FROM THE DIRECTOR’S CHAIR
I hope you had a wonderful holiday season and your New Year is off to a great start! For the City of Keller Parks and Recreation Department, quite a bit has happened since we last spoke. We have completed two trail projects, one near Johnson Road and Bourland Road, and the other at Rufe Snow Drive and Shady Grove Road. These two projects filled small gaps in our trail system and made for a safer crossing at Rufe Snow Drive. We also just applied for two grants totaling close to one million dollars to further expand our trail system. One is for a 4,200 linear foot trail along Whitley Road and Rapp Road. The other is for the future Overton Ridge Park trail system. Both of these projects are on our Hike and Bike Trail Ultimate Network. We will find out later this year if our applications were accepted for either.
Speaking of Overton Ridge Park, the Parks and Recreation Board had public input meetings for that park and Milestone Park. The concept plans were approved and lots of good comments were received from our residents. We have construction estimates for both park projects, and the next step will be to identify funding to complete construction. The Parks and Recreation Board will also be reviewing the latest concept plan for the Keller Sports Park in March. The next step for this project will be a public input meeting to obtain feedback from our residents and park users. Once the concept plan and estimated construction costs are complete for the Keller Sports Park, the Parks and Recreation Board will recommend the order of completion and funding sources for each project to City Council for their approval later this spring. Last, but certainly not least, recently our City Council unanimously approved funding for a Senior Center Needs Study. This will allow staff and our Senior Center patrons to begin the discussions on the future needs of the Senior Activities Center. With the help of an architectural firm, this project will determine the optimal size, programming options and amenities for our Senior Center. Our current Senior Center is in a 2,400 square foot facility, and we have over 800 active members, so the current size is not large enough for our current needs. This project should take approximately four months and then the Parks and Recreation Board can make a recommendation to City Council about the next steps. If you have comments and suggestions for any of the above projects, please come to our monthly Parks and Recreation Board Meetings on the second Thursday of each
month, at 6:00 pm in Keller Town Hall. We would love to hear from you. Until next time,
Cody Maberry Director of Community Services
