A deep r es p e ct f o r in t e l l e c tual values
FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear Parents, Students and Staff Welcome to Term 4. The non-term break was a busy time for KRB with a large number of our Year 12 students making use of the Study Week in the second week of the break. Our Year 12 students worked productively during the time and were able to use library facilities and technology and access past examination papers. Teachers and tutors, in a range of subjects, were on hand to assist students to deepen their research and reading on individual study topics.
HSC 2013 On Monday this week the HSC Examinations commenced and we are certainly keeping the students in our prayers and wish them every success. The girls have been touched by the support that has come from all corners of the KRB community. Our Head of English, Kate O’Connor says, “Our Year 12 were relieved to finally complete the HSC English papers this week. Students went into the exams with the confidence that they could not be more thoroughly prepared. Students found Paper 1 quite accessible and their responses focused on choices and attitudes to belonging. Paper 2 Examinations for Advanced, Standard and ESL were more challenging, requiring students to think carefully about how to engage with the complexities of the questions. Students’ responses after the exams were very encouraging, with the overall consensus that each paper had
provided the opportunity for students to really demonstrate the depth of their knowledge. In the lead up to the HSC, we were very pleased with the dedication and commitment of the students, particularly the quality of the work submitted for advice and feedback. Girls were producing impressive essays with strong arguments that demonstrated an impressive knowledge and understanding of the texts.”
USA Art Tour At the end of last term, 20 KRB students and 3 Visual Arts staff, led by Louise Della Franca, Head of Art and Design, experienced an Art Tour of the USA, visiting galleries and museums in New York, Los Angeles and Greenwich. A highlight of their tour was the partnering with Sacred Heart Schools in Greenwich and New York, reminding students and staff of the rich Sacred Heart network that exists in the world and that we are indeed part of a very wide Sacred Heart community.
Global Connections Building on our Sacred Heart Network, Mr Murray Kerstens last week attended the Expanding Sacred Heart through Exchange Conference in St Charles, Missouri. Mrs Hilary Johnston-Croke is currently attending the European Sacred Heart Heads of School Conference in Dublin. Such opportunities to network with other Sacred Heart schools are invaluable for KRB in developing our relationships with the US and European Sacred Heart Schools.

2013 KRB Transition Program “What I wish I knew in Year 6” During Term 3 and Term 4 of 2013 the KRB Transition Program has been ongoing as part of our academic care for Year 6 students entering Year 7 in 2014. On Wednesday 16 October, all Year 6 students from Barat Burn came to the KR Centre on the Senior School campus for some words of advice from current Year 7 and Year 10 students. The title of the session was “What I wish I knew in Year 6” and an expert student panel spoke of the importance of: yy Being organised with your equipment, locker and homework yy Using the Diary as a recording and prioritising tool yy Being friendly and helpful to everyone yy Asking your teachers for help yy Using the Year 7 Camp as a great opportunity for making new friends. Thank you very much to our Year 7 students for their generosity and their insights – Tallulah Baran, Olympia Denton, Juliet Gollan, Monna Muldoon and Niamh Tomlinson. Thank you also to Year 10 students, Sasha Allerton, Claire Shephard and Molly Windsor who talked about being prepared for Assessment tasks, wearing the uniform proudly and correctly and being environmentally friendly. This session was followed by an introduction to the use of laptops, facilitated by Mr Jonathan Saurine, Director of Learning Innovation and Ms Michelle Olah, Education Media Designer at KRB. From them, Year 6 students learned more about the importance of using technology ethically and as a powerful learning tool. It was a successful afternoon, focussing on developing a sense of continuity and connectedness as Year 6 students begin their secondary schooling. Many questions were asked and answered; all seemed positive about the prospect of Year 7 which was exactly the purpose of the afternoon! Mrs Marie Wood Directors Students
AIM in the Junior School and ELC Bonjour! I am thrilled to announce that from Term 4 onwards, French at Kincoppal-Rose Bay Junior School and ELC will be immersion language in the classroom! This year, we have been progressively building on understanding and using instructions and classroom language in the target language as well as practical language based on: yy asking someone’s name and introducing ourselves, yy asking and saying how we are feeling and yy asking important classroom questions, including “May I speak in English, please?” (in French, of course!). yy giving and responding to a variety of classroom instructions and actions. The objective of increasing the amount of French language heard and used in the classroom, has been to build students’ confidence in preparation for total immersion. In Term 4, we will now be moving forward with an immersion French programme – the AIM programme (Accelerative Integrated Methodology). The AIM programme rapidly accelerates second language acquisition and is the most comprehensive approach to language teaching and learning in the world today. It helps students gain a lot of competence and confidence in the language at a very early stage in their language acquisition through song, dance, drama and story-telling. Students will be actively and consistently speaking French in the classroom and each word is associated through a gesture so that translation is not necessary, which means we don’t need English in our French classroom! Our students are engaged in language learning and have responded successfully and enthusiastically to a French-only approach so much so, that students once heard me speak in English with another teacher and told me in French “you must speak in French”. It was a powerful moment ‘getting into trouble’ by my students who did so using the French language! I feel confident the rewards of language fluency are in the grasp of our children and I look forward to providing exciting and successful language learning opportunities for them and sharing the results with you in the future. A bientôt, Madame White 18 october 2013 | KRB News Issue 14 | 3

What’s on in the Senior School Library
STUDENTS IN ACTION
Spring Chickens
Recently, the Library has withdrawn a large number of print resources from the collection. This has freed up shelf space, and has created an additional zone for students. The space has a beautiful view out the windows and the senior students have expressed their appreciation of this area, it is constantly in use at present by Year 12 students. This week the Library has launched its small messaging board, and it displays current messages, promotes recent additions to our collection, and Library services available. The Homework Centre operates in the Senior Library every afternoon Monday to Thursday from 3.30 – 5.30. Students from Year 5 to 12 are welcome to visit the Library to complete homework, seek homework support from teachers on duty or tutoring with an external tutor (please contact Mrs Swan on swanm@krb.nsw.edu.au about this service). The Homework Centre offers a supportive environment to encourage completion of set work under the supervision of Mrs Donna Kratochvil. An Extended Day programme also operates in the Library. Day students may be enrolled by a parent or guardian with the Student Services Officer (9388 6023) and they enjoy dinner with the Boarders in their dining room and return to supervised study in the Library until collection at 8.30pm. With the arrival of Spring and the children’s understanding that in Spring baby animals are born Joigny decided to participate in the Henny Penny hatching program. 4 chickens arrived and 13 eggs which were in an incubator. The children have been eagerly arriving each morning to see how many chickens hatched over night as well as sharing their ideas and theories about how the chicken gets out of the egg. The children have been able to observe, care for and cuddle the chickens as well as developing their understanding of life cycles. The chickens are living at Joigny for the next 2 weeks and will certainly be missed when they head back to the farm.
Public Speaking: Stage Finals 2013 The Public Speaking Finals for 2013 were held this week and the standard of speaking of the boys and girls was once again extremely high. The adjudicators commented on the impressive level of research that was obvious in each speech and the professional standard of the overall presentations. They were also impressed with the confidence, manner and diction of all the boys and girls in the various finals. The 2013 competition has seen the bar raised yet again; not only in terms of the prepared speeches but also the student’s ability to deliver fantastic impromptu speeches. Sydney Symphony Orchestra Excursion – Years 1 & 2
Bowraville 2013
During the first week of the September holidays, five KRB girls and five gap students accompanied by Mr Mooney, Ms Galea and Ms Chapple as well as two 2007 alumnae, travelled to Bowraville to work with the Indigenous community.
On Tuesday 15 October, Years 1 & 2 visited the ABC studio to see and witness the outstanding music of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. The conductor introduced herself as Jessica. After the full orchestra had played a piece by a Russian composer called Tchaikovsky. Jessica then began to introduce the different families of the orchestra to us. First of all, she introduced the woodwinds. In the woodwinds the instruments were; Piccolos, Clarinets, Oboes and Flutes. With the woodwinds, Jessica had each wood wind play a solo piece of music with their own instrument. Next, Jessica showed us the string family. In the string family there were Violas, Violins, Double Bass and Cellos. Instead of playing a solo this time, the entire string family did a piece of music, this piece happened to be called Frere Jacques, which is a French song. After a wonderful solo by the strings, Jessica showed us the Brass family. The Brass family consisted of the French Horn, Trombone and Trumpet. Finally Jessica took us through Percussion. The instruments she showed us in the percussion family included; the Glockenspiel, Bass drum, Symbols, Tambourines and Wood block. Half way through the show, Jessica invited some people from the audience down to the front, to dance. I was privileged to be one of those people. I think the Sydney Symphony Orchestra was a spectacular enjoyment that I think every child witnessed. Eva Jacobson, of Year One White, was also invited to perform the cheeky puppet dance with the orchestra. She said “It felt fabulous! The music was catchy and mesmerizing” Myfanwy Hill-Caulfield (Year 2 Red)
We stayed at Nambucca Heads for the week, travelling half an hour each morning into Bowraville to be met by the smiling faces of up forty children. Each morning, breakfast of toast and warm milo would be prepared for the kids, who varied in age from 3 to 14. This was followed by daily activities which included mask making, colouring in, journal writing, running races and movies when the temperature exceeded 38 degrees. A visit from a successful Aboriginal head chef, who now owns and operates his own restaurant ‘The Jaaning Tree’ in Numbucca Heads, saw the kids having hands on sessions with Clayton Donovan. He taught them how to make their own pikelets and healthy burgers. We were all very excited when on the second day; we took the kids to Coffs Harbour and the Dolphin Marine Magic Park where we all got to hug a seal and watch a fantastic seal show. We also had an opportunity to speak with the principal of St. Mary’s Primary School, Mr Troy Baker, where he told us of the difficulties some people from the Bowraville community are faced with and the uncensored events and daily happenings many of the kids are exposed to. It was an invaluable opportunity for us to understand some of the hardships that contribute to their way of life and we were excited to be able to brainstorm our ideas about how the KRB community can help out! Our trip to Bowraville was one that we will never forget. We were exposed to things that many of us had never experienced and it allowed us to really put things in perspective. The bonds that were made with the children will be cherished by us forever. Although at times it was mentally and physically exhausting, the Bowraville trip was the most rewarding thing we have ever done! We would like to thank all of the teachers who accompanied us and the school for allowing us to go and we encourage anyone who has the opportunity, lend a hand and immerse yourself, GO TO BOWRAVILLE! KRB USA ART TOUR 2013 20 KRB students from Year 8 to Year 11 participated in the 15 day USA Art and Cultural Tour during the September holidays. The extensive tour included visits to major galleries, monuments, cultural sights and museums. We also visited the Sacred Heart schools in Manhattan and Connecticut which was one of the highlights of the tour and has led to the beginnings of a collaborative exchange of ideas between our schools! If you would like to read the daily blog from the art tour please visit http://krbart.tumblr.com/ Below is an excerpt from the art tour blog by Grace Condon, Year 11
Day 15 – Heading Home!! How do you encapsulate something as wonderful and amazing as the USA Art Tour into one little blog post? This trip has been so fulfilling and inspiring for all of us that I’m sure words can’t describe our experience. From L.A to Washington, to New York and Boston, we have learnt so much about not only Art but about a different culture, the history of another nation, travel and about ourselves and our peers. The museums and galleries we have visited have sparked inspiration and enthralled all of us and it has truly been a gift to be able to see works that we have heard about and studied in class. As well as seeing the more well-known artworks we have also been able to access new works by contemporary artists. The history and culture of America is so rich, unique and different to our own and being able to experience and live amongst it by walking the streets, catching the subway and interacting with the locals has enabled us to learn so much and become globally savvy.
6 | KRB News Issue 15 | 18 october 2013
Travelling as a group we have also learnt that patience is the key and that waiting is an accepted part of being in a group. However being in a group has allowed us to realise our strengths as individuals. Whilst some girls struggle to get up, others can spring out of bed and get everyone ready! This trip has given us the opportunity to take responsibility for ourselves but also our friends. We have had to look out for each other and work together to be on time and to remain together. The group of girls on this trip range from 13 to 17 years of age and all have their own quirky traits and gifts. Being given the opportunity to get to know these girls better has been one of the greatest treasures of this trip and I’m sure we can all agree that friendships have been formed and strengthened. Ms Della Franca, Ms Brown and Ms Papandrea have been incredible! All three teachers have been there for us girls and have looked after our welfare both physically and emotionally and without them this trip wouldn’t have worked at all. We all agree that they are the best teachers ever! So as I come to the end of this post I feel there is a lot more to say but not near enough time. We have learnt so much and made so many great memories, taken some fantastic photos and learnt more than we could imagine!. As we head home we leave content and filled with a sense of joy and enlightenment.

Term 4 In-Weekend
Sacre Coeur Tennis Tour Melbourne
Our last In Weekend for the year was on the 11–12 October; the girls enjoyed themselves and enjoyed the activities immensely. Friday night was low key, as we have around 80 boarders who play indoor soccer, but for those who remained in the boarding community there was a movie night in the KR Centre
At the end of last term, a team of nine KRB girls travelled to Melbourne to play in the Bi Annual Sacre Coeur Tennis competition. We played Stuartholme, Baradene and Sacre Coeur over a period of 3 days and all players were billeted with Sacre Coeur families. The Tennis teams were as follows:
On Saturday the girls participated in two activities; a treasure hunt and the making of a patchwork quilt. Each boarder was given a material square and asked to personalise it by drawing or sewing a design that is significant to them. The squares will be sewn together to make a patchwork quilt which will be hung in the dining room. The treasure hunt was around the campus and the girls were given a set of clues to find the hidden treasure. The girls were highly engaged in this activity and all managed to work through the clues to find the treasure. The weekend culminated with a paraliturgy on Saturday that was planned and organised by the Boarding SRC. The change to the In Weekend program in 2013, which has resulted in an in weekend in week one of each term, has been affirming and highly beneficial to the boarding community. It has created a unique opportunity for the girls to spend time together to strength and build friendships while bringing about a strong sense of community.
