Chris McGowan, who grew up in England, became inte rested in science at an early age. He conducted experiments at home—his interests included chemistry, rockets (which exploded more often than flew), boiling up bones to make skeletons, and nat ural history. He wanted to be a vet, but when he failed to get into veterinary college he studied for a B.S c. degree in zoology. After graduating, he becam e a school teacher. Although he loved teaching, he didn’t want to make a car eer of school science, so he enrolled as a part-time graduate studen t at London University, stu dying paleontology. Obtaining his Ph.D. three yea rs later, in 1969, he emigra ted to Canada with his wife and two young daughters to be a curator in ver palaeontology at the Royal Ontario Museum. He also bec tebrate ame a professor of zoology at the University of Toronto. Having enjoyed more than thirty years as a vertebrate paleontologist—“the best job I can imagine”—he took early retirement to spe nd writing. He has written fift een books, mostly on science more time , ranging from building dinosaurs from chi cken bones to an historical narrative of the early history of steam locomotive s. Five books were written for children, the most recent being a novel to exc ite youngsters about science .
