Pros, ammies and kids love Soweto Golf Cup
22 PGA of South Africa and 5 invited Sunshine Tour professionals teed it up in the pro am on Thursday under cold and windy conditions. Local businessmen, club members and dignitaries including 87 year old struggle veteran Andrew Mlangeni who gave a wonderful prizegiving Speech also participated. With the assistance of co-sponsors City of Joburg the course was presented in its best condition. 22 PGA of South Africa and 5 invited Sunshine Tour professionals teed it up in the pro am on Thursday under cold and windy conditions.
We spoke to Nethunzwi who said after he made birdie on 4 he was filled with a wonderful feeling of confidence and knew he was going to “go deep. He then birdied 5 and 9 and made 4 birdies on the trot on 12,13,14 and 15 on the back nine.

“ It means a lot to me to win at home in front of my home crowd. My parents sister and cousin were there and the Soweto club members were also supporting me. It really was great to win at home.”
After 2 rounds Jannie Botha was leading the field on level par 140 with Michael du Toit 1 shot back. In perfect conditions on day 3 Travis Frazer brought in a 66 and Heinrich Bruiners showed he is returning to form with a 65 but it was all Musiwalo Nethunzwi who came storming through the field with a 6 under par 64 to take the tournament by 2 strokes from Bruiners.
PGA pros also coached 100 juniors in a Grow Golf zone. Using the successful formula from the Grow Golf Zone at the Telkom PGA Championships a series of fun athletic challenges that aim to teach the kids fundamental skills were set up.

Kudos to San Lameer San Lameer, one of South Africa’s very first Golfing Estates experienced some turbulent times in the recent past and a succession of gaffes meant that they had to replace their greens. Renowned golf course designer Peter Matkovich whose first appointment was San Lameer back in 1990 was tasked with replacing the greens and getting the course back to its former glory. The course was reopened earlier this year and Louis & I were recently fortunate enough to be invited to experience the golf course and to have a look at exactly what San Lameer offers the discerning golfer and holiday maker.

ituated on the beautiful KwaZulu Natal South Coast with its sub-tropical climate, San Lameer is on the southern side of Southbroom. Roughly 700km from Johannesburg (via Scottburgh), 144km from Durban and 180km from King Shaka airport, it is a 169 hectare nature conservancy, landscaped with 620 privately owned luxury villas surrounding the demanding 18 hole golf course, and a world class hotel. The Estate leads onto the pristine Marina beach which has blue flag status.
The golf course San Lameer was already an established resort before they decided to build the golf course. The course then had to fit in between the villas and sensitive indigenous forest in a low-lying floodplain and as a result many of the greens, tees and fairways were raised and built above the floodplain. Water therefore is abundant in the area and the course is laid out to maximise this and the wetland forest.
Out on the course the reformation of the greens has been outstanding and whilst they will take some time to settle they are likely to become amongst the best in the province.

At 6100 meters the course is not the longest but narrow fairways and the aforementioned water means that you have to manage your game carefully.

Feeling a bit rusty it was decided to hit a few balls at the driving range prior to teeing off. The small, well appointed driving range offers a nice way of warming up and on the way there we happened to see one of the Crowned Eagles that have become such a talking point at San Lameer (see Crowned Eagles below). 8

But it is principally the resident breeding pair of Crowned Eagles that has introduced the estate to wildlife observers as far afield as world-renowned raptor authority, Professor William Clark of Texas University.
Regarded as a “threatened” species, breeding pairs of Crowned Eagles in the wild are believed to number only 105 in South Africa at present. The current pair of raptors took up residence in their San Lameer Pine tree 9 years ago. For the past 5 years they have annually produced a chick and nurtured it to independence. In July and August of 2012 they rebuilt their nest in the same tree but in a fork about 1 meter higher than it had previously been. Over the years the eagles appear to have become totally impervious to both the human and service traffic activity in the area of their nest.
Regarded as a “threatened” species, breeding pairs of Crowned Eagles in the wild are believed to number only 105 in South Africa at present. Increasing deforestation north of our borders has destroyed their natural habitat, driving the birds progressively south. Indigenous cultural myths have also identified Crowned Eagle claws as having medicinal powers, making them targets in rural communities. Crowned Eagles are second to only the Martial Eagle as the Continent’s apex raptors and are calculated to have a crushing strength of some 800 pounds per square inch in their claws.

A basic understanding of the rules of the game obviously contributes to the enjoyment. As far as noise is concerned, tennis requires the audience to be quite on serve and with cricket the noise is constant. Full concentration is required on each shot in golf and as such the crowd keeps quite at that time. A sudden distraction would contribute to the player hitting an errant shot and perhaps striking a spectator. It is testament to the behavior of golf spectators then that this happens so infrequently. New PGA Captain Takes Office Long-serving PGA Professional Neil Selwyn-Smith has taken on the prestigious role of PGA Captain – following in the footsteps of golf legends Max Faulkner, Sir Henry Cotton and Peter Alliss. The honour comes as the Birmingham-born professional celebrates a career in the golf industry spanning 50 years. Selwyn-Smith, who was 67 last month lives in Bromsgrove, succeeds Eddie Bullock and is relishing the prospect of taking on the role after spending the last two years as captainelect. “I love the game and it encompasses so much that is good in the human spirit,” said SelwynSmith, who officially took on the two-year role at Friday’s Annual General Meeting at The PGA’s Belfry headquarters at Centenary House. “The last two years as vice captain have been very interesting and I am looking forward to being an ambassador for The PGA and my fellow PGA Professionals.” May/June 2013
Selwyn-Smith, a PGA Master Professional, began as an assistant professional at Cocks Moor Woods Golf Course, in Birmingham. He spent 15 years at Edgbaston Golf Club, the majority as head professional, where he was among the pioneering professionals to embrace overseas golf trips. He designed Henley-in-Arden Golf Course and latterly ran a successful corporate travel company including annual excursions to The Open Championship. Currently, Selwyn-Smith is a PGA Tutor and also lectures on the Applied Golf Management Studies degree, run jointly by The PGA and University of Birmingham. He is also secretary of the Warwickshire PGA – a role he held many years ago.

Affirmations are what you constantly say to yourself about yourself, so be carefully what you say because they might become true. This is done mostly on a subconscious level and you believe these opinions to be the truth about yourself. These beliefs can be self-destructive and defeat the choices that you make. These are known as limiting belief structures and hold you back from what you are potentially capable of achieving.

Creating affirmations are about becoming aware of how you talk to yourself. It’s about recognising that often these opinions you have about yourself need to be re-considered. It’s about consciously recreating how you see yourself and how you wish to be in the World. It’s about believing that you can change the way you think; you can be as successful as you wish to be! Play the golf you really, really can by self affirming. Affirmations are the language of successful effort and must be worked on diligently. It may take less than a month to change an aspect of your swing but to reprogram your limiting belief structure may take around six months to start showing a positive, consistent change. Affirmations are key phrases that remind you of who you need to be to deliver your optimum performance. You determine your actions by what you say! How you say you are is what you become. Affirmations become self-fulfilling prophecies. Tell yourself a lie often enough and you’ll begin to
believe it! So lie to yourself if you have to about how great and successful you are. Champions delude their sense of reality under intense pressure and create only the reality they wish to see. You could imagine in any pressured situation being back at your home chipping green or hitting towards your 150 target on the range as opposed to being in the reality of the competitive environment. Do affirmations in the present infinitive tense. You don’t even need to believe in them on a conscious level. Speak them out rhythmically and make them catchy. Repeat them regularly and consistently. Tell your close friends and family members what your affirmations are. Say them out loud. Scatter them throughout your daily life. It is important that you are relaxed and in a clear frame of mind when doing your affirmations. Where thought flows – matter goes…

Andre Cruse het die mylpaal bereik en vertel ons ’n bietjie meer daarvan. Die nostalgie was in oorvloed toe Andre reggemaak het vir sy eerste bof-hou by die Telkom PGA Kampioenskap vir wat sy 500ste toernooi op die Sonskyn Toer was. Hy het gesê dat dit nog altyd ’n mylpaal vir hom was en dat dit lekker was om dit te kon bereik. Hy was bewus van die opkomende mylpaal maar was onseker of hy ooit daar sou kon uitkom. Die 47 jarige Cruse het al 14 toernooie gewen in ’n ongelooflike 26 jaar op toer. Maar hy erken self dat die mees gedenkwaardige tye nie altyd die oorwinnings was nie. Andre sê nog altyd dat hy 15 toernooie wou wen, maar hy haak op 14 vas vir die afgelope 13 jaar. Daar is baie herinneringe, soos toe hy verloor het teen Richard Sterne in Zambia. By dieselfde toernooi het hy 2 jaar in ’n ry ’n “hole-in-one” behaal! In 2001 en 2002. Hy het op beide geleenthede ’n motorkar gewen. Min gholfspelers kon al ’n mylpaal so merkwaardig soos 500 toernooie behaal, en Andre kan net glimlag as hy terugkyk oor die jare op toer. Die herinneringe sluit 110 top-10 resultate en 3098 voëltjies in, gepaardgaande hiermee was daar ook 100 arende en 24 “holes-in-one”. Hy het ook gesê dat hy al lang trane gehuil het, lekker gelag het en groot vreugde ervaar het, en gaan steeds terug vir nog. Dis in jou bloed en dis hoekom hy by 500 uitgekom het, het hy gesê. Dit het hom ongelooflik baie van homself geleer en hy het ’n diep waardering daarvoor. En daar was nie ’n beter plek vir die merkwaardige mylpaal om plaas te vind nie. Hy het gesê dat dit verseker meer spesiaal voel om dit op sy tuisbaan te kon behaal, maar dat hy dit nie so beplan het nie. Dit was bloot net ’n welkome wending van die noodlot danksy ’n gebreekte toon. Ten spyte van sy roemvolle loopbaan tot op hede het Andre ook gesê dat hy uitsien na nog ’n paar jaar op toer voor hy finaal sy stokke sal ophang. "Ek het wonderlikke mense en borge wat tans betrokke is met my en ek is hul ambassadeur en speel ook gholf met hul kliënte, hulle weet wie hul is – duisend dankies aan ieder en elk. Ek het wonderlikke mense ontmoet deur gholf en ek is baie dankbaar daarvoor. Ek kon my droom voluit leef", het Andre gesê. Hy het ook gesê dat hy besef dat dinge in ’n mens se lewe verander, maar hy kan nie verby die feit kyk dat hy lief is vir die spel nie, en wanneer mens lief is vir iets kan jy dit nie net laat gaan nie. Hy sou graag die spel 15 jaar terug al laat vaar het as hy kon want dit is ’n spel wat ’n mens kan irriteer en wat ’n mens kan haat vir ’n oomblik of twee, maar dan staan hy weer die volgende oggend op en kan nie wag om weer uit te gaan en sy passie te gaan uitleef nie. Hy is tans besig met Voorgee (gholfprogram op Kyknet), in hul 4de seisoen wat die 3de Junie begin uitsaai. In die eerste episode spring hy uit ’n vliegtuig uit, so moenie vergeet om in te skakel nie. Hy doen ook TV werk (wat hy terdeë geniet) vir die Pro Shop wat op Super Golf wys vanaf April af. Hy sê ook hy kan nie wag vir die Seniors Toer oor 3jaar nie. Hy voeg wel by dat hy nog nie 47 voel nie, net as een van die jong knapies die bal 80meter verby hom slaan, dan besef hy sy ouderdom haal hom in:-) Ons almal hier by SA Golf Trader wil vir Andre ’n groot dankie sê vir Kuier Saam met Cruse oor die afgelope 5 jaar en sien baie uit na al die artikels wat voorlê. Leverage – make it effective By: Roger Wessels and Jan Fourie (Biokineticist) Using levers (in this case your arms) and creating leverage is how speed is generated in the golf club but understanding how to make leverage effective allows one to control distance, particularly when chipping.

Too much or too little leverage (wrist cock) in the backswing has an effect on the natural flow of the clubhead through the impact area which can lead to a poor strike, poor distance control and difficulty controlling ball flight. Have a look at the pictures as an example where in picture 1 too much leverage has been created for a chip of 15 metres which can result in deceleration through impact causing duffs, thin shots and the occasional decent shot. The example in picture 2 shows there is too little leverage for a distance of 30 metres resulting in compensations made by inefficient body movements through the impact area again leading to inconsistent results. There are 3 planes of human motion: 1. Saggital Plane: Forward and backward, like bending from the hips. 2. Frontal Plane: Side-to-side, like sliding the hips from right to left. 3. Transverse Plane: Rotational, like swinging a golf club or baseball bat.

From the above, you can see that movements in a good golf swing take place mostly in the Transverse Plane. There will be some movement of the hips from right to left to transfer body weight – for a right handed golfer - but power is generated through rotation of the hips and torso. In rotational movements the speed of movement is determined by the amount of power generated at the centre (core) and the distance of the moving object from the centre. The mechanics are different when hitting long versus chipping. In chipping there is much less influence from the hips and leverage is controlled more through what the wrists are doing. By cocking the wrists one creates more leverage, requiring more power and acceleration to bring the club head to make good contact with the ball at impact. At point of impact the club head speed will be greater than when swinging with the same power but a straight wrist. In order to control your chipping distance and be consistent, a golfer must therefore be aware of the wrist position throughout the swing. Try the following. Head out to your practice chipping green and hit a few balls, with no wrist cock in the backswing, with the intention of landing the ball 20 metres away. Then gradually introduce a little wrist cock until you discover how much wrist cock you need to comfortably land the ball 20 metres away. You will find your rhythm and contact improving with a little practice and your results will become more predictable.

East Rand golfers shine on Glacier Junior Series Renowned South African businessman Larry Nestadt and his 90-year-old father shared a lifetime of golf memories as they drove to Benoni Country Club for the Larry Nestadt Tournament on the Glacier by Sanlam Junior Series. The tournament was the first in Gauteng on this year’s series, which features 25 events played nationwide. And a total of 83 junior golfers travelled to the East Rand to tee it up and try and qualify for the National Finals later this year. In the A Division, Modderfontein’s Marco Hugo Steyn won by two strokes with a score of 69, which remains the joint lowest score recorded in this division on the series this year. But the true value for the juniors on the day was seeing Nestadt, who was born in Benoni and went on to become one of the founders of Investec Bank and his father speak about the longevity that golf can offer. Nestadt is one of several industry benefactors on this year’s Glacier Junior Series who have channelled their passion for the game into supporting junior golf. May/June 2013

Christiaan Bezuidenhout takes the WP Stroke Play Final 24 April 2013 - Christiaan Bezuidenhout made a couple of clutch putts to clinch the WP Stroke Play on the 4th play-off hole to defeat the country's top player, Haydn Porteous. Bezuidenhout took the third round lead with an amazing round of 63 and along with Porteous and NJ Arnoldi made sure it would be a 3 player shootout for the title. The opening nine saw Bezuidenhout and Arnoldi reach 14-under-par while Porteous made a number of errors to trail by 2 shots. Arnoldi took the lead in the final nine before a couple of dropped shots from nowhere saw him trail Bezuidenhout. Porteous got going with impressive birdies on 12 and 13 - both he and Arnoldi trailed Bezuidenhout by a stroke playing the final hole - the par 5, 18th. Both Arnoldi and Bezuidenhout hit poor drives, leading to bogeys, while Porteous could not up and down leaving him tied with Bezuidenhout on 14-under-par, 274. The play-off commenced on the 10th where Bezuidenhout missed a 10-foot putt for the title. On the second hole (18th) Bezuidenhout made a great putt for birdie to keep the play-off going. After both parred the 3rd hole it was off to the 18th again in fading light. Bezuidenhout hit his second over the green while Porteous ended in the hazard left but was just playable. Both players did well to get their shots to around 10 feet but Bezuidenhout held while Porteous touched the hole but stayed out. 28

Well, not exactly – but Mossel Bay’s Pinnacle Point Beach and Golf Resort is currently celebrating two important milestones: the caves in the cliffs below the clubhouse have recently been declared a Provincial Heritage Site (that’s where the 164,000 years comes in); and the club’s been recognised as one of the ‘Best of the Best’ in Compleat Golfer’s 2012 5-Star Golf Experience Awards. “The Pinnacle Point Caves have revealed the earliest evidence for modern human behaviour,” said Carl van der Linde, the manager of the Pinnacle Point Homeowners Association, which owns the resort. “According to the scientists of the Mossel Bay Archaeology Project - which has been studying evidence from the caves since 2000 - this is where man first began systematically harvesting the sea, using ochre for colouring, making complex tools with tiny stone blades, and using fire to improve the quality of stone tools.” The archaeological site – which dates back 164,000 years - was discovered in 1997 when Jonathan Kaplan, the director of the Agency for Cultural Resource Management, and Peter Nilssen were working on an archaeological impact assessment as part of the EIA process for the proposed development of Pinnacle Point. “Over the years, the massive significance of what they found has become more and more apparent, and the aim now is to have the Caves declared a World Heritage Site,” said Carl. “But they had to get Provincial Heritage status as a first step in the process.” He said that Dr. Nilssen will soon begin taking small groups of visitors to see the Caves. “They’re protected by law because of the sensitive nature of the material there. “But it’s important to make them accessible to people who are interested in the origins of modern man.” 30

Sally Little supports the eradication of breast cancer Sally Little is involved with both junior and amateur golf development in South Africa. Sally’s course design boasts of Kingswood, her signature golf course on the Garden Route. She enjoyed a successful 30 year career on the LPGA tour, winning 15 titles including two Majors. She continues to compete on the Legends Tour, the women’s senior division of the LPGA, of which she is a founding member. Most important to Sally today is her passion for breast cancer causes. Through her own foundation, as well as through her role as Global Ambassador for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, she supports awareness, research, treatment and the eradication of breast cancer.

Knysna Golf Club We recently visited Knysna Golf Club and were impressed with the new clubhouse which we had not yet seen. For those who don’t know on January 13, 2010 a fire broke out. Thankfully there were no injuries, but the entire clubhouse and its contents were destroyed within an hour. A few weeks later, a pre-fabricated temporary clubhouse was erected on the 1st tee and this served the club well for both golfing and social functions for the next year or so. The official opening took place on April 15, 2011 – just 15 months after the fire. The clubhouse is now one of the most stylish, modern and well-equipped in the country and stands testament to the dedication, imagination and sheer hard work of the club’s committee, members and contractors.

The history of non-European golf, back in time to 1960
T
he Port Elizabeth Non-European Golf Club was granted the courtesy of the Walmer Country Club and the Redhouse Golf Club courses to play the 1960 Non-European E.P. / Border Championship. There were so many competitors from all over the large district that two courses had to be used. Two qualifying rounds were played, 18 holes over each course, and then the final 36 holes was played over the Walmer CC course by the 50 leading qualifiers. Considering that the golfers all played normally on courses with bad fairways and sand greens, their scores of between 79 and 85 were excellent. "All who watched marvelled at their style, dress, etiquette and courtesy". So wrote Mr B Gregory, secretary of the Walmer CC, who added that "his committee voted it a great pleasure to have them on the course". A letter of thanks was received by the Walmer CC from Kenneth Gwaxula (secretary) and Reginald Schultz (President) of the PE Non-European Golf Club: "Dear Sirs, Of all the Eastern Province Non-White Championships that have been played in the past, none can surpass this year's meeting. For this great measure of success we say many thanks to the Walmer Country Club. It is really true that in sport one speaks one language irrespective of what nationality to which one belongs. Today, most of our major tournaments, in all sports, are played on European fields. It is most pleasing to note the eagerness of Europeans to promote the standard of sport amongst Non-Whites. We are not prophets but we dare to predict that very soon sport, and only sport, will bring about mutual understanding to South Africa's different races". May/June 2013

Gounden
almost pulls off sensational win Aneurin Gounden of Mount Edgecombe Country Club surprised a lot of people by making it to the final of the SA Boys’ matchplay, where he lost to Zander Gous in a thrilling battle last month. Gous needed an extra hole to defeat Gounden.
“Aneurin was an incredible opponent and I have to congratulate him for his tenacity and spirit,” said an elated Gous afterwards. At the tournament, which was played at Benoni Country Club, Gounden was described as ‘unheralded’ and while that may be true, he has in the past shown glimpses of his talent. He has also been a member of Mount Edgecombe’s premier league team and so knows a bit about going head-to-head. He is certainly an exciting talent to keep an eye on. 44

Gilson clinches Durban CC’s strokeplay title The strokeplay championships at Durban CC has jokingly been referred to as one of the province’s ‘majors’. With a field of 74 in the A division you can see why.

urray Gilson emerged as the winner on a two-day score of 147. On a windswept weekend, he carded 73 at Durban CC and followed it up with 74 at Beachwood the following day. “Everyone was surprised,” he laughed afterwards. Although he had not yet won either of Durban CC’s two main trophies, there wasn’t a player in the field who did not believe he could win.

The win means Gilson’s chances of representing the club at the World Golf Club Champs at Nine Bridges, South Korea in May are pretty good. “The matchplay winner is an automatic, plus one more, so we’ll see what happens there,” he said.

he Norwegian was declared the winner of the South African Women’s Open on Sunday after yet another brutal day of weather on the South Coast. With only the first round having been completed on Friday before the rain hit, the tournament was always under pressure to beat a freak run of weather. Saturday’s play was completely washed out. Sunday allowed for a few holes of play before first the rain caused a suspension, and then gale force winds hit the course. At around 16:00, with the forecast for Monday showing equally strong winds, the Ladies European Tour and tournament promoters took the decision to declare the winner based on the first round scores alone. Skarpnord’s three-underpar 69 was therefore good enough for the win. South Africans Ashleigh Simon and Stacy Bregman, Finland’s Minea Blomqvist, England’s Charley Hull, Sweden’s Camilla Lennarth, America’s Katie Burnett and German Nina Holleder all shared second place on tow-under-par 70. “It’s not the way we all would have liked to end the tournament, but we all understand how difficult the weather was. It was a very challenging week for everybody,” said Skarpnord. South Africa’s Kim Williams finished as the leading amateur following her round of level-par 72, earning her the Jackie Mercer Trophy.

Golfers demand firm and fast The world of the elite American private clubs is a rarefied environment. Members of such clubs pay, by the standards of most of the world, enormous fees for the privilege of playing courses conditioned to exquisite standards and off-limits to virtually everyone but themselves and their guests. But, according to Mike Leemhuis, chief operating officer of one of the most elite of those clubs, Congressional CC, just outside Washington, US club golfers are a more varied bunch than might appear the case. Congressional, with a ten year waiting list, several Presidents among its former members, and a tournament history that includes four Majors and an annual PGA Tour event, is among America’s leading clubs. Rory McIlroy’s spectacular US Open victory there in 2011 is just the latest time the club has been in the spotlight. And the level of conditioning expected at such clubs, and for such events, has been highlighted by a number of commentators as being a key problem for golf courses with fewer resources.
Leemhuis stresses he’s not talking about US-style parkland layouts looking like a browned-out links in a hot summer, but that his members want the courses as firm as they can sensibly be. “We have creeping bentgrass fairways and greens, so you can’t stress it to quite the same extent you can with fescues on a links, but it’s not true that a little bit of brown means the grass is dying,” he says. “The key is to show the improved playability, and to help the members understand that the grass is still fine.”
Those in the industry who have been trying to get golf clubs to embrace a more traditional, sustainable model of greenkeeping often complain that the problem is golfers themselves, who demand uniformly green courses, and greens that are soft and yielding. But, says Leemhuis, the evidence from Congressional suggests otherwise. In fact, he says, once players have been exposed to fast and firm conditions, they don’t want to go back.
Other key trends that Leemhuis says he’s seeing include the generational divide. “Longer life spans mean that clubs are being challenged to serve the needs of multiple generations, which may not be the same, in a way that has not been the case in the past,” he explains. The ageing of golf club memberships is a well-known issue, but Leemhuis points out it isn’t that simple. Yes, average age is increasing, and yes, clubs need to focus on recruiting new members, but they can’t do that by changing their culture in a way that risks alienating the older members, who are likely to be active to a much greater age than has been the case in the past.
If clubs at Congressional’s level are embracing the fast and firm mantra, and more importantly, if the golfers like it to the extent that they complain when the course isn’t firm enough, then the implication is obvious. If green and lush became popular because ordinary club golfers wanted their courses to look like the ones they saw on TV, then firm and fast can become popular in the same way.
Finally, Leemhuis notes, as do many other commentators, that a family-friendly approach is vital to attracting new members and getting more play out of existing ones. “We need to improve our service to all family types,” he says. “That could, for many clubs, include the provision of child care, and it certainly includes special programs for children and for women.”

The beautiful Clarens Golf Estate was the venue for the 2013 Free State and Northern Cape 54 hole Championship. The course had been lengthened for the Championship Division and with the fairways having suffered from the recent heavy rain, preferred lies were allowed. After the mornings first round Helena Buitendag (Gauteng North) was in the lead shooting an excellent 4 under par 68, closely followed by Gina Switala (Gauteng North) and Nicole Garcia (Ekurhuleni) on 69. In the afternoon Nicole mirrored the first round by shooting another 69 giving her a total 138, giving her with a four shot victory over Gina Switala on 142, who in turn was only one shot ahead of Monja Richards(Mpumalanga)and Helena Buitendag both on 143. 56

NORTH WEST GOLF EXCELLS North West Golf participates in seven tournaments during a year, against all the other provinces and have done exceptionally well in the last 12 months and boast with 5 of the 7 trophies as champions – a first ever! North West won the B-section of the U/23, the midamateur (over 35’s), the senior’s (over 50’s), the super-seniors’ (over 60’s) and the country districts tournaments. Stephen Allen (Potchefstroom) has also moved up to the 7th place on the National Junior Order of men after ending top 5 in all of the last four national events. He also just won a Glacier tournament in Witbank. The Far West Open which was just held was won by Aubrey Beckley (Potchefstroom) on 139, followed by Danie van Niekerk (Lichtenburg, 140), Wade Jacobs (Klerksdorp, 141) and Renaldo Schoenveld (Potchefstroom, 142). Thlolego Pule (Leopard Park) won the B-section on 71 points, whilst Pat Sefodi (Rustenburg) won the mid-amateur section. Bruno Schoenveld(Potch) won the senior section. 58

Golf and fresh water game fishing On the border of the Kruger National Park lies Kambaku Golf Club. A fantastic 9 hole golf course with probably the best views in the country of not in the world. But is not all about golf here, the Komati River is home to numerous species of fresh water fish. The most famous of these species is the Tiger Fish, due to its supreme game fish status as Africa's best fresh water fighting fish. There are various well positioned spots all along the river front for keen anglers! Komati River Chalets holds access to most of these spots but arangements can be made at reception.

he ‘Tiger Fish’ is the name generally used to refer to a variety of fish species of the genus Hydrocynus. Native to Africa, the Tiger Fish is located in scores of rivers and lakes throughout the continent. There are two major species of the African Tigerfish, the Hydrocynus vittatus Tiger Fish is the second most famous species. It can grow to up to 33 pounds, and is common in the southernmost areas of the African continent. Biologically referred to as the Hydrocynus vittatus, its naming is a literal combination of the English phrases ‘water dog’ and ‘striped’. It is common in areas around the Okavango Delta, Zambezi River, Crocodile and Komati River systems. This variety is a fierce predator characterized by a long slender shape and a forked caudal fin. Although its scales can be appropriately described as large, iridescent and silvery; sometimes they appear to have a golden cast. This Tiger Fish has a colorful appearance ranging from light to dark shades making this species fascinating to look at. However, fish that live over sandy bottoms seem to have a much lighter appearance. 62

Other species that can be caught in the Komati river are Mozimbique Bream (Blue Kurper), Red breasted bream, Mudfish, Catfish and carp. Gous claims historic SA Boys Championship ‘Double’ Mpumalanga’s Zander Gous achieved a rare “double triumph” when he lifted the SA Boys Championship Match Play title at Benoni CC a mere three days after he claimed the Stroke Play title at the same venue in April.

he 17-year-old Piet Retief golfer emulated Stephen Waltman (1990), Martin Maritz (1995), Richard Sterne (1999) and Dylan Frittelli (2008) to become only the fifth junior golfer in the 25 year history of the event to win both titles when he defeated Aneurin Gounden from KwaZulu-Natal at the first play-off hole in the final. But, in sharp contrast to his unchallenged stroke play victory, Gous was made to work hard for his historic achievement in a titanic battle that lasted 37 holes by the unheralded Mount Edgecombe golfer. Gous held the outright lead midway through the first 18 holes of the 36-hole final and led again at the halfway stage of the second 18 holes, but each time the young gun looked to have the victory sewn up, Gounden mounted a spirited challenge to extend the match. “I’m thrilled with the victory and achieving the double means a lot to me, but I can honestly say that having him as an opponent has made this memory more special. This was the toughest and most rewarding 37 holes of my career and his fighting spirit makes this victory incredibly special.” Gous took early command of the match with birdies at the first and third holes and certainly looked like the player to beat when Gounden dropped successive shots at the seventh and eighth.

The Piet Retief golfer birdied the par-five ninth to go to 5-up, but after the turn, Gounden regrouped and gave Gous a glimpse of the battle that lay ahead. The KwaZulu-Natal golfer began chipping away at his opponent’s lead with birdies at the 10th and 12th holes and an eagle at the par-five 14th. After another birdie at the 16th, Gous was just 1-up and Gounden levelled the playing field with yet another birdie at the par-five 18th. Gous quickly forged ahead with a birdie at the 20th hole and was 4-up after bogeys from Gounden at the 22nd, 24th and 25th holes. The Mpumalanga player bogeyed the next hole and both Ernie Els & Fancourt Foundation members birdied the par-five 27th. Gous led 3-up going down the back stretch, but Gounden dug in again and hit back with three successive birdies. Gous pulled his tee shot and after declaring a lost ball and reloading, was forced to concede the 28th hole when Gounden made birdie. The KZN golfer birdied the 29th and 30th holes to square the match and the pair matched each other in pars, birdies and bogeys over the next five holes. Gous birdied the par-five 18th but Gounden answered by knocking in an eight-footer for birdie and the pair set returned to the par-five first hole for a third time. In the sudden-death play-off, Gous split the fairway and his second pitched three meters from the pin. Gounden pushed his drive right and his second shot crossed the fairway . The ball nestled among some trees left and short of the green. He punched out, but his third shot overshot the green, while Gous lagged his first putt just inches from the hole. Gounden’s chip finished well short of the flag and Gous sealed the victory when he popped in the winning putt. “It was such an epic battle, and after all the excitement it was almost an anti-climax when it ended,” Gous said. “I’m still so wound up, I think it will be a while before this will all sink in.” May/June 2013

First National Mid-Amateur joy for Fourie Josef Fourie locked down his first national Mid-Amateur title with an impressive wire-to-wire victory in the Free State & Northern Cape Mid-Amateur Open at Vaal de Grace last month. The popular Hoopstad golfer carded an opening six-under-par 66 for a one shot lead on the Saturday and claimed the Volvo-sponsored event by two shots from Ekurhuleni’s Tyrol Auret and Rowan du Preez with a closing two under 70 on a winning total of eight-under-par 136. The former professional was absolutely delighted to lift his first silverware on the national Mid-Amateur circuit. “I have won a lot of Mid-Amateur tournaments in the Free State, but I have been knocking on national level for so long, that I really thought it would never happen,” Fourie said. “I actually stopped counting my top 10 finishes, but if you consider that I’ve represented South African on Mid-Amateur level and made the team three years in a row on merit, you can do the math. “It’s a great feeling to finally lift a trophy. It kind of confirms for me that I do have what it takes to win and now I just want to go on to bigger and greater things.” Fourie shot from 12th to third in the South African Golf Association’s Mid-Amateur rankings, a jump that has further inspired the Free State golfer ahead of the Volvo-sponsored SA Mid-Amateur Stroke Play Championship at Stellenbosch Golf Club from 6-10 May. Gauteng North and North West victorious at SA U23 IPT Gauteng North was in ascendancy once more as they mowed down Limpopo 11.5 to 0.5 to claim the South African U23 Inter Provincial, while the North West province held off a charging KwaZulu-Natal to claim B-Section promotion at Nelspruit GC last month.
Team manager Johan Struwig said the victory was down to their incredible team spirit.
In the four earlier rounds of the tournament, Gauteng North defeated the Western Province 8.5 - 3.5, downed Southern Cape 6.5 - 5.5, beat defending champions Central Gauteng 7.5 - 4.5 and halved 6all with Ekurhuleni to top the A-Division log with seven points. Although their victory was virtually assured, the Gauteng North team were simply superior against Limpopo as they claimed a clean sweep in the morning foursomes and won all their afternoon singles, bar the final match where Limpopo number one Hennie du Plessis forced a halve against his opposite number, Teagan Gauche. 68

Central Gauteng back to winning ways at INDWE SA Senior IPT Central Gauteng scored a clean sweep to record their eighth title in the 25th INDWE SA Senior Amateur InterProvincial in the last decade, while the Western Province claimed a historic hat trick the Super Senior Division at Euphoria Golf Estate. Central Gauteng won the country’s largest national seniors team competition in 2002 and 2003 and dominated the event from 2005 to 2010 after KwaZulu-Natal collected the title in 2004. Their winning run was halted by the Western Province, who claimed both the Senior and Super Seniors titles at Parys Golf Club in 2011. Both Province sides retained their championship titles in Durban last year, marking the first time that any provincial side has won both titles in consecutive years. But this year, a strong Central Gauteng side denied Western Province the chance to make it three-in-a-row in Limpopo after the team defeated all seven teams campaigning in the Seniors A-Division to collect the full 14 points on offer and the title again. From start to finish, Stuart Till, Richard Bruyns, David Stratton, Gavin van Aswegen, Schalk Naude, Jock Wellington and Lawrence Franklin delivered a commanding performance at the tricky par-72 championship layout in the Waterberg mountain range, which was designed by former world number one Annika Sorenstam.
Dlamini defends Sanlam SA Women's Amateur Stroke Play title "Nobuhle is a serious champion," said Cynthia Rayner, president of Women's Golf South Africa.
Nobuhle Dlamini successfully defended her Sanlam South African Women's Amateur Stroke Play title with a crushing 12-stroke victory at Pretoria CC last month.
"She's dominated the game ever since she moved to the top of our rankings, and she's such a worthy champion because she's so hard working and disciplined."
Dlamini took a two-stroke lead into the final round and was never challenged as she closed with a two-under-par 70 for a winning total of three-over-par. It was one of the most emphatic victories in the history of this championship, cementing Dlamini's status as the South African number 1 and world number 3 in the women's amateur game. Dlamini also became only the sixth golfer since 1969 to have successfully defended her title in this event. May/June 2013
Dlamini has already expressed her desire to turn professional later this year and take up a place on the Ladies European Tour before moving to the LPGA Tour. Golf tourism has further increased in 2012. According to IAGTO’s 2013 Golf Tourism Report, recently published1, global golf holiday sales grew by an average of 9.3% compared to the previous year, and their member operators2 alone catered for 1.6 million golf travellers in 2012, with golf holiday sales exceeding an estimated EUR 1.5 billion. Most tour operators were also positive about the future, with the vast majority expecting further growth in the years to come. In order to provide a reflection of golf tourism trends in today’s challenging economic environment, KPMG’s Golf Advisory practice undertakes the Golf Travel Insights survey among international golf tour operators every year. Golf bookings in 2012 The trend in golf bookings still looks positive, with 57% of the surveyed golf tour operators having experienced an increase in the number of golf trips3 in 2012. Less than a fifth of the respondents reported a decrease in bookings. These results were very similar to our findings for 2011, which suggests a continuous recovery in the business along with the overall economic revival from the financial crisis. The typical length of golf trips remains 4-7 night trips, with an average share of 56% of all bookings. The rest is equally split between short trips of 1-3 nights and those longer than a week. This is in line with our findings in previous years, indicating little change in the average length of stay. About 40% of all bookings were group bookings in 2012, typically by groups of 4-6 and 8-12.

Most popular destinations The most popular destinations continue to be Spain and Portugal, followed by Scotland, and, interestingly, Turkey, which has pushed closer to the top of the list, showing an impressive development in recent years. Other increasingly popular destinations include Thailand and Vietnam in Asia, while Italy and Bulgaria are emerging golf tourism hot spots in Europe.
Golf tourists and their expectations The biggest golf travelers are still the Brits, the Americans and the Canadians, although often choosing domestic trips. Scandinavians (mainly Swedish), Germans and Austrians are also near the top of the list, with a strong interest to travel abroad for golf. Golf tourists have become more price sensitive in recent years, and the cost of a trip has become the key decision making factor when choosing a golf trip, according to our survey. Nevertheless, golfers still care about the quality of courses and related accommodation facilities, and require more value for money. Pricing Based on our survey, a weekend’s golf trip, including accommodation and green fee but excluding flight, can be accessed for less than EUR 300, but usually costs between EUR 300 and 600, depending on the destination. Four to seven night trips are also available from EUR 300 and up, but typically cost EUR 600-900. Those who travel for longer than a week should budget around EUR 1,000-1,500, with some luxury golf trips costing as much as EUR 5,000. Similarly to last year, package prices have remained stable according to more than half of the respondents, while 35% of golf tour operators have recorded an increase. Prices have typically gone up in Thailand, Vietnam and Turkey. In other destinations there was less consistency – some suppliers have increased while others have decreased prices.

• Born on August 6, 1904 he was a prominent PGA Tour golfer of the 1920s and 1930s. After he retired from competitive golf, he became a well-regarded instructor, even into his 90s. He passed away on October 17, 2000. • Born in the town of Leatherhead, England, his father was a professional golfer who had served as an apprentice to Old Tom Morris at St. Andrews. His mother, Alice was also a golf professional, a very rare career for women in that era. • He might be most remembered for his near misses in the game's biggest events. A perennial U.S. Open contender (with seven top-10 finishes and second place in 1927 and 1936), he played in the inaugural Masters Tournament and placed second there in 1936 and 1938. He reached the semi-finals of the 1925 PGA Championship. In all, he finished in the top-10 19 times in major championships. • In later years, he would say that he had a mental hang-up during major tournaments and couldn't picture himself in the winner's circle. • Lee Westwood is the only other male professional golfer who has a comparable record of repeated success at the major championships without yet winning one. • He was nicknamed "Lighthorse” for his quick pace of play in winning the inaugural Los Angeles Open in 1926. • In the 60s & 70s, he was the Director of Golf on the Oceanic Cruise Liner. Dylan roars to victory at Big Easy Roodepoort Dylan Frittelli romped to his maiden win at Roodepoort GC last month, carding a final-round 67 for a three-stroke victory at the R100,000 Sunshine Big Easy Tour tournament presented by Stonehage. "Winning feels great. It was good, not only to win, but to put in a good performance and shoot 67 today. I'm really glad to get that monkey off my back and win one, especially so early in the season," he said. The 22-year-old held the overnight lead after carding a bogey-free 65 on the first day, and continued to dominate during the final round, finishing three strokes clear of runner up Callie Swart. "Callie had a great final round shooting 64 today," said Frittelli. "He really pushed me coming down the stretch and I would have been far more nervous playing the last four holes if I didn't have a one or two-shot cushion!" With his Big Easy cheque in hand, the future star from Johannesburg was excited about his chances of taking the Big Easy Order of Merit, and added: May/June 2013

Tandi on Tour In this month of Tandi on Tour, I am going to give the reader some insight into the nontournament time and preparation that Tour Players go through in order to peak their games, both mentally and physically for the events they play. It is the time spent in the off-season that more often than not, determines the success of a playing season. Planning, preparation, effective practice and rest time are all crucial to keeping both the players mind and game sharp, allowing the player to feel refreshed, motivated and ready to perform.

Planning:
Tournament preparation would not only consist of the obvious elements of practice, playing and working on all aspects of one’s game, but also getting the mind ready and sharp for a competitive environment. Most players get to point within their own games where they understand their swings: what works and what does not under pressure. They have an understanding of their own personal strengths and weaknesses as well as an understanding of strategy and course management. The real determining factor that will produce the most consistency, both reflected in the golf swings and scores, is the mental approach and preparation. I cannot place enough emphasis on the importance of laying down a good and solid mental foundation for competitive golf, irrespective of your ability as a player or handicap. Even on the poorest of ball striking days, a truly incontrol player will be able to hold together and grind out a decent golf score. The ability to produce a good result irrespective of weather, bad bounces,
The tournament schedule for a season is normally released straight after the final event of the current season, in this case that would be the Dubai Ladies Masters in December. The first events on the new schedule start in Australia in the last week of January, giving players 4 weeks before the new season kicks off. The factors that affect the choice of which events to play would be based on whether or not the course, conditions, set up and playability suit a player. Sometimes a player will choose not to play some events in order to peak and to get in more preparation for other tournaments. So in essence, we are talking about quality of performance over quantity of playing. The Ladies European Tour schedule is not particularly jam packed like other tours however it is still possible to feel burnt out playing too much or too many events in a row. My strategy for this season is to play fewer events; play the bigger prize funds to make it more financially 82

poor swings and ‘unlucky’ breaks lies singularly within the golfer’s attitude, approach and belief structure, all factors that are purely mental. For the most part mental training does not come easily or naturally, yet whether we choose to acknowledge it or not, every single day, in everything we do, we are in fact training our brains and belief structure. With this is in mind, it is so fundamentally important to be aware what we say and how we criticise ourselves. We all need to learn to speak to ourselves in practice and on the course, in the same way the world’s best caddy would, with encouragement, support and positivity. Human beings are inherently negatively creatures and it is constant battle to find a positive outcome to every situation. If a golfer is in control of their state and mental faculties, then he/she is in control of their golf score. If you control your mind, you control your body and then the possibilities are limitless. Effective Practice: Very closely linked to good tournament preparation and mental training is how we practice. Beating balls for hours might seem like the most obvious thing to do yet practicing for hours on end, mindlessly hitting balls is actually highly ineffective for producing scores. In order to get the most out of your game and your practice time, irrespective of how much time you have available, is to train smart. Training smart means doing a good training session on one aspect of the game for no more than 90 minutes working on 2 aspects: first half would be working on technical errors or drills, finding a good feeling that the player can trust in their swing. The second half of the practice session should be to perfect your shot routines and hit at targets, creating a pressure environment. When we are on the course, we only have one chance at a shot. On the range we
can always reach across to our pile of balls and just hit another one after we have hit a shot that does not come out how we wanted it to. This never happens on the golf course, you only have one go at a shot so this is how we should train. Train the way you want to play. However much time you have available to practice, use it wisely. Dedicate half of your training time to working on technique and areas of weakness and spend the second half playing full routine shots at a target, imagining there is a bunker or water hazard. Practicing in this way will guarantee that the quality of your shots on the course will improve and therefore your scores. Rest Time: Most social golfers will think that rest time does not apply to them and only to the Pros who play fulltime, sometimes playing 6 rounds a week for months on end depending on the schedule, but it does in fact apply to everyone. Rest time for the pros would be time spent away from golf and training in the off season or in between events even if a player is in form, more so if a player is in a rut with their performance. Time away gives the player the chance to reflect, be more objective and also devise future plans or make changes. Sometimes when a player has lost form, of any skill ability, and starts to find the game frustrating or un-enjoyable, it’s time for a break. I found that after my last event at the end of the season, I would take a full month off to relax, gym and do things that I normally don’t get a chance to do. After roughly 3 weeks I start getting very keen and excited to start training again and that enthusiasm is what you need to stay motivated and keep having fun. We do after all play golf to have fun and de-stress!

Simon on the road to recovery It has been three months since top South African women’s golfer Ashleigh Simon underwent hip surgery, and the 23year-old is working harder than ever to regain her top form. Simon is currently limited largely to chipping and putting, and she only recently started hitting balls with a half swing. “I’m well down the road to recovery,” she said. “The surgery was a success and the game is coming along slowly, but my surgeon did warn me that it would be three to six months before I could play again. In January, three months sounded like nothing, but having reached that mark, I would have to say that it is doubtful that I’ll return to competitive golf any time soon.” Simon, for so long the flagbearer of the new wave of young talent in South African women’s golf, admits to feeling frustrated by her situation. “I was told in August last year that I would have to have the hip surgery, and the news came as quite a blow. I had this constant ache in my hip and down my leg, but I was able to manage it with physiotherapy. I had just started to play really well in Europe when I had to quit, so I was rather resentful about going under the knife, but at that stage I was also getting daily cortisone injections to cope with the pain. “In hindsight, it was probably the best thing that could have happened to me. Not just sorting out the hip problem, but it was the first time that I actually took some real time off from the game since I was 13 years old.” Simon is no stranger to injury comebacks over the last few years, and is once again doing her best to remain patient. “I’m obviously frustrated that I have to work through this process, when all I want to do is get out there and play. I’m working hard with my coach to get my game back. I’m doing far more gym work than I’ve ever done before to get fit. 84

I’m also working with a sports psychologist. I don’t think I’ve ever been as mentally tough and prepared as I am now. “I will have a pretty full schedule once I start playing again because I have to play a minimum of 11 events. My main goal right now is to get into fighting shape, so I am able to challenge for victory in every event I tee it up in when I go back on Tour.”
News flash: Ashleigh participated in the South African Woman’s Open that was held at Southbroom GC in mid April and finished tied second in the rain affected tournament. Only two weeks after she could make a full swing and while her doctors doubted her ability to play, her coach, Doug Wood, certainly felt she was ready. “She has got such a strong mind. Adam Scott wins US Masters Adam Scott became an instant national hero when he won the US Masters, snapping one of the country’s great sporting hoodoos. The 32-year-old Queenslander ended decades of near-misses and heartbreak for Australians at Augusta National when he defeated 2009 champion Angel Cabrera of Argentina with a birdie at the second hole of a sudden-death play-off.

cott showed nerves of steel to sink the winning putt from 12 feet out on Augusta National’s 10th hole, after Cabrera left his birdie putt almost on the lip.Scott became the 10th Australian to win a men’s major and the first since 2006, when Geoff Ogilvy won the US Open.
He is also the first Australian to win the Masters. His countrymen have famously finished second outright or tied second eight times in the past Scott himself tied for second two years ago. It was sweet redemption for Scott, who in last year’s British Open surrendered a four-shot lead with four holes to play and finished runner-up to Ernie Els. ‘‘I don’t know how that happens,’’ said Scott after his win at Augusta National. ‘‘It seems a long way away from a couple of years ago here and even last July when I was trying to win another major. ‘‘It fell my way today. There was some luck there 88
somewhere. I don’t know how to digest it at all at the moment but it was incredible. It’s incredible to be in this position. I’m honoured.’’ Prime Minister Julia Gillard said all Australians would marvel at Scott's achievement. ‘‘By any measure this is a historic day for Australian sport,’’ she said. ‘‘Adam, Australia is incredibly proud of you.’’ Earlier Scott holed a seven-metre birdie putt on the last hole of regulation play to shoot a closing three-under-par 69 and finish at nine-under-279. But 43-year-old Cabrera nailed his approach shot at the 18th, putting it within a metre of the hole and matched Scott’s birdie to tie with him, with a round of 70. Scott’s countryman Jason Day finished outright third, two shots back after a closing 70. Day had stood on the 16th tee with a two-shot lead but leaked home with two bogeys.

Scott and Cabrera returned to the 18th for the first play-off hole. After piping drives down the middle Scott fired into the green first and was short, sucking the ball back off the green. Cabrera couldn’t respond, producing an almost identical shot but both made par to send the play-off to the 10th. Both men hitting the green in regulation, Cabrera left himself about 15 feet tothe hole, while Scott was left with a 12 footer for birdie .
Cabrera’s putt settled on the edge, giving Scott the stage. He flung his arms in the air in a flood of emotion when his putt rolled in. Scott credited "incredible support" from the crowd for his compsure on the 18th hole and in the playoff. "They wanted me to do something... I didn't want to disappoint. It was a great feeling. I felt they were really pulling for me."
