brian anderson with his grandaughters, sons and family at the father daughter dinner

FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear Parents, Students and Staff The past fortnight has been full of activity as Year 12 prepare for their final weeks of school and Year 11 began their final preliminary exams, before beginning their study for the Higher School Certificate. As well, KRB has held some significant community events.,

Fathers’ Day 2013 Both our Senior and Junior School students had the opportunity to celebrate Fathers’ Day last week with two celebrations. Over 300 fathers, grandfathers and relatives attended a breakfast on the Fernon Fields, followed by Mass in the Maureen Tudehope Centre celebrated by Monsignor Tony Doherty. Each father received a special memento of the day from the students. Our Senior School Father Daughter Dinner held at the Sofitel Wentworth was a successful and enjoyable event and attended by 480 fathers, father figures, relatives and daughters. It was an opportunity for me to acknowledge fathers who not only have had an association of 10 years or more with KRB but who have been great role models and have helped build the sense of community at the school. These fathers included Bill Reynolds, John Simmons, Stuart Eaton, Tony Ryan, John Mahony, Simon Gray, Ralph Del Vecchio and Robert Padoani, who have been associated with KRB for an extensive time, some for over 20 years. As well we were delighted to acknowledge Brian Anderson, father of Suzie, Mike,

Peter, Caroline and Sally and grandfather of Lucy, Maggie, Tori, Prue, Claudia and Molly. Brian currently has six grandchildren at KRB.

Welcome from the Principal

Many thanks to our MC Tim Murphy, to the P&F for their organisation of the raffle and to all who assisted in making the night a memorable event .

3 Teaching & Learning

With the election this weekend, you will have noticed in the lead up how the two prime ministerial candidates, Tony Abbot and Kevin Rudd, placed immense importance on their daughters. It is obvious that their fathers have played a key role in their upbringing in a loving and caring environment despite their very busy lives. It is important as fathers to show your interest in the growth and maturity of your daughter by being a good sounding board. Never underestimate your role in listening rather than providing solutions. Above all, never miss a chance to show how you value the women in your life, both younger and older.

Leadership Conference Last week I attended the Sacred Heart Schools Leadership Workshop with Maryanne Carrick, Head of the Junior School and Marie Wood, Director of Students, at Stuartholme School in Brisbane. We worked with the Principals and members of the Leadership Teams of Stuartholme and Sacre Coeur. Workshops were led by Dr Stephen Brown, CEO of the Queensland Institute of Educational Leadership and John Marks, Educational Consultant and a member of the Sacre Coeur School Board. These workshops are a great opportunity for the cross-

Year 12 Our Year 12 students have now completed major projects, including Visual Arts, Design and Technology, Extension 2 English and Extension History major works. As well, our Year 12 Music students have just completed the Performance component of their HSC Music course. We were entertained by a beautiful Chapel Concert on Friday 23 August, where each Year 12 student performed part of their repertoire for the HSC. Performances included instrumental solos, performances of students’ own compositions, vocal solos and duets. We also enjoyed the performances of the choirs, orchestra and chamber groups. Each of the HSC Music students demonstrated her talent and the time and commitment she had given to preparing for her performance. They expressed satisfaction after completing their HSC Performance exam last Tuesday, where they felt they had done their best. Everyone appreciated the 2013 HSC Art and Design Exhibition held last week. A variety of genres, including sculpture, graphic design, drawings, paintings and photomedia came together in a most amazing exhibition which was enhanced for the first time by a number of design projects, including jewellery, a travel dress kit and a graphic beat box table. Guests at the Opening commented on the high quality of all the works and I congratulate the students and the staff who have put so much time and energy into completing them. Special congratulations as well to Kate Simmons whose photography won a prize in the Woollahra Council Youth Competition.

Next week marks the final one for our Year 12 Class of 2013 and we will be farewelling them and celebrating their achievements and the outstanding contribution they have made as a year group to KRB on Friday 13 September at the Year 12 Vale Mass on the Harbour Terrace, Graduation Ceremony and Luncheon. There is also a Farewell Dinner for Year 12 Boarders and their parents on the Thursday evening before Vale. Our Year 12 students are all very appreciative of their teachers and the support and the attention that they continue to receive. They particularly value the strong community that KRB has.

Sabrina Kwok recently returned from competing in Dubai and came 6th at the Junior World Championships for the 50m backstroke. 6th fastest junior in the world for that distance- a very impressive achievement! Well done Sabrina, we are very proud of you. Best of luck to our 7B team in the upcoming Grand Final for the Archdale Debating Competition and our Netball and Hockey teams who are all playing their semi-finals this weekend.

Parent Perception Survey

I know you will join with me in wishing our Year 12 students well as they prepare for their Higher School Certificate exams.

Thank you to all the Parents who participated in this survey in Term 1. The outcomes have been reported to the School Board and I have also made presentations to the School Leadership Team and the Staff.

Student Achievements

There was a lot of affirmation for the strengths of the school including-

On Tuesday I attended the Archbishop’s Award Ceremony at St Mary’s Cathedral where Head Girl, Mary - Grace Brunker, received the Archbishop of Sydney’s Award. A Year 12 student from each Catholic school in the Archdiocese was presented with a certificate and medal from Cardinal Pell and Bishop Comensoli, in recognition of their participation in the leadership, social justice, and liturgical life of their school. Mary-Grace has been an outstanding Head Girl and fully deserves this nomination. After the Ceremony Mary-Grace commented; “the candidates who I met all agreed that this ceremony and the recognition from the Cardinal was an achievement we could all be very proud of, and a testament to the fantastic teaching and care that our schools offer.” Our success in Visual Arts continues with and Juliet Ring of Year 7 winning first prize in the junior category of the Woollahra Youth Photographic Competition. Congratulations as well to Victoria Ashley of Year 9 who won a prize in the MIL-PRA ‘Aboriginal Exhibition and Art Prize’.

yy Atmosphere and ethos yy Principal yy Teaching and Learning yy Pastoral Care yy Boarding The conclusions from the survey will certainly form part of our new Strategic Plan that the School Leadership Team has begun working on. There are some areas that we would like to explore further. One of these is our Sporting and co-curricular program. Consequently, I have commissioned AIS (the Association of Independent Schools) to carry out a Review. The first stage of this Review will be a short survey to parents, students and staff that will be sent out next week. We would really appreciate everyone responding. Regards, Hilary Johnston-Croke Principal

TEACHING & LEARNING

HSC Art and Design Exhibition 2013 This month the work of our HSC Visual Art students and Design and Technology students were on display in the Maureen Tudehope Centre. The diversity and breadth of the works was remarkable, with a range of media including film, installation, painting, sculpture, printmaking and digital photography. We wish our Year 12 Art and Design students all the very best for the marking of their HSC works this year.

Woollahra Youth Photo Competition First Prize Winners Congratulations to Kate Simmons of Year 12 and Juliet Ring of Year 7 who have both won first prize in the Junior and Secondary categories of the Woollahra Youth Photographic Competition! The theme of this year’s competition was ‘rear view mirror’. Last night Kate and Juliet attended the presentation and each were awarded first prize by the Mayor of Waverley and Rex Dupain (son of the famous Australian photographer Max Dupain). Congratulations also to all of our wonderful entrants this year- the standard was very high!

BOARDING

British Theme night The dining room was transformed into a medieval hall, complete with a knight in silver amour for the Boarding Community British theme night dinner. Tastefully decorated in red, white and blue Union Jacks, with cardboard cut outs of the King and Queen, the dining room reflected the English theme. British music complemented the atmosphere on the night with the girls enjoying classic British bands such as the Beatles, Rolling Stones and One Direction. The evening commenced with the arrival of the Royal family complete with the Queen, Kate, William, Camilla and Charles and the new baby Prince George. The menu for the evening reflected the British theme with bangers and mash and as a special treat for dessert the girls were given sconces, jam and cream in three tier cake stands. Prices were given to the best dressed with the Year 9 group of Phoebe McGeoch, Sophie Stack, Gabby James Bennett, Maddison Dale and Xanthe O’Neil being awarded the price for their “boy band”. Thank you must go Kendi Pascoe who created the wonderful English collage of the dining room, her decorating skills are extraordinary.

Victoria Ashley, Year 9, Wins Aboriginal Exhibition and Art Prize Victoria Ashley of Year 9 has won a prize in the MIL-PRA ‘Aboriginal Exhibition and Art Prize’. The theme for this year was “Stories from the Bush” and you can see Victoria’s artist’s book below. Congratulations Victoria!

KRB Musical 2014 – Once On This Island It is with great pleasure the Music and Drama departments announce the 2014 musical at KRB. Once on This Island is a one-act musical set in the French Antilles in the Caribbean Sea. The show also includes elements of the Romeo and Juliet story; as well as the fairytale of The Little Mermaid. It tells the story of a peasant girl, who uses the power of love to bring together people of different social classes. The original Broadway production ran from 1990 to 1991, and the West End production opened in 1994, where it won the 1995 Olivier Award for Best New Musical. The music is up-beat and has a very Afro-Caribbean flavour, and the musical features lots of singing and dancing. The performances will be on Thursday 3rd-Sunday 6th April 2014 in the Maureen Tudehope Centre. Auditions are open to students currently in Years 3-10. These will take place Sunday 20th October with callback on Sunday 27th October. The main rehearsal day will always be a Sunday with evening rehearsals midweek. All students have been emailed the details of the audition requirement and a link to register online. This should be completed by 7th October to ensure an audition time is allocated. Women & Leadership Forum

This week we had three KRB teams in the semi-finals. The girls approached the debate with a sense of calm, but purpose. Congratulations to our 7B team who defeated SCEGGS Darlinghurst and are now proceeding on to the Grand-final. Unlucky losses for our 7A team and 8B team who debated well in very challenging topic areas. A big thank you to all the parents and coaches who came to support their students.

Well done to all girls on such a wonderful season. Proceeding to the semi-finals is such a huge accomplishment and you should all be very proud of yourselves! See you at the Debating Dinner which is on Tuesday 17 September. Please rsvp to events@krb.nsw.edu.au.

Faith The Spirituality Evening in the diary for Thursday, November 14, is cancelled.

The KRB Women and Leadership Forum, proved to be a truly enriching experience that provided us as young women with plentiful practical and inspirational advice. The guest speakers were more than happy to share personal experiences with us which created an intimate and relaxed atmosphere. They shared stories that gave us insight into specific careers as well as the difficulties they had to face. Through these stories we empathised and were empowered to realise the potential we have as women to make a difference regardless of the career path we choose. Each guest speaker brought different personal attributes to the forum which made it a relaxed and enjoyable event that not only was very interesting but made sure KRB’s twitter feed was filled with motivational and supportive advice. Elizabeth Broderick mentioned that success was based on what you as the individual perceived it as I thoroughly appreciated this quote as it demonstrated that in order to be successful one must be happy with what they have achieved for themselves not others. This emphasized to me, and I’m sure many other girls, that our potential as women is to strive to create a supportive and encouraging environment for all too succeed. Parent Information Session: Drug and Alcohol Research Training Australia (DARTA) Date: Tuesday 10th September (Week 9) Time: 6.30pm – 8.00pm Venue: KR Centre Presenter: Paul Dillon Many parents, like their children, access information on drugs from inappropriate sources such as the media and as a result there is a great deal of mythology around drugs and their use. This presentation, based on Paul Dillon’s new book ‘Teenagers, Alcohol and Drugs’, will attempt to give accurate, up-to-date information on what is known about young people, alcohol and drugs in Australia. The presentation aims to empower parents with some basic information about current trends in alcohol and other drugs by examining the questions young people really want and need answers to. This will assist parents to have meaningful conversations with their child when responding to queries that may be raised. The presenter, Paul Dillon, has been working in the area of drug education for the past 25 years. For the past 16 years he has worked at the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre, Sydney where his key role was to disseminate research findings to policy makers, drug and alcohol workers and the general public. Through his own business, Drug and Alcohol Research and Training Australia (DARTA) he has been contracted by many agencies and organisations across the country to give regular updates on current drug trends within the community. He has also worked with many school communities to ensure that they have access to good quality information and best practice drug education. With a broad knowledge on a range of content areas, Paul regularly provides media comment and is regarded as a key social commentator in Australia, appearing on a wide range of television programs including Sunrise, TODAY and the 7PM Project discussing topical issues.
