Year 11 Leadership
Dear Parents, Students and Staff
As part of the Leadership election process for Year 12, our current Year 11 nominees were asked to prepare a two minute speech on their desire to be a member of the Student Leadership Team and the skills they can bring to the role.
At last week’s assembly I spoke to the students about the concept of “Leaning In”. This is a term I have borrowed from Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg’s book of the same name, “Lean In”. The book is about business leadership and development, issues concerning the shortage of women in government, business leadership positions and feminism. The core message is about women developing confidence in themselves. This sentiment also applies to the lives of the students here at KRB, where each one needs to create a healthy balance with school life and home life, study, co-curricular involvement and socialising. It is important that our student support each other through school and as well “Lean In” – become involved, make your experiences here at KRB count and face challenges with confidence and a belief in your abilities and talents. I emphasised to our students the importance of setting personal goals. The journey that all students embark on may not be without its fair share of road blocks; if we can pick ourselves up and “get back on track”, these goals are achievable.
Academic Success At this same assembly, we were also honoured to present the Awards for Academic Achievement to students across all Year groups in the senior school. A list of these students is on page 3 in the Teaching and Learning section.
Over 50 students, the largest number of nominees ever, elected to present to their peers, staff and myself. We were impressed with the calibre of speeches, the confidence the students showed and as well the support from their fellow nominees. While we know that only a portion of students can achieve a leadership role, the fact that so many have applied is testament to their desire to act as role models and support the student community at KRB.
Welcome Morning Tea For the past two weeks I have been enjoying meeting our new students in the senior school at a series of Morning Teas. These sessions give me a chance to sit down with new students and get to know them, hear their thoughts on their KRB experience so far and to ensure that they are feeling connected to the school community and are becoming involved. Many have stated that the experience so far has been wonderful and they have appreciated the support and care that they have received from both teachers and students.

ISDA Debating
Our Primary A and Year 8 Debating teams were victors against Tangara and Loreto Kirribilli last Friday night, with each team presenting a debate that was very impressive in terms of its substantive matter. [link to story] We wish them luck in future rounds.
2013 School’s Reconciliation Challenge
I am pleased to announce that Victoria Ashley of Year 9 has had her artwork, “Mapping My World”; receive a Highly Commended award in the 2013 Schools Reconciliation Challenge. The artwork will be framed and exhibited in the Australian Museum between May and August this year. Victoria will receive a certificate at the Official Award Ceremony which will be followed by the Exhibition Launch at the Australian Museum on Friday 31 May 2013. The school was presented with a showcase of artworks from our students at last week’s assembly; these will be uploaded onto the KRB website [this will link to presentations] for you to view.
The McGrath Foundation Thank you to those of you who joined us to celebrate Mothers Day at our annual Senior School Mother Daughter Luncheon. It was a wonderful opportunity for over 400 mothers, guardians and daughters to celebrate this special day at Cyren Restaurant. We were also very privileged to have Kylea Tink, CEO of the McGrath Foundation, as guest speaker. Her inspirational speech focused on the people in her life who have influenced her and her thoughts about each group: yy Her mother – her advice was that we should all remember that our mother has been exactly where we are now yy Her grandmother – who encouraged Kylea to move into a different degree in the Public Relations area, from accounting yy Her teachers – Kylea emphasized that someone else’s faith in you can help you achieve extraordinary things yy Her sisters and friends – despite challenging times, sisters are often the most loyal to you. She also stated the importance of friendships; “the people in your life at any one time are the ones who matter to you, they are always there. Kylea also spoke of her friendship with Jane McGrath, co-founder of the McGrath Foundation and Jane’s courageous battle with breast cancer. To support the McGrath Foundation, Tangara House held a lunchtime BBQ on the Harbour Terrace last Friday. It was very well supported and raised money for the Foundation.
Night of Song
Last week the Chapel was the setting for the 3rd Annual Night of Song. 129 students from Years 3–12 showcased their varied talents and expertise in the area of vocal music. All three school choirs, Junior, Senior & Chamber presented a selection of works from their Term 1 programmes. Highlights included the Junior Choir’s energy and accomplished part singing. The Chamber Choir’s presentation included the sublime Evening Prayer by Humperdinck and the Senior Choir sent us away with some great messages found in the Pocahontas medley. Soloists from Barat Burn and the Seconday school were polished and varied in their choice of repertoire. Our special guest performer and alumna Miss Maia Andrews (KRB 2007) wowed the crowd with a choice of operatic aria by Mozart and some stunning lieder by Fauré and Schubert. The evening was a wonderful testimony to the progression from junior to senior and beyond which is the focus of all choral programmes at this school, as well as the work of our singing teachers. There is much joy in the singing at Kincoppal-Rose Bay.

Community Events
Our first Networking Evening for 2013 was held last Wednesday. Peter O’Brien facilitated a lively discussion on the management consultancy, human resources and recruitment professions with past students, Kate Barrington, Dominica Sinclair and parents Meg Tudehope and Robert Bustos-McNeil as members of the panel. Their advice to our current students was to develop people skills, network and use every opportunity you can to talk to as many different people as possible about future careers and be passionate about all you undertake. I would encourage our senior students to attend these evenings as they consider their future careers and tertiary options.
KRB placed 5th overall out of 26 schools at the IGSSA Cross Country Carnival. Congratulations to the following teams for their outstanding achievements:

Sacred Heart Piano Competition
KRB Mentors for Indigenous Students
The Sacred Heart Piano Competition has been a recent addition to the celebrations of Sacred Heart Week. It is held as a particular reflection of Goal 2, “A deep respect for intellectual values” The competition is intended to give recognition and performance experience to students who are well past the early stages of their pianistic development. It is open to students from Years Three to Twelve, who have attained a standard equivalent to Third Grade of any of the external examination systems, such as Australian Music Examination Board, Trinity College, or Associated Board. For this year’s competition we would like students to send a video of themselves performing their chosen piece, with a short verbal introduction naming the piece, the composer, and their reason for choosing it. All video entries are to be submitted by Tuesday 11th June at 3.00p.m. Videos must be sent to the Folder in KRB Student Common or can be submitted on a USB stick clearly marked with the students name & class and given to Mrs. Henrich in the Junior School or Mrs. Ferguson in the Senior School. Entries will be viewed and assessed by music staff. Three outstanding performers will be announced at the Sacred Heart Day Assembly. All three will be invited to perform at the Music Dinner, with one of these being awarded the Sacred Heart Piano Competition shield. Kincoppal-Rose Bay has a fine tradition of Piano Performance and we look forward to celebrating the skills of our pianists.
Red Shield Appeal
In the last week of Term 1, the KRB mentors for Indigenous students were joined for breakfast by alumni Tanika Perry. The KRB Mentoring Program for Indigenous Students aims to nurture the wellbeing of Indigenous students and support their optimum academic progress. Each student is paired with a member of staff and regular meetings are scheduled either before or after school. Tanika has been meeting with staff to share her knowledge of cultural issues and her insights into her own experience as a student at KRB. She is helping us to understand some of the ways in which we may best support our Indigenous students in their transition to boarding school in Sydney. Tanika is currently employed with the NRL and is studying part time at University to become a teacher. Tanika is a wonderful role model for all our students and we are very blessed to have her support in this initiative.

The Australian Indigenous Education Foundation (AIEF) celebrated another success filled year at the launch of its Annual Report on Thursday, 23rd May. The AIEF, founded by Andrew Penfold, aims to address the issue of educational disadvantage for Indigenous Australians by providing scholarship funding to enable Indigenous students to attend Australia’s top private schools. We are proud to be an AIEF affiliated school and to work in partnership with AIEF staff to improve educational outcomes for our Indigenous students. The AIEF has achieved “the highest rate of Year 12 completion of any federally funded program” (AIEF Annual Report, 2012). Attending the launch were our Principal, Mrs. Hilary Johnston-Croke, Mrs. Julie Burke and students, Gabrielle Ebsworth, Madeleine Mercer, Josie McGrath and Saskia Penfold. We were also very proud or our alumni, Tanika Perry, who shared Master of Ceremonies responsibilities for the day, and carried out her role with grace and professionalism.

Year 1 Fireman Visit
Joigny Excursion to Australian Museum
On Monday the Firefighters from Bondi Fire Station came to visit us. We saw the fire engine, it was red and yellow and we got to go in the fire engine. We talked about what are good fires and what are bad fires. We tried on the jackets and they looked like dresses on the children. Then we all got to spray the hose. Some went whoosh and poof! My favourite part was spraying the hose; I had a really fun time. Manon – 1 Red
Mr Whippy Visits Joigny Centre
Last term the children at the Joigny Centre learnt about Summer and from that emerged the yummiest learning experience ever – ice cream. Everyone loves ice cream in Summer and the children have been indulged in learning all there is to know about it. There has been an ice cream shop for role play, ice cream paintings, designing the yummiest and yuckiest ice creams ever and looking at ice creams in art. Some children have been designing ice cream making machines while others have been graphing everyone’s favourite flavours to see which is most popular. It has been a tempting and tasteful learning journey which culminated in a visit from Mr Whippy. The children heard the van before they saw it and there was many a goose bumpy arm on teachers as they recalled visits from Mr Whippy when they were children. Mr Whippy explained how the ice cream was made and told us all the flavours and toppings there were. Perhaps the explanation about how sprinkles are made was the best; “When a rainbow comes in the sky and then the rain comes as well, the rain washes the rainbow away and it breaks up into small pieces of all the different colours which then fall to the ground and Mr Whippy has to go and collect them all in his wheelbarrow.” The children were all treated to a yummy ice cream cone with sprinkles of course. What a fitting way to round up our engaging learning this term.
In the Joigny Centre we follow an emergent curriculum where our activities and learning emerge from children’s interests. This term there have been many amazing investigations on a variety of subjects including Treasure and Collections. Following on from an interest in pirates, the children have been exploring treasure and what it is that makes something a treasure. They designed and built their own treasure chests and managed to find a key that unlocked a real treasure chest filled with yummy Easter treasure. Along with treasure the children in each class have been talking about collections and created their own class collections of red, blue or white things. As a closing to both those projects the children visited the Australian Museum this week to look at all the collections and to view the Alexander the Great Treasure Exhibition. The exhibition had some wonderful examples of monetary treasure as well as jewels, rings and other gold objects. The musuem itself has a vast number of collections which varied from spiders and small insects to gems to skulls and dinosaurs. The children were fascinated with all there was to see, touch and explore. Look out for some interesting ‘collecting’ to start happening at home now.
Thomas Roche – Ex-student of Barat Burn, on Work Experience at KRB Thomas Roche, a Year 10 student form Cranbrook School, recently completed his work experience at Barat Burn. Tom is an ex student of Barat Burn himself, having completed his primary schooling at Kincoppal – Rose Bay before attending Cranbrook School. During his week at Barat Burn Tom had the opportunity to work in a range of classes and with a number of teachers. As Tom has a special interest in Mathematics and is an accelerated student in this subject he said that he particularly enjoyed working with Year 4 as they completed ‘Hand on’ measurement activities using trundle wheels and metre rulers. When asked about his interest in teaching Tom commented, “ I have been thinking about becoming a school teacher for the past few years. I was inspired to do so by a past teacher at Barat Burn, who always looked like she was enjoying her work.”

We had record numbers at both events for Mothers’ Day 2013. The beautiful weather enabled all mothers and their children to enjoy afternoon tea on the Fernon Fields on Friday 10 May. Many thanks to the Senior School mothers, Diane Maloney, Jo Carter, Sam Owen, Trish Quinn, Jane Antico and Shelley Griffin, who assisted at the afternoon tea. As well Cyren Restaurant was a perfect venue for the Senior School Mothers Day Lunch on the Saturday. Our first Networking Evening for 2013 held on Wednesday 15 May was well attended and an opportunity for current and past parents and current and past students to come together, hear about the challenges and opportunities in these professions and then network over informal drinks. A number of our past students have commented on the value of these evenings, many saying that they offer valuable insights into ways to gain entry into particular careers and as well opportunities for internships.
