SACRED HEART DAY CELEBRATIONS
FROM THE Deputy PRINCIPAL Feast of the Sacred Heart 2013 Our celebration of the Feast of the Sacred Heart on Thursday has been a wonderful way to conclude Term 2. There was a real sense of belonging to a special community, engendered particularly by the students, as they participated in the celebration. The day began with students from Kindergarten to Year 12, Sisters of the Sacred Heart, staff, parents and Board members gathering for a Eucharist in the MTC celebrated by Father Phillip Watkins. The festive atmosphere was demonstrated by both students and staff dressing in red and white for the occasion. We were privileged to have at our Mass the Sisters of the Society of the Sacred Heart and to express our appreciation to them for inspiring us in the spirit of the Sacred Heart. Following the Mass, we held an Assembly for our Years 3-12, during which Sister Philomene Tiernan RSCJ presented the Madeleine Sophie Awards. A feature of the Assembly was the Notre Coeur House Competition which highlighted the students’ creativity and their gifts and talents. The Assembly culminated with the Sacred Heart Cheer where we were able to witness the KRB student community in action! Following the Assembly, the students enjoyed the Mission Fete held over lunch which saw each year group creatively prepare a stall selling a variety of services and goods to raise funds for the work of the Society of the Sacred Heart in India. There was a wonderful atmosphere as Junior and Senior school students participated enthusiastically in support of this social justice venture. Another very special occasion during the week was the Procession of the Lanterns celebrated by our boarding community
PROCESSION OF THE LANTERNS
on the eve of Sacred Heart Day. This is traditionally a very special occasion for our boarders, particularly for those in Year 12 who lead the Procession. We were also privileged during the week to celebrate cultural diversity at KRB through the Cultural Diversity Assembly on Wednesday. The Assembly provided wonderful insight into the different cultures which make up the KRB community. During the the week we were also able to experience firsthand the diversity of cultures through the variety of food on offer at our International Food Stalls.

Such a wonderful, bittersweet ceremony tonight at Procession of the Lanterns. #boarders

Dalai Lama Visit On Monday 17 June, ten students from Years 7, 8,9,11 and 12 went to the Young Minds’ Conference at the Sydney Town Hall to hear his Holiness, the Dalai Lama, speak. He spoke to us about the importance of happiness and well-being, and how to achieve this. His Holiness the Dalai Lama was joined by three women who had extensive experience working with and educating young people. This panel included one Italian woman named Carla Rinaldi who is an educational scholar and Professor at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia and a Muslim woman and engineer whose parents’ greatest belief was in duty. There was then time to ask questions. After this we went back to school. We had a great day and learnt a lot. His Holiness was a great inspiration.

Cultural Diversity Week Cultural Diversity Food Stall was a very successful and enjoyable day. We had a variety of food such as Italian, Indonesian, Korean, Thai, Japanese and Chinese. All of the foods were sold outside on the Harbour Terrace and were freshly made, extremely delicious and sold for reasonable prices. The event brought all the KRB community together and allowed students to experience the diversity of food. Mary Grace Brunker, Head Girl 2012-13, stated, “The Cultural Diversity lunch was one of the best days of the year.” The following day we had the Cultural Diversity Assembly. This year, we decided to be a bit creative and change the performances. With an opening of Harlem Shake, the morale and atmosphere of the Assembly was raised up. In addition to this, for the first time, we had to learn a culture that was not our own and that was the Indian Bollywood dance. We also introduced a game and allowed the audience to participate in it, allowing students to experience and learn firsthand about different cultures. Lastly, we also incorporated interesting cultural facts and learnt how to say welcome in languages that are uncommon at KRB, such as Arabic, Yiddish, Vietnamese and Indian. Overall, the Assembly was just as successful as the Food Stall and was very entertaining. We would like to thank Ms Yin Yang, Mrs Mount, Mr Dogra, Mrs Ferguson, Mrs Del Vecchio and Mrs Swan for making the event possible. And most importantly, we would like to thank the students of KRB who helped through buying or participating in the event. We, as a Committee, are truly grateful. The Cultural Diversity Committee

KRB Procession of the Lanterns On 19 June the boarding community celebrated one the Procession of the Lanterns. Traditionally held on the eve of Sacred Heart Day, the Procession of Lanterns began when an early Mistress General, (Principal) Mother Amelie Salmon, came to Rose Bay from her school in France. She then introduced this procession, which she had commenced at her French school. Our sacristy journal records that in 1903 children processed into the chapel with candles. As the years evolved, lanterns replaced the candles. We have kept the tradition of using paper lanterns, each being handmade and embossed with Sacred Heart emblems. The Procession is now an established and most treasured tradition in our schools in Australia and New Zealand. The evening began with a formal dinner for the Boarders, the Leadership team, Sister of the Society of the Sacred Heart and the Year 12 parents. Director of Boarding Jill Miller spoke about the tradition and ritual of the Procession and its significance to Kincoppal – Rose Bay. After the dinner the students return to the Boarding House where they receive a decorated lantern and then process to the Chapel down the spiral staircase holding their lanterns and singing hymns. The Chapel was beautifully decorated by the Year 11 girls with a heart shaped arrangement of candles. This year the parents and guests were seated in the Chapel as well as the loft and the 1890 French Puget organ was played by Mark Stubley. The blessings were read by the Head Boarder, Laura Goodfellow and the Director of Boarding Jill Miller. Thank you must go to Mark Stubley for preparing the students and playing the organ, Maureen Brian for preparing the Chapel, Kendi Pascoe for making the beautiful lanterns. Congratulations also to the boarders who in true “cor unum”spirit commit to this celebration each year. They displayed immense reverence and sang beautifully on the night.

Sacred Heart Day 2013 On Thursday 20 June, the School celebrated the Feast of the Sacred Heart. It is traditional that the focus of the day is Social Justice. The Mass, in prayers and theme, begins the day, drawing attention to the centrality of the Eucharist in the life of the School. The Year 11 students present programs on Social Justice to students from Year 3 – 10 during the morning tea. After an assembly in which the Madeleine Sophie Awards are given to students who have demonstrated their loyalty to the school values, the day concludes with the Social Justice Fete. This fete raises funds for the work of the Society of the Sacred Heart in India, and, this year, the money raised by Year 8 will be used to further research in Multiple Sclerosis. The Mission Fete raise more than $4000. Go to FlIckr and view our photo gallery.
Cor Unums Visit St Mary’s Cathedral
Debating
On the Feast of Our Lady Help of Christians (24 May 2013), a special Mass was celebrated by Cardinal George Pell at St Mary’s Cathedral, attended by student representatives from all of the primary schools in the Archdiocese of Sydney. KRB was represented by our Year 6 Cor Unum students and Mrs Belinda Connolly (Junior School Religious Education Co-ordinator). Mary is the patroness of the Sydney Archdiocese and of Australia, and the Mass was a special opportunity for students to gather together to celebrate this most important feast. A highlight was our Cor Unum students meeting with Cardinal Pell after the Mass.
Archdale What a fantastic night of debating with KRB winning 5 out of the 7 debates! Roseville is an incredibly strong debating team, and to secure so many wins is just amazing. Well done to 7A, 7B for their second win in a row! The coaches have fed back to me how pleased they are with their teams. Most teams are said to be really making strides, and are making a huge effort. It is satisfying for coaches to see them taking on board what they’ve been trained to do, and putting it into practice.

ISDA The 2013 ISDA season was a successful one for KRB. To the Primary A team, who won all but one of their debates during the season and were Grand Final winners, well done team! The Senior A, Senior B, Year 10 and Year 9 teams all won four debates in the season – the majority of their debates. An amazing debate from the Senior School was delivered by the Year 8 team, consisting of Ali Gazal, Georgia Hinds, Isabella Monardo and Kate Parsons. The Year 8 team won five debates and progressed to Semi-Final Three, only to be knocked-out in an unlucky split decision. This team shows great promise for the years to come.
