[New] TV LEGEND

February is Black History Month. In 1926, Harvard-trained historian Carter G. Woodson and members of his Association for the Study of Negro Life and History organized Negro History Week hoping to raise awareness of Black contributions to history and culture. Over time, Negro History Week became increasingly popular. American cities started their own celebrations, Black history clubs were formed and teachers demanded resources for their classrooms. Fifty years later, in 1976, the week expanded to Black History Month (sometimes called African American History Month).

At KQED, one of the ways we honor and celebrate Black History Month is by curating documentaries, series and shows related to it. In the listings, which begin on page 8, you’ll see Black History Shows highlighted in orange. Here’s a selection of what you’ll see on KQED Public Television or by streaming on KQED Passport or the KQED Video App.
