The graduation ceremony for Gauteng Graduates of the PGA SA class of 2013 was recently held at Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club. Some 120 people made up of graduates and their nearest and dearest gathered to celebrate their qualifying as full members of the PGA. After a gruelling 3 year diploma level course consisting of subjects that qualify the graduate to be competent in any aspect of the golf operation there was cause for celebration!

WINNING LETTER Dear SA Golf Trader I have been involved in the game of golf my entire life and would like to offer my views on why golf has an interesting way of imitating life or, perhaps, vice versa. For those who aren’t golfers, this may seem odd. How could a game about controlling a little white ball be so relevant? When I first started playing, I thought golf was all about swinging hard and hoping I made contact. I reasoned that if I needed to hit the ball a long distance, I must need to create lots of force. Quickly, I realized that making solid contact created distance – and I rarely made solid contact from swinging hard. When I slowed it down and focused on making solid contact, good things started to happen. This perfectly mirrors my experience in the game of life. Rarely is much accomplished from merely swinging hard. Sheer force does create action, but it’s often negated by a lack of strategy. Like in golf, I’ve learned to pull back a little, focus, and work on specific objectives.
Or you can look at it as normal and incredibly valuable. My golf game used to be squarely in the former camp. Two bad shots in a row used to make me want to walk off the course. I’d get up to the next shot and think about all the bad things that could happen. I’ve learned to embrace my failure and move on. My next shot may also go awry, but it won’t be for the same reason. In golf and in life, the difference between an excellent shot and a lost ball can be a few feet. Most people call that luck. Successful people know it’s not. Sure, bad bounces happen and, occasionally, the winds of fortune may swing in your favour, but the primary driver of consistent success is practice. Yet all the practice in the world is not going to help if you’re rehearsing bad form. The best players in the world rely on others to help them recognize their faults. Asking for advice isn’t a sign of weakness, but instead a sign of maturity.

Dear Jimmy You have so eloquently put into words what so many of us feel. Many lessons can be learnt from the game of golf and it once again illustrates the importance of sport in children’s lives as it helps shapes a positive outlook on life. Regards

However there was a metal stake in the way of my swing which I hit and broke my club. 10. Online purchases –
second hand golf balls
T
wo years ago we ran an article discussing the merits of online purchases, in particular second hand golf balls. At the time we randomly selected a company off the internet and put them to the test. The company had an interesting name www.wegotballs.co.za. We were very impressed with the prices, the level of service and with the quality of the golf balls.
Louis was saying that he would like to buy some Callaway hex black’s but that the price per ball new was roughly R40 Whilst away in Swaziland recently Louis and I were chatting about buying golf balls, Louis was keen on some Callaway Hex black’s and I on the other hand was looking for something cheaper for my kids to mess around with. Two years is a long time and trading conditions have been tough for retailers.
I was interested to see if Wegotballs were still a good option for second hand balls I browsed their site and saw that they now have what they term a “mini shop” in Alberton, Johannesburg but that you have to make an appointment with them before visiting the shop. However I was not interested in this as the whole point was to avoid traipsing out to a shop and to be able to buy with confidence over the internet. I had registered with them all that time back so it was just a matter of entering my access details and then I was ready to buy.
So now the cost per ball (hex black) was R25, substantially cheaper than new I went to their Callaway balls and saw that they were offering twelve hex black’s at R249.99 or just under R21 a ball. This seemed really good but what was the transport cost going to be? Well to Durban it was R49.99, giving a total cost of R299.98. So now the cost per ball was R25, subSeptember/October 2013
stantially cheaper than new. I then picked out a value pack of twenty four balls at R119.99 for myself. The hex black and the value pack were both marked as mint and A-grade mix (which according to their website means that these balls will feel and play as a new ball would).
If you have a trusted supplier then buying over the internet is a hassle free way of doing things. They accept all major credit cards and payments are processed using Payfast and Bank EFT’s. I did an EFT and my order was processed as soon as the money went through, this was on a Friday. First thing Monday morning a courier van arrived with the golf balls. Two years down the line and nothing had changed, the balls were in perfect condition (one or two have logos but they do mention that on their website). The balls do indeed play like new and we were extremely satisfied. Would I recommend them? Yes! Buying over the internet is a hassle free way of doing things especially if you have a trusted supplier. If your order is over R700 then they waiver the shipping costs.
When buying online remember the following: • Check your transport costs • Use a trusted supplier, looks can be deceiving • Check the returns policy, would you have to pay for transport and packaging? • Read the privacy policy on the website to see if your information will be shared • If you feel uncomfortable with a supplier, DON’T use them

Tee it up in the Kingdom of Swaziland It was at this year’s Indaba travel show in Durban that we had the good fortune of meeting Bongani Dlamini, marketing manager for the Swaziland tourism authority (STA). Bongani was keen on the idea of promoting Swaziland as a golfing-holiday destination and suggested that we visit the country as guests of STA. The initial idea was to visit in September when the annual Kings Cup Golf Extravaganza is held but this event was cancelled due to elections. So we decided to visit in early July when the temperature is temperate and there is little chance of rain. At Ngwenya Glass factory skilled glass blowers create lovely items from recycled glass They say that first impressions count and on reaching their border post we were knocked out, firstly by the welcoming thatch bungalow (way better than a cold face brick building) and then by the ease and efficiency with the paperwork. So, quickly through customs we headed to the first stop on our agenda, Ngwenya Glass. Situated at the base of the Ngwenya Mountain (where the oldest mine in the world is to be found) is the fascinating Ngwenya Glass factory and shop where skilled glass blowers create lovely items from recycled glass. Temperatures soar here so when we reached our lunchtime destination, Ramblas in Mbabane we were hungry and thirsty and the hearty fare did not disappoint.

Centrally situated this quaint track makes for a pleasant warm up before hitting the Royal Swazi Sun Golf Course, which was on the cards for the following day. Finishing up fairly late we checked in to the nearby Mountain Inn and hit the sack early, eager for an Louis warming up early start the next at Mbabane GC morning.

Swaziland has always been a land of kings and our Friday morning visit to the National Museum and the King Sobhuza II Memorial Park was an insight into Swaziland’s proud history and the high regard in which they hold their monarchs.

We then drove to the Mantenga Cultural Village where we saw traditional Swazi dances and gained insight into the traditional Swazi way of life. Louis has often told me stories of caddying for Kevin Stone at the Royal Swazi Open and of the infamous thrombosis hill on the 11th. Nestled in Not a bad swing! the Ezulwini valley this is a splendid 18-hole par 72 Championship course. The first nine is generally flat but the second nine are far more mountainous and I soon understood how the name “thrombosis hill” came into being. The greens are planted with Durban Country Club grass and are quick and in excellent condition. After a thoroughly enjoyable round we ended the day off with a spot of roulette and a few cold ones on the terrace.

Day three of our visit saw us up bright and early as we headed east to visit the Hlane Royal National Park in the Lubombo region. The country’s greatest concentration of nature reserves are within this region and Hlane has the most southern nesting marabou storks and the highest density of tree nesting vultures in Africa. They also have lion, rhino, elephant and leopard.
We let him play through After a venison stew for lunch we then left the park and headed past Mananga Country Club which has a 9-hole golf course situated adjacent to a game farm. We didn’t play as we were pushed for time but we drove the course on a cart and it was amazing to see how tame the animals are as we came close to several zebras, impalas and warthogs. A lovely small-town country club with warm hospitality.
Clearly a world-class development, Nkonyeni is situated on 12000 hectares of bushveld overlooking the Great Usuthu River and surrounded by mountains It was then on to Nkonyeni Golf Estate which lies twenty or so kilometres south of Manzini where we would spend the night. We had heard lots about Nkonyeni but neither Louis nor I had been there. Clearly a world-class development, Nkonyeni is situated on 12000 hectares of bushveld overlooking the Great Usuthu River and surrounded by mountains.

The 18-hole Phil Jacobs designed golf course is championship standard, they have a spa, a lovely restaurant, a variety of accommodation options and if you are in the market you can purchase an off-plan house tailored to you requirements. We spent the evening watching the Bulls taking a pasting from the Stormers (much to our dismay) and chatting to Rudi Rudolph, director of golf at the Estate.

The next morning Louis played 18-holes with Rudi whilst I made notes and photographed the course, as previously mentioned the course is top notch, I would highly recommend playing here. Only fifty kilometres from Royal Swazi, a trip to Swaziland should include a round at both courses -no doubt!
In a country of kings that is how we were treated –like kings! That afternoon we set off for Foresters Arms hotel where we would spend our last night in Swaziland. Situated in the village of Mhlambanyatsi (which has a 9-hole golf course) Foresters Arms offers an “Olde English” ambience and are famous for their Sunday buffet which we can bear testament to. After breakfast the next morning we could hardly believe that our trip was at an end. In a country of kings that is how we were treated –like kings! Swaziland offers so much and it is only a few hours from Johannesburg. It is hardly surprising that current world-amateur-ranked number three Nobuhle Dlamini hails from Swaziland. Great golf, great people, great culture!

Eyes on the Horizon, not on the prize! I walk around in tournaments watching players I work with, also noticing their playing partners at times and other competitors in holes passing by and I am amazed how little golfers understand about the importance of body language. It amazes me how often after a player misses a fairway or green or botches a chip, pitch or notices their bunker shot is plugged or three putts leaving the return in the jaws or lipping a tiddler that the player through lack of emotional intelligence lets his chin drop to his chest and starts engaging in all thoughts becoming his failure. In these moments the subconscious will start finding reason for this technical inadequacy, justifying reason for the return of their saboteur and even allow an opportunity for the player to zone out of process as they just didn't bring it to the course on the day. Or so they think! Winners never quit, always stay in process, are in control of their emotional state and understand that how they carry themselves out there, project themselves out there, has a direct and significant bearing on their success. Eye's on the Horizon, positive gate or posture - external / peripheral focus relaxed, in tune with the elements & my senses. What do you take in to sharpen yours? Eye's on the Horizon - The way you manage your state positively has a direct bearing on your success...
So how does a champion move or carry them self? I will never forget seeing Tiger Woods at the 2000 St Andrews British Open. I went over to qualify for the Open in Scotland, missed by 1 shot, sigh, head down and then went to watch Tiger play. I will never forget his presence! Leaning on the spectator fence, overlooking the first tee I waited for his arrival and with some murmurs in thecrowd, there he appeared. Wow, literally as he put his first step onto the tee, the ground shook. He arrived with his head up high, chest out, shoulders back and totally relaxed. His eyes were wide open, he was alive for this moment and his senses were fully receptive and in tune with his surrounds. He communicated clearly and with confidence to the starter and to all those around him. If his gaze moved through the crowd his eyes seemed to pierce straight through you. He owned the show, he arrived a winner and did! Besides that experience at St Andrews on the first tee, the way Tiger conducted himself for the rest of the week was impeccable. He was ready technically, groomed mentally and had an inspiration to win that no one in the field could get in the way of. Whether he hit the shot perfectly and celebrated its success or hit one more mediocre and gave it no negative value or attention, he always, at the end of each routine, walked away in a positive gate with his eyes on the horizon. External or peripheral vision is better on your walk; it creates better body language & keeps you more relaxed. It keeps you external with your thoughts, in tune with the elements around you (important for your shot making) and allows you to enjoy the experience and the environment you are competing in. When you walk with your head down, the blur of the grass and movement of your shoes across it gets you too internal, makes you start thinking and burning valuable energy. This creates or allows more distraction to enter your mind, effecting your concentration levels through your routines and reduces your mental stamina in the closing of a round. You must mentally disengage between shots.
When you get into a rut, STOP, change your state, change your physiology. Body language matters... CLASSIC GLENDOWER TO HOST 103rd SOUTH AFRICAN OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP The South African Open Championship goes back to the classics with the announcement that 103rd playing of the second oldest Open Championship will be hosted by the prestigious Glendower Golf Club from November 21-24, 2013. No stranger to top level championship golf, Glendower staged the country’s flagship event in 1989, 1993 and 1997 and the 18-hole championship course has been home to the Sunshine Tour’s annual BMG Classic since 2009. South Africa’s Clinton Whitelaw won the 1993 edition, but the course was kinder to the international visitors on the other two occasions. In 1997, Fijian Vijay Singh held off Zimbabwe’s Nick Price in a titanic battle to claim the title. “We are delighted to announce Glendower Golf Club as the venue for 103rd South African Open Championship,” said Sunshine Tour tournament director, Gary Todd. Balance at the top of the back swing

By Roger Wessels and Jan Fourie Watching a player like Rory McIlroy finish his swing always looks impressive – well balanced and picture perfect but an efficient repetitive swing requires balance at the top of the backswing when changing direction. Poor balance at the top of the backswing leads to compensations in the downswing and inconsistent body positions at impact.
J
an has explained in this article what physical balance is but here’s a technical tip which will help you achieve technical balance at the top of the backswing and create a slower change in direction; practice getting your shoulders and clubhead to arrive at the top of the backswing together. Picture one is an example where it will be difficult to achieve balance and a controlled change in direction; shoulders and body have completed the turn but the clubhead still has some distance to travel. Picture two is an example where the body rotation and clubhead are in sync making it far easier to achieve technical balance and therefore more consistency.

What is balance? Balance is the ability to control the placement of the body’s centre of gravity in relation to its support base. It applies to the body being in a static position and during motion. There has to be a good support base in the legs, and good control in the core (pelvis and spine) in order to have good balance. Poor balance at the top of the back swing can be caused by a poor support base, poor control of the body’s centre of gravity, or a combination of both. Let’s have a look at what needs to be in place, from a physical point of view, to have good balance at this crucial point in your golf swing:

1. Muscle Strength (right hip) The deep stabilizer muscles keep the hip joint stable and open when weight bearing. This allows good hip rotation and balance. As body weight is shifted onto the right leg in the back swing, a golfer with insufficient strength in the hip stabilizers will experience hip joint disorder, lack of balance and even pain. The hip joint “closes� through the pelvis dipping on the left side, or the right knee coming in. Golfers who are aware of their weakness in the right hip may even avoid going onto the right leg in the back swing, and keep too much weight on the left.
2. Core strength (pelvis and spine) and proprioception This can be improved through exercise. Proprioception is the feedback from your muscular system to the nervous system of where you are in space. Strength in the deep muscles of the pelvis and spine enable you to react to the feedback from the legs, and control the upper part of your body in relation to its stable base.
A great exercise would be simply to stand and balance on one leg for 20sec without the opposite hip collapsing. Alternate legs and if you master this, try and do it while performing a movement like bending the knee, or rotating the upper body. Then move on to doing it with your eyes closed! Practice the technical and physical drills and you could well see an improvement in your ball striking. Enjoy the challenge and keep it down the middle. September/October 2013

Wingate Park Country Club – A traditional Country Club What defines a Country Club? Well for one it is private, and then it must offer a variety of recreational sports facilities. A Country Club is often located on the fringe of urban areas and provides hospitality to members and guests such as a restaurant and bar, and may also provide suitable amenities for host-catered events, such as weddings. First developed in Scotland Country Clubs and are considered to be the precursor to gated community development.

ingate Park Country Club is a Country Club in the true sense of the above definition. Situated in Moreletapark on the eastern side of Pretoria, Wingate offers golf, tennis, bowls and road running. They can cater for weddings, parties and business functions and the clubhouse offers privacy and a stunning outlook.
Steeped in history, Wingate Park CC was founded in July 1947. Named after Major-General Orde Wingate, Wingate Park CC was originally a Jewish club where all persons were welcome regardless of their position or creed. Initially offering riding, tennis, bowls, cricket and swimming, the golf course was opened in April 1951. We visited the club in early August to play the course and chat to newly appointed general manager Desiree Stone. Desiree has been working hard to bring the traditions and history of the club to the fore. Trophies and memorabilia that were stashed away for decades have been unearthed and are now being displayed. Desiree has always added the so called x-factor to clubs that she has managed and it looks like she is set to do the same at Wingate Park CC. The golf course is a traditional parklands layout and Louis offered these comments on the course; “There are a lot of dog-legs, mostly left to right which I guess is why I've always played well here in tournaments as my natural shape is left to right. This golf course would also suite the average golfer because most golfers shape the ball from left to right”. “Wingate is not the longest track in the country but don't be fooled by this, accuracy is a must of the tee and with some of the best putting surfaces around its important to leave yourself September/October 2013

in the right areas on the greens. It came as a big surprise to me to see that Wingate is not rated in the top 50 in the country as the course is superbly manicured throughout the year and their clubhouse facilities are fantastic”. “It gives you the feeling that this club has a lot of history and tradition which only comes with time. Work underway on new NZ course Plans have been released for a new golf course in Christchurch, the New Zealand city that was devastated by a powerful earthquake in 2011. The Whisper Creek course will be part of a 157 hectare residential development of the same name. The project, being developed by location businessman Thomas Na, has taken twelve years to come to fruition, and is valued at NZ$160 million. It will include 141 high-end home sites, plus 113 resort apartments, a members-only sports complex containing a 25 metre indoor heated swimming pool with spa and sauna and 41 hectares of ecological parkland encompassing a public walkway, indigenous wetland plantings, and horse/cycling track. The environmental wetland adjacent to the Styx River is to be gifted in perpetuity to Christchurch Council. The land is currently used for sheep and beef grazing.

Record win for Hugo on Vodacom Origins series Jean Hugo won a record eighth title on the Vodacom Origins of Golf series with his seven-stroke triumph at the Langebaan Country Estate late last month. Hugo finished the week on 14 under par with a final round of 67, and equalled the achievements of Darren Fichardt and Thomas Aiken in claiming the biggest margin of victory in the 10-year history of this Sunshine Tour series. But Hugo’s eighth win places him in a class of his own as the most successful golfer in the history of this series. “It’s always special when I tee it up in a Vodacom Origins event purely because of that feeling of achievement it gives me. I always try and prepare well for these tournaments, and I like the laid back feeling of playing and mingling with the amateurs,” Hugo said. The win ends a two-year title drought for Hugo. Merrick Bremner, Jbe Kruger and Andrew Curlewis shared second place on seven under, September/October 2013
while Heinrich Bruiners followed up his maiden victory on this series with a solid share of seventh place on five under.

Faldo set to make Champions Tour stateside debut in N.C. In October Six-time major champion Nick Faldo is set to make his first Champions Tour start in the U.S. at the SAS Championship. The tournament will be held Oct. 7-13 at the Prestonwood CC. It will be Faldo's first Champions Tour entry besides two appearances at the Senior British Open Championship. "I'm curious," said Faldo about why he is starting his Champions Tour career now. "I enjoyed the process of training for the Open Championship and was happy with my effort after limited training. This is the first time I've entertained thoughts of committing myself and playing again. I look forward to the preparation and testing my competitive skills again. "We've heard only the best things about the SAS Championship and know well the enthusiasm for 38
golf in the region. For that reason, I'm happy it all worked out this way and that the SAS Championship will be my Champions Tour debut." Faldo split his major championships between the Masters (1989, 1990, and 1996) and The Open Championship (1987, 1990, and 1992). He was a 1997 inductee into the World Golf Hall of Fame. For his contributions and service to golf, the former No. 1 player in the world received a knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II in November 2009. Sir Nick is the only living British golfer to receive such an honor.

I have played on unbelievable courses in NZ, Australia and Europe, no real favourite as I enjoyed them all. 5. What would be your ideal fourball? My dream fourball would be Ernie, Charl, James K or Louis at Leopard Creek. My regular golf partner was Corrie Sanders and I really miss those rounds with him, he was such an elegant golfer. Fox Signs 12-Year Deal for Golf ’s U.S. Open In a game-changing deal, Fox Sports has signed a 12-year agreement for the U.S. Open championship beginning in 2015. The U.S. Open had been televised by NBC Sports on the weekend since 1995, and ESPN over the first two rounds. Fox’s agreement, which runs through 2026, comes days before Fox’s Aug. 17 of mega-sports network Fox Sports 1, which will compete against the likes of ESPN. “It’s with tremendous excitement and pride that we’ve added events with the prestige and magnitude of the USGA’s U.S. Open, U.S. Women’s Open and U.S. Senior Open to the big events FOX Sports is set to cover for years to come,” said FOX Sports Co-President and COO, Randy Freer. “This is an exciting and remarkable day for the USGA, as our partnership with Fox Sports is a game-changer for our organization and for the game of golf,” said USGA President Glen D. Nager in a statement. The U.S. Open rights were the only prominent golf rights available long-term. CBS, ESPN, NBC and the Golf Channel have most of the rest of the PGA season booked through 2019. Final round coverage of the 2013 U.S. Open drew a 5.4 final rating and 8.4 million viewers on NBC, down 10% from the previous year.

At the end of last year, according to the Korea Leisure Industry Institute, the nation had 468 courses, up from 440 in 2011 and 369 in 2009. What’s more, the amount of play at South Korea’s courses is increasing. The Korea Times reports that 27.6 million people “visited” public and membership courses in 2012, up from 26.5 million in 2011 and 25.5 million in 2009. When love and hate collide I know the heading of my article sounds like a song and maybe it was written for Course Superintendents as they start their spring treatments on the course every year. This is the time of the year when course superintendents punch holes in their well-manicured greens that resemble billiard tables. Why would any person in their right mind want to mess up a perfect green? I hope to answer some of these questions from a Superintendents point of view.
Why do we hollow tine?
I
t is hard to believe that hollow tining helps you keep your greens perfect, but this is true. The main reasons why we do hollow tining will be highlighted in this article. Thatch removal is a key reason why greens and fairways for that matter gets hollow tined, the definition of thatch can be described as, “Thatch is a tightly intermingled layer of living and dead stems, leaves and roots which accumulates between the layer of actively-growing grass and the soil underneath. Thatch is a normal component of an actively growing turfgrass. As long as the thatch is not too thick, it can increase the resilience of the turf to heavy traffic. Thatch develops more readily on high-maintenance lawns than on low-maintenance lawns.” The definition sums up why it is important to remove thatch on greens. Compaction relief, with this I mean compaction caused due to traffic moving over the green on a daily basis, whether it is the machines cutting the grass or golfers enjoying a nice round of golf. Imagine walking in a veld and ahead of you are animal paths heading in all directions, have you ever noticed that nothing grows where all the traffic is fo56
cused on? This is all due to compaction and outside stresses that are not advantageous to normal plant growth, take the traffic out of the veld and the weeds will start growing on these compacted areas and water will struggle to infiltrate the soil. Let me explain how hollow tining helps with compaction relief. A hole gets punched into the greens surface and a core extracted (or not, in the case of solid tines) , immediately the tine breaks the hard crust under the surface and depending on the severity of the compaction the Superintendent can set the depth of tining accordingly. Now for the rest of this article I will focus on “Hollow tining” where we extract a core from the actual green and fill the hole with sand to ensure a smooth putting surface. By filling the hole with new sand it creates a new growing medium for the roots to move into, and the more roots you have, the stronger the plant, and the stronger the plant, the less it will suffer under the stresses of heat and disease. The open holes on the greens give the Superintendent the perfect opportunity to get all the needed soil amendments down to ensure optimum plant growth. The open holes also promotes air movement within the soil, and like all living things, the most important components to stay alive are air,

water, food and temperature. I think I have touched on most of these key components now, except water. Due to the compaction relief, water now drains freely through the soil profile where the plant can absorb the water through its roots and also due to the water movement, a lot of unwanted salts can get washed out of the soil that will usually be harmful to the plant.
Sweeping the cores into piles
The time of the year when most clubs do their tining will be dependent on weather, golf days and scheduled tournaments, but most courses do it between September and November and some courses even do it twice a year, with this I mean that they do it again in March or April. This seems a lot, but the only reason most clubs don’t do it twice a year is because of budget constraints and loss of income during and after the hollowtining.
Cores after sweeping
Now you can take this information and apply this to your lawn at home, trust me, you will see some amazing results. There are contractors that specialize in hollow tining and scarifying of lawns. Ask your course Superintendent for some advice; he might just be able to put you in contact with contractors like this. This is in short why we hollow tine and how we can keep giving you great greens surfaces for most of the year. Next time you see your Course Superintendent, have a chat to him and ask him more about the process, because the more we all know the better, and remember this “sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind to get the best results”. PGA Tour cards on the line in new four-event series The Hotel Fitness Championship in Fort Wayne, Ind., is the first of four $1 million tournaments that will determine who gets PGA Tour cards for the 2013-14 season. It essentially is like Q-school, but stretched out over four weeks instead of six days. The four-event series is for players who were No. 126 to No. 200 in the FedEx Cup, and the top 75 players from the Web.com Tour money list.

The Sunshine Tour makes history The Sunshine Tour made history on National Women’s Day, with being the first time that the local men’s professional circuit has held a tournament on a golf course designed by a woman. The Vodacom Origins of Golf tournament was played at the Euphoria Golf Estate in the Waterberg region north of Pretoria last month, and finished on National Women’s Day. The course was designed by legendary Swedish golfer Annika Sorenstam.Generally the country’s professional golfers are more used to playing golf courses designed by the likes of Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus and Ernie Els. Sorenstam has done a great job here. It’s exactly what Sorenstam had in mind. “I designed the course the way I play the game, where you have to think about every shot,” Sorenstam said when she opened this course in November 2008. Finchem dismisses Tour interest in Euro Tour as 'inaccurate' Published reports in the United Kingdom that the PGA Tour is in talks to buy the European Tour led to a flurry of denials by both parties. Keith Waters, the European Tour's chief operating officer, rebutted the story, telling BBC golf correspondent Iain Carter that the "notion that the PGA Tour is somehow bidding to buy the European Tour is incorrect." Later, the PGA Tour issued a statement in which commissioner Tim Finchem echoed Waters, labeling the reports “inaccurate.” The Daily Mail and Daily Telegraph, citing unnamed sources, reported that the PGA Tour was mulling a takeover of the European circuit as concerns grow over the lack of playing opportunities. A struggling European economy had led the European Tour to stretch beyond its continental boundaries and establish events in Asia, the Middle East and beyond. Still, the European Tour is 64
on holiday for the third straight week, and that has made the rank-and-file restless. But any player dissension extends even deeper. Both U.K. newspaper reports quote Paul Casey, a member of the European Tour’s tournament player committee. “There are so many good things about the European Tour, and it can be such an unbelievable product, given the places we go to and the players we have,” said Casey, of England. “But we are so far from maximizing what we have, and we need to freshen things up. It needs some new energy. "The concept of one world tour has been broached several times in the past. The World Golf Championships were formed in 1999 as an attempt to bring the best players in the world together more frequently.

I’ve had some very interesting meetings these past few years and clearly the Malaysian Government wants to do it right, creating great golf courses and a world-class infrastructure that together represents a self-evolving and sustainable business model. That’s part of the Government’s mandate in terms of tourism and for them to include Els Design in that initiative – and for us to be able to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with them – is something we’re obviously very proud of. “Other developing countries are sitting up and taking notice and, in fact, we’ve had interest from other destinations where governments are looking to use golf to help develop tourism and drive greater visitor

numbers. It’s a very exciting kind of initiative and it’s exciting that Ernie Els Design can play such a key role. “Currently, I have our design team actively evaluating new development opportunities in countries such as Mexico, Columbia, Argentina, Brazil and the Caribbean. We’re extremely proud of our golf course at Albany in the Bahamas and with economic growth looking very strong in that region, we see the potential for other new developments there. It’s exciting for us.”
Moving on, where else are you seeing opportunities?
“In the last 12 months we have started seeing strong interest from South America, especially with golf returning to the Olympics in Rio in 2016. This has to be a positive development and I think the Olympics will succeed in bringing golf to new places and to a new audience. 76
And how is the market for golf course design looking in Africa? “There are definitely some interesting opportunities for us right now. In East Africa in particular, where there is a fair degree of economic growth and stability, we’re in discussions about a couple of potential new projects in that region and judging from the initial feedback that I’ve had from my team, it all looks very promising at this stage. “I think there will also be some opportunities for us in North Africa. As has been the case with our recent experiences in Malaysia, certain regions in Africa have recognised golf as one of the vehicles the government is looking to tap into in order to increase tourism and associated infrastructure. That obviously brings with it some potential for new business for us. There’s some potential for development in West Africa also, which is economically strong due to its income from natural resources.”

At what point in your career did you decide you wanted pursue the business of golf course design? “To be honest, it was something I’d always been interested in, right from the early stages of my pro career, but it wasn’t until around the time I won my second US Open in 1997 that I got involved in my first project at Whiskey Creek in Maryland. How has your design business fared during the global economic downturn? “Globally it’s been a challenging environment these past three or four years, but we’re a relatively small business and we’ve been able to adapt and stay strong. My philosophy is that you have to face challenges head-on and adapt or die; I’ve been very vocal to the teams about this. With the amount I travel I get a good global perspective and can see

The last five years have been especially pleasing. The portfolio of wines has grown from two to eight wines – six red and two white – and we have managed to keep the product quality high and also add some new price point wines. We are working hard at making Ernie Els Wines more visible and have a greater presence in the market, both in South Africa and in a whole range of countries around the world. “And, as with golf course design, I continue to enjoy a close personal involvement in the business. I like to be hands-on. Whenever I am at the wine cellar, I sit and taste with the winemaker, Louis Strydom, and I also speak with him regularly when I am on the road about the current business situation and the strategy moving forward. Our mystery golfer was born on December 1st 1939 in Dallas, Texas into a family of Mexican ancestry.

He is one of only four players to twice win the U.S. Open, The Open Championship and the PGA Championship. The only major that eluded him was the Masters.

His childhood consisted of attending school occasionally and working to earn money for the family. At age 5, he started working in the cotton fields. He left school at 14 to go to work. He earned $30 a week as a caddy and a shoe-shiner.

He had a remarkable spell during a span of 20 days in the summer of 1971. He defeated Jack Nicklaus in an 18-hole playoff to win the 1971 U.S. Open. Two weeks later, he won the Canadian Open (the first of three), and the following week won The Open Championship, becoming the first player to win those three titles in the same year. He won Sports Illustrated magazine's "Sportsman of the Year”.

Famously he boycotted the Masters in 1970, 1971 and again in 1974 complaining that had he not qualified as a player, the club would not have let him onto the grounds except through the kitchen. Later he described his boycotts of the Masters as "the greatest mistake I've made in my career".

Throughout his career he was seen as approachable and humorous. After being struck by lightning at the 1975 Western Open, he was asked by a reporter what he would do if he were out on the course and it began to storm again. Eurasia Cup Joins 2014 European Tour International Schedule The EurAsia Cup presented by DRB-HICOM, a new match-play event between Europe and Asia, will be part of the initial sector of The 2014 European Tour International Schedule. Taking place at Glenmarie Golf and Country Club in Malaysia from March 28-30, 2014, the EurAsia Cup presented by DRB-HICOM will be sanctioned by The European Tour and the Asian Tour, pitting ten of Europe’s leading players against a ten man team from Asia in a format similar to The Ryder Cup. Europe will select the leading four players available from the final Race to Dubai rankings at the conclusion of the 2013 season, the leading four players available from the Official World Golf Ranking on Monday, February 3, 2014 and two captain’s picks. 84
The make-up of the Asian team will include the leading four available Asian players from the final 2013 Asian Tour Order of Merit, the leading three available Asian players invited on the basis of their Official World Golf Ranking and three captain’s picks. With a prize fund of US$6,500,000, the Nedbank Golf Challenge will be co-sanctioned with the Sunshine Tour and will feature a 30-player field boasting some of the world’s leading stars. It is one of seven events in South Africa on the initial sector of The 2014 Race to Dubai, which is launched with the South African Open Championship at Glendower Golf Club, Johannesburg, from November 21-24, 2013.

Le Roux keeps up the pressure South Africa’s leading senior amateur Francois le Roux has dominated the national senior scene this season, but lifting the Western Province’s Westlake Senior title last month rated right up there with the 53-year-old’s goals for this year.
Le Roux further cemented his position at the top of the Western Province Senior Order of Merit with victory in the 18-hole competition at Westlake, finishing three shots clear of John Winter, John Rivett and Williams Hughes in joint second.
Du Plessis claims Kenya Junior Championship South Africa’s Hennie du Plessis put on a master class from tee to green for at Muthaiga GC in Nairobi to claim a commanding victory in the Kenya Junior Championship last month. Although the 16-year-old Polokwane golfer dropped four shots in the last three holes of the final round, his fourth successive 70 was good enough to secure a 17-shot victory in the prestigious Kenya Junior Golf Foundation event. Du Plessis finished on a winning total of four-under-par 284 with the country’s top ranked junior, Daniel Nduva, second on 297 after carding a closing 78. The victory comes on the back of a great run of form for South Africa’s number two ranked junior, who claimed runner-up finishes in two prestigious junior events and a tie for fourth at the Limpopo Open in July.
Le Roux went on the rampage after a top 10 finish in his first start in January. After winning the Cape Winelands Senior Amateur Championships a month later, Le Roux added to his trophy case with victories at the Boland Senior Open, Western Province Senior Amateur Open, the KwaZulu-Natal Senior Amateur Open, Southern Cape Senior Open and Border Senior Open. Le Roux said his goal this year was to achieve greater consistency to have a real chance of lifting the INDWE SA Senior Amateur Stroke Play title in October. “That is the one that has eluded me. Everything I’m doing now is really in preparation of giving myself a real chance to challenge this year and all I want to do is carry this form through to October.” 86

St Dunstans claims third Ernie Els Champs The St Dunstans College team surprised everyone, themselves included, when they scored a runaway victory in the Ernie Els South African Primary Schools Championship at The Els Club Copperleaf last month. Jayden Schaper, Jordan Burnand, Warwick Purchase and Rylan Rees from the Benoni-based primary school in Ekurhuleni combined for an opening round 233 to take the lead on Friday and added a second 223 to claim the title with a team total of 456. The overjoyed winners finished 11 strokes clear of Curro Aurora and 18 shots ahead of defending champions, Glenwood House. A delighted St Dunstans College director of sport, Patrick Gumunyu, said the victory was unexpected, but very inspiring.
Park takes Nomads Junior Gauteng Champs Gauteng North’s Carrie Park claimed her first victory of the season when she lifted the Nomads Junior Gauteng Championship title at Randpark last month. The 16-year-old Irene CC golfer opened with a two-under-par 70 and navigated Bushwillow course in 74 strokes in the final round to hold off a charge from local favourite, Kaleigh Telfer. Park claimed the title on even-par 144, finishing three shots clear of Telfer from Bryanston. The Gauteng North golfer was delighted to break into the winner’s circle. “I’ve had a good season overall, including a second and three third place finishes, but I just haven’t been able to break through for a win,” said Park. “It is great to finally lift a trophy because it puts the seal on all the hard work I’ve been putting in this season.”
Strauss snatches Ekurhuleni Stroke Play Former SA number one Bertine Strauss proved she is still a force to be reckoned with when she came from behind to steal victory in the Ekurhuleni 54-Hole Stroke Play Championship last month. The 21-year-old from Koster in the North West Province dominated the local amateur scene for many years until she took up a golf scholarship at the University of Texas in August 2011. The psychology student just couldn’t resist the temptation to test herself against South Africa’s top ranked amateurs during her summer break home. Strauss signalled her intentions with an opening 73 at the Ebotse Links in Benoni to trail pacesetter Kim Williams by one shot and stayed within one of the South African number two with another 73 in the second round. However, while Williams battled to an 80 in the frosty conditions and high winds that greeted the field in Monday’s final round, Strauss closed with a three-over-par 75 to win by three shots on five-over-par 221. Tandi on Tour The life of a Professional Golfer is often thought to be one of glitz and glamour, jet setting around the world to some of the most beautiful and manicured golf courses imaginable. Well the later part is most certainly true but not so much the first. Yes, we do get to play magnificent golf courses when they are in their most pristine condition and during the most favourable time of the year but as for the rest, life on Tour is nowhere near as glamorous as one might think. Sometimes for weeks on end a player will be living out of a suitcase going from one hotel to the next as they travel around to each event. Most events require that you fly to the tournament so there is a regular routine of unpacking on a Monday and then re-packing on Sunday night to catch your flight to the next venue. Then when you arrive it is a bus or shuttle drive to the hotel, unpack and then go through the whole skit again. Often due to the busy schedule and long hours spent preparing for an event or practicing, you don’t get the chance to actually go and enjoy the sights and scenes of the places you are in. Often you are staying on the outskirts of a major city but just don’t have the time to go sight-seeing. Travelling the world for a living versus for a holiday is two very different concepts. A normal day for a Pro Golfer would consist of getting up at 05H00 am, practicing or playing all day, going for a light gym session followed by dinner and bed.
The one part of tour life that does make travelling around like this more enjoyable is the travelling and staying with companions or fellow golfers. That is where Tour life can be loads of fun! In some countries like Spain, the girls will rent out an apartment for the week between a group of say 10 players. Everyone takes a turn doing dinner, washing and cleaning up. It’s almost like a fraternity house but without the drinking and partying I might add. The girls are more inclined to have a sit down dinner with a bottle of wine, sharing stories and laughing about the day’s events. As expected it is the South Africans (that would be me) who get roped in to do the braai! For the last year I have been travelling with a fellow golfer and good friend of mine, Danielle Montegomery from England. We will often stay, train and do our practice rounds together. In the evenings we will both sit and skype our family and

boyfriends back home or just relax and watch movies. I think travelling and staying on your own does gets very lonely after a while and you definitely need the companionship. Although that said, you can’t room with the same people every week or that also becomes too much. So everyone rotates between fellow golfers or friends and shares with someone different each week, just to keep it fresh and interesting. I think it is fair to assume that almost each and every Lady who plays on tour has more movies on their laptops than the average Blockbusters rental store. With all the waiting at airports and staying in foreign countries, you need to keep yourself entertained. Most European countries don’t have English television channels and you can only watch so much of CNN before you want to go crazy with the continuous news loop. So in every Lady Golf Pro’s travel bag is a laptop or Ipad, hard – drive with movies and an I-Pod packed with music. –

Pace Takes Pole, Again South Africa’s Lee-Anne Pace took over the number one spot on the Ladies European Tour money list this July and the Mossel Bay professional fully intends for her trajectory to continue on its current upward curve. The 2010 LET Order of Merit winner was well on her way to topping the rankings again in 2012, but had her season derailed by injury and surgery late last year. But Pace is a fierce competitor with a never-saydie attitude, used to fighting and working hard. Instead of moping about a missed opportunity, she has come back with two tournament wins and a cluster of top 10 finishes so far this season to pull well clear of her nearest challengers. Yet, although she is top of the pile in Europe and ranks inside the top 65 in the world, the South African is not too hung up on the statistics. At 32 and hitting the prime of her career, Pace wants to win the money list again, but her main goal this season is getting on to the 2014 LPGA Tour. “I’ve always wanted to return to the USA,” said Pace, who completed a degree in Psychology at the University of Tulsa on a golf scholarship and was crowned the university’s player of the year in 2005. From a struggling rookie, the seven-time Ladies European Tour champion has paid her dues in Europe. She expects the US-based circuit to be tough, but Pace has no fear of going back to the starting line. “I’ve always wanted to go back to the United States and compete on the LPGA Tour, because it attracts the world’s top players and you want to compete against the best.

Excuses for when you just have to go and play golf. • I always play well when it rains. • I am almost 50; I need to practice for the senior circuit. • I am just very optimistic I will play well if I golf today, so I'm going. • I am required to golf for work; I love my job. • I am sick of playing golf on my computer. I want to play for real. • I am useless at work unless I golf twice a week. • I bought a golf cart at a rummage sale. • I bought a whole new golf wardrobe. • I bought those new golf contact lenses, guaranteed to cut 5 strokes off your score. • I called in sick at work. • I came home from work, and a note instructed me to leave and go golfing. • I can expense it for business purposes. I• can finally keep my driver in the fairway. • I can finally play under pressure, so I can start betting again. • I could finally afford a pair of name brand clubs - I want to see if I can break 120! • A free round of golf was included with lessons. • A free round of golf was thrown in for test driving the car. • All the cool kids play golf. • All the executives from my company play this course. • All the pin placements are forward today. • All the TV shows are reruns. • Because I am retired. • Church was cancelled because of all the snow, so I'm going golfing. • Drinking beer and golfing is just fun. • Excuse? I don't need no stinking excuse! • Free beer at the turn. • Frustration is a rush. I can only get that on a golf course. • Golf brings our my best competitive nature. • Golf is the only place I can take my girlfriend where she can't talk constantly. • Golf teaches me patience, and I need a lesson. • History dictates the more I play, the better I get. • I almost broke 90 last time out.
