We at Keller Parks and Recreation are passionate about serving everyone. Yes, EVERYONE! Babies, toddlers, adolescents, teens, young adults, adults with families, adults without families, varying cultures, varying levels of physical abilities.... the list goes on. One of the demographics that we take great pride in serving are our seniors. No not 17 and 18 year olds preparing to graduate high school, more the 55 plus crowd. To many baby boomers the phrase “senior citizen” can come across as an expletive, while others can’t wait for this season of their lives. For those that do not wish to associate themselves with the title of “senior”, we get it. Seriously. That is why we have a facility dedicated to creating programs and activities that appeal to everyone. Did you know Keller even had a facility dedicated to serving seniors? Did you know you only need to be 55 to be a member, which by the way is free?! Welp, now you do! The Senior Activities Center (KSAC) for short offers over 1,600 programs annually. They travel on close to 40 day trips, a spring and fall national trip, and even implement a few trips abroad every year. We offer these programs because they offer important life benefits. Being active reduces the risk of depression, global cognitive decline, and enhances social connectedness. AARP recently published an article that discusses the risks associated with isolation. Did you know that isolating yourself has the same effect as smoking 15 cigarettes a day? * More than 8 million adults aged 50 and older are affected daily by isolation. Isolation has been shown to correlate with higher percentages of breast cancer, high blood pressure, heart disease, and an array of other chronic diseases. People who are isolated are more likely to be depressed, have dementia, and make more frequent trips to the ER. They also are at a greater risk of being the victim of elder abuse. This is where we come in. The staff at the KSAC have worked diligently to achieve a well rounded line up of offerings that range from passive to active. Health and wellness courses that include Tai Chi, strength training, Gentle Yoga, and Zumba Gold. Enjoy a nutritious meal through our partnership with Metroport Meals on Wheels. Learn something new with our GoldenTech training a multigenerational course developed to assist with learning todays current tech gadgets, or learn something more historical through our Genealogy and Writing Your Life courses. Play a card game, participate in an art program, or just socialize with new friends. You can even get a little snazzy at our Mystery Dinner Theater, check out local museums, or take a mystery trip when your feeling a tad adventorous. Don’t see an offering that interests you? Let us know! We are always excited to implement something new. For a complete list of our current programs check out pages 28-39 of this brochure. Interested in a program, but want a bit more information give us a call at 817-743-4370, or even better stop by the center! We are located at 660 Johnson Road (Next door to the library). * Schniedewind, Eric J. "Fight Isolation with Kindness and Tech." AARP (n.d.): 83. Web. 6 Mar. 2017.
