The Country Mouse lived in the country in the roots of the old tree. He was very busy all day long finding food for the winter. One day his friend came to see him. His friend lived in the city. The Country Mouse was glad to see the City Mouse. “Welcome to my home,” said the Country Mouse. “You will love the county. It is so nice and quiet. I hope you can stay for a long time.”

The Country Mouse made a big supper. But the City Mouse did not like the plain food, or the thick mugs and plates. At bedtime the City Mouse did not like his little straw bed. It picked him and he sneezed. “It’s too dark and too quiet in the country,” said the City Mouse. “I can’t sleep”. So the Country Mouse gave him more candles and a hot drink.

Every morning before the sun was up the Country Mouse was busy finding food for the winter. “Come and help me, cousin,” said the Country Mouse. The City Mouse did not like to help. But the Country Mouse gave him a big push and the Owl flew away. What a fight they both had!

Late one night the City Mouse saw the family at the end of the lane getting into the car to go to town. “Come on, the Country Mouse”, he cried. “Let’s go.” They hid in the car and jumped out in the middle of the town. The Country Mouse had never heard such an awful noise or seen so many lights. “This is where I live,” said the City Mouse. How big the house was! How happy his family was to see the City Mouse with his country cousin! They welcomed the Country Mouse. They gave lovely food, fruit, cakes, biscuits, cream and chocolate. It was all too rich and sweet for the Country Mouse.

The City Mouse and his family took the Country Mouse round the house. It was all too big for poor the Country Mouse. At bedtime the Country Mouse did not like his little soft bed. The room was too bright from lights in the street. Next day they went for a picnic in the park. But the pelicans and the ducks ate their food and made them run away. A dog chased the Country Mouse under a litter basket. How they were both afraid! Back at the house, the Country Mouse was almost taken into the carpet cleaner. How unhappy he was!

He jumped into the basket just as it was being into the van.
