Just Get Started The Power Of Imagination

I was deep cleaning the other day and came a cross a business card that reminded me of the power associated with imagination. I, like most younger sisters, always wanted to copy, be like, or impress our older sisters. Well I was no exception to that rule. My big sister was a businesswoman who owned her own hair salon and she had a staff and a large clientele of customers because she was very good at what she did. Me, being the younger of the two remember one year, many years ago, when I was in my 20s going to a hair shows with her in Atlanta, Ga. (because she told me to.) It was an experience of a lifetime. I had never seen anything like it, especially because I was in the banking business: a blue or black suit every day with a quality white blouse. The hair show was a wonderful experience. We had a great time together. On the third day of the show as we were leaving, some guy came up to us and said, “Hey, let me take your picture for your business card. Give me the information to your business and I will send you the cards.”

PBC INC. | VOLUME 11 | NUMBER 1

My sister said, “Okay.” She had her picture made and gave him the information to her beautiful hair salon. He looked over at me and said, “What about you?” I said, “I don’t have a salon.” He said, “It doesn’t matter, I can put any business information on the card with your picture.” I said, “I don’t have a business.” My sister looked at me and said, “Yes you do.” I said, “I have an office, but I am not doing any business yet.” “It just opened,” she said all while pushing me into the seat to have the picture taken. “Yes you do have a business. Put your information on the paper and get your business card made.” He said, “What kind of business do you do?”

Thank God for the power of

Imagination

I look at my sister as for an ok to tell him I was a real estate investor with a company named Happy Valley Investment Firm. I had no real estate yet, just the real estate I had ENVISIONED IN MY MIND, and I for sure had no investments stored in the vault at my Happy Valley Investment Firm. But that didn’t matter. In my mind, I had it all and more and my sister knew I felt that way. So, she pushed me into the seat to have my card made. Well that day I had no investments. Now, 30-years later, I am happy with the investments I have in the valley, from the mind to Cove. Thank you God for the power of imagination and thank you to my sister for always telling me I was brilliant, even when I flunked the third grade. Remember, sometimes you just have to get started.

Thank you India Arie for getting my conversation started with my sisters. Your great song entitled “A Better People” is the foundational tool I build upon when I am in need of conversation with the many businesswomen I am privileged to come in contact with. We women are soooooooo uniquely made; we are strong enough to hold the reigns for our kings in time of need and gentle enough not to brush his manhood in the process. You know how the story goes. Your husband comes home after a hard day of work and looks at you as though his kingdom is about to be taken from him, and you look into his eyes and say, “What is wrong?” as though your inner wisdom has not already told you that he lost his job. “Today,” he says, “They laid me off today. I don’t know what PBC INC. | VOLUME 11 | NUMBER 1

we are going to do.” And you say, like the wise queen you are, “What we are going to do is be fine.” You walk closer to him and put your familiar, soft arm around him and say, “We will do what we all ways do. You will guide us through this as you have guided us through many things before.” As the queen you are wise enough to know he may have lost his job, but he will not lose his pride of being the man of this house. Not on your watch. You pull him closer and say, “Mom picked us up some potatoes at the store that were on sale and dropped them off to us. Honey, I’ll just add those extra potatoes to this stew and it will last us a few extra days, and by then I am sure you will have found something. Don’t worry baby, we will be just fine.”

“Your husband comes home after a hard day of work and looks at you as though his kingdom is about to be taken from him...”

“Four in 10 American households with children under age 18 now include a mother who is either the sole or primary earner for her family, according to a Pew Research Center analysis of Census and polling data released Wednesday. This share, the highest on record, has quadrupled since 1960.” By CATHERINE RAMPELL Published in Wall Street Journal May 29, 2013

All of a sudden he regains that look of confidence that you have grown to learn to depend on. He reaches out to you and says, “How did you get to be so smart?” And you smile and say, “I inherited the instruction manual of how to be a queen from my mother. Oh, no, it was my sister. No, I apologize. It was my aunt, or was it my grandmother? No, I think it was my sister-friend. You know what King? I can’t remember who. I just know I learned it from a strong but gentle woman.” He says, “She wrote a hell of a manual.”

Sometimes you are flying alone, minding your own business, doing your own thing and thanking God that ever ything is going well and that you are blessed, and all of a sudden it feels like you have been thrust into a seat of an air plane with an “engine failure” light on. So, not only did you get thrust into a seat on the plane, you get thrust into THE seat, the pilot seat. “Oh, hell. What the heck is going on here?” you think. Learn to fly without the use of your instruments, Don’t rewrite the ending of the dream because you incurred a little turbulence.
