KALMAR REGION a taste of Sweden Småland’s virgin forest is home to some of the world’s most famous glassworks. The traditions live on at the glassworks in the heart of the Kingdom of Crystal. Here, the masters shape the molten glass into frozen moments and unique pieces of glass. Craftsmanship is an important element and much of the production is done in the traditional way. Orrefors and Kosta-Boda art glassware is famous around the world, and many of the artists at the glassworks are well-known names at international museums and galleries.

KALMAR REGION a taste of Sweden For hundreds of years, Kalmar Castle was one of Sweden’s most important strongholds. The cannon balls in the castle walls show how the besieged castle was exposed to frequent attacks. During peacetime, the kings kept court and held many a feast here. Today, the castle is a meeting place of culture and living history. Kalmar is an exciting mix of old and new. The city centre is partly surrounded by a city wall, and many medieval buildings have been preserved. In contrast, the modern part of the city, Varvsholmen, offers everything from exciting architecture to a floating house.

KALMAR REGION a taste of Sweden Stora Alvaret on Öland is a World Heritage Site with unique types of nature. In spring, the flowering orchids light up the poor limestone soil. Alvaret is also a place for reflection and inspiration: the barren landscape with its strange light has influenced many generations of artists. On the southern point of Öland is Ottenby, which is known for its beautiful lighthouse and bird habitats. Hundreds of thousands of migratory birds pass here in spring and autumn. On northern Öland, the Neptuni fields and the limestone pillars in Byerum are popular with visitors, and there is also the sandy beach of Böda, which stretches for miles.

KALMAR REGION a taste of Sweden In 1676, ship-of-the-line Kronan sank outside Öland. For more than 300 years, the ship and its contents lay at the depth of the Baltic Sea until they were found in 1981. Since then, more than 25,000 objects have been salvaged, including Sweden’s biggest find of gold coins. Many of the finds can be seen at the County Museum in Kalmar where settings from Kronan have also been constructed.
