the words of the Gedolei Hador alone would create that power. How much more powerful is this segulah considering it is based upon the prayers of Eishes Ovadia that led to the great miracle she merited!

L. Steinman Shlit"a Bazeman Hazeh! Since that time, Kupat Ha'ir has been carrying out this segulah with great care. Sefer Tehillim is recited 271 times on behalf of people in need of a yeshuah, each time followed by a recitation of each name and its accompanying request. 271 times to bring about a miracle. The Tiferes Shlomo, zt"l, reveals that the incident with Eishes Ovadia occurred on Chanukah! In other words, Chanukah is an exceptionally auspicious time for this segulah. It was on Chanukah that Ovadia's widow cried out to Elisha Hanavi and it was on Chanukah that she was answered! As we are well aware, everything that has transpired in our history is imbued with the special power of occurring over and over again during later years – on the same date. The month of Av is considered a dangerous month. Adar is a month of simchah. And Chanukah is mesugal for miracles! In the words of the blessing we recite before lighting the candles: bayamim haheim bazman hazeh. The power of erstwhile times returns to us each year on Chanukah. That is the principle of a "zeman mesugal," an auspicious time. It was on Chanukah that Eishes Ovadia cried out and was answered, and it is on Chanukah that each of us can merit a miracle! To augment their strength, Kupat Ha'ir wraps all the segulos up in one package. This Chanukah, 271 tefillos will be recited at three very holy sites: Amukah, the Kosel Hama'aravi and Kever Rochel. Every day of Chanukah, a minyan will arrive at each of the three aforementioned locations and pray on behalf of contributors to Kupat Ha'ir. 271 prayers, 271 mentions of each name. 271, as per the instructions of Harav Steinman, shlit"a. 271 times during Chanukah.

271 times at the mekomos hakedoshim, considered auspicious since ancient times. In addition, the submitted names will be presented to the leaders of Kupat Ha'ir, Maran Hagaon Harav Aharon Leib Steiman, shlit"a, Maran the Nadvorna Rebbe, shlit"a, Maran Hagaon Harav Chaim Kanievsky, shlit"a, Maran the Rebbe of Chernobyl, shlit"a, and Maran the Rachmastrivka Rebbe, shlit"a. The names will be presented to them on every single day of Chanukah, to be blessed at the time of candle lighting. Contribute once – and merit incredible blessing for eight days straight! This is not just for zivugim; it's for blessing in all areas. It's impossible to describe the raw emotion, the intense fervor and concentration that characterize Hadlakas Neiros Chaukah in the homes of the Gedolei Hador, shlit"a. When you watch them, you don't need anyone to tell you that this is a true eis ratzon – it is unmistakable. You feel it in your bones.

A Tapestry of Zechuyos This time, Kupat Ha'ir is strengthening the rope of zechuyos. We're twisting all these segulos together to form a thick, indestructible rope. We're fashioning a vessel to contain all the blessings, the yeshuos, the mazel tovs, the simchos… This is one package you can't miss. Contribute once, merit zechuyos for eight days straight! 1. Merit blessings from the Gedolei Hador on each of the eight days of Chanukah, during the exalted and auspicious time of Hadlakas Neiros. 2. Merit 271 tefillos on your behalf (your personal request will be mentioned as well) on Chanukah, the time when the incident that serves as the source for this segulah actually transpired. 3. Merit having the tefillos take place at three auspicious sites: The Kosel Hama'aravi – from where the Shechinah never budges. Kever Rochel – mentioned in the Torah as a makom tefillah.

Amukah – an auspicious site for finding a suitable mate quickly. Can we even fathom the power of tefillos like these? And that's not all… A contribution to Kupat Ha'ir doesn't only "buy" you the merit of the tefillos and nothing more. The money you contribute is tzedakah money. Every cent of it goes to the most mehudar tzedakah possible, tzedakah that rescues households and individuals and enables precious Yidden, to get back on their feet. Tzedakah that illuminates people's lives. The merit of helping people desperately in need of a yeshuah is in itself powerful enough to effect miracles. All at once, on Chanukah, thousands of Jewish households will rejoice in your merit. That zechus will blast heavenward and reach the Kisei Hakavod. And when Hashem sees that you brought a yeshuah to thousands of families, won't He repay you?

All the Segulos Chanukah comes just once a year, for eight days. These eight days won't be back again for a full year. When we merit such an Auspicious time as Chanukah it would be foolish to squander this precious opportunity. Just like the number of times the tefillah is uttered has significance so does the specifice time the tefillah is uttered have significance. There is a special time for tefillos during which a special pipeline to Shamayim is opened up on its behalf. Chanukah, a time of miracles, is certainly such a time. During these eight days, Kupat Ha'ir plans to reverse

the course of nature by applying every single segulah and tefillah possible. We will beg and plead and pray as we mention the names and their accompanying requests. Kupat Ha'ir, for its part, will do its utmost. Kupat Ha'ir Rends the Very Heavens. On the one hand, there are the tefillos of the Gedolei Hador, the auspicious number of tefillos (271), and minyanim at the Kosel, Kever Rochel and Amukah. On the other, there is the incredibly powerful zechus of tzedakah on a tremendous scale. And along with all this, another lone prayer will soar heavenward – your prayer on your own behalf. Kupat Ha'ir's tefillos serve to pave a special path for your own tefillah – that of the afflicted person on his own behalf. This is your opportunity to plead with the King of kings to shower you and your loved ones with parnassah, relief from tzaros, recoveries, zivugim, children – whatever you or they need. The powerful zechuyos of your tzedakah to Kupat Ha'ir will cast aside any prosecuting angels and clear the way for your tefillah. Don't skip davening for yourself, for your tefillah has a power all the others combined do not. Together, your tefillos and their tefillos on your behalf will rise directly to Hashem, Who will then perform a miracle on your behalf. All these segulos, performed in the most perfect way possible, amidst chessed and giving. How can any existing barriers remain standing!? How can any doors remain locked!? A contribution to Kupat Ha'ir is tzedakah mehuderes, a real pleasure to Hashem.

271 tefillos – The segulah recommended by Maran Hagaon Harav Aharon Leib Steinman, shlit"a.

On Chanukah – The time of the neis; the time Hakadosh Baruch Hu responded to 271 tefillos.

At Three Holy Sites – each known to be auspicious for tefillah. The Gedolei Hador – every day during hadlakas neiros. A minyan of Kupat Ha'ir messengers at the Meorat Hamachpela..
