on Harav Chaim K anievs a g a H n a ky Shlit O f Ma r ”a , a H ' i t r , Purim 577 To Kupa 0 The Lederman shul, Bnei Brak, Purim 5770. The Megillah reading of the vasikin minyan has just concluded. The inspiring message of the Purim story is still hovering in the air as representatives from various tzedakah organizations rush over to Rav Chaim Kanievsky, shlit”a. The shul is packed with mispalelim but it is clear that most traffic is directed in Rav Chaim’s direction. Having Rav Chaim contribute his matanos l’evyonim money to your organization serves as an official recognition that your organization deals with true, evyonim. It means that Maran, shlit”a, trusts you and values what you do. Not every day is Purim, but organizations want testimony like that to use throughout the year. Kupat Ha’ir is there, too. There is no need to push. Kupat Ha’ir has received Rav Chaim’s stamp of approval in every possible way throughout the decade that has passed since its establishment. A gabbai is present should Rav Chaim decide to make his contribution via Kupat Ha’ir, but in no way is Kupat Ha’ir’s presence more

noticeable than that of any other organization. Maran, shlit”a, has not yet uttered a word. The blessing of Shehecheyanu that he recited before the reading of the Megillah includes the mitzvah of matanos l’evyonim, for which a separate blessing is not recited. The first contribution after the reading of the Megillah is the one that “makes” the mitzvah. Rav Chaim’s eyes scan the room. People jostle forward, each representing a different organization. They are all worthy causes, all work l’shem Shamayim. But Maran keeps searching. “Where is Kupat Ha’ir?” he asks briefly. The gabbai of Kupat hair, who has been standing on the side in silence, extends his pushka and draws closer. Rav Chaim’s face lights up. He places his hand in his pocket. The air is static with electricity. Maran, shlit”a, withdraws two rolled-up packages from his pocket. On one paper, in Rav Chaim’s familiar handwriting, are the words “Abba yud dalet.” On the other are the words “Ima yud dalet.” Maran glances at these carefully prepared packages. One contains his matanos l’evyonim money – two matanos to two evyonim. The other contains the money he set aside on behalf of his wife, the Rebbetzin. And he chooses to give both his matanos l’evyonim and the Rebbetzin’s to Kupat Ha’ir. The previous evening, Rav Chaim had gone through the trouble of counting out a number of bills, rolling them together and writing “Abba yud dalet” on a piece of paper. Then he’d invested time and effort to prepare another such bundle for his wife, writing “Ima yud dalet” on it. Now he wanted to give both bundles to tzedakah in order to perform the mitzvah of matanos l’evyonim in the most mehudar manner possible. And that is why he was looking for Kupat Ha’ir. All tzedakah organizations are worthy but Rav Chaim wanted Kupat Ha’ir. He wanted his contribution to Kupat Ha’ir to take place shortly after his recitation of the brachah and thus included in it. He wanted to give the bundles he’d so carefully prepared the night before – to Kupat Ha’ir. what would follow these two contributions? Tens of thousands of contributions by yiden who understand the significance of Maran, shlit”a’s public action and follow suit. Who sees him fulfilling his mitzvah in such a manner – and doesn’t fulfill the mitzvah the same way?

With Maran n Hag gaon Harav A.L. Steinman Shllit”a In today’s trying times, everyone asks for money. There’s not enough money! People are going hungry! Over and over again, we are asked to give. Hagaon Harav Avner Ruderman, shlit”a, grandson of Maran Hagaon Harav Aharon Leib Steinman, shlit”a and a Rosh Kollel at Kollel Lekach Tov in Yerushalayim, had an altogether different experience. A modest bride from a poverty-stricken family was to be married and Rav Ruderman took it upon himself to collect the necessary funds to marry her off. On the day of the wedding, those involved pored over their records and analyzed the situation. The hall, catering, photographer, and band had been paid for. A tiny apartment for the couple had been acquired somewhere on the map. The kitchen shelves were already lined with dishes, and all necessary housewares have been purchased. Amazingly, there was money left over! What should be done with the money? Should he give it to the couple? Why? Was that what contributors had intended? Should he give it to other needy people? But people had contributed specifically for this cause! What should he do?

Rav Ruderman went to ask the advice of his illustrious grandfather, Harav Steinman, shlit”a. “Try to give the money back to contributors,” Maran said. Rav Ruderman set about this unusual task with great diligence. The money began flowing back to contributors. “Did you contribute?” he asked people. “How much? Here, take your money back; may you be blessed from Above. The young couple is already happily settled and there is no need for any more money.” The extra money in the fund dwindled steadily, but there was still some left over. Some contributions had been made anonymously. No one claimed the considerable sum that remained. Concerned about the severity of dinei mamonos (halachos pertaining to money), Rav Ruderman went back to his grandfather. “What should I do now? I have no idea to whom this money belongs.” Maran pondered the question for a moment. “If you have no way of knowing to whom the money belongs to, you are halachically obligated to give the money to the best tzedakah in existence nowadays.”

Rav Steinman did not wait for his grandson to start guessing whom he was referring to. “The most mehudar tzedakah in existence nowadays is Kupat Ha’ir,” he concluded. Some things, the public hears – and some things, the members of the Gedolim’s families hear, in private. People are willing to pay plenty to know the truth about what the Gedolim really think regarding this matter, especially before Purim. If you’re going to be giving tzedakah, after all, you want to fulfill the mitzvas hayom in a enhanced manner. There you have it, a family secret from the home of Maran, shlit”a.

Witth h th he Lelo over Rebbe Zt"l He had a feeling that the taxi driver was listening a bit too intently to the cell-phone conversation he was having. As if that wasn’t bad enough, the taxi suddenly veered off the road and came to a stop on the shoulder. “I’m not driving anymore,” the driver declared. “Wh- what do you mean?” Rabbi Y. asked in shock. “I’ve been listening to you for the past few minutes, and I understand from your conversation that you’re a gabbai for Kupat Ha’ir,” the driver said. “I said to myself, 'Avraham, if, out of all the taxis out there, a gabbai from Kupat Ha’ir flagged you down – that’s a sign that the time has come to reveal the secret.’ “ “I’ve spent the last few minutes deliberating: should I tell the story or keep my silence? After all I promised the Lelover Rebbe, zt”l, that I’d keep his secret.” “Secret, The Lelover Rebbe?” “Yes. I promised him complete confidentiality, and I’ve kept my word for many years. But now that the Rebbe is no longer with us, I think it’s time for the secret to come out. You at Kupat Ha’ir deserve to hear this amazing story. “My name is Avraham Iluz. I’ve been a taxi driver for years. I live in Tzefas and I drive around from one neighborhood to another looking for riders. “You probably know that the Lelover Rebbe,

zt”l, used to spend long periods of time during the year in Tzefas. I was his steady driver whenever he wanted to travel within the confines of the city. “One morning, as I was driving him in my taxi, the Rebbe withdrew a fat wad of bills from his pocket. 'Don’t tell a soul,’ he asked, waiting for me to give my word. 'I want to appoint you my messenger.’ He handed me the wad of bills and explained: 'I received this money from a wealthy philanthropist, to distribute to tzedakah as I see fit. I spent some time thinking about which organization to give the money to, and I decided to give the entire sum to Kupat Ha’ir. I want the contribution to be completely anonymous. That’s why I’m asking you, rather than any of my chassidim, to be my messenger to contribute the money to Kupat Ha’ir. Do you agree?’ “Did I agree? What a question. I was overjoyed. I traveled to Bnei Brak, to Kupat Ha’ir’s offices. I kept shaking my head in admiration as I drove: Surely the Rebbe knew hundreds of poor people. He was familiar with numerous Torah institutions and chessed organizations… everyone came to him, after all. It would seem that there were many causes closer to him than Kupat Ha’ir. And yet, although it was top secret, he had filled me in on his true opinion. “A month passed and the Rebbe - once again in my taxi - withdrew a wad of bills and handed it to me. 'T his is for Kupat Ha’ir, okay?’ he said. The same incident

repeated itself every so often. The Rebbee o would give me money and I made sure to deliver it to Kupat Ha’ir. “I said nothing, of course. I never said a word. I received receipts in my name, and I laughed in my heart. I have become a rich man. Plain old me had merited the ultimate honor: a receipt made out to my name, the philanthropist Avraham Iluz… “This arrangement went on for years. It became a steady ritual. Every so often, the Rebbe arranged to meet me in order to give me money to deliver to Kupat Ha’ir. 'I trust them,’ he would say. 'T his is true tzedakah.’ 'I choose Kupat Ha’ir.’ 'Don’t tell a soul.’ These are the things he said to me all the time. “I was sure this story would go with me to the grave. But when today, out of the thousands of taxis on the road you ended up in mine, I decided it can’t be a coincidence. I think it’s a heavenly sign. Maybe the Rebbe, from his place in shamayim, wants everyone to know how he feels and derive a lesson.”

This is what happens when the Gedolei Hador face a moment of truth – in private, without the thought that someone will leak their actions to the public. Even when their only audience is their Father in Heaven – they choose Kupat Ha’ir. Maran Hagaon Harav Aharon Leib Steinman, shlit”a and the Lelover Rebbe, ztvk”l… What happens to us when we face Hashem during our personal, private moments? What happens to us after all the glossy advertisements that caught our eye settle into our subconscious mind, when the noise quites down and only the truth remains? What happens then? That’s what really counts. Let’s put aside for a moment the talk, the promises, the tefillos, segulos, gimmicks and revelations. Let’s concentrate on the simple truth, the heart of the entire matter. Is there any other organization that has taken upon itself to distribute nine million shekels (almost $2,500,000!) over Purim?! Is there any other organization that has taken upon itself to support each month two thousand, two and a half thousand, three thousand families who have no money to live on? We don’t just provide food packages and eyeglasses for children who need them. We don’t mean to express the slightest trace of scorn about any other organization, G-d forbid. However the most

generous food packages cost fifteen hundred shekels, chickens – two hundred, a new pair of glasses costs about a hundred shekels,. But we’re talking about two thousand five hundred or three thousand shekels to cover living expenses; to give these families the opportunity to pull through the month! There are thousands of families in Eretz Yisrael – families with five, seven or ten children – who, until a few years ago, received child allowances from the government to the tune of five thousand shekels a month. Today that figure has been reduced to just over a thousand shekels. These families simply do not have money for the basic necessities such as bread, milk, chicken for Shabbos, tuition and utilities. It just isn’t there. Supporting them every month means giving them life. Abandoning them means turning them out into the street. But the crux of the matter is that supporting them means giving them twenty five hundred shekels a month to allow them a meager existence. These are our poor, our brethren. They have no other place to turn. They have no other source of money. If they did, Kupat Ha’ir would not support them. We have a responsibility toward them. Kupat Ha’ir receives no government support. It has only me, you and us. Kupat Ha’ir is an organization of crucial importance: the gedolei hador keep on saying this over and over again, and asking the public to support it for that reason. And within ourselves, during a moment of truth, we very well understand why. If these families stop receiving their support, what would happen…? When we face ourselves, with no one around us - no propaganda whatsoever - and we think about what it is that Hashem really wants of us when we perform

y

the mitzvah of matanos l’evyonim, we think of Kupat Ha’ir. Not because of the ads and the persuasive write-ups – because of the truth. Because Kupat Ha’ir is willing to take responsibility for this mission; because Kupat Ha’ir is capable of handling it. And we haven’t yet mentioned a word about the hiddurim, that Kupat Ha’ir through great effort provides for those that contribute their matanos l’evyonim through us. All organizations have the same problem with checks made out for Purim day: when the bank closes its doors for the day, the money is unreachable. But Kupat Ha’ir, with its unique methods and through unheard-of superhuman efforts – is capable of taking a loan for this astronomical sum and thus give the money to the poor with true hiddur. Other organizations come up with various solutions as a result of necessity, and no one has any complaints - but if you’re looking for true hiddur, you’ll find it at Kupat Ha’ir. Even if you set aside the aspect of hiddur and focus solely on the mitzvah; which organization gives the truly needy of Eretz Yisrael the ability to continue living in a decent, reasonable fashion so that the family can somewhat continue to function, and so the young children of these families do not become scarred for life? Who really “holds the dike?” In a moment of truth – we both know the answer. Forget the segulos, the tefillos, the promises, the advertisements, and the letters.. Just me and the Ribono shel olam. Just you and Ribono shel olam. Where else can you find poor people that definitely, unquestionably have the status of evyonim? How else can you make sure that they will receive one hundred percent of your money in a discreet way, and that it will really help them? Let us give ourselves a good, hard look in the eye and give matanos l’evyonim through a organization that will transfer the money on our behalf to the most suitable recipients.

The President’s convoy travels quickly through the streets. Lights flash and sirens wail as sleek black limousines with curtained windows speed by smoothly. What a tumult! Everyone in the vicinity cranes their neck to get a glimpse. But no one is aware of the truth: the President is, in fact, being quietly smuggled through a side street in a perfectly ordinary-looking car. Be careful that this shouldn’t happen to you on Purim! We tend to be so busy with the honking convoys, cellophane-wrapped mishloach manos baskets, jokes, lechaims, friends, drunkards and the day’s obligations – that somehow, the loftiest, most auspicious moments of the year often slip right through our fingers.

Every year on Purim, there are people who utilize the day properly and merit salvation. Every year on Purim, Hashem opens faucets of blessing. The question is: will the faucets be aimed at you? That depends on you. You long for divine blessing and heavenly assistance, . But what can you do? It’s impossible to immerse yourself in prayer from morning to night on Purim. That isn’t what Hashem wants you to do, either. Hashem commanded us to perform certain mitzvos

on Purim and we yidden perform them with joy. Still, we would cautiously say that most of us could achieve more on Purim than we actually do. The big day is almost here. Up in heaven, opportunity is ripe on Purim. We are taught “Whoever extends his hand is given [what he needs].” A wise person plans ahead. If you know that a unique, once-a-year opportunity is coming up and you need a yeshuah – spend the time now to see how you can take maximum advantage of this unique day.

An incredibly complex system is currently being prepared for implementation at Kupat Ha’ir. Thirty holy sites have been carefully selected by the rabbanim of Kupat Ha’ir. Each site on the list is a place that was accepted as holy throughout the generations. Purim is approaching and the moving call of “Mah Sh’elasech V’yinasen Lach - What is your request and it will be granted to you” is reverberating through the air. Hakadosh Baruch Hu, our Father, wants to give us. He’s just waiting for us to ask. While you daven from the comfort of your home and perform the mitzvos of Purim, thirty great tzaddikim will come to your aid, rising from their graves and pleading on your behalf before the Heavenly Throne. Kupat Ha’ir’s messengers will travel to far-flung places especially in order to daven for you at the graves of these tzaddikim. On Purim, the gates of heaven are open wide. Tanna’im

and geonim will come to your aid. Rishonim and acharonim will pray on your behalf. Another holy site; another ancient tziyun; another kever at which it is known that one can achieve salvation. 30 holy sites on Purim 5771! We read in the Megillah “Lech Knos Es Kol Hayehudim - Go gather all the Jews”. When trouble strikes and a bad decree needs to be averted, one doesn’t make do with a little bit of hishtadlus. The Megillah reveals this tactic to us: “Go gather all the Jews!” Sometimes, only an abundance of tefillah can rend a decree. An abundance of tefillah! A prayer rising from thirty different holy sites will surely not go unanswered, especially on a day as auspicious as Purim. Special messengers will be deployed all across Eretz Yisrael and abroad. At the height of Purim day, they will cry out in prayer on behalf of the contributors who will give their matanos l’evyonim to the poor of Kupat Ha’ir. The messengers will recite each and every name individually, along with their accompanying requests. Just think how many amazing yeshuah stories you’ve heard in connection with each of the places on this incredible list. Each and every tzaddik on this list was able to change the rules of nature during his lifetime. It is about tzaddikim like these that it is written “Hashem does the will of those who fear him.” When these spiritual giants davened during their lifetimes, their prayers were always answered. “Tzaddikim are greater after their passing than during their lives.” Up in Shamayim, they have the power to overturn worlds, to shake the Kisei Hakavod, to bring about yeshuos. Why do yidden go to to kivrei tzaddikim to pray? It has been passed down through the generations that tefillah at the gravesites of tzaddikim is effective. Yaakov Avinu, our

nation’s shepherd, taught us this rule when he buried Rachel Imeinu on the road to Beis Lechem. When a yid’s name is mentioned at the grave of a tzaddik, the neshamah of that tzaddik ascends all the way to Hashem and weeps and pleads before Him to heed to the prayer of this yid. Which of us would not want all these tzaddikim to pray on his behalf? Who would not want to have the neshamos of all these tzaddikim plead on his behalf simultaneously on Purim day? All the souls of these tzaddikim praying together will undoubtedly cause a tremendous tumult up in shamayim. Think of your children. They’re so wonderful, baruch Hashem, but still, on occasion they give you cause to sigh deeply. Stop. Stop sighing. On Purim, everything can be solved. “What is your request? It will be granted.” Think of your problems. But remember; there are thousands of people whose lives changed for the better on Purim day. The uniquely powerful combination of tefillah and tzedakah stood in their good stead. It’s time for the flow of blessing to affect you as well. All you need to do is prepare the vessels to catch the flow.

The power of tefillah on Purim is well known. Childless couples have been blessed with children; older singles have met their spouses; wayward children saw the error of their ways; avenues for abundant parnassah opened up. “What is your request? It shall be granted to you.” What would you like, My children? When our Father in heaven wants to demonstrate His love for us, we can ask for anything. “And it was signed with the king’s ring” – not only in those times was the decree signed with the king’s ring. This year, too, Hakadosh Baruch Hu will be signing decrees with His ring. Every yid receives a signed check from Hashem on Purim. Some checks are ordinary while others are truly special. What kind of check will Hashem sign for you? “Write about the Jews… as you see fit…” This year on Purim, there is someone who agrees to go and daven on your behalf at all these holy sites. Can

you afford to miss this opportunity? When you know that Hashem is signing checks, you make every effort to secure the very best check possible for yourself. You can merit having the greatest leaders of the Jewish People throughout the generations pray on your behalf. At what price? Tzedakah! Is matanos l’evyonim a “price?” Who just shrugs indifferently at such a golden opportunity? You need to know when a deal is simply too good to let through. On Purim, nothing stands in the way of a cry from the heart. Hashem is ready to give to his children; just ask. Don’t let this unique opportunity pass by. That’s the deeper significance of Purim. In actuality, it’s impossible to spend all day davening even if that’s what we would ideally like to do. We can’t sit with a Tehillim during the reading of the Megillah after all, nor can we lock ourselves into a room to pray during the Purim seudah. On Purim it’s impossible to devote hours to davening. Have Kupat Ha’ir do it for you. Kupat Ha’ir invests hours and hours of work into this huge, complex project. Thirty messengers must scatter across Eretz Yisrael and various other places in the world, arriving at their destinations and praying there on Purim day. If you were to hear that your neighbor was going to be at the kever of the Ba’al Shem Tov or the Gr”a on Purim, wouldn’t you write your name down and ask him to have you in mind? A messenger from Kupat Ha’ir will be going there. Not for himself - but for the purpose of acting as a messenger for Am Yisrael and helping their prayers ascend to shamayim, with the full sense of responsibility that implies.

A great day is about to arrive and shake up the world. A great cry will ascend from thirty different holy places. “And these days shall be remembered and celebrated throughout every generation …” we read in the Megillah. The koach of the wondrous miracles that occurred then exist today as well. In such cases there is no room for deliberation. If there is even a small chance that this is the way to achieve

a yeshuah, grab it. Especially since we’re talking about the prayers of so many neshamos of great tzadddikim. Do you know what the kever of Rabbi Yonason ben Uziel looks like on Purim? w Amukah is totally silent. Purim is one of the very few days of the year that the place is virtually empty. No onee h comes on Purim. No one has time to drive there on such a busy day. True, the Tanna Yonason ben Uziel wields tremendous power up in heaven; true, we desperately want a worthy spouse, yeshuos and blessings. And which day is more suitable and auspicious to visit his kever than Purim? But it’s simply impossible. This year, a very special person will go there. He will stand there and daven on behalf of each and every name individually, mentioning every person’s request slowly and with feeling. Rabbi Yonason ben Uziel will bring that tefillah directly to Hashem and beg and plead: The time has come to open a gate wide for . . . And Hakadosh Baruch Hu will listen to the pleas of this holy tanna. Purim is the time. From this point on, things will start flowing. Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai will join Rabbi Yonason ben Uziel. Many open miracles have taken place as a result of tefillos at the kever of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai. Dead people came to life. Heavenly voices were heard at the site. Sick people were cured. Tzaros melted away. Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai will come to your aid, along with Rabbi Yehudah bar Ilai, who’s kever has a unique segulah for an abundant livelihood. Binayahu ben Yehoyada and Shmuel Hanavi. And so on and so forth – thirty kedoshei elyon. Together, they will form a choir to plead and beseech Hashem on your behalf on the greatest day of the year. It’s impossible to make light of such an opportunity. “What is your request? It will be granted.” If you don’t want to make a request – no one can force you. There will be plenty of others who will jump at the opportunity… On the day of Purim someone will be standing at the kever of the Shlah Hakadosh and reciting the entire tefilah composed by the Shlah for nachas from one’s children, having you in mind. He will read your name aloud, asking that you have an easy time bringing up your children, that they encounter no problems, that everything go smoothly. That you merit bucketfulls of nachas. You will make every effort to daven at home. You will contribute to Kupat Ha’ir and know in your heart that you have thirty great tzaddikim praying for you as well.
