visit down there? My son by the way has also expressed an interest in playing golf, it would be ideal for me to spend quality time with him on the golf course. He has recently passed his commercial pilots licence and just needs to complete more practical flying time to enable him to fly for gain. I also think it would be an ideal opportunity for him to pick up possible business opportunities on the golf course.
I picked up a magazine of yours the other day which made for some interesting reading, it was very enlightening. I have been interested in playing golf for a while now and was wondering which would be the best way to start; in terms of buying clubs etc.Can you offer any advice on how I would make a start, where I can start practicing, driving ranges etc.I live on the Natal south coast. I am not sure if you have never played the game before or if you are picking it up after a break. However as far as advice on clubs etc, I would recommend that you pop into a club such as Port Shepstone GC or Margate CC and have a chat to the professional there. He will assist you with all your needs. Have a chat with the general manager and find out what a membership will cost you as this will save you money down the line if you are going to play on a regular basis. East London Golf Club is one of the oldest golf clubs in South Africa and is home to the prestigious Africa Open, you would do well to pay them a visit. As far as Mossel Bay goes there are two options, Pinnacle Point Beach & Golf Resort and the Mossel Bay Golf Club. Pinnacle Point is a dramatic course which can be difficult depending of the elements whilst Mossel Bay Golf Club touts itself as the “friendly club� and it certainly is. It would be hard to beat the quality time that you and your son could spend playing golf together, It is great that he has his commercial pilots licence and he will undoubtedly benefit from playing golf both from a social and a business point of view. PGA NEWS An All Round Victorious Finish For The Inaugural World Club ProAm The PGA of South Africa | MercedesBenz World Club ProAm has received applaud from international and local PGA professional and amateur golfers for the hosting of a world-class inaugural tournament.

hief Executive of the PGA of South Africa, Ivano Ficalbi, commented, “We are thrilled with the positive feedback received from the international PGA club teams and are overjoyed to hear that they will be returning to the tournament next year and will spread the word to their fellow PGA members. We are confident that this inaugural event has already carved its niche on the international golfing calendar”. PGA club teams from the USA, Australia, Europe, Namibia and South Africa competed for a total prize fund of US$350 000, including cash for the professionals, amateur prizes and hole-in-one prizes of two Mercedes-Benz SLK vehicles valued at over R1.2 million for both the professionals and amateurs.

Henrik Engdahll from The Crete Golf Club (Greece) took the lead on Day 2 and played a consistent game throughout, culminating in a victorious 1st place finish on 179 points. Australian, Aaron Cox from Caboolture Golf Club finished on 178, 5 shots ahead of 3rd place winner, Namibian Steve Basson from Omeya Club on 173 points. The South Africans dominated the ProAm 4-Ball Alliance from the outset, however it was the international Team from The Crete Golf Club (Greece) who moved up the field and clinched the title on the final day with a 7 shot lead, finishing on 429 points. 2nd and 3rd places went to South African teams River Club on 421 points followed by Blue Valley Golf & Country Club, 2 shots behind on 419 points. Tournament organisers’ spokespersons, Craig ClaySmith and Toy Mzimela, concluded, “We would like to thank all our competitors, partners and sponsors for making the inaugural tournament a huge success and we look forward to hosting our next event from 14 – 21 February 2015”.
90 championship holes were played from 15 – 22 February across KwaZulu-Natal’s championship courses - Durban Country Club, Zimbali Country Club, Prince’s Grant Golf Estate, Cotswold Downs Golf Course and Umhlali Country Club. Following humid weather conditions on the first 4 days of play, the golfers were faced with the challenges of persistent rain and some waterlogged holes on the final round at Durban Country Club. The internationals were in top form leading the field throughout the tournament in the Professional Individual Stableford, which ended in a

Contact lenses for Golf More than half of all adults have vision problems such as nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism and need corrective lenses. Many athletes who fall into this category choose contact lenses because of the competitive advantage they can provide.

ontact lenses come in many off-the-shelf and custom designed options which are available to be matched to the wearer’s specific visual needs: hard lenses, soft lenses, daily lenses, monthly lenses, contact lenses to correct astigmatism, advanced multifocal contact lenses that will allow you to see both far and near without specs and a revolutionary new custom sports contact lens: the HYBRID... What are the benefits? Compared with Spectacles, contact lenses offer a number of advantages to enhance your vision for competition and sport performance: 1. Comfort. Many modern lenses are so comfortable that you don't feel them in your eyes from the moment you put them in. 2. Natural vision. Contact lenses give you your most natural vision without any image distortion. This is due to the correction being on the eye rather than away from the eye as it is with spectacles. 3. Eyeglasses may break and cause an eye injury if you take a hard hit, but contact lenses won't. 7. More stable vision. When you wear eyeglasses, you can feel frames move slightly on your face when you walk. Movement of the lens even slightly causes distortion and disorientation including loss of depth perception. With contact lenses, you also don't need to worry about eyeglasses sliding down your nose or falling off. 8. Flexibility and freedom to use interchangeably with glasses. Even if you've worn contact lenses in the past and found they weren't that comfortable for you after a long day at the office, you could try them part-time strictly to aid your golf game or for other recreation. 9. Built in UV protection. There are various reasons why you may choose to add golf specific sunglasses to complete your golf vision kit. We prescribe advanced contact lenses which cut out harmful UV radiation thus protecting the inside of your eyes from the sun’s harmful effects. 10. Golf Assessment Program for any player aspiring to progress up a level in the game.

Give it the stalk! Green reading 101 - things you should know that will make you a better putter and improve your judgement with other scoring shots around the greens. If you can become a good green reader then more than half the battle is won with your short game. Being able to access the pace of the greens is of primary focus. Once you've established this then plotting the break becomes the secondary but necessary focus. One thing you must get an understanding of is "stimpmeter" readings. Most upstanding golf clubs take them and post them up on their notice boards as a basis for players to come to terms with the pace provided for the day. Average to mid handicap golfers prefer 10 on the "stimp" surfaces but the better player (Pro) likes them at around 12. Being able to have a reference to operate from a pace you have become accustomed to allows you to gear up or down your stroke for the pace change.

Do yourself a favour, when traveling to different courses and environmentally challenging locations that present different textures and may effect the roll of your ball - ask the locals on the tricks of the turf. Ask the green keeper if he's not to busy, the local Pro or that wily old member who's been warring grooves on the counter at the club for the ins and outs. Just don't spend too much time with him though ;-) To become a good green reader requires you to start paying attention to the green from at least twenty meters away. Eyes up, as you walk in, taking notice of the overall lie of the land, where the high ground is, low ground lies, false slopes built in by modern day contouring that course designers are building into the low lying areas. The colour of the grass tells us a lot about the direc-

tion the ball will turn and whether the ball will slow down or keep on rolling. Repair, mark and clean...
When crouching about two meters behind your ball, look to your left then to your right and notice whether the grass looks dark or shinny in colour? The ball will turn from the dark side towards the light side, as most things should in life ;-)
Walk up and check out the crumble on the cup :-) Do you think the Pro's do this to see if there's an insect or reptile in there?! The yellowing, dry or root section is the side the ball will break towards. The blade, green or finer side of the cup the ball will move away from.
Say to yourself, if I roll this one straight at the perfect pace, what will it do? How many balls, cups or feet left or right will it move? Once you've established your miss either side then you can plot your start line - " name your aim and aim your name!" 99.9% of Pro's use a line on their ball or line up with the logo on the ball, you should to ;-) It's as close as you can get to legally cheating! Create your own Ritual from just off the green through the perfect strike and to the acceptance of the your outcome revealed...
Then walk to the one side to verify the colour and also the tilt of the slope from ball to hole. If you draw an imaginary line from ball to hole, does the hole sit overall higher or lower than the ball? Get an idea of the pace adjustment needed.

Rebula and Telfer triumph at Curro World Junior Top South African juniors Jovan Rebula and Kaleigh Telfer lived up to the star billing as tournament favourites when they both claimed victories at the Curro SA Junior International on the West Coast. The reigning Nomads SA Boys U-17 champion defeated Altin van der Merwe by one shot for the Boys Division title in the World Junior Golf Tournament Series event at Langebaan Country Estate, while Telfer clinched the Girls Division with a two shot victory from recent Gauteng North Junior Girls champion Bianca Theron. Van der Merwe, a finalist at the recent Sanlam SA Amateur Championship, blistered the course in 67 strokes to open up a four shot lead on Peter Bohbro from Denmark in the first round, while Rebula was well back in eighth place after an opening 73. However, the overnight leader from Western Province was forced to share the drivers’ seat with Rebula at five-under-par 139 after he signed for a second round 72, while the 16-year-old George golfer took advantage of the windless conditions to reel in eight birdies on his way to a superb 66. Meanwhile Ivanna Samu from Gauteng took the early lead with an opening 72 and held a two shot cushion on Carrie Park from Gauteng North and fellow Gauteng golfer, Shawnelle de Lange. Telfer lagged seven shots off the pace after an opening 79, but rallied with a 69 in the second round. The 10-shot swing vaulted the Bryanston golfer into the lead and handed her a three shot advantage over Park, who returned a 77 and edged into second ahead of Australian Jessica Lasky. In the final round, Telfer picked up two birdies, a bogey and double bogey for a 73, taking her 54-hole winning total to five-over-par 221.Theron from Boland, who aced the 140 meter par-three 16th in the second round, carded a 74 to edge out Park for the runner-up spot at seven over 223. SUNSHINE TOUR – 2013 Player Awards The 2013 Sunshine Tour Players’ Awards function was held at a function in Pretoria last month, with Justin Walters named for the prestigious Commissioner’s Award.
W
hile he didn’t win anything on the Sunshine Tour in 2013, it was the dignity with which he conducted himself in a time of grief when coming second in the Portugal Masters on the European Tour which caught the eye. He was the epitome of a South African, a gentleman, a golfer and a son – and showed the golfing world what kind of people the Sunshine Tour produces. Darren Fichardt won the approval of his peers as he took the Players’ Player of the Year award. Fichardt, who was narrowly beaten to the 2013 Sunshine Tour Order of Merit by Dawie van der Walt, won the Africa Open in 2013, and had three other top-10 finishes. Jaco van Zyl was named Golf Writers’ Player of the Year for his three victories on the 2013 Sunshine Tour. He topped a poll of local golf media who chose from a short list which included Van der Walt, Jacques Blaauw, who won three tournaments last year, and veteran Andrew Curlewis, who won twice.

Smith closes out emotion win at SA Stroke Play All Jason Smith hoped for was a decent result, but the Gauteng North golfer left Benoni CC with a lot more after holing a gusty three-footer for birdie at the 28th for a one stroke victory at the South African Stroke Play Championship last month. It was kind of week that dreams are made of and, as he sunk the winning putt on, Smith’s first thought didn’t run to the prestigious trophy or rising to sixth in the national rankings, but to his father, Dave, who missed his greatest moment. “Throughout my career my dad has been there for just about everything, but that week he had to be in Cape Town,” the 19-year-old said after a closing 69 and winning total of 14under-par 274. “But maybe it was a good thing, because he is really crying now. And at least he didn’t have to watch me shake like a leaf on the last green. My cap was shaking so much that I couldn’t even see the ball. Luckily it was an uphill putt, so I just had to send it off in the right direction.” Smith called the day the toughest rounds of his life, but also the most rewarding. “This is undoubtedly the greatest moment of my career, but it was so tough out there,” he said. “I am absolutely drained, but it was so worth it. And this sure makes up for missing that short putt last year to lose the Ekurhuleni Open in a play-off.” 22

On Saturday 1 February, ably assisted by the entire Golf Operations team, Steenberg’s Director of Golf, Ian Kennedy, and six other Steenberg PGA professionals played golf in a relay style format from 6am to 6pm.
T
his year, Kennedy challenged Dave Usendorff and his team from The Els Club at Copperleaf but as the air is a little thinner in the Highveld, Dave and his pro’s had an extra two weeks to prepare themselves for their turn on 15 February. The challenge was to see who could raise the most money and play the most holes in the allotted 12 hours and although it is a “challenge” the ultimate winner was charity. The intention of the challenge is to donate more funds for others and Kennedy is likely to expand the challenge each year and next year is looking at a team in KZN.
Steenberg is well known for their charity initiatives and Holes 4 Hope is yet another way that Steenberg Golf Club gives back to the community. Holes 4 Hope is one of their recent initiatives and in the three years since inception the event has raised R440, 000. The money was raised through the generous donations and pledges by the Steenberg and Els Club members. Pledges were assured through the holes played as well as the birdies and eagles scored. And the final result was…Steenberg 321 holes and R160,000; The Els Club at Copperleaf 240 holes and R40,000 – thus a total of 561 holes played and R200,000 in 12 hours. When asked about this year’s Holes 4 Hope, Kennedy said the following, “Holes

4 Hope was a humbling and gratifying experience for all seven of us. We surpassed our expectations of the holes and money played, and are grateful that Dave and the Copperleaf team joined in the fun this year. The guys rallied together on their 36 hole loops and nothing could slow us down when thinking of the difference which we were making in children’s lives. We are also all so grateful to our incredible members for their financial and spirited support of Holes 4 Hope and we are blessed to be a part of this great golf club. We have got an even better event planned for 2015 and it is our intention to improve on the occasion every year” The funds raised by Steenberg from Holes 4 Hope will once again go to the iThemba House Trust, which has several child welfare initiatives that they support. These include a safe house for abused babies and children as well as the self-supporting Bulelani crèche catering for 102 children in Delft. Steenberg have also made a generous contribution to the Els 4 Autism Foundation which is one of Ernie Els’ charities. Kids do golf stuff in Mossel Bay Mossel Bay – the ‘Do stuff destination’ – is gearing up to introduce its kids to golf: and to ensure that more and more of them will follow in the footsteps of players like Louis Oosthuizen and Lee-Ann Pace, both of whom hail from the popular holiday town. SNAG COMES TO PINNACLE POINT The Pinnacle Point Beach and Golf Resort launched SNAG – ‘Starting New at Golf ’ – under the tutelage of PGA pro Quintin van der Berg during February. This proven learning and training tool for entrylevel golfers was designed with kids in mind. Using clubs with enlarged heads, tennis balls, and targets, it contains all the elements of golf - but in modified form. It’s backed in the USA by Jack Nicklaus, whose Jack Nicklaus Learning Leagues uses the system to bring youngsters – and adult beginners – into the golfing family. Nicklaus believes that a lack of easier-to-use kids’ equipment has hampered golf development in the past. “In football, kids play with smaller footballs and shorter fields. In basketball, they start with a smaller ball and a shorter hoop. But often in golf, kids start the game with real equipment and real golf balls,” he said. “If adults think it's hard to connect with a tiny golf ball using a long stick, imagine how a 6-year-old feels?” “SNAG allows for full shots, pitching, chipping, and putting, and we provide all the equipment – so there’s no expensive outlay,” said Quintin. “It’s just a matter of getting in and having fun.” Classes take place on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays on Pinnacle Point’s driving range. “Together with our Peak Performance Centre, we’re now able to offer training from the very start to the very highest levels of the game,” said Quintin. Besides the putting green, the Peak Performance Centre boasts chipping greens with bunkers, an indoor teaching studio (very useful on rainy days), 3-D motion analysis, and FlightScope 3-D Doppler Ball Tracking technology, as well as video analysis and FocusBand technology. There’s also a SAM Puttlab and a snack bar – and a clubfitting and club repairs workshop under Master Clubfitter Charles Rich. 34

Where were you born and which schools did you attend? Port Elizabeth, but moved to Durban when I was 4, La Lucia Junior Primary, Northlands Senior Primary, Beachwood which became Northwood boys High. Your dad played for South Africa as did your uncle Graeme, what was it like growing up in such an environment and was it always going to be cricket for you? Yes it was interesting growing up in the household, I was lucky to have my Dad with all his knowledge of the game of cricket. He gave up in 1973 but I had my uncle to watch, still playing for TVL at the time. It was a motivating factor for me and in all honesty although I played all types of sports, I was best at cricket and often played in teams 2 years older than my age group.

Is there a particular test match that stands out for you though? My best bowling figures, first hundred, come from behind victories all come to mind but to be honest it was my first Test. As a Kid you have a dream and when that dream is realised, the hard work has paid off, that is the best moment.
You took over the captaincy from Hansie Cronje in 2000, was that a hard period and how did you manage to lift the teams spirit at that time?
You were hugely successful in one day internationals as well; did you have a particular preference for one or other format of the game?
It was difficult as I played under Hansie for 5 years and in the team environment you become like brothers. So to see him go through everything and then also have the honour of being named captain, left mixed emotions. From the team per-
In my First game I managed to get man of the match and that set my career up in that format of the game so once again it was my first match. The World cup 99 and the 438 game were wonderful games to be involved in as well.

Who was the hardest batsman to bowl at and the hardest bowler to face in your era? I often get asked this one but no one batsmen is the answer. There were many good players in the era I played, Lara, Tendulkar, Waugh etc. When they are on form they are difficult to combat but sometimes you’re in good form and they aren’t and the challenge becomes a lot easier. At the time of sending you these questions South Africa are poised to meet Australia in the second test in Port Elizabeth. We are one down with two to go, how do we go about ensuring that we win the series? They have played well in the 1st Test match, with Johnson being the catalyst. A good start in the first session of the next Test will determine whether the Hangover of the first result lingers or not. Combating the X-factor of Johnson will be vital and giving ourselves the best chance to allow our flair to take over through a good foundation is also paramount. Will 2015 be South Africa’s time at the cricket world cup? Let s hope so, we have a strong enough team, how we play will obviously determine our chances. Australian conditions will suit us, here is to holding thumbs. Is there possibly too much cricket being played at the moment? Maybe since the rest period has now been replaced by the IPL and you can’t hold it against the players wanting to earn some good money as their careers only last 10-15 years. You have been commentating now for some time and that looks like loads of fun, tell us a bit more about that? It is fun; I feel that as a commentator you need to try enhance the viewers experience by giving them an insight into what the players thought process may be. Once you have grasped the technical aspects of the job it becomes enjoyable. I do always try and remember that I had my go during my career and also made mistakes so I try not to be too critical but to give a real, honest assessment is what the viewers deserve. What advice would you give to aspiring young cricketers? There are no short cuts so hard work is required. Be a self motivated individual and the key element to all aspects of cricket is your head for two reasons. 1. Balance is very important and having your head in the right position when executing your skills is vital. 2. Your head for good thought process and sound thinking is also key. What do you do for relaxation? Family time, Golf, watching sport and Reading. Do you live by a specific mantra? Believe in yourself, because if you don’t how can you expect others to believe in you. Cotswold Downs and Zimbali. Which is your favourite South African golf course? Sun City and Fancourt Links. Which is your favourite golf course when overseas? Loch Loman and Kingsbarns. Your preferred golf club would be? 7 iron, 7 was my number in my playing days. Do you walk or take a cart? Cart, my two locals only have carts, GPS speeds up play. Your favourite golfer is? All the SA boys, Charl, Louis, Ernie etc …. Overseas I enjoy Scott, Snedeker and Steve Stricker Have you ever had a holein-one? The Suspense is killing me!!! Your ideal fourball would be? Head of the CIA, head of Scotland Yard, head of match fixing investigations and all off the record for 4 Hours 30 minutes where they have to answer everything. 49

After third place finishes at the Ekurhuleni Open and Mpumalanga Open late last year, the TuksSport golfer finally stepped into the winner’s circle for the first time at the Srixon / Cleveland EP Border Stroke Play Championship at Port Elizabeth GC The Centurion player fired a flawless four-under-par 68 in the final round to finish on nine-under-par 207, two shots clear of Bryce McCabe, Jade Buitendag, James du Preez and reigning South African Stroke Play champion Jason Smith. 50

estled in the foothills of the Northern Drakensberg Mountains lies the picturesque 9-hole, 18-tee Amphitheatre Golf Course. Whilst playing on one of the best maintained golf courses in the Drakensberg, you can enjoy the panoramic views of the Amphitheatre and surrounding mountains.
On first sight this course is often misconstrued as a mashie course, but, as stated by many a player...”this is quite a challenging course”. They are affiliated to the SAGU and you can swipe your membership card and enter your score on the National Handicaps terminal at reception. Not only is it a great course, the rates are extremely reasonable to play; from R70 (for a resident) and R130,00 (non resident) for 9 holes and from R100 for 18 holes. They are a caddie-less course, but have golf carts and clubs for hire, as well as balls, gloves, tees, etc for sale in the shop. It is not essential to book, you can pitch and play, but should you require any further information (see their ad above). The course is situated on the Hlalanathi Berg Resort so one can enjoy a well deserved holiday with the course on your doorstep. Hlalanathi offers self-catering chalets from R600,00/chalet per day as well as caravan/camping sites from R90,00/adult per day. They also have a stay and play special where you can save 30%. Book for three nights or more (Sunday through to Friday morning, out of season only) and pay R250 per person per night sharing. Plus you pay for 9 holes and play 18.

Hello to every keen golfer that loves the game as we do. I start out this article with a bit of humor that every Golf course Superintendent can relate to at some stage of their careers
Making turf better, one step at a time In previous articles I wrote about insect control and when to control it by keeping an eye on insect activity and keeping records of these activities when damage to your greens are at its highest. Today I will write a bit about a great initiative that was formed by the Syngenta Company, a company that strives for the best control with the environment as first priority. Through years of testing and bettering products for good control, Syngenta always strives for the best and they are definitely leaders in the industry when it comes to pest and disease control on turf and other plants. I also spoke about plants and pests building up resistance to certain chemicals if it is not sprayed correctly, or too often. For better spraying frequency and for better control of pests and diseases, Syngenta came up with 56
a fantastic program called Greencast. This initiative helps every Superintendent across the country to see when the high risk periods with regards to pests and diseases will occur, and then they can spray accordingly for better results. With the help of several Superintendents across the country, data gets stored throughout the year and these records are made available for all to see. Knowledge is power and the more we know about pests and diseases, the better for the environment and for the health of our turf and plants. Most mornings I have the privilege to see sights like the pictures below, and this is why we take so much care to preserve what we have been given and do our bit to live life and still keep the natural environment moving forward and healthy.

SA Juniors claim victory at Triangular The South African Golf Association’s Junior Team claimed a comprehensive victory over the South African Golf Development Board (SAGDB) and a Scottish side, comprising members of the Scottish Golf Union’s Mens National Squad, at the annual Triangular at Randpark GC last month.
The SA Junior side triumphed with 17 points, with the Scots on 12.5 points and the SAGDB team on 6.5. The morning foursomes provided tight contests among the teams, with the after the SA Juniors and Scots tied on 4.5 and the SAGDB collecting 3 points. However, the country’s leading juniors stamped their authority in the singles to emerge as convincing victors. 58

Rolex secures more time with golf's Asian Tour Swiss watchmaker Rolex has extended its partnership with golf ’s Asian Tour for another three years. The Jock History
The Jock of the Bushveld Tournament which is being played at the Nelspruit Golf Club (5-11 May May 2014) has an interesting history as one sees from the following extract:

I
n 1967 J.J. Van Rensburg and Rip Riphagen created a new topic of conversation in the pub at the Nelspruit Golf Club - a place where most bright ideas originate. Lively discussion ensued amongst the "manne" for many a memorable evening with major contributions from Christo Basson and Ken Myers and the concept of Jack was born. The idea was taken to Committee where it was met with very mixed feelings. However the first Jock was played from Thursday to Sunday and consisted of two 18 hole competitions each day with the 36 hole Lowveld Open on the Sunday. A feature of the first Jock was the presence of Bobby Locke who entertained with his ukulele until 4.00am on Sunday morning then curled up in the lounge and went to sleep. He was awakened for his tee off time but informed Ken Myers that he required some "hair of the dog". The wow duly retired to the pub for a "few" gins after which the old maestro recorded a 141 gross for the day and ken retired to bed - for the day! Jock has not only survived since those early days, it has prospered and since 1969 the tournament has been oversubscribed each year and it is reputed to be the largest amateur tournament of its kind in the world.
It is not just a golf tournament but a meeting place where friendships are made and renewed. 64

SA Juniors conquer French at Serengeti South Africa’s top four ranked juniors rallied to an emphatic five point victory against the French in the final round of a two-day Test at the Serengeti Golf & Wildlife Estate early in February.
The South Africans dominated the first round 4.5 – 1.5, but the local heroes came under a little pressure when the visitors claimed one of the foursomes matches and halved the other early in the final round. However, the French closing the gap only seemed to fire up the South Africans. The country’s number one Kyle McClatchie employed his local course knowledge to lead a spirited comeback, handing Chantilly’s Victor Veyret a 7 & 5 drubbing that put the Proteas back in control, while Southern Cape’s Jovan Rebula defeated Thomas Le Berre from Chantilly 4 & 3 and Limpopo’s Hennie du Plessis survived a hard-fought scuffle against Alexandre Daydou from Cannes Mougins to triumph 1-up. “The team spirit of this side was pretty obvious when Kyle, Jovan and Hennie, having already secured the victory, all went to support Thriston (Lawrence), who was entangled in a tough battle against Paul Elissalde,” said team manager, Eden Thompson. The battle between the reigning Sanlam SA Amateur champion and the top ranked French junior from Bairritz le Phare lasted the distance, with the match ending in a draw and Lawrence securing half a point to give the South Africans an 8.5 – 3.5 victory.

Golf Holiday Trends – Looking Ahead

ur tour operator members were invited to comment on trends that they saw emerging and how that might impact sales in 2013. From a study of the comments, patterns have emerged, and these have been summarised below for each continent or geographical zone in which the golf tour operators are located.
Operators based in Europe Generally, the majority of operators have experienced an increase in shorter stays; however Scandinavian operators expect an increase in long term stays for retirees during their winter period. Some operators have reported that 7-night holiday requests have declined in favour of 5-night stays. Most operators also report that golfers continue to be on the lookout for last minute deals but conversely many also state that forward bookings for 2013 are looking healthy. Budget is key at present in Europe and golfers are looking for “good value 5-star offers” and continue to shop around for the best deal. 68
One UK operator said: “90% are looking for a deal, 10% are looking for experience”. A Belgian operator commented that: “Golfers still want to travel to the popular destinations but preferably for as little as possible, whilst demanding 5 star hotels”. French operators bucked the trend to a certain extent as they reported that clients are spending more money and that high end customers are happy to spend to ensure that they have a great golf holiday. The majority of operators report that the trend is towards direct flight destinations and resort golf with a significant proportion seeing the value in all-inclusive packages. However, some operators in Sweden are reporting that their clients are veering

away from all-inclusive hotel packages: “We have experienced a drop in demand for Turkey because the all-inclusive concept does not seem to be as appealing as much as it did two years ago,” said one Swedish operator, adding: “Now our clients would like to visit different restaurants and experience the atmosphere of the destination and not just the hotel.”

One US operator mentioned that: “We would normally have 45% to 55% of our business in hand and held under deposit by the end of December for the following year, but so far this is not happening this year.”
As always, success can bring its own challenges, and a German operator remarked that: “Spain is benefiting from a shift away from Turkey, where we cannot always get the tee times the client wants and where round times can be longer”.
There has been more interest in domestic USA destinations and to North America as a whole and the Caribbean, with less interest in Europe mainly due to currency fluctuations. Destinations such as New Zealand and South Africa are on the radar but are not heavily promoted to the US golfer as yet.
Winners for 2013 look likely to include Dubai and Abu Dhabi along with Thailand and Morocco; whilst Spain and Portugal are expected to enjoy resurgence unless the recent VAT hikes impact on the incredibly-good value for money golf packages currently on offer. Variations in costs always play a part in destination choice and some UK operators report that increased flight costs, as a result of aviation tax increases, and baggage charges could impact negatively on the recent increase in sales to the USA. UK operators have also noticed that golfers are much more likely to check that the operator offers financial protection, which is good news for all IAGTO operators worldwide and particularly for those in Europe as all IAGTO operators must comply with the EC package travel regulations, providing golfers with the confidence to book early knowing that their deposit payments are in safe hands. Golf tour operators in Central European countries and the Baltic States forecast a rise in demand for lesser-known and emerging golf destinations and expect there to be more competition between operators in what has, up until now, been a fairlysmall tourism sector.

The downturn in the US economy dating back to 2008 is continuing to have an impact on spending patterns for the middle-income earners where job instability is still a concern for some. However, with employment and the economy recovering operators are confident that they will see a rise in international travel, particularly as many US golfers have a “bucket-list” mentality of destinations and courses they must play and experiences that must be fulfilled. There is widespread optimism as operators report that customers are starting to travel much more frequently again. This mirrors the state of the outbound leisure market as reported in this recent article by Travel Weekly USA: “Tour operators are reporting that bookings for 2013 are extremely robust, with an unexpectedly strong rebound in travel to Europe. Operators attribute the positive booking trend for 2013 to two main factors: pent-up demand and pricing. A favourable dollar-to-euro exchange rate and the ability to flex their negotiating muscle in distressed destinations such as Greece enabled operators to cut prices for their 2013 Europe product by between 2% and 18% compared with 2012. In addition, airfares seem to be holding steady in 2013, and travellers seem to have gotten over their initial sticker shock.” Source: Travel Weekly USA (please note that this article is referencing general leisure travel not golf travel). Latin America & Caribbean All Latin American countries are reporting a growing demand for international golf travel and the clients of IAGTO golf tour operators are responding to promotions and new destination offers. In Brazil and Argentina, golfers are looking at Scotland and travelling in groups. Both countries have a high-end golfing market and destinations in the USA including Florida, California and Las Vegas are in high demand. Golfers in Colombia have travelled in groups to attend professional golf tournaments and play golf in the surrounding areas, both in the USA and Scotland. Operators in the Caribbean see golf as a growing market with again a demand from highend residents and corporate clients. Mexican operators tend to be focusing on more than just golf and need to create packages that combine golf with other activities and sightseeing in order to meet the demands of their golf travelling clientele.
Asia & Pacific Australian operators are forecasting that 2013 is likely to be their most successful year to date as the Australian economy continues to thrive. Newer Asian destinations such as Vietnam and Cambodia could prove popular in 2013. Many operators are focusing on ensuring that their successes of 2012 are repeated in 2013 by looking after and fulfilling the demands and aspirations of their clients. Some New Zealand golf tour operators expect that 2013 will be similar to 2012 where many golfers opted for holidays closer to home, eschewing long haul golf trips to the USA and Europe. The Philippines economy is booming (2nd fastest growing economy in Asia), which resulted in a good 2012 for outbound golf travel. The currency

is strong against the dollar and it is expected to remain so throughout 2013. Philippine golfers tend to look for cooler destinations weather-wise but they also like to play courses that have a caddy service as this is what they are used to at home and in nearby Asian golf destinations. Chinese operators forecast a similar look in 2013 which saw an increase of Chinese golf visitors to the USA. However, visa restrictions impact heavily on which destinations IAGTO operators can promote to their clients and any change to visa regulations can rapidly open or close doors. Hong Kong-based operators who deal mainly with the Chinese market report that Chinese golfers are travelling for around 10 days and like to include renowned courses, such as the likes of St Andrews and Pebble Beach. IAGTO operators in India are confident of an increase in demand for international golf holidays in 2013 as golf continues to become more popular country-wide. One operator remarked on the success of their amateur challenge that has extended to 15 cities, and all look forward to tourist boards from popular golf destinations promoting more to the Indian golfer. Some Malaysian operators are looking to promote more destinations in 2013 at prices that are affordable as the sport is broadening its appeal amongst a wider range of income levels. Demand is expected to grow for short-haul getaway trips of 2 nights/3 days with the associated short lead-in times all under three months.
Middle East & Africa Kenya and Nigeria, fairly new to outbound golf tourism, have both seen a growth in demand for international golf holidays. For these new markets, events and group departures remain the most popular form of golf travel. Destinations with direct flight connections will do best as golfers are not as adventurous as they might be in other more established golf markets. Golf tournaments and events such as the Masters are still proving to be a popular draw for golfers from South Africa.

Tandi on Tour There is huge excitement on the local ladies golf scene at the moment. The Sunshine Ladies Tour has launched a whole new series of events for its Professional and Amateur Lady Golfers. This joint venture between the Men’s Sunshine Tour and the Woman’s PGA has produced 7 tournaments with an additional event, The Race to the Investec Cup as the season finale for the top 10 players on the Order of Merit to compete for a purse of R300 000 to be held at Lost City in March. The WPGA, together with the Sunshine Tour have come together with 4 major sponsors: Sun International, Dimension Data, Investec and Supersport to create the New Ladies Tour with many of the events being signed up for the next 3 years – a sign of the dedication and commitment to growing woman’s golf. These events mark the start of a new and exciting chapter for Ladies Professional golf here in South Africa after having not had any events since 2010 until the re-instatement of the South African Ladies Open in 2012 which is now co-sanctioned with the Ladies European Tour. These events will gradually become the spring board for up and coming amateurs to cut their teeth on before making the transition into top level professional tours. This step in the ladder that has unfortunately been missing for the past few years is now filled with a wonderful and exciting local tour. As the tour grows and develops it will attract the likes of top international players and hopefully in the process improve the overall status and success of the tour. From a players perspective this is a prime opportunity for us to showcase our ability and skill. That, as well as playing competitive golf on home soil has always proved to be a winning formula for South African Golfers if we relate it to the men’s European Tour and observe how our local men always dominate early on the season. The South African swing of the Men’s European Tour in the March/April 2014
start of the season and gives players the confidence and boost to then go on and dominate overseas. South African has always produced great golfers over the years, the likes of Gary Player, Ernie, Retief, Charl, Louis, George…the list goes on and on. The Sunshine Ladies Tour I believe will become the start of producing even more successful lady professionals going forward. Already, a few new faces have emerged from the local tournaments which give our golfing future much promise. The gap between top level amateur golf and starting out as rookie professional on tour has now finally been bridged with thanks to the various individuals along the way but mainly to Selwyn Nathan and Margie Whitehouse for having the vision and determination to re-energise our local scene. I am positive that in the coming years we will see even more events added to the schedule and the prize fund purses increasing. The Sunshine Ladies Tour will also get reasonable exposure through Supersport Blitz, Supergolf and the various print media – again the next step to raising the profile of the woman’s game and the possible marketability and exposure. date) the client has seven days to utilize that mower free of charge in order to make sure they are happy with the mower and are still happy to sign the rental agreement. Most Rent 2 Own agreements are done over 36, 48 or 60 months and are done at FIXED monthly fees that do not change for the duration of the rental period , irrespective of what happens to the interest rate or the rand/dollar exchange rate. The Rent 2 Own agreement makes it simple and easy for any golf club or school to obtain refurbished turf equipment. No guarantees are required from clients at all. Turf-Quip does not require any financials or bank guaranties from their clients in order to obtain equipment from. All that is required is for clients to read and agree to the rental conditions and to pay for rental equipment via a debit order system.. A Rent 2 Own solution results in present value cash saving of up to 50% as opposed to paying cash. Lawrence makes history with Sanlam SA Amateur win Thriston Lawrence became the first player in 36 years to claim consecutive victories at the Sanlam SA Amateur Championship in Hermanus GC last month.
T
he Nelspruit golfer showed phenomenal form as he took on Bellville GC Altin van der Merwe in Friday’s 36-hole final and beat him 5 and 4.
Lawrence’s victory sees him becoming the first player to take consecutive wins since Teddy Webber in 1978. Prior to that, it was WCE Stent in 1922 and 1923. With Friday’s win, the Nelspruit teenager has become only the seventh player in the tournament’s 122-year history to achieve this feat. Such was his dominance in the final that the defending champion was never down during the day’s play. He reached the 18th 3up and proceeded to notch up a run of five birdies to extend that lead even further, eventually reaching the 24th 9up. But a concerted fight-back from Van Der Merwe kept the defending champion on his toes. Two birdies saw Van Der Merwe winning the 26th and 28th and two more holes, but it wasn’t enough to catch Lawrence, who eventually took the title 5 and 4. “It feels really great and this will give me a good confidence boost for the rest of the year,” said a thrilled Lawrence afterwards. “I played well today. The first round wasn’t that great but I made crucial upand-downs and then the second 18 I was fired up and played nicely,” he added. Speaking about the final few holes which saw Van Der Merwe diminishing his lead, Lawrence said, “He made two good birdies when I lost the holes, and I hit a few bad shots on the last five holes but I managed to pull it through. It was a bit stressful, because I didn’t want to go to the last hole but I was pretty much in control.” Comparing this victory to the one last year in Johannesburg, which saw him defeating Andrew Light 9 and 8, Lawrence added, “I think I played better this week. The conditions were obviously different but I struck the ball very purely so I think it’s a better win than last year.” March/April 2014
