PGA NEWS PGA holds last Level 1 Golf

Coaching course for the year

The PGA of South Africa’s will be hosting the final level 1 coaching course for the year on the 17th and 18th of November.

T

he PGA of South Africa’s will be hosting the final level 1 coaching course for the year on the 17th and 18th of November.

The course is tailor made for the school golf coach. It is based on the PGA’s long experience of coaching and educating coaches and uses the Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) Model as its grounding theory. LTAD has gained much recognition worldwide in recent times as a way of understanding child development and what it takes to become either a world class athlete or a player for life. The PGA SA Level 1 course both looks at this theory and shows the coach how to present it to pupils. Attendees are also taught about safety and how to plan and evaluate a golf coaching session and are presented with a swing coaching theory that is recognized by PGAs worldwide. The course is 1 ½ days duration and then attendees are required to complete an assignment or pass a practical exam in order to achieve their level 1 certification. SASCOC (The SA Sports Council and Olympic Committee) has laid out the ground rules for the National Coaching Framework and has also adopted LTPD as its coaching philosophy. The PGA level 1 course and grow Golf Coaches Association fits with the National Coaching Framework’s vision. Graduates of the course are eligible to join the Grow Golf Coaches Association of South Africa. Members of the GGCA qualify for a level 1 coaching licence which is renewable annually. For further information visit the PGA of SA’s website on www.pgasa.com or the Grow Golf Coaches Association website on www.growgolfcoaches.co.za or contact Andrew Gunn at the PGA of South Africa on 011 485 1370 or andrew@pga.co.za

Dear Editor

Dear Gary Thank you for writing in and with regards to such an important subject. Gary Player once referred to a famous survey that asked Olympians whether they would rather win a gold medal and die within 10 years or go on for the rest of their life and not win gold. Eighty percent of those surveyed said they'd rather win the gold and die. There is an incredible level of devotion in sport that makes cheating an option for those who are prepared to take the risks. And that is where I think we can improve the situation; we need to make the “risks” much higher. The consequences for cheating have to be severe. Lance Armstrong should be ostracised (along with all the other drug taking cyclists). Any person caught cheating in sport should be stripped of all the glory and rewards that they attained whilst we were ardently supporting them. They must never play a part in sport again and children must grow up with the knowledge that if you have cheated in sport then you have committed a cardinal sin. I do not believe that it is an exaggeration to say that the future of sport is at stake if we do not find an answer! Regards

Congratulations to Gary – you have won a weekend getaway to Mabula Game Lodge. 12

Golf Assessment Program for any player aspiring to progress up a level in the game.

Take responsibility for your Mental Management in Pressure Situations! How you handle stress out there on the golf course is dictated by an intricate mix of your genetic disposition, various influences from people of authority throughout your life and moments of experience that define you as the golfer you are. Paul Cuningham PGA Qualified Teaching Professional at Zebula Golf Estate and Spa.

Like fundamentals of the golf swing, if there is something wrong with it - fix it! There is a logical sequence to this; we start from the basics and progress towards more advanced techniques. The mind is a muscle that needs to be worked on just like your golf swing but it may take a little longer to see results, so be patient. BELIEF STRUCTURE is like your “GRIP” with regards to mental management. Take a seat and write down the answers to these: Do you truly believe in yourself and your ability? Who are you as a golfer, as a person (what are your values)? To know these questions you have to know where you have come from and who has influenced you to this point? Write down five good qualities about your Mom, you’re Dad and your siblings (or any-

16

one that was influential in your life)? Then name five poor qualities about them? Where do you fit in the pecking order? Now think of someone you admire greatly and why? Name five great qualities of this person? Are you truly a success driven person? Do you review where you are mentally at different phases in your game and do you work on your belief structure at all? On an external level, what beliefs do you project in your actions towards others? Do you have any strange mannerisms? Do you speak clearly and with authority? Are you genuine, believable to others? What is your attitude like out there? If any answers are negative in nature, highlight them in a negative colour and if any are positive, highlight them in a positive colour. Do the same for the sections that follow. At the end of it all, look at the amount of positive or negative colour that represents you, enjoy the positive and look at transforming your negative self. STATE MANAGEMENT is the equivalent of “ALIGNMENT” in your mental management basics. Do you remain calm under pressure? Do you know how to breathe correctly under pressure?

Are you in control of your heart rate? Do you have a lot of brain activity (chatter) going on when playing your shots? Are you in control of your bodies’ mobility & functions under stress? How do you carry yourself physically out there on the course; eye’s on the horizon, shoulders back, chest out and a positive gait or the opposite? Once again take note of the negative answers but also enjoy any positive feedback! The final fundamental to your mental management is like your “POSTURE or STANCE”, it gives you your grounding; it’s your TENSION MANAGEMENT. Do you entertain positive or negative thoughts before you play your shots? Are you wise when making strategic decisions? Clear about what you are to do? Are you decisive in your decision making? Do you reflect your tension on the course through aspects like pulled in shoulders, tight hands or forearms, clenched jaw or crossed arms, even squinted eye’s etc? Where ever you hold tension needs to be acknowledged and dealt with! Have you ever hit balls with your tongue sticking out (check your rhythm improve with this drill), putted with a relaxed jaw or just let your hands, arms and shoulders just hang like chains before you swing? Contrary to popular, conditioned belief, we are actually capable of controlling these three mental disciplines. It just takes a little bit of self-awareness and then the dedication to implement your positive self, tension free and without limitation.

This brings me to my final few points and a new way of thinking in this mentally progressive golfing era. Breathe and contemplate this statement, “NO GOALS – NO PRESSURE” Goals are a distraction out there to the path you are already on. They create a weight of expectation every time you go out and ultimately put more pressure on your success. We all know you wouldn’t have entered the event if you weren’t capable of winning it! “NO DISTRACTIONS”, in order to engage a state of flow or keep your routines on propose. Your routines are your life-line out there, especially under pressure. If you could engage into making the most perfect routines in your tournament play, from the first shot until your last and could learn to switch off your burn rate between these shots, then your scores would be a perfect reflection of your true ability and would aid in a more peaceful acceptance post your rounds. As your ability improves, so will your scoring potential and ultimately the “OUTCOME BECOMES IRRELEVANT”. This new way of thinking will go a long way towards freeing you up through impact, the ultimate way to let go and let the shot just reveal itself… Are your ROUTINE’S consistent, reliable and effective, to short or to long and do they flow seamlessly from beginning to end, distracting you from negative thought? Let me check it out for you and guide you in the right direction? Expand the POSITIVE and diminish the negative…

As julle eedag ’n draai by Fred gaan maak, vra dat hy julle die storie vertel toe Tony se maats agter gelaat was.

TUITION SPECIAL & INSTRUCTION FEATURE

Your

Shoulder’s Responsibility By: Roger Wessels and Jan Fourie (Biokineticist) Our last article was about hitting the ball long but wouldn’t it be great to hit it straight….as well! Most golfers strive to get the clubface back to square at impact but many struggle to do so due to poor posture and/or poor scapulae stability. Good functionality of the Shoulder Girdle is crucial if one wishes to play good golf; but what makes up the Shoulder Girdle?

Roger Wessels – Golf Director KeNako Golf & Sports Academy

E

xperience shows that when working with either shoulder rehabilitation patients or professional sportsmen, most people only think of the actual shoulder joint as the area requiring treatment to relieve symptoms or improve performance of the shoulder girdle. This perception exists mainly because the shoulder joint is the area where most symptoms like impingement or “Rotator Cuff Syndrome” occur. The head of the bone of the upper arm (Humerus) fits into the “socket” (Glenoid fossa) of the shoulder blade to form the shoulder joint (Gleno-humeral joint). But the reasons for poor mobility of the shoulder joint often lie in another area of the shoulder girdle that is often neglected in conditioning programs - stability of the Scapulae (shoulder blades).

20

www.sagolftrader.co.za

November/December 2012

TUITION & INSTRUCTION

Poor posture can cause lack of rotation in the upper body resulting in the dreaded chicken wing (loss of distance and direction) and poor scapulae stability makes it very difficult to rotate your arms in sequence with your body movements during the swing which often leaves the clubface open or closed to your target at impact. Correct rotation of your arms during the swing assists in keeping the clubface square through the hitting area, creates extension in the follow through and very importantly allows your momentum to work towards the target at impact. The Gleno-humeral joint is the most mobile joint in the body, allowing movement in every direction. It is not the most stable joint in the body due to this great mobility. The joint needs to be stabilized by the surrounding musculature (Rotator Cuff ). The great mobility of this joint can also be lost if the Scapulae are out of position. Poor scapulae stability cause impaired shoulder joint space and prevents the Humeral head from rotating freely which causes injury to the tendons on the joint space area. Functionality of the shoulder girdle is therefore mainly determined by the Stability of the Scapulae! The Scapulae are kept in position and rotated by muscles like the Serratus Anterior, Lower Trapezius, Rhomboid and Sub-Scapular muscles. Bad posture, poor setting of the scapulae and abnormal rotation of the Humerus can be brought on by imbalanced weight training programs and poor training technique which can do enormous damage to the shoulder joints. For this reason it is extremely important to get professional advice before starting an upper body conditioning program in the gym. Consult your Biokineticist to learn about proper training techniques that will help improve your performance and prevent injuries. The above are by no means the only considerations when trying to get the ball on target but good posture and stability in your shoulder blades will allow you to deliver your clubface at high speed square to target producing those long and straight drives.

Nationwide Development Centres Announced at 2014 Ryder Cup Venue The Scottish Golf Union (SGU), Scottish Ladies’ Golfing Association (SLGA) and ClubGolf announced the roll out of 50 Scottish Golf Development Centres over the next three years aimed at bringing out the best in the nation’s aspiring young players. Launched at The Gleneagles Hotel – host venue of The 2014 Ryder Cup – the Development Centre programme will use existing clubs and facilities which meet specified criteria, and will provide access to additional high quality coaching and advice for those youngsters progressing from the early stages of ClubGolf. The Development Centres are being funded by reserves from ClubGolf Scotland, the national junior golf programme, and will be established in three phases, with 21 clubs and facilities having already been identified to tee off the programme from next month. Gleneagles, a major supporter of junior golf in Scotland and home to the PGA National Golf Academy– Scotland, is among the first Development Centres chosen. The selection of all centres in Phase 1 was based on the audit from this year’s Scottish Golf Facility Plan and local intelligence through the SGU Areas and SLGA Counties before the initial 21 were finalised. Kevin Cademy-Taylor, Scottish Golf Performance Development Manager, explains the rationale behind the establishment of the Development Centres: “The Development Centres are open to boys and girls, aged between 11 and 17, who have a club handicap. They will also bridge an identified gap between ClubGolf Stage 2 and our Academy. They will provide structured coaching opportunities for young players to help them reach their potential. “They will promote the improvement of a young golfer’s all round game, focusing on the fundamentals and skills development, with a particular focus on short game and putting. The facilities we have selected will provide an environment which will allow them to work on all these aspects so it’s not just about hitting balls on a driving range. “In addition, a series of educational workshops will be delivered that will allow both players and importantly their parents to gain a better understanding of Performance Development for Golf.” 22

Players within the new Programme will be entitled to 30 hours of golf coaching with expert advice (approximately 10 hours) on themes such as fitness, nutrition and psychology. Young players will continue to play the majority of their golf within their own club environment, alongside their own local coach. Andrew Coltart, the former Ryder Cup player and member of the SGU’s Performance Committee, was also on hand at the launch to offer his backing. “The Scottish Golf Development Centres will help more youngsters make the most of their talent,” Coltart said. “We have some great facilities here in Scotland so this gives us the opportunity to maximise them. I’m very encouraged that the coaching focus will be on the short game, given the high standards at the top level. “The success of the European team at last month’s Ryder Cup will undoubtedly be a great inspiration to all the youngsters in ClubGolf and the new Development Centres and it’s a very exciting time to be involved in Scottish Golf with the Gleneagles event less than two years away.” Stuart McEwen, Gleneagles’ Director of Golf, added: “Gleneagles is proud to be one of the first Development Centres to support aspiring young golfers to reach their potential. “As an official partner of ClubGolf, we fully endorse the programme in promoting life-long participation in the sport and encouraging juniors to be active members within their local clubs. “Our coaches are committed to delivering a quality coaching experience and we look forward to seeing the next generation of golfers develop their skills and progress in the game.” A legacy to Scotland’s staging of the 2014 Ryder Cup, ClubGolf is a direct result of the Scottish Government’s commitment to introduce every nine-year-old child in Scotland to the game by 2014.

McIlroy edges out Woods in Shoot-out Rory McIlroy outscored Tiger Woods for only the third time in 11 head-to-head encounters in China yesterday, winning their "Duel at Jinsha Lake" with a five-under-par 67 to the American's 68. The world's top two players met for a one-off match after competing in Shanghai and Kuala Lumpur over the weekend. McIlroy had been runner-up to his Ryder Cup team-mate Peter Hanson at the BMW Masters and Woods was fourth behind his fellow American Nick Watney in the CIMB Classic.Three weeks after Woods defeated the 23-year-old by six strokes at the World Golf Finals in Turkey, it was McIlroy who had the edge this time. He had two early birdies and turned two in front before Woods chipped in at the short 12th, but the American bogeyed two holes later and could not get back on terms. McIlroy said: "It was close the whole day. I had the better start, then Tiger started getting birdies on the back nine. I think it was pretty exciting for the fans and it would be great to compete more with Tiger like this – maybe down the home stretch in the majors. Woods said: "We actually both played decent golf. We left a lot of putts out there and we could have really shot some low numbers. This is certainly not like most Mondays. To have this many people come out is pretty special; we're ranked No.1 and No.2 in the world, so a match like this can really promote the game in China. I've come here for 11 years now and it's amazing how much the game has grown." On McIlroy, he added: "Over the past few years it has been great to see his growth. We'd be excited about a rivalry, but we'd want it to last for 10 to 15 years." 24

His share of fifth meant he moved from 23rd on the Challenge Tour Rankings to 15th and became eligible for one of 20 cards on the 2013 European Tour available to players from the Challenge Tour. So he comes home to South Africa, jumps straight into the ISPS Handa South African Match Play Championship at Zwartkops CC and will be delighted in the security of not having to go through the trial by Qualifying School in order to campaign in Europe next year. He earned his spot at Europe’s main table with his performance in the Challenge Tour’s seasonending Apulia San Domenico Grand Final in Italy: It was a tournament which started with an unremarkable 71, which left him perilously low down in the 45-man field, but he rectified matters with rounds of 67-65-67 to climb the leaderboard and secure his card. It was the climax of a season which had looked as if it might peter out in disappointment in the two tournaments preceding the Grand Final – a missed cut in the D+D Real Czech Challenge Open and a lowly 26

share of 56th in the Crowne Plaza Copenhagen Challenge which earned him just €483. But his game turned, and his closing out in the Grand Final has boosted his confidence for the big summer tournaments on the Sunshine Tour. His eligibility on his home tour means he will get into the European Tour’s 2013 Race To Dubai openers in South Africa – the Nelson Mandela Championship and the Alfred Dunhill Championship in December – and solid home performances can set him up for a lengthy campaign in Europe. To campaign on the Challenge Tour in 2012 was a decision that could have led to heartache, but, for Walters, it was vindicated in his 21st tournament of the season.

PGA Tour to take control of Canadian Tour Expanding its brand reach and aiding its neighbor to the north, the PGA Tour announced on October the 18th that it is taking full control of the Canadian Tour. The conversion process begins on November 1st, and the new division, dubbed PGA Tour Canada, debuts next year. The merger hardly comes as a surprise, considering the PGA Tour had lent financial and strategic support to the shrinking Canadian Tour for the past year. The PGA Tour’s action is an investment not only to generate revenues from its expanded domain, but to strengthen its core product – by developing talent globally, and ultimately, funneling the best players to its primary stage.

Mirroring its recent decision to create another developmental tour, PGA Tour Latinoamerica, the PGA Tour will use its Canadian division as a “feeder” into the Web.com Tour. Beginning in 2013, the Web.com Tour will be the only avenue to gain status on the PGA Tour. Such “qualification tie-ins,” according to PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem, will lead to an “upsurge in the quality and the number of players” participating in Canadian Tour events and improve tournament marketability. That should help attract sponsors, which the PGA Tour will court by “leveraging its other properties and digital assets” – resources that the struggling Canadian Tour lacked. If successful, the PGA Tour stands to tap a vibrant golf market. Citing an economic-impact study, the PGA Tour reported that nearly 6 million Canadians play golf, representing 21.5 percent of the population – a participation rate that’s more than double U.S. involvement in the game. Canada also consistently ranks second only to the U.S. in traffic to PGATour.com. 28

ocated at the edge of the Kogelberg biosphere, nestled between the Hottentots Holland mountain range and the Atlantic Ocean, Kleinmond Golf Course provides a scenic challenge against a backdrop of spectacular fynbos.

Witness Southern Right Wales in season from any of the T-boxes and, with a bit of luck, watch the antics of the local baboon troop frolicking on the fairways. Tortoises also claim the greens as their home and an abundance of bird life makes for an entertaining round of golf. The 5,000 metre 10-hole course (par 70 rating) represents an ideal opportunity to spend a day in the country at a club which prides itself on its welcoming ambiance. In 2007 “The Complete Golfer” rated Kleinmond GC as the 3rd best 9-hole course in South Africa. The official opening of KGC took place on 8th January 1992, by the then prime Minister FW de Klerk, after a few dedicated golf lovers started planning and negotiating with local authorities in 1989. The old abattoir was transformed into a clubhouse. Since then many upgrades were effected, including the recent remodelling of the cloakrooms. Practice facilities such as a practice green and chipping area are available. Golf and pull carts are available for hire. Kleinmond Golf course is situated within an hour’s drive from Cape Town, and with Arabella, Hermanus and Theewaterskloof all within easy reach, a golf getaway in the Overberg is a worthwhile option. With plenty of activities in surrounding areas, those who prefer can enjoy the pristine beaches, shop at the quaint stores in Harbour Road, witness the penguin colony at adjacent Betties Bay, walk various trails up and around Hangklip, visit the wild horses in the Vlei or partake in a delectable meal in any of the acclaimed restaurants in Kleinmond, Betties Bay and Pringle Bay. A variety of guest houses and B&B's in the area will ensure you time in the country side is well spent. Visitors, new members, groups and corporate days are all most welcome. Mossel Bay markets itself as the ‘Do stuff ’ destination on the Western Cape’s Garden Route – which is why a visit to Pinnacle Point means a lot more than ‘just’ a round of superb and challenging golf (important as that is, of course). “Mossel Bay is unique because of its environment and its weather – and our tourism industry has made best use of these gifts by creating an unusually large number of attractions and activities,” said Mossel Bay Tourism’s Marcia Holm. “This means that if you’re coming for the golf, we can almost guarantee that you’ll stay for the beaches, the mountain biking, the aero-sports, the 4x4 tracks, the game viewing, and our culture, entertainment, and beauty- and wellness spas.” She said that Pinnacle Point is on track to becoming one of the South Africa’s premier golfing destinations now that Nic Grundtvig and Peter Matkovich have joined the management team: Mr. Grundtvig as the director of golf, and Mr. Matkovich as an expert consultant and advisor. “You need to know that this is a course that’s open to all – and that we have big ambitions for it,” said Mr. Grundtvig, who is currently the chairman of the Eastern and Southern Cape Region of the PGA, and also a member of the PGA’s national board. “The greens, tees and fairways are already in excellent condition, but Peter – who designed Pinnacle Point – has the knowledge that’ll get the

course into world class shape over the next couple of years.” For this summer, though, if you want to play – you’d better book soon. But be prepared. “Players are blown away by the sheer beauty of the golf course and the spectacular views it offers, which sometimes makes it difficult for them to play their best – but we strive to provide a fair test without making it an unfair challenge,” said Mr. Grundtvig. Pinnacle Point Homeowner’s Association general manager, Carl van der Linde, said that properties on the estate make excellent investments. “Some of them do come onto the market for time to time, but not everyone wants to buy: if you want to stay overnight - or even for a few months - there’s a managed rental pool which offers accommodation at very decent rates.” And once you’re in Mossel Bay, start exploring with Mossel Bay Tourism’s ‘Things to do’ brochure as your guide. “Pick it up at our information office, or download it from our site,” said Ms. Holm “You’ll see why Mossel Bay really is the ‘Do stuff ’ destination.”

PGA National Russia Opens The stunning course at the Zavidovo Resort threw open its gates to 350 prospective members including British Embassy officials, representatives from Gleneagles owners Diageo and leading businessmen and women from Moscow. Russia is an emerging market in golf and the PGA branded facility has been designed with a view to hosting professional golf tournaments including tour events in the future. In addition the resort has created exciting career opportunities for PGA professionals with more set to follow when the clubhouse is officially opened in June next year. PGA members are already involved at the resort, which is situated 100 miles north west of the Russian capital, with Phil Jones the golf operations manager, while Mike Braidwood is a consultant with Braemar Golf who manage the overall facility. Robert Maxfield PGA property and commercial director, who visited the course, commented:

“It is with great pleasure and pride that The PGA is able to associate its name with this impressive course that has the potential to be one of the best in Europe. “The team behind this project has delivered a world class golf facility, and is committed to developing the game in Russia. We are currently working together on a range of initiatives to encourage junior golf development and look forward to seeing increasing participation.” As well as being Russia’s first and only golf course to carry the prestigious PGA brand, the five-star facilities will include the new PGA National Golf Academy, consisting of a nine-hole golf course, putting and chipping greens, swing studios and a stateof-the-art teaching area. Jeremy Slessor, managing director of EGD, commented: “With potential for hosting European Tour events, the golf facility will become a landmark for Russian golf. UPGRADED GOLFING AT SAN LAMEER ESTATE The San Lameer Golf Course has recently received an upgrade of note from the reputable golf course designer Peter Matkovich. Now residents and visitors at the sought-after San Lameer Estate can enjoy playing a great game of golf, starting in December, on newly resurfaced greens. “While we’ve been resurfacing we have taken the opportunity to make some very subtle changes and have created more pin placements on the greens. We have also laid a new improved variety of paspalun grass called super-dwarf. I’m sure that golfers are going to be in for a pleasant surprise when they tee off,” comments Matkovich. At the beginning of the project Peter and his team implemented rigorous investigations and tests on the original greens which conformed to the USGA (United States Gold Association) specifications. “So when it came to resurfacing it meant removing 100mm of compost type material, refloating the greens, then fumigating and finally planting. We got on our knees and prayed for sun like a farmer prays for rain because the grass we planted is a warm season variety and only grows when the temperatures are warm,” Peter explains. Fortunately, his prays were answered and he is currently very confident 36

that there will be 95% coverage by the time the course opens. “This has been a very exciting project for me since our company has been contracted to maintain the entire course until the end of January 2013, which means that, besides the greens, we can now improve the playing surfaces of the tees, fairways and the rough. It has been a wonderful opportunity to take care of the whole course,” adds Matkovich. So, what can golfers expect from the newly upgraded San Lameer Golf Course? “Over and above the budget to replace the green surface we were also allocated a budget to blend in the green surrounds which has allowed us to get a much more natural and soft look on the green complexes,” he explains. Coupled with the stunning water features which distinguish the San Lameer Course, the glorious new greens should go down a real treat.

Rustenburg GC complimented with Bentgrass greens in 2012 This year all 18 holes of the course as well as the practice areas were complimented with Bentgrass greens. The decision to change the greens and plant bentgrass was due to the fact that their old greens had reached the end of their life span and the functionality of the greens had declined. The project started on the 1st March with the removal of the old greens and was concluded in August. They approved Top Turf to redo the greens as it is an area that requires expert knowledge and know how in order to gain the maximum from the project. Top Turf have a renowned record for being the best when it comes to turf management as they have done many golf courses such as the Gary Player Country Club and the Lost City Golf Course to mention a few. Top Turf has done an outstanding job and the greens have changed dramatically with all the reshaping and floating to maximise the pin positions for the greens. It is great to now have greens that role true and that will surely bring people from around the country to one of the best courses in the North West. With a river running through the course and the magnificent Magaliesberg Mountains in the background this is a course that challenges players of all handicaps. 52

The course boasts a remarkable green along the coastline, a driving range, 2 putting greens, 67 bunkers, a chipping arena and a large club house. Situated on the Turkish Riviera coast in the Mediterranean, the luxury resort will open in March 2013 and is nestled in the exclusive setting of a prestigious 18-hole Lykia Links golf course guaranteed to enthrall all golfers, irrespective of their handicap. The Belek region is very famous for another 11 golf courses, most of them cham-

pionship courses, such as TAT, National Golf Club, Cornelia Faldo. Club Med guests can book green fees on arrival to enjoy a varied golfing experience in the region. The resort is not only geared towards golfers so while you’re teeing off early in the morning, your partner can enjoy the other activities available at the resort like tennis and volleyball, wind surfing and archery or a treatment at the Club Med Spa by Carita. The kids can also have fun on the trapeze while being under the care of the Kids Clubs, giving you as much time as you need to perfect your swing.

The “Royal connection” of Hunters Rest The late George Wellington Rex (III), the founder of Hunters Rest was a very knowledgeable intelligent man and was given the right to practice medicine in the Rustenburg district by President Paul Kruger. He was born on 25th July 1840 in Knysna. George arrived in Rustenburg during 1884 and was a great hunter hence the name Hunters Rest. He was a pioneer of Rustenburg. He was the founder of the town of George in the Cape. He was sent to South Africa in order to save the Royal family the embarrassment as he was born from a morganatic marriage between George III and Hanna Lightfoot the fair Quaker. George Wellington Rex married Georginia Collins, the daughter of Admiral Collins of the Crimean War fame. They had ten sons and four daughters. Hunters Rest formed part of Paul Kruger’s farm Boschfontein and President Paul Kruger granted the land on which Hunters Rest is situated to George Wellington Rex. Hunters Rest Hotel: Prince Arthur of Connaught honoured Hunters Rest by his visit during his term as governor General of South Africa. George Wellington Rex passed away on the 28th March 1923. 54

easons Eco Golf Estate is situated only 45 minutes from Johannesburg, Pretoria and Rustenburg on the Northern slopes of the Magaliesberg Mountains. The Old Brits Golf Club was renamed Seasons Eco Golf Estate and redesigned by Golf Architects Matkovich & Hayes on the 300 acre estate development.

In the redesign of the 18 hole golf course (the closest ''Bushveld'' course to Johannesburg) the developers have given priority to the preservation of environmental standards so as not to compete with or compromise natural areas. The design plan incorporates islands and pockets of wilderness zones on and around the course with buffer strips of indigenous vegetation between the stands and the fairways. More dams and water features will be added, improving the habitats of birds, insects and other flora and fauna, and additional species of buck and other small game have been introduced. With it’s truly Bushveld atmosphere this parklands lay-out golf course will be a challenge to any competitive golfer. November/December 2012

NEWS CLIP

The rise and rise of Teboho Teboho Sefatsa has been touring without a win for nine long years, but all of that changed with his one-stroke victory at the BMG Classic on Sunday. “I’ve finally broken through and it feels fantastic. It hasn’t totally hit me yet, but I’m sure when I get home it will sink in. My career really takes off from here – this is where the hard work begins,” he said. It’s amazing what confidence does for golfers, as Sefatsa proved with his victory, which came exactly a month after he won the Big Easy Tour Order of Merit. “I’ve got to give thanks to the Big Easy Tour – I played the whole season there and it honed my game. I won the Order of Merit and it got me prepared for the second half of the season. I’m really grateful for that, and I’m chuffed that I could turn that success into a win,” he said. The 29-year-old plays out of Glendower and put local knowledge to good use on the back nine, keeping bogeys off his card until the 18th. His long run without a drop shifted all of the pressure to his chasers, who faltered under the strain. Merrick Bremner managed a final-round 69 to claim sole second at nine-under-par, while overnight leader Matthew Carvell shot a Sunday 71 to share third 58

with Desvonde Botes. But Sefatsa was paying little attention to his competitors on Sunday, focusing instead on his own game. “I wasn’t feeling the pressure until the final hole,” he said. “I knew I had one hand on the trophy and I just needed to put the other one on it. I was ecstatic after I made that last putt,” he said. That’s not to say Sefatsa was quiet during the final round - he roared through the front nine in 32 blows, courtesy of an eagle at the second and birdies at the first, seventh and eighth. It was a special day for the Germiston resident, who has been grinding without success for so long. And it was really a great kickstart to summer – Sefatsa automatically moves into category 3c until the end of 2013, which means he’ll have oodles of confidence and few worries going into the lucrative co-sanctioned events this summer. “Onto bigger things with more hard work, so I’ve got to keep going. The sky is the limit. Everyone has their turn – you just have to be patient and work hard – that pays off in the end,” he said.

New Mexican project for Woods firm Tiger Woods' much-delayed design career may finally be up and running. Woods' firm, which has seen its first three projects, in Dubai, North Carolina and Mexico, either cancelled or put on ice due to the global economy, is in construction on a new project, at the Diamante Cabo San Lucas community, also in Mexico. Woods' project at Diamante, which will be called El Cardonal, will sit alongside the resort's first course, the Dunes course, designed by architect Paul Cowley on behalf of Davis Love III's firm, which opened in 2009. Construction of El Cardonal began in September, and is expected to take around eighteen months, implying an opening in late 2014 or 2015. “Diamante is a growing resort community that is already home to Golf magazine's 58th ranked course in the world,” said CEO Ken Jowdy. “We believe a Tiger Woods Design course will be the perfect complement to the Dunes course and will embody the high standards that we have set.”

“While the Dunes is reminiscent of a classic Scottish links, this is going to remind people of the oldstyle California courses,” Woods said. “We will use the existing arroyos that traverse the site and wellplaced bunkers to create definite strategic choices and carries off the tees." ” El Cardonal's bunkers are planned to have a traditional look while natural, irregular contours will be preserved in the wide fairways. “Regardless of your handicap, there are going to be different ways to play every hole. Angles of approach are going to be very important and will dictate the type of shots you should consider. I love this kind of golf,” said Woods. Elsewhere on the property, the 100,000 square foot Dunes clubhouse, which includes 20 two bedroom residences, is set to open on 10 November.

Ja rugby was definitief my eerste liefde en het begin speel toe ek 14 jaar oud was. Vandag moet ek hom seker dankie sê. 3. Thracian Cliffs to host World Match Play Championships The Bulgarian Black Sea resort of Thracian Cliffs has been announced as the venue of the 2013 World Match Play Championship as part of a new hosting concept for the leading golf tournament, introduced by title sponsor Volvo.

The last three editions of the European Tour-sanctioned World Match Play Championships were held at Finca Cortesín in Spain, with Belgium’s Nicolas Colsaerts winning this year’s event. However, Swedish automotive firm Volvo on Monday announced that the Championship will now rotate between a few host destinations, acknowledging the growing global appeal of golf while also serving geographical areas of interest for Volvo’s businesses.

We will announce future venues in due course and while our focus is firmly on delivering a magnificent 2013 Championship as our inaugural event at Thracian Cliffs, we then plan to rotate the Volvo World Match Play Championship between a few very special venues around the world of which Thracian Cliffs is the first.”

The 2013 World Match Play Championship will be played at the Thracian Cliffs Course from May 16-19, marking the first time a full European Tour event will be played in Bulgaria. For the 48th edition of the event Volvo and partner IMG will work closely with the Bulgarian government in conjunction with the national golf association. Bulgaria was named the undiscovered golf destination of 2012 by the International Golf Travel Market.

Central Gauteng crowned SA Mid-Amateur IPT champions The Central Gauteng squad invoked the same courage and team spirit that carried the European Team to a come-from-behind victory at the Ryder Cup two weeks ago when they lifted the 2012 South African Mid-Amateur InterProvincial title with a stupendous performance at Schoeman Park in Bloemfontein last month. An epic final round battle was expected between the frontrunners, tied for the lead on six points each, but KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Province wilted in the face of the gritty determination and fighting spirit the Central Gauteng side showed in scoring a runaway victory in country’s biggest mid-amateur team competition. “It was a fantastic effort from every guy on the team. They batted well from one to eight. The match was played in a great spirit between the two teams, but I don’t think I’ve never seen team spirit like my guys showed today.” In the final A-Section match, Ekurhuleni handed the Eastern Province a 9½ - 2½ drumming to finish fourth on the final log. KwaZulu-Natal placed second, the Western Province third and Boland

Golf wars Brought to us by KPMG’s Golf Advisory Practice

Sir Nick Faldo, Rio 2016 course designer Gil Hanse and HSBC’s Giles Morgan speak out on contentious issues at the KPMG Golf Business Forum As the Ryder Cup teed off amid raucous scenes at Medinah Country Club, golf business leaders were squaring up to critical issues facing the game – and speaking out on the state of sport. Gathering for the annual KPMG Golf Business Forum, just days before the Ryder Cup, HSBC’s Giles Morgan expressed his frustration at unregulated players’ agents demanding ‘unsustainable’ fees for their clients, Olympic golf course designer Gil Hanse weighed into the debate on sustainability in golf, and Sir Nick Faldo raised the possibility of mixed team golf at the Olympics.

Gil Hanse

Tournament golf & sponsorship – Giles Morgan, HSBC HSBC’s head of global sponsorship, Giles Morgan, bemoaned players’ agents demanding unrealistic fees, when the bank – which has spent more than $300million on golf sponsorship in 10 years, including the WGC HSBC Champions Event in China – has already put up the prize fund. “At the Ryder Cup we will see tournament professionals playing for free, doing lots of man hugs and high fives and getting right into it – and we, the public, love it,” he said. “But in the men’s professional game I think this sportsmanship and spirit is eroding. There are unregulated agents and players’ managers who are now asking for enormous fees for golfers to play in tournaments and sell their wares.” Giles Morgan continued: “The recession is not something agents are used to. What some of these agents are doing – not all, and they are not regulated, which is critical – is going back to a trough where they think the money is, and that means the tournament sponsor. As a title sponsor you pay for the prize fund, which is what the players win. When you are then asked to pay additionally, it feels like there is a biting of the hand that feeds – and I do not believe this is sustainable for the game of golf.” According to Giles Morgan, 32% of golf sponsorship comes from the financial services sector and that unlike some sports, golf is sponsor driven. 70

“Professional golf, like any sport, is the fuel and oxygen for growth, and nowhere has this been better seen than in China where, when we introduced the HSBC Champions event in 2005, we just needed to bring one golfer, Tiger Woods, along with 77 others. The publicity went bananas – he was the world’s greatest golfer and the crowds followed, and the tournament was a success. “The professional game has a massive responsibility for the whole game – it is the showcase and the catalyst. “Golf doesn’t have a divine right to succeed – it has to innovate, move forward, making its products become entirely attractive to outward investment.” Mr Morgan concluded: “There is a storm coming and I beg the game of golf to discuss and consider.”

Sustainability – the war over water Asked during a debate on sustainability what the priorities for golf are, architect Gil Hanse, selected to design the course for the Rio 2016 Olympics, said: “It’s all about water. It may force the hand of green golf – and I mean the colour of our courses. We’ve heard that, in the future, wars will be about water rather than oil. Ultimately, that will be the war that the golf industry will have to fight – the availability of water and constant restrictions, it will eventually tip our hand. Until then, we have to make the delivery of water more efficient, that’s the war we can fight behind the scenes, but it will be difficult to change the minds of golfers.” Hanse was responding to research indicating 72% of golfers in America want pristine fairways and greens. It was also in context of the statistic that more than 150 golf courses in America closed in 2011. Hanse explained that sustainability, brown fairways, a par-71 public golf course and the use of caddies instead of golf cars were all features of his blueprint for the Olympic golf course. “There were three pillars to our presentation – design, legacy and sustainability, explained Hanse. “We purposely made it a par-71, not the typical 7,400-yards par-72 championship course, as we wanted something that wasn’t the norm and would be in context of an emerging golf market. Our vision also encompassed a lot of brown grass. I’m sorry to see that statistic about golfers wanting green greens, but we felt that if the face of golf and the course in this Olympic competition, could be somewhat offcolour, as it will be Brazil’s winter time, the course would feel a little more links-like, something natural. We also talked about a walking course and trying not to have cart paths. The course is fairly flat and it should be easy to walk. Having caddies would help grow the game.” November/December 2012

While acknowledging the sport’s shortcomings, Hanse spoke boldly in golf’s favour: “Golf is an easy target. In the court of public opinion, golf doesn’t produce anything – we don’t produce crops. Yet, as an industry, we know we produce millions of jobs globally, billions of dollars of economic development, often tourism related, but we don’t do a good job of letting the public know that. All they think is that we are a bunch of rich, spoilt people with bad outfits hitting a ball around green grass. We need to prove that the golf industry is an important part of the economy, otherwise water restrictions will be much more easily placed on us.”

Olympic golf – Sir Nick Faldo Interviewed on-stage by CNN anchor Don Riddell, Sir Nick Faldo spoke candidly about his playing career and his business interests, and analysed the opportunity the Olympics offers golf – and the importance of creating entertainment and excitement on TV. “I hope we have time to consider the format for the Olympics,” said Faldo. “Personally, I was surprised that it was going to be 72-hole individual strokeplay. The Olympics is so much about the team, and we have the girls playing at the Olympics as well. We have mixed doubles in tennis, and there are mixed foursomes in golf, so it’s a question of what we could do. I hope it’s not too late to change the format – it’s still four years away. I think they need to sit down and brainstorm some ideas because we are in Rio for two weeks; we have our own site, so why not use it for the whole two weeks? I would like to see them make a decision to play a few more events.” Continued on p74

Continued from p73 As a golf commentator for the Golf Channel and NBC, Faldo said that he had come to understand the importance and influence of golf on TV as entertainment – and pondered whether different formats of golf could be broadcast to add excitement and interest: “Maybe there should be some events that are purely a show. What about a par-3 tournament? You could play a six-ball. It’s about putting on a golf show rather than a tournament so it entices people to watch golf and think, ‘Wow, this is really cool!’” Continuing on the theme of the way golf is portrayed on television, Faldo said: “If we get the players on board, and they know they are there to entertain, it’s great for them, great for their brands, and great for the sport. If they want to give something back to the future of their sport, it could be it even bigger and better in 10 years time, and a few of them understand that. “The younger players like Rory McIlroy and Rickie Fowler get it. If you look at what a Formula 1 driver has to do in terms of interviews before he sticks his helmet on and goes into the first corner

Rickie Fowler at 150mph, it’s a bit lame for golfers to say they can’t talk before going to play. But if you explain the importance to players, they will understand.” More than 220 delegates from 30 countries attended KPMG’s ninth annual Golf Business Forum at the Renaissance Tuscany Il Ciocco Resort & Spa, Italy, September 17-19, the golf development industry’s most important annual event of the year.

Sustainability and innovation are needed to grow the game Innovation and sustainability proved to be key recurring themes throughout the three-day conference with a special keynote speech from Twenty20 cricket creator Stuart Robertson, addressing how to drive participation in sport and linking directly to an enlightened panel discussion on sustainability in golf and ‘triple bottom line’ benefits – people, profit and planet.

A

mong the thought leaders speaking on sustainability were Jonathan Smith of the Golf Environment Organization, Dr Mike Parkin of Syngenta and Gil Hanse. Hanse revealed that his pitch for the 2016 Olympic golf course had three facets – design, legacy and sustainability.

“Sustainability was an important part of the presentation,” Hanse told the Forum. “We are creating something that may not be the norm in terms of a championship course – it is a par-71 course you can walk – but which will serve as a model for golf courses in emerging markets.” The conference was opened by KPMG’s Global Head of Innovation Adam Bates, whose fast-paced presentation on technological and geopolitical trends impacting on business was to echo the sustainability debate with predictions of the future scarcity of water and the need for golf to be clear on how to communicate its environmental credentials. “How do we tell the world that the lovely green grass we play golf on is sustainable from a water consumption perspective?” he challenged the conference. Giles Morgan, HSBC’s Global Head of Sponsorship and Events, presented the bank’s specially commissioned report ‘Golf ’s 2020 Vision’ detailing trends shaping the future of golf including the shift of influence towards Asia, increased feminization of the game, the sport’s adaption to technology, golf tourism and sustainability challenges.

Sir Nick Faldo joined CNN’s Don Riddell for a live on-stage interview and engaged in the debate on participation outlining how the Faldo Series, designed to nurture the next generation of champion golfers, is now active in 28 countries, and is set to expand into the world’s largest market, the United States of America, as well as countries such as Nepal. Faldo also questioned whether the proposed format for Olympic golf – 72-hole individual strokeplay – was correct, and suggested team golf could prove more popular. He even raised the possibility of mixed team formats, such as mixed foursomes, where both sexes play as partners. Opportunities for golf development in Italy and the Mediterranean was another key focus for the Forum, with KPMG publishing a new Golf Benchmark Survey for Italy (available to download free of charge from www.golfbusinesscommunity.com). While the statistics reveal that Italy is a market primed for growth, a series of speakers, including Italy’s most successful professional golfer and its first Ryder Cup player, Costantino Rocca, admitted the country is lagging behind both in golf participation and tourism, although hope was expressed that developments such as Sir Rocco Forte’s acclaimed Verdura Golf and Spa Resort on Sicily would lead the way for future tourist based developments. At this stage we are very happy with the results.”

s we wind down the year and head into the last few months of 2012, from October the Ladies European Tour now heads into the Asian leg of events through the next two months. Kicking off with two co-sanctioned events in China with the Suzhou Taihu China Ladies Open in Shanghai 26 - 28th October, followed the Sanya Ladies Open on the beautiful and tropical Chinese Island of Sanya off the southern coast, 2 - 4 November. Both of these events were won by Lee-Ann Pace 2 years ago in the same year that she dominated the Ladies Tour with a total of 5 wins and winning the Order of Merit at the end of the season, securing her a 10 year exemption in that 2010 season. These 2 events are complete opposites to each other as Shanghai is always cold, icy and very windy yet Sanya is lovely, hot and very humid. So that means winter warmers and bathing suit gets packed for the trip! The South Africans to watch out for that will be competing in China later this month are Lee-Ann Pace, Ashley Simon, Stacy Bregman and Connie Chen. These events are co-sanctioned with the Chinese and Asian Tour and therefore have limited spots are available. Following on from the China leg the Ladies European Tour will then return to New Delhi, India for the DLF Hero Honda Ladies Indian Open at the Arnold Palmer design, DLF Links Course from the 30 November to the 2nd December. This event is a personal favourite of mine. Aside from the fact that I thoroughly enjoy all Indian food, I absolutely love the golf course and have played well there every year with finishing 4th, 2nd (Lost in a play-off to Laura Davies) and a 20th placing. Each year I return, I seem to enjoy India more and more! The course suits a very accurate tee shots and good short game as the grainy greens can sometimes be difficult to read. If you manage to get a good feel and touch for them, then making putts becomes very easy and a low score is on the cards. If not, you will find the course unforgiving. Straight after India, the season finale is the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters at the Emirates Golf Club in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The Emirates Golf Club is my personal favourite course and I 82

Comeback complete, Europe retains Ryder Cup Europe teed off Sunday needing a comeback of historic proportions, and they got it. The Europeans won the first five singles matches en route to a turnaround victory for the ages. Erasing some of their worst Ryder Cup memories, the Europeans wore the image of Seve Ballesteros on their sleeves and played their hearts out Sunday at Medinah to match the greatest comeback in the sport's history and head home with that precious gold trophy.

E

urope got its payback for Brookline. Martin Kaymer gave German golf redemption for Kiawah Island.

Jose Maria Olazabal squeezed his eyes and fought back tears when Kaymer holed a 6-foot par putt – about the same length that countryman Bernhard Langer missed at Kiawah in 1991 – to beat Steve Stricker and give Europe the point it needed to keep the cup. Tiger Woods missed a 3-foot par putt on the 18th hole and conceded a par to Francesco Molinari that halved their match, that extra half-point making it a clear-cut win for Europe, 14 1/2 to 13 1/2. Woods and Stricker, the anchors in the lineup, didn't win a single match at Medinah. "This one is for all of Europe," Olazabal said. "Seve will always be present with this team. He was a big factor for this event for the European side, and last night when we were having that meeting, I think the boys understood that believing was the most important thing. And I think they did." 90

Ian Poulter was the first to embrace Olazabal, which was only fitting. It was Poulter who gave Europe hope Saturday evening when he made five straight birdies to turn a loss into a win and swing momentum in Europe's favor. Poulter was up to his fist-pumping, eyebulging tricks again on the final day, winning the last two holes in his match against U.S. Open champion Webb Simpson. And he had plenty of help. Europe's top five players in the lineup all won, including Rory McIlroy, who was lucky to be playing. McIlroy kept thinking his match was at 12:25 p.m. – it was listed in Eastern time, not Central – and he needed a police escort to get to the course with 10 minutes to spare. Then, he came up with key birdies to hand Keegan Bradley his first loss of the week. The biggest match might have belonged to Justin Rose. He was on the verge of losing to Phil Mickelson when Rose holed a 12-foot par putt to halve the 16th, made a 35-foot birdie putt from the back of the 17th green to win the hole, and then closed

out Mickelson with a 12-foot birdie on the last hole. Six of the 12 matches went to the 18th hole on Sunday. The Americans won only one of them. The Americans also rallied from a four-point deficit to win in 1999 at Brookline. This was different, though. The Americans won big in those early matches. At Medinah, so many of them could have gone either way. It was so close, so tense, that either side could have won the Ryder Cup down to the very end. Stricker made an 8-foot par putt on the 18th, and Kaymer faced a par putt from 6 feet to win the match. If he missed, the Americans would get a half-point, and Woods was leading 1-up over Molinari and in the middle of the 18th fairway. Kaymer, a former No. 1 and major champion who has struggled all year, poured it in the middle and the celebration was on.

November/December 2012

"It's a feeling I never had before," Kaymer said. "On Friday, I sat down with Bernhard and talked a little bit about the Ryder Cup because my attitude was not the right one. But now I know how important the Ryder Cup is." He could barely speak at this point, not so much from pure emotion but having to scream over the crowd behind him. Players were hugging and crying, and the small European contingent that had been drowned out all week was serenading themselves with what has become the theme song of the Ryder Cup. "Ole, ole, ole, ole," they sang merrily, even as the teams prepared for the closing ceremony. Europe now has won seven of the last nine Ryder Cups, and even more remarkable about this comeback is that they did it on the road.

LAUGH LOUD SPECIALOUT FEATURE

The A to Z of Golf: L, M, N L

96

M Mark - Any small object, such as a coin or tee, placed directly behind a ball to indicate a point on the green that is 5 inches farther from the hole than the spot where the ball will be replaced. Military golf "Left, right. Left, right." Mixed Foursome - A quartet of golfers composed of two separate grounds for divorce.

N Natural, a A birdie made without the aid of any handicap strokes. Naturally, a natural always seems to happen on the tough holes, where handicap www.sagolftrader.co.za

strokes are given. Easier holes, where no handicap strokes are available, often produce natural triple bogies. Needle - When you are verbally teasing and taunting your opponents, you are needling them or sticking in the needle. A good needier can really get under the skin of his competition. Never up, never in Admonition used after a putt is left short. In other words, another way to state the obvious. 19th Hole - The only hole on which golfers do not complain about the number of shots they took, or the place where most golfers find their best lies. Nip it - When you hit an iron shot without taking a divot, you have nipped it. Good golfers do this in an attempt to minimise backspin; bad golfers do it by accident. Numbers - A player's score after the subtraction of his or her handicap from the Gross Score is the Net Score. Adding strokes for each Mulligan yields the True Score. If whiffs and fluffs are also counted, the resulting tabulation is the Real Score. If strokes for lost balls, improved lies, and shots hit out of bounds are included as well, the grand total is the Actual Score. This number, when adjusted upward to reflect all gimme putts, becomes the Correct Score. When all the strokes made in sand traps and around obstructions are tacked on, this larger sum is the Absolute, Final, Honest-to-Goodness Score, which is usually only a halfdozen or so strokes lower than the total number of shots the player in fact made. Large - Term of admiration for a well-hit drive. For example, "That is large! Anything flying that far should have a stewardess on it." Lay the sod over it - Another term for hitting the ground behind the ball first. Theoretically, if you hit the ground firmly and far enough behind the ball, you may produce a divot that covers the undisturbed ball. Leak oil - What a golfer does as his game begins to fall apart. For duffers this process often begins at the first tee. With reference to the pros, this term is usually applied to a golfer who is leading a tournament but has begun to give away shots as his game disintegrates. Greg Norman has leaked more oil than the Exxon Voldez. Liz Taylor - A shot that's a little fat but still okay. Not to be confused with a Roseanne, which is very fat and not okay. Local Rules - A set of regulations that are ignored only by players on one specific course rather than by golfers as a whole. Lockjaw - Condition afflicting golfers who refuse to concede putts, even very short ones. Loft - The angle of a clubface and the corresponding steepness of the shot it will produce. Loft angles range from the relatively shallow ones used for long, unobstructed shots (12° for a driver, 20° for a fairway wood, 30° for a 5-iron) to the much steeper ones needed to clear obstacles (47 ° for a 9-iron, 58° for a sand wedge, 75° for the tip of

a golf shoe, and up to 100° for a throwing arm). Long and wrong - Description of a golfer who can hit the ball long distances but seldom in the right direction. As the late, great Harvey Penick said, "The woods are full of long hitters." Lost Ball - An opponent's missing ball after 90 seconds of searching, or one of your own after 20 minutes. Lot of game - Phrase describing a golfer who is excellent in all phases of the game. You say, "He certainly has a lot of game." Then you say, "I hate him." Lurking - In stroke-play tournaments, a term used to describe a player who is poised to make a move toward the top of the leader board. In amateur golf, it describes the lecherous souls who frequent the nineteenth hole.
