PGA NEWS PGA qualifies apprentices for 2012 The PGA has just qualified its apprentices for 2012. The graduates have done a 3 year apprenticeship working under the mentorship of a full PGA member, have passed exams in Sports Science, Business Finance, Business Law, Golf Coaching and Rules of Golf as well as been practically examined in Coaching and Custom Fitting.
Among the graduates for 2012 is Nelspruit Head Professional Steven Lawrence. Golf Trader caught up with Steven to find out a bit more about what makes him tick. Steven is unusual in that he came to the golf profession and has gained his qualification later in life. Having always been a good golfer Steven originally worked for SA Airways in marketing and securing landing rights, negotiating air space and ensuring that the freight flights were used to their optimum. He then went farming in the Lowveld but was burnt out. However it was while farming that he built a driving range on the farm and discovered his passion for coaching golf. He had always been involved in coaching hockey and tennis to school kids and he realized that coaching was in the blood. At Nelspruit golf club Steven owns a fully stocked pro shop (One Under Golf ) and is involved in coaching and specifically junior coaching. He has 37 juniors in his academy and the club has 68 other active junior members. Steven’s son, Thriston, is an accomplished player in his own right playing of a +2 and representing Mpumalanga juniors, the U23 IPT team, is a member of the Ernie Els Foundation and has travelled overseas as part of the SA U16 team. Of course Nelspruit Golf Club is famous for the annual Jock of the Bushveld Classic – the 44th
2
event was held in May this year - and in whose organization Steven is heavily involved. The Jock is a week of golf where a different trophy is played for each day. The tournament is a medal stableford format with a max handicap 18 and the winner of the day’s handicap is adjusted downwards according to his winning score so that it is unlikely that someone would win twice. Entry is based on a first come first serve basis although the regulars who have been supporting the tournament for years (known as Jockites) do get preference. We asked Steven how it felt to study at such a ripe old age and he admitted that it had been hard to fit the studies in with work and family and junior golf commitments but that the studying wasn’t difficult because it was content that he was interested in. He felt that it had been necessary to become a PGA qualified because the PGA brand is a strong one, is recognized worldwide and he wanted to be part of it. He felt that not only was the knowledge gained as part of the education programme valuable in itself but he felt that having the PGA backing him added a string to his bow. WINNING LETTER Dear Editor Watching a tournament like the Masters one always wonders how special it would be to play on a spectacular course such as Augusta but unfortunately this will remain a dream due to the financial implications and having to “know” someone that can pull a few string to make this possible! Luckily we are blessed with some awesome courses here in South Africa and with wonderful weather all year round! I am, however, a little concerned that this privilege is slowly starting to disappear due to financial implications as well!!!

To illustrate another example, to play only the top 10 will cost one R7 725, excluding the private course. For that money I can pay my annual subs at my golf club, play a round every weekend of the year and enjoy a few cold one’s at the 19th! Granted my home course did not make the cut for the top 100, but still presents a challenging and very enjoyable 18 holes! Whilst I agree that some golf courses in South Africa are prohibitively expensive to most there are still many that represent good value for money bearing in mind that the courses themselves are up against it in terms of maintenance, staff costs etc. I find the green fee average of R372, 60 to be fairly OK considering that you have Leopard Creek CC, Fancourt (Links, Montagu & Outeniqua), Gary Player CC and Lost City GC in the mix. These are expensive golf courses which could also be termed off the beaten track but there are certain individuals who want to play courses such as these and are willing to pay the price. As you have said your home course provides a challenging and enjoyable 18 holes of golf, what more could one want. There will always be the glamorous golf courses grabbing the spotlight and they are lovely to look at in magazines etc and perhaps one gets the opportunity to play one once in a while but unless you are gung-ho on playing only top 100 golf courses (the ratings of which are highly subjective) then you should still be able to find value for money at a great golf course close to you. Frittelli will play on Sunshine Tour One of the country’s top amateurs, Dylan Frittelli, who turns professional this week in the BMW International Open in Cologne, Germany, will return to South Africa to play some Sunshine Tour events. “After playing in the PGA Tour’s Q-School and the European Tour’s Q-School, I’ll definitely be coming home to see my parents and family, and I want to play in the Sunshine Tour tournaments in December and January,” he said. Frittelli won the Freddie Tait trophy for leading amateur at the 2009 South African Open Championship, and the University of Texas senior has decided to “take the next logical step in the process of becoming a better player” by giving up his amateur status. “This all about progressing,” he said. “I have to move on to the next stage of my career.” However, he does note that, while golf may be the same game for amateurs and professionals, the consequences of good or bad play are brought into sharper relief as a professional. “It’s still just golf, but I guess if it’s your living that’s at stake, things are different,” he said. Frittelli spent four years at the University of Texas, and his time there was crowned with the Byron Nelson Award, and honour he shared with Georgia Tech’s James White. The award, given by the Golf Coaches’ Association of American in conjunction with Cleveland Golf/Srixon, honours the pair for their character, scholarship, playing record and citizenship. He finished his college career ranked third on the final individual college rankings. “I had an amazing experience at college developing both my golf and myself and now I feel I am ready for life as a professional golfer and can’t wait to get started,” he said. 6

Construction of a golf course in Cuba to break ground next year Cuba will begin the construction of the first of 13 golf courses in 2013, as part of the government's strategy to boost tourism for the island, an official from the Ministry of Tourism (Mintur) said. Mintur business director, Jose Daniel Alonso, said that eight of the 13 golf course projects are in various stages of negotiation with potential foreign investors, according to an article from BERNAMA, Malaysian National News Agency. The new golf courses are expected to be completed and open for play in four years’ time. Tourism is Cuba's second major industry, with more than 2.7 million visitors and over $2 billion in revenue every year. July/August 2012

Jake captures the Lombard Insurance Classic with a superb victory in Swaziland EZULWINI - Jake Roos was in a league of his own at Royal Swazi Golf Club on Sunday 3rd June, and shot 63 to reach 17-under-par and force a playoff for the Lombard Insurance Classic title, which he won on the first playoff hole.

“You get those days where you’re in the zone. You just plod along, even though everything is going your way, and don’t think about it too much. You don’t get those days often, so when they come around you just flow with it,” he said. The 31-year-old had a superb finish en route to the playoff - he chipped-in for eagle at the 17th and birdied the 18th to draw level with defending champion Justin Harding at 17-under-par. “It’s really a fairytale story,” said Roos. “I didn’t have any expectations at the start of the round, I just tried to move as far up as possible. Then I climaxed at the end with an eagle-birdie finish.”

And after that finish he and Harding headed back to the 18th tee. Harding hit a wayward shot right of the green, which left Roos with an opportunity. Having already won in a playoff for the Platinum Classic in March, Roos knew just how to close out the tournament. “The playoffs have been good to me, so I’m grateful. After Justin hit it to the right I just tried to play a little more conservatively and hit it below the flag and on the green. That worked out perfectly, and then I had a 20-footer, and I went for it. It lipped out, but things went well for me. The Centurion Country Club professional has been working hard on his game, and has reaped the rewards throughout the year.
My swing seems to be a lot more consistent this year and I feel like my ball striking is putting me into positions were I can contend,” he said. Roos couldn’t have been happier on any front: Even on the personal side this win couldn’t have come at a better time. “My wife was here this week with me. It was her birthday, and then we found out a couple of weeks ago that she is pregnant. We’re excited about starting a family together and the timing couldn’t have been better. We have some money now to buy nappies,” he joked. With his third Sunshine Tour win under his belt, the new Lombard Insurance Classic champion looked set for a great year and a solid future at the top of Sunshine Tour leaderboards.

T
he Africa Open was first contested in February 2008, over the Gary Player designed championship course at the Fish River Sun Country Club, near Port Alfred in the Eastern Cape.
In order to increase the profile of the tournament, since 2009 it has been held in January at the East London Golf Club in East London. In 2009 the Africa Open had a prize fund of R5 million, over four times that of the inaugural event. The Sunshine Tour hoped that it would attract a stronger field as a result, and possibly lead to a co-sanctioning agreement with the European Tour in subsequent years. In October 2009, it was announced that the Africa Open would be included on the 2010 European Tour schedule. It was the third event of the four tournament South African swing of the tour, held after the Alfred Dunhill Championship and the South African Open, and the week before the Joburg Open. The purse for 2012 was â‚Ź1,000,000. Past winners are Louis Oosthuizen 2012; 2011, Charl Schwartzel 2010, Retief Goosen 2009 and Shaun Norris 2008. Dates for the 2013 event were not finalised at the time of going to print. July/August 2012

eyond golf East London is known for various other sports, Cricket is very popular and the combined Border/Eastern Province cricket side, the Warriors takes part in our top provincial competition. The Proteas wicketkeeper Mark Boucher who currently holds the Test Record for most dismissals by a wicketkeeper is from East London. Buffalo Park Stadium in East London hosted a match from the ICC Cricket World Cup 2003 and 2 matches of the 2009 Indian Premier League. Triathlon is a popular sport and in particular the world famous Ironman 70.3 South Africa event that takes place in January annually. Ironman 70.3 consists of 1.9 km Swim, 90 km Cycle and a 21.1lm Run. The event starts and finishes at Orient Beach Club rugby is popular in East London. The provincial team, the Border Bulldogs, currently plays in the First Division of the Currie Cup. Most national games in East London are played at the Buffalo City Stadium, which holds around 15000 people and was a host stadium during the 1995 Rugby World Cup. East London schools have produced many fine rugby players, including (in recent times) AndrĂŠ Vos, Keith and Mark Andrews, Christiaan Scholtz, Brent Russell, Rory Kockott, Akona and Odwa Ndungane. Soccer is also very popular in the city. East London is home to Blackburn Rovers, a football club competing in the National First Division. Motocross is also popular and many national events are held in the area surrounding East London, due to the terrain there and in Transkei. East London is home to the ELMCC (East London Motor Cycle Club), which organises most of the motorcycle events in the area. East London is home of the Prince George Circuit (now renamed East London Grand Prix Circuit), a historic motor racing track that hosted the South African Grand Prix during the 1930s and 1960s. 16

The circuit is run and managed by Border Motor Sport Club on a shoestring budget. South Africa's only Formula One World Drivers' Champion, Jody Scheckter, started his motor racing career with a Renault Gordini on this track. Other sporting activities include boxing, mountain biking, skydiving, athletics, horse riding and many water sports such as surfing, swimming, scuba diving, fishing, boating, yachting and windsurfing.
The Buffalo Road Running Club of East London has created two established events that have gained international recognition.

They are the Old Mutual Buffalo 42,2 km marathon, which is held February/March each year, and South Africa's oldest 160 km extreme ultra marathon, the Washie, over a picturesque and undulating coastal route from Port Alfred to the city.

t Wild Coast Holidays they like to make an early start to their hikes. E
ast London is South Africa's only river port and sprawls between the river mouths of the broad Buffalo, Nahoon and Gonubie Rivers. Being the gateway to the Sunshine Coast and the Wild Coast, East London is a major hub for the region and attracts the adventurous and sporting to many international events.
What isn't so obvious is the fact that East London is one of the best areas in SA to visit & surf. Since 1847, about 150 ships have been wrecked within a 5km radius of the Buffalo Harbour, the reason being that swells hitting the Eastern Cape are the most consistent for the whole South African coastline.
Considering the warmer water (temperatures can drop quite low in the winter months – at least a 2/2 wetsuit required, and a 4/3 in mid-winter. In the warmer summer months, water temperatures can get up to 24’c, so pack a pair of boardies). and the number of legitimate right point breaks which have nurtured surfers like Greg Emslie, East London is a world-class zone that sharks have managed to keep quiet (Locals advise not to enter the water in the early morning or late afternoon, when birds and dolphins are seen feeding, and on no account to go out alone). Summer months are characterised by onshore Easterlies – ask a local for advice on where find a suitable break depending on your level of experience.

How much golf can you play in a day? “We’re challenging all avid golfers to see how many rounds they can complete in a day – or even a week – while keeping the rest of the family entertained and happy,” says Stefan Ferreira of the Fish River Sun Resort. In what has become an annual golf fest, the Gary Player – designed Parkland course is open to all golfers, from hackers to pros, to play as many rounds as they like from Monday to Friday at a special discount rate. “At the moment the course is in an immaculate condition,” says greenskeeper Tim Ridden. “We have also introduced a new (semi rough) to the course which consists of two bands around the fairways and stretching around the back of the greens, so this will limit the loss of balls and also gives a better lie position for an easier stroke. “The greens are in immaculate condition, running absolutely true and at a speed of 9.5 on the stimp meter, which is ideal for an accurate putt,” he says. The golf special coincides with special winter rates in the three-star hotel. Two adults and two children under 12 can stay in a King Leisure Room with dinner, bed and breakfast for R1 450 a night, 24
with a minimum of two nights. Teeing off on July 16, and until November 30, the Monday special is R85, for as many holes as you can play. From Tuesday to Friday, the R120 green fee includes a halfway house voucher for a choice of a delicious pie and gravy (or a golfer’s roll), and a beer or cool drink to slake the thirst. From Tuesday to Friday, a two-ball costs R350,00 – including a golf cart for one round, and a four-ball R650,00, which includes two golf carts. The carts will cost R160, 00 for each additional round. On Tour with Tandi The life of a Golf Touring Professional is presumed to be one of glitz and glamour. I think it is enlightening to hear about Tour life from inside the ropes. I am going to share with you the 'behind the scenes' of life on Tour.
M
y journey started with the first event in Antalya, Turkey for the Turkish airlines Ladies Open. The course that we played the event at is the oldest course in Turkey, National Golf Club. The strategy for playing well that week requires very straight tee shots, accurate approach play and good putting. The tree lined fairways are very narrow and will require you to work the ball around the trees if you do not hit the perfect spot in the fairway. The greens are fairly undulating and can get up to 14 on the stimp meter so good feel and touch is crucial. The temperature is also very similar to that of Johannesburg so for us "Vaalies" it is a fairly easy venue to get accustomed to the conditions. 26
Turkey is also a favourite amongst the players for its 'all inclusive' hotels. Now that means you can eat and drink as much as you want all week long. Most people would jump at this opportunity but it is something that I do not pay attention to, or at least try not to. My normal routine is to stay in an apartment and do my own catering, all temptation is therefore avoided! I was also fortunate enough to share my apartment with Laurette Maritz, my fellow South African and her coach/caddy Reeve from Zimbabwe. Reeve might I add is one fantastic cook and Laurette makes some mean pancakes. After Turkey, I then jetted off to Munich, Germany for a gap week before the event started the

following week at Golf Club Gut Hausern for the Unicredit Ladies German Open. Munich has to be one of my personal favourite cities in Europe. It is the only place in the world that I know of where you can be walking around the beautiful city of Munich and see surfers with their surf boards! Yes, believe it or not, they have an articifial wake in the middle of the city where spectators can go watch watch the locals show their stuff ... makes me wonder if they have any idea what a great white shark looks like? Coincidently, my stay in Munich tied up with the EUFA League Soccer finals where Bayern Munich played against Chelsea in the final on home soil for the first time in history. All I can say is what an experience! I have never seen so many blue Chelsea and red Bayern supporter shirts in my life! The vibe and energy was absolutely amazing and the cheering could be heard from everywhere! To be completely honest I am not a football fan but watching that final has converted me. To make it an even better week I got to play my Pro am with two of Germany's greatest football legends, Oliver Kahn and Stefan Reutte so at least I had something football related to talk about.

Holland is great for us South Africans as we can understand probably ninty five percent of the language which is handy for when you go to restaurants, at least then you know what you are ordering. Unlike some other places like France where it can be a complete hit or miss. My next update will be for the events played in Slovakia, Switerland and Czech Republic before I head back to sunny South Africa to defend my Ladies SA Open title in July at Selbourne Golf Club. Just when I thought my week in Germany could not get any better, I was given a BMW 6 series sponsor car for the week to drive around. What a treat! On the Monday before the event started I took a drive into the German Alps in my lovely sponsored car and got to see snow for the first time which is quite an exciting experience for a South African I might add. No doubt the customery snow ball was made.

Simpson avoids disaster to win U.S. Open In so many ways, this was a classic U.S. Open: A tough course, where over par ended up winning; a winner in Webb Simpson who avoided disaster late and got to the clubhouse ahead of everybody else in contention and rubber-necked his way to victory. Anytime you start within an earshot of the lead and shoot a couple of under par rounds on the weekend of a U.S. Open, there's a very good chance you're going to be hoisting the trophy at the end and that's what Simpson did. "To be honest, I never really wrapped my mind around winning," said Simpson, who sounded a little like Geoff Ogilvy in 2006 when Phil Mickelson double-bogeyed the final hole to basically hand the title to Ogilvy. As tough as The Olympic Club was playing, to say Simpson was handed anything would be a little bit of a stretch, but you can't ignore the fact that Jim Furyk bogeyed three of his final six holes, including two of the last three. "This place is so demanding, and so all I was really concerned about was keeping the ball in front of me and making pars," Simpson said. "You hear all the guys say it, but it's so true. The course is so hard you don't know if you're going to make three or four bogeys in a row." Instead, Simpson put himself firmly into contention with three straight birdies and a par to close out the front nine before adding a birdie on No. 10. Then he did what all U.S. Open champions do -avoided danger better than anyone else, rattling off eight straight pars to close out a second-straight 68 and victory by 1 shot. It was classic Olympic Club, where three of the last four U.S. Open champions came from a few groups back to win. 28

Darren ends 9-year wait with victory in France It’s been over nine years for Darren Fichardt, and while the Saint-Omer Open in France is not the highest-profile event, the 37-year-old South African was thrilled to finally claim his third European Tour title. “To win is awesome,” said Fichardt. “The last four years I’ve had injuries and missed out at the Qualifying School a couple of times, and you wonder if you’ll ever make it back. So it was amazing to get my card last year back at Q-School, and to win on my ninth start this season is a dream come true. The exemption for next season is very welcome.” Fichardt won the 2001 Sao Paulo Brazil Open and the 2003 Qatar Masters and played in the 2000 World Cup alongside Retief Goosen, and he drew on his vast experience to see out the victory in France. He overcame a third day of high winds as well as the challenge of Simon Wakefield and Gary Lockerbie of England to claim the victory. Having started the day five shots clear of his nearest rival, Fichardt’s two-over-par round of 73 was enough to seal the victory at five under, three strokes ahead of Lockerbie, who signed for a 69, and four from Wakefield, who bogeyed the last for a 72. Fichardt admitted there were “no heroics” in his round, and he was just grateful to hang on for the win. “It was messy today,” he said. “It definitely wasn’t pretty. I was absolutely terrified and I was happy we didn’t have to play any more holes. “I’ve been in the lead before going into the final round, so I was familiar with the feeling,” he said. “But this golf course has a lot of trouble, and if you try and play safe you can just end up in even more trouble, so I was happy to get the job done in the end. 30

The history (so far) of Battle of the Bush The Battle of the Bush started out as 12 golf aficionados looking to arrange a golf tour. We decided on Bela Bela, where a few of us grew up, and off we went on our first Battle of the Bush tour during the winter of 2010 at the Elements Private Golf Reserve. Throughout the planning of our first tour, we all knew that we needed something bigger, something more than just golf to make this intended annual event a certainty. We were aware of how fortunate we were to be able to play golf, never mind having the means to actually take a day off work, travel, and pay for accommodation and green fees.
And then it dawned on us… Let’s give something back – something small, just to know that we made a difference to someone somewhere… We all brought along 8 pieces of clothing and donated it to a father who had lost his employment and had to take care of his two little boys. No big thing. No publicity. No ceremony. In 2011 our little venture had grown a bit. The two sides, The Pride (reference to the regal Lion) and The Silent Hunters (reference to the magnificent but endangered Leopard) committed to raise some much-needed funds for Huis Tekna, a home for orphaned or abandoned children in Bela Bela. We donated R7 500 to Huis Tekna. Not a lot, but raised only from contributions within our group, which had by this stage grown to sixteen and included two Protea cricketers (who were on the waiting list after year one and only got a place because we’ve known them since childhood). Johann van der Wath had joined up for the second tour. The scope of our “project” had begun to change… Fast-forward to 2012. We heard of a boy from Bela Bela, Ruan Erasmus, who suffered from Perthes disease and urgently needed a hip transplant to enable him to walk and lead a normal life again. Initially we thought of raising R20 000, but in the face of the vast amount of money that was needed for him to get the operation, we set our minds to not just contribute towards the dream, but to fulfil it. AB in the meantime had notified his agent about our plans and he saw the opportunity to create something lasting and special, and out of the blue,
target of R200 000! And we knew that we only had one chance to do it right. Over the next few weeks the twenty golfers spent almost every waking hour working towards the goal, and lo and behold, on the Wednesday evening before the Battle started, we all knew that we had managed to accomplish something special… And so the day of the tour was suddenly upon us. On Thursday 14 June we arrived at Elements and were greeted by something that most of us aren’t used to, namely Supersport cameras! The next few hours flew by in a blur of shots and takes and only afterwards it actually hit home that
an e-mail appeared from Supersport: “We’re in. We’ll help give you guys some exposure. We’re sending a cameraman and interviewer. Good luck!”
we had just handed over R200 000 to not only Ruan Erasmus (who got R150 000 towards his operation and rehabilitation), but also R25 000 each to Huis Tekna and Abraham Kriel Kinderhuis respectively.
We had our charity. It was a good cause, a pure cause, a just cause. We had our medium. Supersport is the best in Africa and according to us, the best in the world! Now all we needed was to get busy with the “small” task of reaching our adjusted

Every evening we made our way to the lodge where we stayed in order to recap the day by means of a proper fines meeting. Needless to say, one or two of the players had to endure the wrath of the chairman for not behaving themselves “appropriately”. After Day 2 there really was little separating the two teams, but late on Saturday afternoon the Silent Hunters pounced yet again and triumphed in this adapted Ryder Cup format, retaining the Battle of the Bush trophy. So, what’s in store for the future of the Battle of the Bush? The tour itself is set to continue for many years to come. But, following 2012 and what we achieved, there is no reason why we cannot set ourselves even bigger goals for 2013 and beyond. If there is a message that we’d want to communicate to all golfers, it is the following: If you are able to go on a golf tour, you are already privileged, so there is no reason why you cannot use this opportunity to also make a difference to any charitable cause that you might want to contribute to. Editor’s note: Since the writing of this article, Ruan Erasmus had a successful hip replacement on 20 June 2012. He already started walking without any walking aids under the supervision of a physiotherapist on the 21st, and his mother is confident that he will be fully mobile within a short space of time. Business performance of golf facilities in 2011 Brought to us by KPMG’s Golf Advisory Practice
It is almost four years since the economic crisis unfolded in late 2008, causing a significant impact on the golf market in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMA). The Research Team at KPMG’s Golf Advisory Practice has been monitoring business performance trends in the region on an annual basis during this period. While the first two editions of this report have shown negative business results in most locations of the EMA region, we are pleased to note that 2011 brought some signs of recovery, despite the negative trend in golf participation in several European markets. This report is based on a questionnaire-survey of 380 golf course operators in the EMA region about their business performance in 2011, the measures they have taken to improve profitability, as well as their future expectations. Among the most notable findings are: • More than half of golf facilities reported an increase in rounds and revenues in 2011, compared to only one-third in 2010; • Courses in the Middle East and North Africa remain the strongest performers in EMA, while Eastern European courses remain the weakest; • Three-quarters of all surveyed operators have taken specific measures to improve profitability – specifically, 56% of all respondents have cut costs, and 30% cut staff; • Green fees were increased at 38% of all facilities and annual membership fees at more than half, each by an average of 5-10%. • Half of golf course owners are making capital investments in 2012, while approximately one in ten is considering selling their facility.

Year-on-year, rounds and revenues have increased at more than half of the facilities surveyed, compared to only one-third the year before, while a fifth of courses experienced a decrease. According to our research, approximately 13% of courses demonstrated an efficient business model of increasing revenues and decreasing costs. However, 9% experienced a revenue drop combined with an increase in costs. Fifty-seven percent of all rounds were played by club members and 43% by daily fee visitors. The share of green fee rounds was higher in regions with a stronger inbound golf tourism market – generally between 50 and 60% of total rounds.

Continued from p37 As the following chart demonstrates, 58% of all golf courses enjoyed a profitable business year in 2011, compared to 49% in 2010, while a quarter reported an operating loss. The Benelux region and Great Britain & Ireland had the highest share of profitable facilities in 2011 (more than 70% each). Our survey suggests that in Great Britain & Ireland a large number of facilities have improved their performance from breaking even to profitable since 2010, when the share of profitable facilities was only 56% and 24% were breaking even.
Measures taken to increase profitability About three-quarters of golf course managers have taken specific measures to improve profitability. More than half changed their pricing policy and have introduced cost cutting, while over 40% have changed their PR and marketing strategies.
A large number of facilities kept the same price levels in 2011 as in 2010.Green fees were unchanged at nearly half of all courses, while 38% of courses increased their green fees by up to 10%. Only 14% of the surveyed facilities decreased their green fees. Annual dues were increased at 56% of all courses, typically by 5%, and remained the same at 38% of facilities. Joining fees were typically kept the same or reduced significantly (by 50% or more). Approximately 5% of facilities cancelled their joining fee altogether. More than a third of facilities reduced staff costs, typically by 5-10%.Thirty percent cut costs related to operating supplies and equipment, and about a quarter cut golf course and clubhouse maintenance costs, each by 5-10%. Many golf course operators have shifted their attention to online media and social marketing, and have reduced the production of printed material. Several golf course managers have focused more on direct marketing to existing members (for example, via targeted newsletters). Many have introduced a more aggressive marketing strategy, promoting special offers and packages, often targeting young golfers and families. Several facilities have also enlarged their marketing team or realized the necessity to hire dedicated marketing staff.

Courses in Eastern Europe, South Africa, Western Europe and South-East Mediterranean Europe, plus Great Britain & Ireland, are the most conservative in their outlook on recovery, while in Central and Northern Europe about half of all courses have indicated a recovery from the downturn.
Conclusion The year 2011 has established a positive trend in golf course performances throughout Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Course operators in every single region reported improved results compared to the year before. Overall, courses in the Middle East and North Africa are still leading the way in terms of business performance. More than half of facilities have reported increased rounds and revenues in 2011, with about 30% recording an increase of 10% or more. Fifty-eight percent of the facilities surveyed reported a positive gross operating profit. However a large proportion of the remaining facilities described themselves as not-for-profit operations. Despite the positive development in business performances, only a quarter of facilities have reached their pre-crisis performance level, and many do not expect to recover before 2014. Courses in Central and Northern Europe have demonstrated the quickest turnaround, with nearly a half of operators reporting a recovery. About three-quarters of operators have taken active steps to improve profitability, mainly via cost cutting measures, as well as enhanced PR and marketing strategies. Many have reduced staff costs, as well as costs related to operating supplies, equipment, course and clubhouse maintenance, each by 5-10%. Across the EMA region as a whole, 50% of course owners are planning capital investments, while 9% are considering selling their facility. Andrea Sartori, head of KPMG’s Golf Advisory Practice, said: “While there are signs that golf courses in Europe, the Middle East and Africa have started to recover from the economic downturn, the speed of that recovery is variable across the region and it will still take time to return to pre-downturn levels of business performance. Although much depends on the overall economic climate, active measures for improved business performance can significantly help facilities to develop. More than a third of the 380 survey respondents are located in Great Britain & Ireland – the EMA’s largest golf market – 25% are based in Western and South-East Mediterranean Europe, 11% in South Africa, 9% in Northern Europe, 9% in Central Europe, 4% in the Benelux, 4% in Eastern Europe, and 3% in the Middle East and North Africa region. The majority (58%) of survey participants are 18-hole facilities, 11% are 9-hole golf courses and 31% are 27-hole or larger. Fifty-nine percent of the surveyed golf courses are standalone facilities, while 41% are part of a tourist resort and/or a residential community. Some of the survey findings should be considered as indicative only due to a lower sample size.

Sunshine Tour announces new match play event The Sunshine Tour’s ‘summer swing’ is set to tee off with a brand new tournament after the R2-million ISPS HANDA South African Match Play Championship was announced last month. The event will take place from 29 October to 4 November at Zwartkop CC, and will bring the match play format back onto the Sunshine Tour for the first time since the 1990s. The International Sports Promotion Society (ISPS) is a ‘General Incorporated Association’ based in Tokyo, and was founded by Japanese philanthropist Dr Haruhisa Handa in 2006 to support charitable causes throughout the sporting world. ISPS and Dr Handa have fostered partnerships with golf ’s governing bodies worldwide and have been a proud sponsor of professional tournaments around the world – including the recent ISPS Handa Wales Open on the European Tour. ISPS and Dr Handa are committed to raising the profile of blind and disabled golf throughout the world, with the ultimate ambition for golf to become a Paralympic sport. Duval, Stricker, Harrington on 2013 Hall of Fame ballot The World Golf Hall of Fame & Museum released the 2013 ballots late last mont. New to the PGA TOUR ballot are David Duval and Steve Stricker, while Padraig Harrington has been added to the International ballot. The ballots have been delivered to their respective voting bodies, comprised of Hall of Fame members, golf journalists, historians and dignitaries from around the globe. The voting window closes on July 27 and an announcement for the Class of 2013 will be made later this year. The World Golf Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony is scheduled for May 6, 2013, once again on Monday of THE PLAYERS Championship week. "The 2012 Induction Ceremony took the Hall of Fame to new heights and we are already looking forward to 2013," said Hall of Fame Chief Operating Officer Jack Peter. "We are excited to begin that process by distributing the Class of 2013 ballots. Like golf fans around the world, we are eager to see the decisions of our voting body and welcome the next class of golf luminaries into the Hall of Fame." Duval's career is highlighted by his 2001 British Open win and his victory at THE PLAYERS Championship in 1999. He has 11 additional PGA TOUR wins and one international victory at the 2001 Dunlop Phoenix in Japan. He became eligible for the PGA TOUR ballot after his 10th year on TOUR in 2003, and met the final qualification for that ballot when he turned 40 last year. He has also competed for the United States on two Ryder Cup teams and three Presidents Cup teams during his career. Stricker has won 12 times on the PGA TOUR and became eligible for the PGA TOUR ballot after capturing his 10th career victory last year at the Memorial Tournament. He went on to win again at the 2011 John Deere Classic, and picked up another victory in 2012 when he opened the season with a win at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions. To date, he has played for the United States in two Ryder Cups and four Presidents Cup competitions. Harrington put together one of golf's great seasons in 2008, when he captured both the British Open and the PGA Championship, putting him past the threshold of 50 career points needed for eligibility on the International Ballot. His first major championship came at the 2007 British Open played at Carnoustie Golf Links, where he defeated Sergio Garcia in a playoff. He met the final criteria to become eligible for the International Ballot when he turned 40 in 2011. He has helped Europe to four victories in the six Ryder Cups he has participated in to date. Royal Troon will stage the 145th edition of The Open Championship in 2016, tournament organiser The R&A recently announced Golf ’s oldest major will return to the famous Scottish links course for the ninth time, with the event having been held there most recently in 2004 when veteran American Todd Hamilton held off three-time major champion Ernie Els in a play-off. The R&A’s chief executive, Peter Dawson, said: “Royal Troon is an excellent venue which has consistently challenged the best golfers in the world. I am sure that Ayrshire, with its historic connection to The Open, will once again provide a superb setting for the game’s oldest major championship.”
South Ayrshire Council Leader, Councillor Bill McIntosh, added: “This is great news – not just for Troon, but for the whole of Ayrshire. As well as giving us a chance to showcase the fantastic golf in this area, our stunning scenery, culture and heritage, The Open will also bring a terrific economic boost with a £100 million benefit to its host economy. This is vital investment for our area that will help create a lasting and positive legacy for generations to come. We look forward to working with The R&A and Royal Troon to provide a memorable welcome in 2016 for an estimated 180,000 visitors to the county where The Open Championship began.” Following this year’s event at Royal Lytham & St Annes from July 19-22, The Open will take to Muirfield, Royal Liverpool and St Andrews before returning to Troon.

1. Where were you born and which schools did you attend? Born in Pretoria, but I was brought up in Warmbaths/Bela-Bela. I went to Affies in Pretoria.
2. Did you come from a sporting background? Yes, I was brought up in a sport crazy family. We love all kinds of sport. 3. At what age did you start playing cricket? I started at the age of 4 with my brothers in the backyard 4. Was it always cricket or did you have other sporting interests? I participated in pretty much all the sports at school. Rugby, tennis, golf, cricket, hockey, swimming and athletics. 5. This is your 4th IPL, What makes it so special? It was my 5th IPL this year and probably the best one yet. The quality of Cricket was really high and it was the closest fought tournament yet.

Please tell us more about the charity? 19 of my golfing friends and I started Battle of the Bush 3 years ago and decided there's got to be a bit more to it than just playing golf. The 1st year we donated pieces of clothing to a family in need. Year 2 we raised just over R7k within the group of players. And this year we raised R150k for a young boy from Bela-Bela named Ruan Erasmus, he was diagnosed with Perthes disease and we decided to help out where we can. He needed a hip transplant and we covered the costs for the op. We also donated another R25k to Abraham Kriel Kinderhuis and R25k to Huis Tekna. Both homes from Bela-Bela.
6. How does the players in the team get along as there are so many different nationalities? It's not difficult at all, all the players are really professional and it's a huge privilege for me to play with these guys. I've learnt a lot over the years just watching some of these guys prepare for their matches.
10. Tough tour to England coming up, are you looking forward to it? I'm very excited! We beat them last time we went there in 2008/09, we hope to repeat that this year.
7. How has your taste for Indian cuisine come on? I absolutely love Indian food. Tikka Chicken masala with garlic Naan bread on the side is my favourite.
11. How difficult is it to switch from 20/20 cricket back to test cricket? I don't find it too hard. I believe it's just a change in mindset. I don't change much in my technique.

Who is the best bowler and batsmen you have played against? I don't really play against him, but the best batsman is definitely Jacques Kallis. Best bowler is a guy I used to face in the nets of Tuks in 2003, Gerrit Deist. He's a left-arm quick bowler and could swing it both ways. 2003 was the last year of pace bowling for him though, after that he got the nickname of "piano man" from me, he looked like carrying a piano on his back when running in and obviously lost a lot of pace. Needless to say, he retired soon after. But in his day, by a long way the best I've ever faced. 16. What are your other hobbies besides golf? I love movies, music and a good old braai with friends a family.
GETTING ON TO GOLF 1. For how long have you been playing golf? Ever since I can remember. Got my first club at the age of 3 I think. 2. I believe you were a scratch handicap in your younger days? Ya, I was a 1 handicap at the age of 15. I was solid for a few years after that, but seemed to have lost my swing a bit. I'm fighting back now.

I always try to fit in a round on tour, but the schedule just don't allow us to play lots of golf. All in all, about 12 rounds a year. I'm trying to play more now. 5. Did you play any golf in India? I played 2 rounds at this year's IPL. It was great fun, but the courses are just not as good as our very own SA courses. 6. Where would your ultimate golfing destination be? Augusta National in Georgia! Oh my word I'd love to play there one day. 7. Who would be in your ideal fourball? Ernie Els and my 2 brothers, OR Ernie Els and my parents. 8. Any memorable moments on the golf course? Hole in one when I was 16. On Warmbaths no.3 par 3. We were a 2-ball(my good friend Stoffel and I), so it's not an official hole in one, but I'll never forget it. 9. What is your favourite club in the bag? Any long iron. 10. Van Wyk scores big win in 2012 Glacier Junior Series
BLOEMFONTEIN – Teenager Attie van Wyk earned his way into the esteemed Glacier Junior Series Final when he won the A-Division of the Dale Hayes Tournament at Bloemfontein GC by one stroke on the 29th of May The 14-year-old’s first victory in the popular series, sponsored by Glacier by Sanlam, was also one of the biggest wins of his young golf career and one that convinced him to follow his dream of following fellow Bloemfontein professional and European Tour campaigner, Jbe’ Kruger, to the pro ranks. The Grey College golfer came straight into the tournament off a bus-trip to the Western Cape and had no expectations of a podium finish. Van Wyk briefly thought about withdrawing, but since the 11th tournament on this year’s calendar was the only tournament scheduled for the Free State, the teenager decided to push through. 64
“I figured that if I could just hit fairways and greens and stay out of trouble, I could maybe post a decent score and finish in the prizes.” Sticking to his game plan, the teenager navigated the former SA Open layout with 15 pars and three birdies. His three-under-par 69 was good enough to edge out nearest challenger MJ Viljoen by one shot for the title, and a coveted berth in the Glacier Junior Series Final. “Winning this Glacier event is huge for me,” he said.“I’ve made the Series Final. SA beat Scots in own back yard PRESTWICK, Scotland – South Africa’s top amateurs took the sting out of a home defeat earlier this year by beating their Scottish rivals by one point to win the Friendship Quaich at the prestigious Prestwick GC last month. The Scots held a one point edge at 5-4 going into the second round, but the South Africans fought vehemently to level the scores in the morning foursomes. With the two-day contest down to the wire, Shaun Smith managed to halve his match with Paul Shields to hand the visiting side a crucial half point for a 9½ - 8½ victory. Victorious team captain and president of the South African Golf Association, Colin Burger, expressed his thanks to the hosts for the growing bond between the two nations.
Bertine Strauss took top honours in Botswana Ladies Open Bertine Strauss, on her summer break from the University of Texas, won the Botswana Ladies Open played over 36 holes at the Gabarone GC last month. She carded 150 (77, 73), two strokes ahead of Kim Williams 152 (79, 73) and Lejan Lewthwaite 152 (78, 74) tied runners-up. On the first day, all the players struggled on the dry and bumpy greens. However Naminia’s Bonita Bredenhann did not appear to have a problem and posted a level par score. The first cold front reached Botswana on Saturday and with a fairly strong wind, conditions were quite tough. On the second day, in calmer conditins it remained very cold and the players managed to deal somewhat better with the inconsistent greens. Top ranked Kim Williams, said “It’s been almost impossible to putt with confidence on these greens, and it was a relief when the ball hit the bottom of the hole!”

• He was born into a poor family in Puerto Rico on October 23, 1935. • When he was seven years old, he helped the family by earning money as a water carrier on a sugar plantation. One day he wandered off into a golf course. When he saw that the caddies were earning more money than he was he decided to become a caddy himself. • By the time he was nine years old, he was proficient at golf and in 1947 at the age of 12, he scored a 67. • He turned professional in 1960. In 1963 at age 28 he won the Denver Open, which he considers his favorite win. He won eight titles on the PGA Tour between 1963 and 1979. • In 1992, he was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame, the first Puerto Rican so honored. • He became eligible to play on the Senior PGA Tour (now known as the Champions Tour) in 1985 and did so for many years with great success, earning 22 tournament victories between 1986 and 1993. • On March 11, 2012, at the age of 76, he participated as an honorary player in the Puerto Rico Open. 1 - Reality check! 60% of shots lost to par occur within 100 meters of the green! 80% of a golfer’s handicap is generated from their ability within 100 meters of the green! 90 % of practise time is spent on the range! 90% of lesson time is given on the long swing! It is because of stats like these, recorded in the mid eighties by Dave Pelz, that I am not going to focus on the long game but rather on other areas of the game that players tend to neglect but will have a much greater impact on their game and help them reach their true potential. Most good players have reasonable distance control when it comes to their long swings, they know how far an 8 iron goes, the only difficulty is when the timing goes their scatter pattern of shots resembles a horizontal bra extending left and right of their target! The challenge in this area is to gain better directional control by tuning into the correct swing sequence, narrowing down the corridor the ball flies, whilst still maintaining reasonable distance in the modern era. With good application of discipline, sticking to one 'miss' or swing feeling and applying it decisively on the golf course, they can plot themselves successfully around, good enough to miss it onto the target or even into areas they can still play from. The problem is not really that or even a thinned or topped drive down the fairway, or even the blocked or pushed tee shot into the trees. Their second shot will still get them back into the scoring zone of 100 meters and in.

The problem area for advanced players is their inconsistency of distance control from inside of 100 meters, their lack of practise time spent in this area and also the perceived value in lesson time when it comes to truly understanding the basic principles in these art forms. Typical scatter patterns resemble a vertical bra relative to you and the target line. Whether a long distance putt, chip from the edge of the green, pitch and greenside bunker shot, distance control is the key. The variables with directional control are not that much of a factor here but a vertical bra effect for any young advanced player may be enough of a distraction to steer themselves right off course and out of contention. The best players in the world use a putter around 44% of the time in a round of golf, the driver less than 6%, irons/hybrids/fairway woods under 20% and scoring clubs (wedges) under 30%. Putting stats in the mid eighties for the top 100 players on tour were around 90% from three foot, 50% from six foot, 20% from ten foot and 0.5% from thirty foot. Six foot in golf is probably the most important shot in golf, having a 50/50 chance of making it. Think twice about pulling your hair out in frustration the next time you miss one! In the modern era of the game, with better equipment, technical knowhow and better surfaces to putt on, the better players on Tour have upped that stat to around 60%. Ten footers have moved up around 30% and the rest have stay pretty much the same. With these stats what does this mean for you? Should you spend 44% of your time putting? Boring! 30% of your time pitching, chipping and hitting bunker shots? Not far off! 26% of the time on your long swing? Close, but you do need to open up the deal off the tee successfully and arrive with competence in your approach play to the green! Around a third of your practise time should be spent in each area to suffice consistency in your game. The percentages speak for themselves, so play them! Just one more point I would like to make before going into the area of self realisation is that the most important statistic taken on any of the major tours around the world, is the scrambling stat (shots from around 100 meters and in, excluding putting on the green). More often than not, the leaders on the order of merit correspond almost exactly with those players leading the scrambling stats. Those players that rule the scoring game collect the prize at the end of the week! Now I just want to close off by getting you to look holistically at your game. To know where you are going, you have to know where you have come from, what works, what doesn’t and what you just have not learnt yet? I want you sit down in your happy place (watch the movie “Happy Gilmore�) and on a scale of 0 to 10, rate where you are at present in these areas: Driving, Approach play, Scrambling, Putting, Mental Management, Course Management, Fitness level, Nutritional balance, Career (be it your golf or something else external), Social time (downtime, getting away from the game), Family/Relations (you are on the course the way you are off the course, find harmony) and finally your Spiritual beliefs (believe in something, especially yourself ). Any area you give yourself less than 7 needs to be worked on! Rate your worst area and start putting goals in place towards turning these into strength. It is all about being competently balanced in these areas to be successful on any competitive arena in the world.

River Club in Cape Town launches Powerplay Golf The River Club in Cape Town recently launched their long awaited fun and exciting form of golf – Powerplay Golf. The event lived up to all expectations and attracted the interest and presence of KFM Dj – Jeremy Harris and the ever entertaining Mr Dale Hayes, accompanied by his show “Super Golf ” and other leaders in the golf industry. The River club has taken on Powerplay Golf in a big way in the hope of offering golfers of all ages and abilities the opportunity to take on a less “traditional” form of the game. Ons onthou tog dat die gemiddelde voorgee in Suid Afrika 16 is, en ons wil aan almal iets oordera met die klem op - iets anders – en plekke wat ons nog nie by was nie, of lekker kuier plekke by ons fantastiese Afrikaanse gemeenskap. Ja net die Afrikaners in die platteland kan ons so laat welkom voel soos vorige kere! Of praat ek nou uit my beurt?

So maak seker julle stuur vir ons great idees. As ons van julle idees gaan gebruik, het Cleveland gholf, Titleist gholf gepaard met Mizuno gholf, gesê hulle sal pryse borg. So maak dit ongewoon snaaks of anders, want dit gaan afhang hoe populêr die episodes gaan wees! Die drie episodes wat die mense die meeste geniet het, was die manne van AF wat ek raak geklits het, en toe die FHM modelle – wat my wou afsit, en die game gholf wat ek probeer speel het toe ek te veel “sopies” agter die rug gehad het. Ek wonder of Francois se gholf verbeter het? Ek weet hy sing uitstekend, maar ai, hy was ’n moeilikheid maker! Ek dink ek moet hom bietjie vasvat en ’n paar lesse gee – nie gholf lesse nie – maar hoe om homself te gedra – want hy is alewig vol dinge en wil altyd verskonings uitdink vir sy slegte spel. Ek dink hy moet ’n sport sielkundige gaan sien, haha. Kan nie wag nie! Nooi ons, dan kom kuier Cruse by julle en wie weet, miskien raak almal dik pêlle. En wie gaan die grooste wenner wees? GHOLF! Ek wil graag sien dat gholf meer pret is vir almal om te speel. Ons lyk almal te ernstig! Groet mekaar, help mekaar, lag vir mekaar, en vir jouself, as jy kan – want die “game” gholf maak ons partykeer so op ons senuwees, dat dit ons ander mense maak. Partykeer “monsters”. Maar dit is hoekom ons mal is oor gholf. Hy leer ons soveel van onsself maar ons kry dit net nie reg om hom te klop nie. Sien uit om van julle te hoor! En onthou. . . maak gholf pret!! Have you got the
Elvis Pelvis? By Roger Wessels and Jan Fourie

Some Technical Background! The pelvis (sometimes also called pelvic region of the trunk) is the lower part of the trunk, between the abdomen and the lower limbs (legs). The bony pelvis consists of the two hip bones. The hip bones are connected to each other anteriorly at the pubic symphysis; and posteriorly to the sacrum at the sacroiliac joint. Each hip bone is made up of 3 separate bones: • Ilium (you can feel the crest of this above the hip joints); • Ischium (sitting bones); • Pubis (where the two halves meet at the bottom). The bony pelvis is stabilized by the deep abdominal and pelvic floor muscles. A stable bony pelvis is absolutely crucial for good alignment and to allow good mobility (rotation) in the hip joints. The “hips” or hip joints are the joints between the bony pelvis and the Femur bones (upper legs).

Some Solutions! Generating force in sporting movements like a golf swing or throwing action requires the ability to transmit loads effectively from the legs, through the pelvis, into the trunk and arms. Three things need to be in place as a prerequisite for being able to do this powerfully: • The bony pelvis functioning as a very stable unit. • Good mobility in the hip joints for internal and external rotation of the femurs. • Good stability in the hip joints. Strong hip stabilizers (Gluteus muscles) will prevent the hips from collapsing or sliding when force is generated and transferred through the pelvis. Weaknesses in this area can well cause a hip slide towards the target which is a technical fault often pointed out to students as a cause for their ball flight problems. Having a hip slide makes it is very difficult to optimize distance, will often lead to overactive hands attempting to square the clubface at impact as the hips and body have got too far ahead of the ball at impact. Poor timing of this hand action will lead to problems such as blocked shots, snap hooks or perhaps a very low ball flight, which in turn can make stopping a long iron shot on a green problematical. Through personal experience I found a hip slide very difficult to correct through practice aids and drills and under tournament pressure always reverted back to the hip slide. The coaches I had in my career had expert technical knowledge but very little Biokinetic knowledge. How the world has changed! If they had suggested a Biokinetic assessment and gym program as mentioned in this article I may well have corrected my hip slide and performed better from tee to green. The following exercise will help you to improve both your hip joint mobility and stability: 1-Leg Dead Lift, with rotation on one hip: • Go down in a Dead Lift position on 1 leg. Maintain balance and alignment. (Img 9414) • Come up and rotate the opposite hip forward and around towards the side you’re standing on. (Img 9416) • Return to the starting position.

Laurette Maritz and Cecilie Lundgreen play 101 golf holes in one day Ladies European Tour golfers Laurette Maritz and Cecilie Lundgreen completed 101 holes of golf in a single day last month to raise money for their charity, Eyes for Zimbabwe. It was a crazy challenge but at 4am, when it was raining and still dark, the professional golfers hit their first tee shot at the picturesque ‘Borregaard GC’ in Sarpsborg, Norway. By 7.38am they had completed 36 holes and they were halfway there with 50 holes done by noon. They finally finished in just over 12 hours. Laurette said: “We did 100 holes today in 12 hours and in such weather, but we feel like we could start again! Thank you for being with us. We are going to play one more just because we can! Laurette and her coach Reeve Nield started the charity in 1996 after meeting a 12-year-old girl who had cataracts. At the cost of just $20, surgery was performed and she could see again. Laurette commented: “What we would like to say is: we are so excited to be able to do this for Eyes for Zimbabwe and the people of Zimbabwe. We know how they struggle and how much they need and this is the least that we can do to be able to raise money to help these little children and these older people who have cataracts, so we want to say, thank you for supporting us and we are very grateful.” July/August 2012

England Golf Enjoys Surge in Participation The number of people in England playing golf at least once a week is up by over 69,000 compared with six months ago. The surge in popularity is shown by the latest figures from Sport England’s Active People Survey and reflects a growing national enthusiasm for sport as the London Olympics draw near. For the first time, more than 15 million people in England, aged 16 and over, are playing sport once a week, every week. That’s 500,000 more than six months ago and 1.3 million more than in 2005/6 when London won the Olympic bid. Golf is among 21 sports which have shown a positive trend over the past six months and the results indicate that the long-term, downward trend in golf participation may be reversing. The sport is reaping the benefit of the work of the England Golf Partnership (EGP) and its network of County Golf Partnerships which reach out at grass roots level to attract new golfers and returners to the game. Roger Moreland, the Partnership’s chief operating officer, welcomed the results and said: “Golf is heading in the right direction. The results are encouraging and reflect the hard work of all those working within the grassroots game. “We have responded to earlier, disappointing results by understanding the needs of golfers and developing improved plans to keep people playing regularly. But there is still more work to be done, particularly to encourage young adults.” The EGP is a partnership of England Golf, the new amateur governing body which represents both men and women, and the Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA). It is supported by the Golf Foundation and funded by Sport England. John Petrie, the chief executive of England Golf, commented: “Sport England funding has played a crucial role in the ability to generate new participants into golf and these results show that golf is using that funding to good effect. “We must not be complacent and the wet spring and summer brings its own challenges, but these results show that the structures and initiatives in place are working and starting to bring results.” Sandy Jones, the chief executive of the PGA, remarked: “I was delighted to learn of such a significant increase in the number of people who are enjoying golf on a regular basis. “I know our PGA professionals in clubs and golf ranges throughout the country work really hard to encourage more people to enjoy the game and these numbers give evidence that this hard work is producing positive results for their efforts.”
Nicklaus announces China initiative The Nicklaus Companies announced the formation of Nicklaus-China, a partnership with a leading Chinese company that will aid in the strategic, comprehensive and responsible growth of golf in China by assisting developers with a unique opportunity and “turnkey solution” to golf course and residential development. The venture will also explore business opportunities outside design and development that involve Jack Nicklaus and the Nicklaus brands. Participating in the signing was Nicklaus and Dr. Guang Yang, Chairman and CEO of Finergy Capital, a private equity firm based in Beijing and the new partner in Nicklaus-China. In 2010, Dr. Yang, in a partnership with Hainan Airlines, acquired Pasadera Country Club. Pasadera represents the first Nicklaus-China collaboration. Pasadera has already been positioned as a hub and platform for US-China business relations. The Nicklaus-China venture will operate out of Beijing, and the office will be home to both Chinese and American executives with decades of international experience in the golf industry, ranging from golf course design, development, construction, sales and marketing, agronomy, and operations management. 80

South African Women’s Open back on global schedule The South African Women’s Open will make its return to the international women’s golf circuit for the first time in three years when the tournament tees off at Selborne Park GC in KwaZulu-Natal from 13-15 July. South Africa’s oldest women’s professional golf tournament has reclaimed its place on the Ladies European Tour (LET) calendar, and will feature the country’s leading professionals competing against a strong international field for a total purse of R2.7 million. The tournament will be co-sanctioned by the LET and the Women’s Professional Golf Association of South Africa. South African number one Lee-Anne Pace has already confirmed her place in the field, while Tandi Cuningham returns as the defending champion, having won the last South African Women’s Open in 2009. “I am extremely proud that the South African Women’s Open is back on the schedule and that our leading professionals can once again have the chance to compete against the world’s best on home soil. And I can guarantee that we will do everything we can to make sure the trophy stays in South Africa,” said Pace. The Ladies European Tour’s return to South African fairways ensures a strong contingent of international players, each of whom would be hoping to become only the seventh foreigner to win the South African Women’s Open. “It is an honour for us to be able to host the first South African Women’s Open in three years. KwaZuluNatal is a strong golfing province with a wealth of wonderful courses. It’s also appropriate that in 2010 the province hosted the men’s South African Open, and now we are welcoming the women.” July/August 2012

Clarke to receive PGA Recognition Award Open Champion Darren Clarke will receive the PGA Recognition Award at this year’s annual PGA Luncheon in London. The Ulsterman, who was due to receive the award last year, follows in the footsteps of other Claret Jug winners Sir Nick Faldo, Tony Jacklin and the late Seve Ballesteros in winning the award which celebrates his outstanding contribution to the game of golf. Clarke will pick up the accolade on Friday, December 21, at the Grosvenor House Hotel which stages the PGA annual charity fundraiser which among others helps the PGA Benevolent Fund supporting PGA members in times of hardship. “We had considered Darren for this award long before his Open triumph because he had already made an immense contribution to golf,” said PGA chief executive Sandy Jones. “His outstanding success in becoming Open Champion in 2011 meant his commitments prevented him from collecting this award last December but he is delighted to be able to receive it this year and we look forward to welcoming him as guest of honour at the lunch.” Clarke’s impressive career includes five successive Ryder Cup appearances while in 2003 he became the first player apart from Tiger Woods to capture more than one World Golf Championship title.
