PGA SA goes international
As an International member of the PGAs of Europe, the PGA of SA was invited to be on of the 30 nations at PGAs of E’s 32nd Annual Congress.
C
EO Ivano Ficalbi attended the seminars while the team of Mike Michell (Clovelly), Rudy Whitfield (Glendower)and Morne Botha (Woodhill) represented SA in the International Teams Championship.
The congress took place at the Hotel Vila Gale Lagos in Portugal’s Algarve region and featured numerous presentations and workshops guided by the themes of leadership of associations and their members, together with a focus towards strategic planning, ensuring associations are planning for the future and can lead their organizations and professionals toward it. PGA SA’s Morne Botha had the honour of presenting at the conference. His digital magazine, Corporate Golf Magazine, is a ground-breaking concept and the PGA of Europe feels it is worthy of the attention of PGAs worldwide. The Teams Championship was played at the Onyria Palmares Golf Club between 27 international teams. The format was individual medal over 3 rounds with the best two scores out of three counting each day. Team PGA SA finished a very creditable 8th. Team members were blown away by how much time some of their colleagues from other countries spend playing tournaments. Mike Michell finished 2nd out of 90 individuals 1 shot off the pace of the leading pair. Golf Trader asked him about the tournament and he said the weather was very good - 18 or 19 degrees every day and the course was tough – the toughest he has played in over the 5 years that he has represented SA. It had very slopey greens with run off areas but he was fortunate to hit his irons very well. Team SA played with the Irish and Spanish and did a shirt swop with the Irish in the pub afterwards with the Irish sporting a Ping shirt with the PGA SA logo and SA were sartorially elegant in the official PGAs of E sponsors Glenmuir apparel.

Zack Rasego - Master Caddie South African caddie, Zack Rasego, who was named as the European Tour’s 2012 HSBC Caddie of the Year in November.
Tournament golf is not usually thought of as a team game, but ask any of golf ’s greatest champions and they will tell you that their caddies are as important as any club in the bag. In golfing terms, the old adage “Behind every great man is a great woman” would read: “Behind every great golfer, there is a great caddie”. In the case of four-time European Tour winner Branden Grace, his rise to stardom throughout 2012 has certainly been underpinned by the constant presence of his experienced and talented caddie, Zack Rasego. But, although Grace and Rasego are one of the most recognisable pairs on television today, it was South Africa¹s Grand Slam champion Gary Player who first recognised Rasego’s potential in 1979 when the North West Province native was just a lad of 16. Whilst he was involved in creating the internationally renowned Sun City, Player introduced a caddie programme, through which Rasego rose to be Caddie of the Year in 1980. Zack was a quick learner and someone who had a great eye for the job, said Player. Linked to the prize was the opportunity to caddie for Player in Europe. It would be his first trip abroad, but following two weeks on the South African legend¹s bag, Rasego¹s career was decided. After a few years in South Africa, he ventured back to Europe where he spent most of his career since. 8
Among the players Rasego served was a seven year stint with current world number five, Louis Oosthuizen. The highlight of their partnership was their outstanding seven-shot victory at the 2010 Open Championship at St Andrews. Appropriately, the final day of that triumph was actually the first ever Nelson Mandela Day on 18 July 2010 and Oosthuizen dedicated his victory to the former President, calling it “a truly South African win for a truly great South African”. When Oosthuizen and Rasego parted ways in 2011, this opened the door for Grace to acquire the services of Rasego for the European Tour Qualifying School. After a successful campaign, the pair continued to make a stupendous impact on the golfing world with back-to-back victories in the Joburg Open and Volvo Golf Champions, followed by more success in the Volvo China Open and the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. And they have even found time for a quick trip back to Fancourt to capture the Vodacom Origins of Golf Final title on the Sunshine Tour. In November last year, Rasego was named the 2012 HSBC Caddie of the Year. After receiving the trophy during a prestigious awards ceremony, Rasego spoke about what this recognition from the players, caddies and media meant to him. That victory really gave him the self-confidence to believe he is a winner..

Golfers prefer half-board hotels to all-inclusive packages, new survey reveals Golfers prefer the flexibility of half-board hotel packages to all-inclusive deals, new research for International Golf Travel Market (IGTM) reveals.
The survey, commissioned by Reed Travel Exhibitions, organisers of IGTM Algarve, Portugal, is based on responses from more than 9,500 regular golfers in Europe’s four largest golf markets – UK & Ireland (UK&I), Scandinavia, Germany and France. The research found that half-board accommodation was the number one choice for golfers from Germany (35.5%), Scandinavia (32.9%) and UK&I (28.3%). However, French golfers said they preferred all-inclusive deals (27.7%), the second choice of golfers in the other three markets. The research, produced by SPORTS MARKETING SURVEYS INC., highlighted other variations in consumer behaviour. German golfers are the most likely to stay in fivestar accommodation (36.5%), followed by French golfers (24%), British and Irish (22.8%) and Scandinavians (18.4%). However, German golfers are the least likely to stay in on-course hotels (25.8%), although they do stay closest to the course – 13 minutes’ drive, on average. Scandinavian golfers tend to stay on-course wher10
ever possible (45.9%), compared to 33.9% of British and Irish golfers and just 27% of French golfers. Hotels remain the most popular form of accommodation for golf travellers (Germans 76.5%, Scandinavians 64.8%, French 64.4% and UK&I 55%). However, British and Irish golfers were the happiest to stay in ‘bed-and-breakfast’ style accommodation with 14.7% reporting this option for their most recent golf break, compared to 6.4% of French golfers, 4.2% of German golfers and 3.7% of Scandinavians. IGTM Exhibition Manager, Peter Grimster, said: “While it is interesting that we have seen a rise in all-inclusive golf packages, especially in destinations such as Belek, Turkey, half-board hotel packages remain prevalent in Europe. “Destinations and hotels should take note of different customers’ wants and needs. While it is well documented that golf tourists spend more on average than typical leisure tourists, a variety of accommodation and price points are required depending on which regional markets a destination is targeting.”

Close your gap to success through the
perfect routine! Paul Cuningham PGA Qualified Teaching Professional at Eagle Canyon
The number of disciplined routines you can engage in a round of golf will reveal your ultimate scoring potential. Create one perfect routine at a time and just enjoy the walk in-between. Here are your steps towards success, work on them.
Assess your shot. As you approach each unique situation on the course, start tuning in your senses about 15 meters from the ball and start bringing together all the elements that will affect your shot. Get clarity towards your ultimate outcome. There are controllable entities in this phase, like you and how you carry yourself through this phase of information gathering. What aspects of information do you gather for your shot? What’s your decision pose like? Do you stand with authority; are you calm, objective and decisive in your decision making? Showtime! When you’ve made up your mind and got the picture clearly in your head of what you’re going to do, then you need a start key for the rest of your sequence to follow. Some people like a verbal key: Ready, I’m good to go or Game-on! Some like physical keys like looking at a green dot on their glove (green light for go), closing the Velcro of their glove or just simply pulling the club from the bag. Find your start key, one that triggers your process, works for you and becomes natural to you.
Repair yourself! Consider yourself broken before you play each shot. Whether you’ve just walked off the previous green having made a hole-in-one, or you’re standing on the first tee off an important tournament, or even faced with a technical issue in your game which you need to overcome; get centred, release any physical tension and be positive about your choice and ability to execute the shot. This is a controllable

phase, make sure you’re in the right state before you can tune into your shot, positively and tension free. Focusing on your breathing will help you in this phase. It’s physically impossible to be nervous and concentrate on your breathing at the same time.
Prepare: Once you are receptive enough to program your swing, tune into the shot you can rely on, the effective one you and your coach have been working on, or the creative flare that you are. Your ability to really feel the shot is still a controllable entity and should not be overlooked. It takes 8 seconds to only lose about 70 % of your programming and so that feeling will still be fresh in your system and ready for the execution phase.
Let it go: Jack Nicklaus said setting up to the ball correctly is singularly the most important aspect to hitting your best shot. From here, most coaches are hell bent on refining their student’s swings towards a point of perfection and ultimately lead them to a point of self-destruction. Most youngsters cannot cope with the weekly change of never ending change and a constant concept of failure. They only see success by what they see on the video camera and unfortunately most academy jockey’s carry on their technical information through this execution phase. Once you’ve set-up to your shot, SURRENDER any doubt or technicalities. You have done everything you possibly could up until this moment to give yourself the best chance of success, don’t mess it up now by trying too hard to hit the perfect shot, tightening up and losing muscle co-ordination. Let the programming you’ve just made reveal itself, let your body remain free of tension and let it express itself as a true reflection of you. We are not totally in control of the outcome in this phase, so just let it be, just let it go. Closure! Acceptance is the closure to a perfect routine. Once you’ve struck the ball, hold the finish, watch the outcome and take feedback out of the shot that may help you with others later in the round. We can normally accept the result if we’ve been disciplined enough to have done the best we could in the previous steps of the routine. Put your club back in the bag just as relaxed as you took it out, take off your glove (red light - stop) or say something like, Game-off to create closure to the routine. Once you are done then truly just let it be, let it go and just enjoy your walk. This is a controllable entity and it’s vital to the success of the next perfect routine that you arrive there in a receptive state. Now let’s play the circles game rather then play for score. Score focus just gets in the way of potential. Let’s rehearse on the range and execute on the course perfect, seamless routines, meaning that there’s no opening for negativity to slot in-between any of the sequences. If we can achieve that shot for shot until the hole is completed, then give yourself one circle. If you can do this for 18 holes, achieving 18 circles on your card, then you would have attained 18 holes of perfection that would reflect you and your game in its holistic form – If there are any areas of weakness then those will present themselves in your outcome and if you repair these areas of your game off the course then your true potential can be revealed.

Dit is vir my nogsteeds ’n dwelm en ek oefen nou harder as ooit, maar aai die ouderdom haal my in en ek dink dit is nou tyd vir die seniors een van dae en ek gaan al my jare se ondervinding terug sit in die spel, om lesse aan te bied op ’n hoër vlak en spelers te bestuur – twee passies van my. Struggling with your Traps? The Upper Trapezius, Neck and Head By: Jan Fourie (Biokineticist) and Roger Wessels (Head Coach) Good shoulder movement in a golf swing requires the neck and shoulders to have decent functionality which is created by good alignment and strong stabilizer muscles in the Scapulae (Shoulder Blades). The shoulders will then rotate correctly around the spine allowing the arms to work correctly to deliver the club along the desired swing path.

Overactive Upper Traps prevent the arms from swinging freely and weak stabilizers in the shoulder blades are a major cause of that dreaded “Over the Top” motion which is very difficult to correct without addressing the physical stability issues first. Short and skew does not make for an enjoyable game of golf and if you have the “Over the Top” motion then perhaps understanding the causes from a physical perspective and how to address the issue will get you back on the short grass and back into play. The Upper Trapezius muscle and other muscles of the neck, like the Levator Scapulae and Sternocleidomastoid, often suffer from tension and spasm because of poor posture and body mechanics. These superficial muscles are designed to produce movement and when the deep stabilizer muscles of the spine and shoulder blades are weak then the superficial muscles of the neck suffer the consequences which has a direct effect on a golfers ability to move efficiently and correctly.

In viewing body posture and alignment from the front and back the neck and head should be in the middle with a symmetrical appearance of the shoulders on both sides. An elevated shoulder on one side can indicate an over-active Upper Trapezius or Levator Scapulae muscle on that side. This can either be
the result of a habit such as holding a phone up against the ear by the shoulder, or carrying a heavy bag over one shoulder. It can also be a compensatory action from the Upper Trapezius muscle to counter for a weakness lower down in the body, like the hip. The neck is the ultimate extension of the spine, and if there’s an abnormality in the spinal curvature lower down (Lumbar or Thoracic area), it is almost a certainty that the neck and head will be out of position. So many people I assess struggle with a neck and head that has moved forward - quite often due to modern living - causing tension in the neck and poor movement of the shoulder girdle. Treatment of tension in the neck should therefore not be limited to massages and manipulations. One has to strengthen the deep muscles that stabilize the spine in its natural curvature. This starts with a stable pelvis, Lumbar spine, Thoracic spine, and ultimately a relaxed Cervical spine (neck) that will allow you to keep the head in position. This will improve your balance, visual perception and function of the shoulders in the golf swing. Speak with your Biokineticist to help you strengthen muscles like the Low Trapezius, Serratus Anterior, Multifidus and Internal Oblique. Slow, Slow, So So Slow A survey has recently been conducted into slow play in Europe analysing round data from over 6,000 rounds and surveying over 900 golfers from a range of golfing backgrounds including professional, club and non-club golfers. The results raise an issue for golf course operators and owners to tackle with the vast majority of golfers taking longer than they would like to complete a round of golf. • 59% take longer than 4 hours to complete a weekend round • 90% of golfers want to complete a round in less than 4 hours • Over 20% of golfers suggest slow play would deter them from playing • Only 25% of rounds played took 3 ½ hours or less • 63% of surveyed golfers played golf at least once a week in the peak season • 982 golfers surveyed and analysis of 6801 rounds of golf 22

Uluru course in planning stages A new golf course near the World Heritage Site of Uluru (Ayers Rock) in central Australia is reaching the end of the planning stage. The Ayers Rock Resort, owned by the Australian government-backed Indigenous Land Corporation, is behind the proposed course, which would be built on a site around 10km from Uluru itself and which, the developers say, would not be visible from the rock. The Indigenous Land Corporation acquired the resort through its subsidiary Voyages Indigenous Tourism, and is investing heavily in the property to encourage visitors, many of whom pass through the area quickly, to stay longer. The golf course is seen as a key part of that strategy. Hydrological and environmental management plans have been lodged with the Federal Environment Department. Voyages managing director Koos Klein told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation that the use of recycled water to irrigate the course would mean that only a small amount of water would need to be extracted from the underground aquifers that serve the area, and that hydrology studies show this would be sustainable. He also said that the local Aboriginal tribes had been fully consulted about the proposal, and that the site had been authorised by the Aboriginal Areas Protection Authority after a sacred sites survey. The local Anangu people regard Uluru as sacred. The nearest golf course is at Alice Springs, around 300km away, and was designed in the 1980s by Thomson Wolveridge and Perrett. 24

Branden seals Order of Merit victory His share of 12th place in the Alfred Dunhill Championship secured Branden Grace top spot on the 2012 Sunshine Tour Order of Merit to crown an extraordinary year. While he stumbled somewhat in his final round of the season – he carded a two-over-par 74, after climbing into second spot at 12-under-par behind the runaway winner Charl Schwartzel – such was the importance of his victory in the Joburg Open in January and of his Vodacom Origins of Golf Final win in September at The Links Fancourt that his topping the money list was assured. “The Order of Merit is very important. Every guy that plays golf out here on the Sunshine Tour wants his name on the trophy at the end of the season,” said Grace. Beside his two victories on the Sunshine Tour, Grace exploded onto the world stage with three more victories on the European Tour – the Volvo Champions, the Volvo China Open and the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. “I’m very chuffed. Winning the Order of Merit is all I wanted to do this year,” he said. “A bit of disappointment with the finish, but I still played well. A couple of bounces didn’t go my way around the edges at Leopard Creek, but it’s been a great finish to an awesome season.” It’s almost difficult to comprehend how rapidly Grace rose to prominence: The story of how he lost his European Tour card last year, and regained it through the Qualifying School is well known, but perhaps the story is more dramatically told through the Official World Golf Rankings. He started the year in 271st position, and finished it in 34th – assured of an invitation to the Masters and a fixture in the golfing elite of the world. “Reflection will come now. I’ve sat back a little bit and thought about what I’ve done, but not everything has sunk in yet,” he said. “Hopefully 2013 can be remotely as good as this was.” 26

Shiny new ride for Keith after double hole in one When Keith Horne stood on the 12th tee box and reached for the eight-iron he used to make a hole-in-one at that par three the day before, he couldn’t have hoped to repeat the achievement, but moments later he celebrated the unthinkable. “Unbelievable. It was the same club, but the wind was different, so I had to hit a full eight-iron this time. It was in all the way – never looked like missing. Went in a bit faster this time, so I didn’t get to admire it as much as yesterday, but it really got the adrenaline going much more,” he said.
Alongside the green at the 12th, which plays 176 metres from the tips, there was a BMW display showcasing the prize for a hole-in-one on the final day – a BMW 6-series Gran Coupe. Not long after Horne’s second hole in one Johann Rupert, Chairman of Richemont, the holding company for Alfred Dunhill, decided that the unique achievement merited a unique reward. He teamed up with BMW and at 15h45 on the Saturday, Horne received the keys to his sparkling new BMW 5-series active hybrid. “I’m really chuffed! It was very kind of them to recognize that two hole in ones were worthy of giving me the car. I wasn’t expecting it, so I’m over the moon. This was an unbelievable Christmas present and I couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful car,” said Horne.

First step in ambitious London plan Developer Tony Menai Davis, the owner of the Shire club in north London, has opened the West London Golf Centre, a new practice facility and the first step in an ambitious series of golf developments in the area. The centre, which includes an academy run by Sky Sports golf coach Scott Cranfield, and an American Golf superstore, will be joined next year by a nine hole golf course. A further eighteen holes, located on a nearby site just across the A4180, are planned for a 2016 opening.
“The adjacent West London Links will be an even bigger attraction for this area, when it opens in 2016, and beyond that we will soon reveal plans for at least one other extraordinary new golf course in the north London area, to be opened before the decade is out.”
Menai Davis said: “West London Golf Centre is another piece in the jigsaw. We’ve been planning to develop the old Lime Trees site for a number of years, and it all came together in 2012. Our aim is to provide the finest golf practice facility in west London, and I think people will also love what we’ve done with the accompanying nine hole course when it opens next year.
Menai Davis said the north London course, which is believed to be located on a site near the intersection of the M1 and A41 in Edgware, would be the first UK course for a worldrenowned golf architect. He added the family intended to file a planning application for the project before the end of the year. The developments are all believed to be inert landfill-based projects.

Point High Cricket Festival – which attracted twenty six under-19 teams last year, and is now recognised as the biggest cricket tournament in Africa.” Ms. Holm said that the golfing diaries for the festivals hadn’t been announced at the time of going to press, but that both of the local championship courses – Mossel Bay and Pinnacle Point – took part in the Dias and Sports Festivals last year. “The full programmes for all the festivals will be posted to www.visitmosselbay.co.za when they become available, and it’s also worth watching our on-line calendar for all the latest information about what’s going on in Mossel Bay,” she said. “And if you sell your family on all the stuff they can do while they’re here, we’re pretty sure they’ll forgive you when you slip off for a few hours of the finest golf you’ll find.”

PGA Launch Academy at Mission Hills The PGA has established a branded golf academy at China’s world famous Mission Hills Golf Resort. PGA Chief Executive Sandy Jones officially opened the PGA Golf Academy at Mission Hills, Dongguan. The agreement with Mission Hills reflects the PGA’s strategy to grow its brand in the growing Asian golf market and will further enhance the status of the increasing numbers of PGA members employed in the region. With China the fastest growing nation in the world, where it is reported that 20 million golfers are set to be playing the game in 20 years, increasing opportunities are expected to open up for PGA professionals whose skill and expertise will be in wide demand.

GOLFING IN PARADISE Head off to the South Coast for some fine beaches and a great game of golf at one of South Africa’s most sought-after golf estate resorts.

then fumigating and finally planting. We got on our knees and prayed for sun like a farmer prays for rain because the grass we planted is a warm season variety and only grows when the temperatures are warm,” explains the knowledgeable designer. Fortunately, his prays were answered and the golf course is looking spectacular. “This has been a very exciting project for me as our company was contracted to maintain the entire course until the end of January 2013, which meant that, besides the greens, we could improve on the playing surfaces of the tees, fairways and the rough. It has been a wonderful opportunity to take care of the whole course,” he remarks. “We allocated a portion of the budget to blend in the green surrounds which has allowed us to get a much more natural and soft look on the green complexes,” Now, with the upgraded golf course and many other activities available at the luxurious San Lameer Estate, visitors are likely to have an unforgettable vacation. A well kept secret! Whilst on our travels down the South coast of KZN we needed some accommodation in the Pennington area. Rynardt Crous from Umdoni Park Golf Club advertises this wonderful Golf Course with us and we noticed in the ad that he had some accommodation packages available there. But where? We knew that Botha House was on the property but had never seen other accommodation of any nature. I phoned Rynardt and he booked us into the Trust cottage for the night. Well no wonder that we had not seen the Trust cottage before as it is hidden away in the middle of the golf course. There is the cottage which has everything that you could want and the Annex which is an outbuilding with only beds, there are however some great outdoor showers with hot water. 38

We stayed in the cottage, which is really a large house which like I said has everything. A fully equipped kitchen, huge bathrooms with a bath & a shower, lounge with a selection of books to read, a large dining room, your linen, braai facilities etc. The only thing that was not there was a TV and if you are like me then this is actually a plus factor! There is a sea view from the front stoep and a large garden. You have an absolute sense of privacy here and it is hard to believe that you are actually in the middle of a golf course. This is really the best kept secret (or was until now) in terms of on-course accommodation on the KZN south coast as it is an ideal base for golfers wishing to play Umdoni Park and the other magnificent courses that are nearby. De Jonge honored in Zimbabwe Brendon de Jonge took home Sportsperson of the Year and Sportsman of the Year honors in his native Zimbabwe last month. The 32-year-old native of Harare who now lives in Charlotte, N.C., edged out swimmer Kirsty Coventry and distance runner Cutbert Nyasango, among others, for the awards. De Jonge enjoyed his best season on the PGA TOUR this year, finishing 41st in the FedExCup standings and earning more than $2 million after four top 10s, including a runner-up at the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, where he also shot his career-best score, a 62 in the opening round. He also tied for fourth at The McGladrey Classic and the CIMB Classic and climbed to 81st in the Official World Golf Ranking. De Jonge is the latest golfer from the small African nation to find success on TOUR with Hall-ofFamer Nick Price being its most prominent, along with Mark McNulty and Tony Johnstone. 52

Peter Dawson says too much Old Course hysteria R&A chief executive Peter Dawson says there is too much hysteria surrounding planned changes to the Old Course, and has called for balance and perspective from the golfing world. Speaking about the changes, Dawson claims alterations in preparation for the 2015 Open Championship will stay true to the Old Course’s original design. “There’s a huge amount of comment out there on social media,” Dawson said. “Most of it is ill-informed and we need some balance and perspective. I know there are lots of people who think the Old Course has never been touched, should never be touched, that it’s a shrine,” Dawson said. “The history of that is simply not factual. “The course has developed at various rates in its history. It’s simply not true to say the course has stood still. Most of the stuff we are doing now falls into a very slight category. 54
“It’s completely illogical to think a course built so long ago can stay the same. What you have to do absolutely as a top priority is preserve what the course is all about and what its essential strategy is. There are no two bodies like the R&A and Links Trust that love and cherish the Old Course more.” A recent poll of by the European Institute of Golf Course Architects shows support for Dawson. In a poll of 112 members across 25 countries, 72.15 percent of those who responded felt changes to the Old Course might be appropriate. A majority of members agreed with the statement that renovations could be carried out but only if they were “based on thorough historic research.” Exactly 58.2 percent voted for this option.

“The results of our poll clearly show that, while many of our members agree that it ought to be possible to carry out alterations to the Old Course, a significant majority believe that such changes should only be allowed if they reflect the historic strategy of the course,” EIGCA president Rainer Preissmann said.
“The local reaction generally has been very supportive. The local reaction was fine, at least at club level. But you will always find people at St. Andrews who say nothing should ever change, that the course is perfect the way it is. I quite understand that. “In making our recommendations, we tried to be as sympathetic to the Old Course and average players as humanly possible. Martin Hawtree has been very sympathetic to the traditions of the Old. It’s still going to be the Old Course, not a Hawtree course.
Dawson said the changes came about after the R&A’s championship committee suggested alterations in advance of the 2015 Open Championship. “The Championship Committee of the R&A went to the Links Trust with some suggestions. The Links Trust and the Links Management Committee agreed to some of them and not others. We agreed on the appointment of an architect (Martin Hawtree) to look at the suggestions in more detail.”
Tom Gallacher, secretary of the St. Andrews Club, backed up that statement. “Most of the hysteria seems to be from outside St. Andrews, not here,” he said. “People here are quite used to change.”
Dawson refutes suggestions that his organization and the Links Trust came up with these changes without consulting the townsfolk of St. Andrews.
The changes will be made in two phases, with some taking place over this winter and others next winter.

José María Olazábal's Europe were beaten in the Royal Trophy by Asia after a sudden death play-off in Brunei. South Korean K T Kim sank an eight foot birdie putt on the first extra hole and then saw Belgian Nicolas Colsaerts miss from five after the teams had tied 8-8. Under Ryder Cup rules Europe would have retained the trophy as holders, but in this competition four players go out on the course again in a fourball and it was Kim and Y E Yang against Colsaerts and Francesco Molinari. The victory looked unlikely when Asia lost the four opening foursomes by three points, but they were only one behind going into the final day singles. Colsaerts and Henrik Stenson both won on the final green and Molinari's brother Edoardo came back from three down with five to play to halve with Wu Ashun. Gonzalo Fernandez-Castaño birdied the last to share the spoils with Kim, but wins for Yoshinori Fujimoto over Marcel Siem, Jeev Milkha Singh over Miguel Angel Jiménez and then in the final game Yang over Molinari set up the shoot-out. 58

Oakley: McIlroy, Nike breached deal Apparel-maker Oakley has sued golfer Rory McIlroy and Nike, saying they breached the world's top-ranked golfer's existing contract with Oakley when he recently signed a new deal with Nike. According to a lawsuit filed in December in federal court in Santa Ana, Calif., Oakley tried to use its "right of first refusal" to match the Nike offer, but McIlroy and his agent, Conor Ridge, ignored the counteroffer, thereby breaching the Oakley-McIlroy contract. Oakley claims in its lawsuit that its contractual rights for McIlroy's endorsements of its eyewear and performance apparel would be 30 percent of the Nike package. If the reports in European golf publications of a $200 million deal with Nike are accurate, then Oakley offered about $60 million to continue its deal with McIlroy. No one involved in the dispute will confirm the magnitude of the Nike offer, and it is described in the court papers only as an offer of "$_M."

According to Oakley, the damage that has resulted from McIlroy's refusal to renew with Oakley is "irreparable" and entitles Oakley to an injunction that would stop Nike and McIlroy from concluding or implementing their contract. Oakley is also claiming money damages but does not specify any amount and asserts that it has spent $300,000 on a photo shoot for the products McIlroy would have endorsed in 2013. McIlroy's deal with Oakley includes what is known as a right of first refusal, a contract clause that allowed Oakley to match any offer that included payments to McIlroy for glasses and clothing. If Oakley wanted to match what Nike offered, its deal would continue into 2013 instead of expiring Dec. 31.

The key to any resolution of the dispute is in a string of emails between Oakley and Ridge that began in September. Late on Sept. 29, a Saturday, as negotiations for a renewal of the Oakley deal seemed to be falling apart, a sports marketing executive at Oakley named Pat McIlvain sent an email to Ridge that said: "Understood. We are out of the mix. No contract for 2013. Pat Mac." The late-night "out of the mix" email is clearly the basis for Friday's statement from McIlroy's management company in Dublin to ESPN.com, asserting that "McIlroy has fulfilled all of his obligations to Oakley, and the claims in the lawsuit are entirely baseless." McIlroy and Nike will assert in court that McIlvain's email was a waiver of Oakley's contractual rights to renew with McIlroy. But McIlroy's team of agents and lawyers, after the supposed waiver, then continued to bargain with Oakley and gave it the dollar amounts that January/February 2013

It was not until Oct. 23 that McIlroy's attorney finally told Oakley that the golfer "would not be continuing his relationship with Oakley beyond Dec. 31" and that they "would not engage in any further correspondence on the matter of the right of first refusal." As McIlroy ascended to the world's top ranking, his endorsement deals began to expire, giving him a chance to put together the most lucrative package in the history of the sport. With Titleist and Footjoy, McIlroy's previous sponsors, fading out of the picture, Nike entered with an offer for head-to-toe coverage that is reported to be worth more than $200 million. It was to include everything -- equipment, footwear, performance apparel, and what sports marketing folks like to call the "front of the hat."

Kaymer does the double for Germany at NGC It’s interesting to hear Martin Kaymer speak of pressure. As much as he keeps telling us he’s feeling it, he’s showing us something completely different. A few months back he shouldered the most unbearable pressure in golf and holed the key putt for Europe to retain the Ryder Cup. At Sun City last month he showed similar resolve when he claimed a twostroke victory in the Nedbank Golf Challenge.
H
e felt the pressure of a double bogey on the third hole, and responded with three birdies over the turn. He felt the pressure of Charl Schwartzel breathing down his neck on the back nine. Then Kaymer pushed his drive deep into the rough on the par-five 14th, and it seemed that pressure had finally broken him. But he responded with a magnificent shot out of the trees and back onto the fairway, and turned what was looking like a double bogey into a birdie. He did go on to bogey 15, but Schwartzel couldn’t capitalise, slipping to a bogey on 17. And that left Kaymer with three pars coming home for a 69 and victory on eight under par. Schwartzel also closed with a 69 to finish second on six under. American Bill Haas took third on three under with a 71, while Louis Oosthuizen just couldn’t get a putt to drop as he signed off with a 74 to finish on two under. With his victory, Kaymer completed the German double in this year’s event after his countryman 64
and mentor Bernhard Langer won the Nedbank Champions Challenge. “I felt more pressure than usual because everybody, even the German media, was talking about a German double after Bernhard won,” said Kaymer. “I’m very happy to win because I’ve been working hard on my game, but it just wasn’t happening on the golf course. You look at all those great names on the bronze plaques on the walkway to the ninth green, and it’s nice to know mine will be on there as well.” Then he says it again. “I felt the pressure because I hadn’t won yet this year. I said to my caddie, ‘We have to win at least once a year’.” This week fans, staff and viewers were privileged to witness yet another highly entertaining Nedbank Golf Challenge. The tournament took on a slightly different spectacle last year, as thick rough and punishing greens made life difficult for the players, and ultimately we weren’t treated to the birdie barrage we have

grown accustomed to in recent years. In fact, for the first time in the event's history, 69 was the lowest score to be carded. But what we did see was the talents of these superstars pushed to the limit, and, not until Martin Kaymer struck his approach shot at the final hole onto the heart of the green, did we know who would win. The sum total of the entertainment was that yet another successful week took place in the Pilanesburg. It brilliantly underlined why the tournament is such a prominent force in the world of golf, and why it is still able to attract players of such high quality despite soaring prize funds elsewhere. The event has had to hold off competition from Tiger Woods’ invitational event for the last 14 years, which annually takes place in the corresponding week as the Nedbank. But it still remains handily placed in the golfing calendar, and a player like Kaymer had no hesitation in pencilling the event into his schedule. “For me, it is just a very nice tournament to come to. Everything is just fun, it is just very relaxed and you know you only have a few more rounds to go and then you go on Christmas break and New Year. It’s just a great tournament to end the year off,” he said.

Even though golfers are being handed cheques in excess of $1 million for winning golf tournaments these days, a one in 12 shot of winning $1.25 million is still something that keeps these successful professionals interested. But, perhaps more significantly, the Nedbank Golf Challenge has traditions and a history that has seen players like Seve Ballesteros, Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Johnny Miller, and many other golfing legends try their hand, and it gives the tournament the kind of prestige that many others do not possess. “It will be so nice to come back next year hopefully again if everything works out and then see my name when I walk on that little path at the ninth green. It is just a very proud moment (to have won), and it’s obviously great to be part of a very, very special group of players,” Kaymer said. Such words from a foreign player re-affirm that those watching the action last month already knew – this event is very special. And, as we start looking forward to this year’s tournament already, we can yet again reflect on another wonderful week of golf that was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
As we saw Justin Rose jokingly gesture to a bunch of mongooses to remove themselves from the eighth green, and later saw a baboon attempting to drive a golf buggy, it dawns on the viewer that the wildlife offers these players something they just can’t have elsewhere in the world, and Kaymer is someone who massively appreciates these things. “The first time I came to South Africa was in 2005 to Fancourt with the German national side and I loved it. Then I came back again 2011 for the Nedbank, and I always went on those game drives and saw things you can only see here in South Africa. “It’s just nice to combine these things – it makes the tournament special. Instead of always being on the range and the putting green, you have so much more opportunities here and possibilities to get away from golf and see something different – enjoy something different and learn things about the animals. That is what I really enjoy. Every time January/February 2013

Gauteng North lifts SA Junior IPT title Gauteng North thumped the Western Province last mont to claim the South African Junior Interprovincial at Paarl GC, while Limpopo snatched the B-Section after an epic battle with Mpumalanga to become the first team to claim promotion under the new format of the country’s largest annual junior team event. Gauteng North, the winners in 2010, underlined their intent to capture the title when they smoked Western Province 4-0 in the foursomes and mowed down the defending champions in the singles to collect their fourth victory in the last decade with a 7.5 - 4.5 result. Team manager Andre Louw said that although they lost one match, their tournament rolled out almost exactly to plan. “It is never easy to win all five games at the IPT but our guys played magnificent golf this week and they showed a real never-say-die spirit,” said Louw. “The way they bounced back after losing to Central Gauteng showed their guts and commitment. I think the secret to their success was that they made sure that that they never got ahead of themselves, that they played every game on its own merit and that they played for the team and not for the man.” With a clean sweep in the foursomes, Gauteng North lost the first three games as Mallick Aslam beat Adriel Poonan 1-up, Luke Trocado downed Keegan de Lange 5&3 and Sean Bradley got past JC Ritchie 3&2. But Ross Sinclair continued his winning run as the Most Valuable Player with his fifth singles win after thumping Robert Bougas 5&4. Jason Smith put Gauteng North 6-3 ahead when he beat Daniel Mantel 4&3 and Philip Kruse took his undefeated record to five when he defeated Ian Snyman at the final hole. By the time skipper Dylan Raubenheimer secured Province’s fourth point with a 3&2 victory over Triston Strydom, the writing was already on the wall because the victory was sealed by the half point that James du Preez earned against Meyer Pauw. “This is an incredible moment for the whole squad,” said Kruse as the elated captain shared a raucous round of high fives with his team around the 18th green. “We came here to prove ourselves and to have pulled it off, means the world to every member of the squad. I think we made a proper job of winning. Every guy on the team did his bit and the team spirit was fantastic.” Meanwhile Limpopo snatched the coveted A-Section promotion after an epic battle with Mpumalanga. 68

After 18 holes, Bianca Lohbauer from Paarl led the field with a score of one under par 71. With heavy rain overnight the players teed off on Day 2 on a very soggy course but despite the heavy conditions, Mae Cornforth from Potchefstroom and Carrie Park from Irene both shot a very good 3 under par 69. Those of us who have spent our professional careers in the worldwide golf industry are acutely aware of the range and variety of player expectations with regard to this great game. These expectations, as we all know, range from the reasonable to the bizarre, from the logical to the irrational, from the doable to the impossible.
R
ecognizing this, I have always believed that there is a core list of reasonable and appropriate expectations that the majority of golfers can and do expect from their “home” course, be it public or private. I have used the items on this list in my discussions with owners, superintendents, golf professional and club managers as well as in the preparation of specific “job descriptions” for staff. Golf course owners, directors, officers, green committee members and general managers who routinely meet and exceed these expectations can expect continuing success in their operation(s).
Speed up play please!
1. A well paced round. A well-paced round is not so much measured by a specific completion time (e.g., four hours and ten minutes) as by the amount of time between shots. To my way of thinking, “well-paced” means little or no time between shots. There are few things more annoying to most golfers than waiting on every shot. It saps the enjoyment right out of an otherwise fun round. 70

2. Appropriate player participation in the care and upkeep of the course. I believe that most people truly want to take pride in the golf course they call home and are generally willing to appropriately participate in its care and upkeep. They only need constant reminding of this fact as well as the knowledge and tools to accomplish this end. Specifically, any and all programs to fix ball marks, keep golf carts in approved areas and fill and/or repair divots should be enthusiastically developed and regularly implemented.
3. Reasonable consideration of the environment with regard to maintenance practices. Most golfers want and expect their course management practices to be as “environmentally friendly� as possible while still being consistent with quality playing conditions. Appropriate participation in local, state and national environmental certification standards is therefore always desirable. It is the responsibility of golf course owners, directors, green committees and general managers to remain aware of and sensitive to the delicate balance that quality superintendents constantly maintain in this regard.

4. A fair and equal opportunity to obtain prime starting times. In the height of season, virtually all golf courses, no matter how “exclusive”, have more players seeking “prime tee times” (i.e., between 8:30 a.m. and 10:00 a.m.) than can be accommodated. (This is not some obscure theory, but rather a mathematical certainty.) Personally, I don’t care whether a golf course uses a sophisticated, computerized tee reservation system or an abacus as long as all players have the same opportunity to get one of these prime times. How can anyone (except the cheaters and would be “system beaters”) complain about that?
5. Smooth greens with adequate pace. Nearly all golfers – even the unruly and unreasonable ones – don’t expect the greens at their home course to putt like Augusta National during Masters week. I do think players can and should expect to be able, except during times of aerification and top dressing, to have a reasonably smooth roll of their ball and an adequate and consistent pace once they hit it. (Adequate pace, of course, is relative to the needs of a particular group of players. For example, a “pure” golf club with a preponderance of low handicappers might reasonably strive for faster paced greens than “Geriatric Country Club”.)
6. Appropriate variety/diversity in course set up. It is reasonable for players to expect appropriate variety in the set up of their home golf course - one that they typically play over and over again. This includes a diversity of challenging pin placements, numerous tee locations and multiple access points to and from the course from cart paths. It may be the same course, but it should be set up in as many different ways as possible to maintain enthusiasm and interest. Continued on p74

7. Reasonable attention to detail with regard to course maintenance. Once again, I don’t believe that most golfers expect their course to play like Pebble Beach during U.S. Open week. I do think that most players can and should expect reasonably level tees, appropriate amounts of water consistently applied to all playing areas (People just hate hitting a good drive only to have it “plug” in the centre of the fairway, especially when it hasn’t rained in a month!), bunkers edged, raked and filled with a uniformly consistent depth and type of sand, green grass (except during water shortages and/or times of drought, and the general absence of weeds. Sounds simple, doesn’t it? Making it happen is the ongoing challenge of ownership and management.

8. A knowledgeable, friendly and openminded superintendent. Golfers expect “their” superintendent to be someone genuinely willing to listen to reasonable suggestions and implement appropriate change. At the same time, they expect he or she to be someone who “knows his or her stuff ” and isn’t buffaloed into doing something ergonomically incorrect to the golf course at the unauthorized direction of an uninformed green committee chairman. It isn’t an easy position to be in, but great superintendents succeed day to day, month to month, and year to year in obtaining the proper balance of “player input” and sound agronomic practices. 74

9. Courtesy and etiquette from both fellow players and golf course staff. Golf courses are, by definition, havens of refuge from the “hustle and bustle of the real world” - places where players and staff aspire to always treat each other with civility and courtesy. This attitude, of course, is nowhere more important than on the golf course itself. Disputes with regard to possible rules violations, suggestions to further improve playing conditions and observations with regard to staff training should always be handled with diplomacy and tact. Temper tantrums, cheating and employee abuse should never be tolerated.
10. Respect for the traditions of the game. No game is more steeped in history and tradition than golf. I believe that most golfers are cognizant of this fact and supportive of their golf course being operated accordingly, even if they themselves are not walking dictionaries of golf trivia. As such, golfers don’t want an abundance of quirky local rules, purple billboards announcing the yardage to the green every ten yards, or sevensomes as their regular modus operandi. Let’s all play golf as it was meant to be.
11. Good, ongoing communication between ownership, management and golfers. The fundamental importance of good communication in any field of endeavour can never be underestimated and it is certainly no different in the world of golf. Great golf course operations communicate regularly and clearly any and all material changes to their “community of players” with regard to general policies, operating procedures, aeration schedules, chemical applications and course closings. I have found golfers to be particularly tolerant of most any reasonable change - if they know of them in advance. January/February 2013

Tandi on Tour The 2012 Ladies European Tour season has finally come to an end and now winds down until the start of the new season in February 2013 Brisbane, Australia. My last two events were the Ladies Indian Open in New Delhi (30 Nov – 2 Dec) played on the DLF Links and the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters (6 – 9 Dec) played on the Emirates Golf Course and is the season finale.

he DLF Links course in India is always a treat to play and this year was in the best condition I have ever seen it in the four years I have been back to play. The rough was thick and brutal, the greens fast and firm. Interestingly, the Gurgaon area where the event is played was almost unrecognisable due to the constant construction and development in the area. New sky rise buildings seem to be appearing every year, a sign that India still has a booming economy! Also under construction was a brand new 9 holes designed by Gary Player that will be ready to play by the middle of next year. The Ladies Indian Open is a co-sanctioned event between the Ladies European Tour and the Ladies Asian Tour and boasts a broad spectrum of players from both Tours to provide a very international field of talent. This year the event was won by Pornanong Platlum of Thailand on a score of -13, 4 shots clear from the next competitor. Results for South African players in India: Stacy Bregman tied 22nd, Connie Chen on tied 36th and Tandi Cuningham on tied 39th. Straight after play on Sunday in India, all the girls make their way to Dubai for the Wednesday start. 82
In my Pro-am on the Tuesday before the start of the Dubai event, I had the privilege of meeting Henrik Stenson. He happened to be good friends of one of my proam partners and ended up walking the back nine with us. We spent most of our time discussing all the weird and wonderful things that make South Africa so unique and special, one of them being his keen fondness for biltong. Henrik, who now holds the SA Open Title for 2012, is a big fan of South Africa and I am sure we can expect to see more of him. The Emirates Golf Club is my personal favourite course on Tour and I love coming back each and every year for the Dubai event. Not only are the players and guests very well looked after and entertained, but the venue is truly magnificent. This year the course was playing the shortest it has in several years. The fairways and greens being particular firm and providing much more run than in the past. Now just because a course is playing shorter does not necessarily mean that it is easier. Club selection and positioning off the tee becomes crucial and so does well struck iron shots.

The winner of the event was LPGA player, Shanshan Feng, who ran away from the field from day one and ended off on -21 for 4 rounds and 5 shots clear of the next competitor. Results for the South African players: Stacy Bregman tied on 19th, Tandi Cuningham on tied 34th and Ashleigh Simon on tied 46th All that is left for the remainder of the year is for the handful of top South African amateur and Professional ladies that are qualifying at Tour School for a spot in the top 30 and full status for next season on the Ladies European Tour. This year the Tour School is being held in Agadir, Morocco. For the girls who are exempt for next season they will take some well-deserved relax time over the festive season and then training starts all over again for the new season in early January. Monty, Schofield added to Hall of Fame Colin Montgomerie and Ken Schofield share, as player and administrator respectively, a special affinity with both The European Tour and The Ryder Cup and they will be honored for their contribution to the game this year when they are inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame & Museum.
Montgomerie – elected through the International Ballot – and Schofield – selected through the Lifetime Achievement Category – will be honoured along with fellow 2013 inductees Fred Couples, Willie Park Jr. and Ken Venturi at the Induction Ceremony on May 6, 2013, at the World Golf Village in St. Augustine, Fla. The Ceremony will once again kick off THE PLAYERS Championship week. George O’Grady, The European Tour Chief Executive, and Jack Peter, the Hall of Fame Chief Operating Officer, made the official announcement at a press conference attended by both Montgomerie and Schofield prior to The Race to Dubai European Tour Golfer of the Year Luncheon in London. “Colin’s achievement in winning the Harry Var86

Ken provided more opportunities for top players to compete around the world, while Colin took advantage of these opportunities and set an unmatched standard of prolonged excellence on The European Tour."

Montgomerie dominated The European Tour in the 1990s, finishing Number One seven times in succession from 1993 and then capturing another Harry Vardon Trophy in 2005. The Scot turned professional in 1987, following his second Walker Cup appearance, and won 31 European Tour titles – a record by a British player – including three successive PGA Championships at Wentworth Club and, in total, 40 tournaments worldwide. In eight successive Ryder Cup appearances from 1991, Montgomerie created a remarkable record of being unbeaten in the singles with a 6January/February 2013

The Rolex World’s Top 1000 Golf Courses Second Edition Launches 2010 saw the first edition of the Rolex World’s Top 1000 Golf Courses. Building on the success and appreciation of that publication, the team at D’Algue Selection, under the leadership of its founder Gaëtan Mourgue d’Algue, has collaborated to produce this second edition, which once again reviews the golf courses of the world and establishes the very best 1000.

aëtan Mourgue d’Algue was one of France’s finest golfers of his generation, a founder of the Golf Européen magazine and the Trophée Lancôme, and was also one of the main instigators of the European Tour. In this publication he has been ably supported by his daughter Kristel, 1995 NCAA national champion and former European Women’s Tour member, and Bruce Critchley, Walker Cup player and respected commentator with Sky Sports UK; together they persuaded Rolex to come on board for this farreaching venture. As a major sponsor of golf globally and with deep respect for the game’s values and traditions, Rolex is a natural partner of D’Algue Selection which has once again produced a genuine and totally independent ranking for the world’s top golf courses.
The principles are the same as for the first edition. There are some 32000 courses located around the world and a team of 200 independent, yet fully qualified, inspectors located throughout the world have reviewed the courses within their area. They were obviously interested in those that have emerged since 2010, while never ignoring and reassessing those that were in the first edition. 90
Indeed some that were looked at first time round and were not chosen were again checked out, with some making it this time; not that there has been any lowering of standards, just that occasionally recent improvements now merit inclusion. The pace of new construction has ebbed considerably since the “gold rush” days of the late 20th century, though many in the throes of creation when they last went to print have been completed, several to warm applause. In particular, new courses added to the exceptional ones they identified in both Tasmania and Bandon Dunes in Oregon, will be found in the Guide this time, all of them adding to the high reputation of those already there. The other notable addition to the world atlas of golf is Hainan Island, a 300-mile long piece of land in the South China Sea which, after decades as a penal colony, has recently seen comprehensive redevelopment as a centre for tourism. The golfing star is to be found in the north where the Chu family, renowned for the dozen courses at Mission Hills on the mainland, has constructed another ten close to the capital Haikou, with several stretching out over old lava fields.

Mission Hills Golf Resort Donnafugata Golf Resort & Spa, host to the inaugural Sicilian Open in 2011, is one of four Italian new entries in the second edition of the Rolex World's Top 1000 Golf Courses but the only one from the historic island of Sicily. Italy has 17 courses listed in the Rolex World's Top 1000 Golf Courses, published by D'Algue Selection, with Donnafugata's Links course - designed by Franco Piras - included within only two years of opening and categorising it within the leading eight per cent of all Italian courses.
Hainan Island Continental Europe has seen consolidation of existing stock, sensitive renovation of old masters being of greater concern than building ever more courses at a time when local demand seems well satisfied. The renovations have been as carefully monitored as any new creations and in most cases well qualified designers have been part of the remodelling process. On the fringes of Europe there have been new courses of quality in such places as Bulgaria and Cyprus and indeed Greece, the best of which find themselves in the Guide this time round. It is to be hoped the economic gloom surrounding Europe’s core doesn’t make their arrival short lived.

The balance of the guide remains largely unchanged with a little over a third to be found in the United States and the great old courses of Great Britain and its Commonwealth, together with their counterparts on mainland Europe forming the next largest group. Japan is still important in Asia-Pacific, but the greatest momentum is now driven by the new enthusiasm to be found in China, while outlying parts of the world continue to have a significant presence. At the peak there are still just 15 courses – though by no means all the same as before - deemed worthy of a score of 100 out of 100, history, provenance and position in the game still recognised as important elements of “the best there is...” In all there has been a turnover of just more than 10%, with 107 new entries, of which 35 are to be found in the United States. Had this exercise been undertaken say 25 years ago then there would surely have been greater change, but with the world now taking a pause after the most significant period of course construction in its history, the pressure from fine new developments for inclusion is somewhat reduced.
