So I’ve been thinking; how do we stay centred or focused in our Christian walk today? It has become more and more easy to "drift away". A more excellent way of living? If there is such a way, and we believe there is, because it is in the Living word, I think we should keep our focus on

You’re in my blood, my veins. In every word I pray. You gave it all for me. I’ll give it all for You. Oh, I’m in love with You. Overwhelmed by You. And if the world is listening, this is my confession. You are my obsession. The last-mentioned living words stream below the bridge of a song titled ‘Amen’ by contemporary Christian pop-duo for KING & COUNTRY. Their latest album, featuring the track ‘Amen’ (p55) was released last year. Yet, it was only recently that I got to experience the exhilarating ecstasy of this earth-shattering song. These gentlemen are INTENTIONAL and they are winning. Big time. And I am swimming in the love of Jesus. Big time.

Needless to say, I am inspired. I am living in the overflow and it’s all thanks to God’s grace for the plentiful opportunity to have engaged with some of the His most sprightly creations. I am so chuffed and honoured to feature these diverse individuals in this celebratory edition of Kréhon magazine.

One year. Four issues. And now you’re exploring the fifth instalment. The new section labels complement our new slogan - ALL OF YOU. It boldly expresses how we love all of you [as a person] and all of you [as a people]. Yes, you are a part of this family. You are welcome to sit with us as we live intentionally. Anatomy (body), Epitome (soul), Divinity (spirit), Affinity (relationship) and Economy (finance) is where its at :)

Liam Barnwell (this season’s cover feature) is a go-getter jet-setter and one of the most wellrounded fellas I’ve met on planet earth. An internship at Nickelodeon is any Junior Animator’s dream! Check out Liam’s adventure on page 89.

Another young animation genius, Daneel Bronner (p35) tells us a little bit about his craft and the art doesn’t run dry as we go behind the canvas of Mischa Ranchod’s breathtaking masterpieces (p42).

As for everyone else, there are too many aweinspiring names to list. But they’re all in here. So go ahead and feast on their chronicles.

Until we chalk again, stay lekker and God bless.

CLOCKWISE History / Current / Future

May is National Inventors Month, a month-long event celebrating invention and creativity.

Eldrick Tont "Tiger" Woods

GENERAL ELECTIONS were held in South Africa on 8 May 2019 to elect a new National Assembly and provincia l legislatures in each province. This is the sixth elections held since the end of apartheid in 1994 and will determine who will become the next President of South Africa.

In case you didn’t know, he is considered one of the greatest golfers of all time, ranking second in both major championships and PGA Tour wins, as well as holding numerous records in golf.

Tiger Woods won his fifth Masters this year with a comeback in the final round. It was the first major championship for Tiger since 2008 and his first win at Augusta National since 2005. While the win was Tiger's fifth Masters title, he almost certainly still has just one green jacket. Unless a golfer has his size change considerably, they only get one green jacket, and that same one is presented to them every time they win.

1851 - John Gorrie received the icemaking machine patent.

1819 - The first bicycles, called swift walkers, were introduced to the United States in New York City.

“Achievements on the golf course are not what matters, decency and honesty are what matter.”

Born on 8 May 2019, the new royal baby is the first British-American prince born into the royal family. Baby Sussex is 7th in line in the succession to the British throne, but he won't be called "his royal highness," as the rules around the granting of royal titles were tightened up about 100 years ago.

WELLNESS

Kurshé from 8-5

KURSHÉ-LEE BRANDT works an 8-5 office job as a creditors clerk at a construction company called Isipani Construction. Mental and physical wellness is very important to her. She is committed to the gym and spending time outdoors in nature. Hiking, a jog or simply an afternoon stroll does it for her. “It sometimes gets tricky with having to juggle an 8-5 job, finishing part time studies plus maintaining a social life,” she says.

DESCRIBE YOUR EVERYDAY ROUTINE AND HOW YOU BALANCE WORK AND FITNESS? A typical day in the life of Kurshé-Lee would be waking up at 4:15am to be at gym by 5am, or getting up at 5:15am to start gym at 6am. I normally do a 45-60min gym session. After that I head home to get done for work which starts at 8am and finishes at 5pm. When I’m not able to get to gym in the morning, I do a 5-8km jog. For me, a jog after work is like having dessert after mains. It’s always refreshing to be able to do a jog after sitting in an office all day. I am currently pursuing a second degree, so I dive into my books in the evenings. Some days are harder and more stressful than others but exercising usually takes off the edge.

kréhon

ISSUE 5

LiFe, Love Balance

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE FORM OF EXERCISE AND HOW OFTEN DO YOU WORK OUT? A jog is like nothing else. It’s like coming up for fresh air giggles. I try to exercise at least four to five times a week. I’ll balance it out between jogging and visiting the gym. On a Saturday morning I normally try and do a park run which is a timed event. I love to measure my progress, but I always make sure that I enjoy the jog for what it is and to not just focus on beating my previous record. As for hiking, I love exploring new routes.

WHAT DOES YOUR WARM-UP AND COOL-DOWN CONSIST OF? Not too long ago I ended up with what you call “runners knee”. So I take my stretching more seriously now. I try and walk for a while before I start a jog and I would always end it off with a few stretches. Stretching is very important.

WHAT OTHER METHODS DO YOU FOLLOW TO BOOST YOUR VITALITY? I try and eat healthy. It’s not always the case, but I do believe a balanced diet is important. I try and make it more of a lifestyle. I also try and keep records of what I eat with my Fitbit calorie counter. At work I always sit with a 1L water bottle and I make sure that its never empty. Every few months I go for a Body Fat Percentage check-up. I also try and do a vitality check at least twice a year.

WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL FITNESS AND/OR WELLNESS GOAL FOR 2019? I would love to do a 5km under 25 minutes. I currently sit at 29:35. I would also like to do my first half marathon road run this year. I would also love to be more strict with my eating pattern and to shake off a few founds. ⓚ

“how can everybody's blood pressure be 120/80 at every age and under every circumstance" (paraphrased). This is quite a true statement in my logic. It is also said that a person can have up to

I believed that people on BP medication depended on the medication way too much, sometimes completely. In the past, our lifelong pharmacist used to advise us to stay off medication as long as possible. He said, "it's the people on medication who were getting strokes and heart attacks". We also had a neighbour who was a nurse. When my BP was too high for his liking, he would force me to take one of his wife's tablets. At other times, he would lie about my numbers and knock early in the morning to hear if I'm okay. I was clearly disturbing his sleep, so I decided to get my own BP monitoring machine. In the meantime I was reading and listening to everything on BP that I could find. I even had a few health care professionals on social media, that I liked - practicing in alternative medicine of course.

100,000 different blood pressure readings on any given day. Now my journey was and at times still is, quite a scary one. Fear being the main culprit. During these periods, I would simply ask my fellow believers to pray with me and for me. I believe that my faith has been tested and I want to believe that I became a stronger person in my 'faith' walk, that is. It would have been so easy to just pop a pill, but it felt that I would have shifted the responsibility of my health to the medication? We have become so used to taking drugs for every single thing which causes us pain or discomfort. I think we very seldom take into account the side effects of these drugs. I now monitor my blood pressure at monthly intervals. My fear has mostly been allayed, and this I believe. I have accomplished, by allaying my inherent fear of dying.

There was a Dr. Biswaroop, whom I particularly liked because of his stance on the nature of our pharmaceutical industry. Another story shrouded in confusion to say

It would be very time consuming for anyone to eat the amount of produce that is in just one bottle of juice. That's where we come in! Raw Squeeze was born in the Anderson family's kitchen in May 2017 where Liovian thought of ideas to incorporate healthy living and eating in her household. With the recent Easter celebrations, we remember what a sacrifice and joy it was for Jesus to be crucified for us. And the only thing that makes sense is that it was his wild love for us that kept him on the cross and wild love that keeps him committed to us even when we fall short. We’ve also started adding original poetry written by Theophilia Collection owner Demi Johnson, on postcards that go with each t-shirt. John-Daniel Josephs Beyond Theology

At the mention of his name, one has to mention the God he worships, because JOHN-DANIEL JOSEPHS is identified by his belief. “This God is liberator, vindicator and saviour,” he says. He is liberated, vindicated and saved. JD (acronym of his full name) comes from a small place in the West-Coast called Vredenburg. Having attended Durbanville Primary and Durbanville High School, his timeline mostly runs between Durbanville and Vredenburg. His greatest passion? Studying the Bible, of course. Theology? Naturally.

TELL US ABOUT THE SEASON IN WHICH YOU’VE OBTAINED YOUR FIRST QUALIFICATION? In 2014 I obtained a Higher Certificate in Economic Development at the University of the Western Cape. This year (2019) I received my first degree in Theology, BTh. It was a very challenging season in which I felt burnt out and drained. Like one being in the wilderness and almost giving up at the brook of the Jordan River. My life didn’t stop there. I regained the strength my soul needed and arrived at this year’s graduation with God on my side.

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY BUSY WITH? I am currently obtaining my Honours in Theology. It surely is a season of new adventures and challenges. This season I have learned that God pays for what God orders, as I’ve received what I have needed in due time. I cannot really define this season just yet, but it is a season of faith for me - personally. The letter of James speaks of how faith without deeds are useless in Chapter 1:14. And this for me is a season of doing instead of sitting and waiting for things to take place.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST CHALLENGING AND MOST REWARDING ASPECT THROUGHOUT YOUR STUDENT LIFE? The most challenging was the unforeseen setbacks and little obstacles. Life’s troubles do not notify you to prepare. When I ran out of money and couldn’t afford bread, I was okay. But failing my second year on varsity was horrible. I learned what it was to work for my own tertiary fees by doing the odd jobs and also working as a student assistant at varsity.

/// FROM PREVIOUS PAGE The reward that came out of that was a desire like nothing else. Studying with passion and living life passionately soon became the order of the day. I began to strive for the impossible, which was to work towards being accepted for the honours degree. The investment in time and studying paid off when I was accepted for my honours.

WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE TO STUDENTS FOLLOWING IN YOUR FOOTSTEPS? Never despise the days of small beginnings. I was rejected twice when I applied to study at Varsity. I only got accepted for the Higher Certificate in Economic Development after the third time. And I made sure I was going to get an A average. That was my breakthrough. I am not academically advanced. I just learned over time to work hard, passionately. Do what makes you happy, because in

happiness you will experience the joy of the Lord. Stay focused and keep a tight schedule, don’t loiter time. Take life seriously, God didn’t create you to be mediocre. Invest time in writing your goals and dreams down.

WHAT IS YOUR SHORT-TERM MISSION AS A POSTGRADUATE ACHIEVER? It is to master my research proposal, that’s my mission.

WHAT DO YOU TO UNWIND OR DECOMPRESS YOUR MIND WHEN YOU’RE NOT IN STUDENT MODE? I listen to jazz, read fiction and try out new cooking recipes.

ANY FINAL THOUGHTS OR STATEMENTS? As South Africans we must not forget that Jesus has solidarity with us in our pain and in the agony we sometimes go through. God takes the side of the oppressed and those who are downtrodden. We must never take the passion of the Cross for granted. ⓚ

The dripping red paint represents the blood of Jesus shed for us on the Cross, the blood which has stained this earth so that we can experience Heaven on earth. The dark line where the blood runs from gives the viewer a focal point, also representing the earth/ land. WHO OR WHAT INSPIRES YOU MOST AND WHY?

What inspires me, is knowing that I am fearfully and wonderfully made and that I can do anything. God has my back. I can travel the globe, meet new people, try new things or even free fall from a bridge… I have the peace that God is with me and I will be just fine. WHEN DID YOU DISCOVER YOUR PASSION FOR PHOTOGRAPHY?

I was selected to attend a 3 week photography boot camp in 2012, where I experienced the most intense and stressful time of participatory. Whenever I think about it I get butterflies. However, I believe that in that moment, I realised how badly I yearned to become a professional photographer. I will never forget the early morning train rides to town, sitting in the class room whilst still pretty clueless about photography, going out on assignments, coming back and editing till 2am and still facing the next morning when your work gets reviewed in front of the entire class… Saying it was gruelling is an understatement. I cried most days but I had to believe that God had a bigger plan me and I had to go through this to learn something significant.

DESCRIBE THE MOST REWARDING AND THE MOST CHALLENGING PART OF YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY CAREER?

Traveling, lol! Working on cruise ships opened my eyes to so many things, places, cultures... it’s been amazing! One of the great challenges is definitely being away from my family and leaving them behind it’s has been hard every single time. Also, the expectations are set very high on ships, so one has to perform above and beyond each time. No excuses!!! Being hardworking and taking everything seriously, I easily become an emotional wreck and often felt like I’m not good enough, but it’s a mind game and it is hard - believe me - I’ve completed 3 contracts and I am still absorbing the experiencing.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR VARIOUS TRAVELLING ADVENTURES?

I’ve been fortunate enough to see many places. During my first 8-month contract, I saw most of the Caribbean and tried water sports like snorkelling in locations like the Bahamas, Barbados, Jamaica, Mexico, St Maarten, San Juan, Puerto Rico, Key West, Miami, Cayman Islands etc. My 2nd contract was the ultimate so far. I got to experience Alaska for 3 months. From Hubbard Glaciers where I went hiking up the icy mountains to Juneau, Icy Strait Point where I went zip lining. A place I’d consider immigrating to is Vancouver, Canada. I’ve also been to Columbia, known for their striking coffee and Panama City, known for their indigenous tribes.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR VARIOUS PAST AND CURRENT ACHIEVEMENTS. DON’T BE SHY! :)

Looking back at the jobs I’ve had, all of them prepared me for what I’m doing now. My first job entailed Customer Service (Identity/Truworths - 3 years). It was the best first job. I then had a Management/Team Development role at Old Mutual for 3 years. That’s when I realised I couldn’t sit behind a desk for the rest of my life. In that same moment I scrolled through Instagram (yes, Instagram, lol) and came across an advert which read; “Seven Seas Cruise Ship Photography - Apply now” and I did, immediately! Within a few weeks, I resigned and got on my first plane headed to Miami for 8 months. Working on ships has opened a lot of doors for me. During my last contract, I stepped up to Portrait Artist - specialising only in Black & White photography. I also had the opportunity to fly to Orlando Florida via an all-expenses paid training package for 3 days at Disney World which was pretty awesome!

urity is a purging affect whereby God purifies us through the forgiveness of sins. In Isaiah 1:18 it says;

“Come now, let us reason together, says the Lord. Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be white as snow, though they are red as crimson, they shall become like wool.” Again, in Psalm 51:7 the Psalter writes and says “cleanse me with hyssop, and I shall be clean, wash me and I shall be whiter than snow.” The sign of the purification of God’s work is through baptism whereby we confess that Jesus is Lord of our life and also taking Holy Communion. These sacraments are marks in the body of Christ. These marks are visible in our lives, our lives bare the visible sign of living a life called to holiness through the Holy Spirit. Purity is a life that knows the ugly side of sin, it has experience of a life filled with lust and grotesque desires. These desires and sin filled lifestyles are convicted in us through the Holy Spirit.

PURITY AS THE WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

This inwardly conviction of sin is a call of repentance by which the forgiveness of sins is administered by the love of God in Jesus Christ who has died for us on the cross. His death is the enabler of sanctification where we are set apart. First we are clothed in righteousness - not our righteousness, we must remember that the righteousness of Christ is our mantel which is spread over us,

And also the purity of Christ that is given to us because Jesus himself was righteous under the law and the law is fulfilled through Him and in Him by the work of the Holy Spirit. The same Spirit, as written by Paul, that raised Jesus from the dead lives now within me and you. The Holy Spirit leads us into a life of faith, because faith will always be the antithesis of a life living in sin. When faith becomes absent, sin overshadows and clouds our vision of being depended upon the Grace of the Lord.

DOES ALCOHOL COUNT? Purity is also a means to practice temperance forfeiting alcohol and cigarettes. But taking note that keeping away from alcohol and cigarettes won’t make you a better Christian and follower of Christ at all. Because sometimes we can get carried away thinking that not drinking alcohol is the will of God, where in the Old Testament there were three types of words for wine in the Hebrew language; shekor meaning undiluted wine, tirosh which is new wine and yayin which is wine that is mixed diluted. In the Bible it is mentioned that we must keep away from strong drink most commonly known as shekor, but in the New Testament we are also reminded that our body is a temple of God.

WHO IS JORDYN JOELLE TOOHEY? WHAT DO YOUR NAMES MEAN AND WHERE DO YOU COME FROM? I was born in the tiny town of Pietermaritzburg in KZN, with some big dreams. My parents were pastors since before I was born, so church was our second home. My name means river, like the Jordan River but with a 'y'. The attributes of a river are similar to my own. I bring new life and refreshment wherever I go. I also have the capacity to make big changes in little ways. A river may seem weak compared to land mass because of its liquid form but if it flows consistently down the same path, it can literally move & shape mountains.

WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE IN AND WHAT IS YOUR DEFINITION OF INTENTIONAL LIVING? I believe in Jesus (could it be more obvious?) I identify completely in him. My life is in his and I’m fully dependent on him. Simple. Living intentionally is the only way to live successfully. Intentionality breeds discipline and discipline breeds growth. All the most important relationships are cultivated intentionally. All the greatest achievements are reached after applying intentional daily disciplines. For example, Training for a marathon requires consistent running practice; becoming a better worker involves refining your skill set with trial and error; Reading the Bible in a year is easy if you intentionally read a few chapters a day every day etc. We can complain about the cards we’ve dealt or we can learn how to play the game and play it well. Intentional living is what makes the difference.

I was awakened by nausea during the early hours of a Saturday morning. Whilst I was running to the toilet, we had a feeling that it could only mean ONE thing. The first test made it official. We were quite overwhelmed with joyous emotions. That morning, when we got back into bed, my husband JOHAN and I couldn’t stop thinking and chatting about our new future.

FRIENDSHIP

Vriendskappe in die hart van God d e u r J AY L E E G E R T S E

MY EERSTE JAAR OP UNIVERSITEIT HET MY PA VIR MY ‘N PAAR WYSHEDE GELEER.

# # #

So ‘n vriendskap gaan spesifieke eienskappe hê, bv:

# # #

WHERE YOU BOTH COME FROM AND WHAT ARE YOUR INDIVIDUAL MOTTOS? [S] I was born in Salt River, Cape Town and raised in a Christian home, however various circumstances would result in a childhood of itinerant residency throughout South Africa. This of course meant that my schooling years were intermittent, consequently moving from one school to the next. I was seen as one with a shy disposition, but quite talkative when comfortable. I've tried fitting in, but there was just no fulfilment in the millennial revelry of the day; which included substance abuse, clubbing, and the rebellious odysseys most teenagers succumb to. Later in life I encountered God's salvific purpose for me, and subsequently came to know Jesus Christ as my Lord and Saviour. By the grace of God, I am still on this amazing

journey with the Lord and relationally devoted to him for the rest of my life. There are many motto's I live by, but the most outstanding one is Biblically inspired, which can be found in Hebrews 12:1-2, and it reads: "Therefore, since we are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfector of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising it's shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.”

[J] I was born and raised in the Southern Suburbs, often moving around due to certain circumstances. Fundamentally, I was raised under good Christian principles, but later in life became rebellious and resorted to a

superficial Christianity. For the majority of my High School years I have professed faith in God, yet never produced any fruit that would identify me as a legitimate Christian. God brought me through a lengthy season of sifting and suffering, a sifting out of the bad habits and influences in my life whilst exposing me to character-moulding stages of suffering that would allow me to bear good fruit and express a genuine desire to seek God. I'm not one to live by aphorisms or maxims, but if I were to have any, these would be derivative of the Word of God. I admire a quote by John Piper, who stated that we ought to be so soaked in the Scriptures that if someone were to cut us, our "blood should be Bibline". Therefore, in a certain sense, I would say my personal "motto" is the inerrant holistic Word of God.

I glanced at him during a praise and worship session, and in that very moment felt wholeheartedly convinced that he was "the one”.

EDUCATION

Young Eagles Christian Academy Principal SHARON HANCOCKS first became involved in Christian Education in 1997 when she enrolled her eldest daughter in the first ACE Christian School which opened in Uitenhage, Eastern Cape. For me this was the answer to prayer and the only way to educate my children. In 2000 her family moved to Cape Town, her children enrolled in Young Eagles soon after that and she started working at Young Eagles Christian Academy in 2003 as the Grade 1 Supervisor. Over the years she taught in various grades until she was appointed as Principal in 2008.

At the end of 2018 Ps Tresville & Heidi Verhoog stepped down as owners and their role in leadership due to Ps Tresville’s ill health, handing the school over to myself and a School Governing Body. With the continued support of parents and the help of the Lord, we hope to take Young Eagles from strength to strength.

WHAT IS YOUR ROLE AS PRINCIPAL AT YECA? My role as Principal, first and foremost is to keep the name of Jesus high in our school and the lives of our learners, along with ensuring excellence in academics. It is very important to ensure we stay relevant in our community and up to date with the latest developments in education. The holistic development of each learner and further education of learners and staff is also a priority.

The ACE curriculum sets us apart from regular schools as it is a Christian based, individualised, personal system of instruction. The Word of God is integrated in the curriculum thereby learners are continuously exposed to scripture and character development. With small classes and individualised attention we can stay abreast of our learners’ progress.

WHAT IS THE STORY BEHIND THE NAME OF THE SCHOOL AND WHAT SETS YECA APART FROM REGULAR SCHOOLS? Young Eagles was established by Pastor Tresville & Heidi Verhoog in January 1998 out of their conviction and the need for Christian Education in the community. Since its inception, Young Eagles has implemented the Accelerated Christian Education programme from America and after the first year received Quality Status accreditation and every year thereafter. For many years the founders were instrumental in the support and service of other schools using the ACE programme in the Western Cape.

The name Young Eagles originates from the Scripture, Isaiah 40:31 and the thinking that our learners are young eagles, being prepared to leave the nest one day and soar.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR LEADERSHIP STYLE AND HOW WOULD YOU RATE YOURSELF AS A DISCIPLINARIAN? I am definitely a strong disciplinarian but many years ago a wise person said to me, “Look beyond the personality and see the principality.” It is important to maintain discipline at all times, however equally important to build relationships with the learners to get to the heart of the matter.

HOW DO YOU EMPOWER TEACHERS TO BE LEADERS AND WHAT CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES HAVE BEEN MOST EFFECTIVE FOR YOU? Focusing on strengths far outweighs focusing on weaknesses. As a team, each one’s strength is utilised to fill in the weaknesses of others. Setting an example is the best way to empower teachers to becoming a leader. From cleaning a bathroom to painting the school, enjoying fun times with learners to class activities.

Again, leading by example is one of the most effective classroom management strategies. Learners do what you do, not what you say. Planning in advance and consistency are also key elements to running a successful classroom.

Because of the nature of the individualised curriculum, its goal setting strategies and procedures, our professional staff have a very close hand on learners and their progress.

Because of the nature of the individualised curriculum, its goal setting strategies and procedures, our professional staff have a very close hand on learners and their progress.

HOW DO YOU INCREASE YECA’S INVOLVEMENT WITH THE COMMUNITY? Every year we support one of the special needs schools in Kuils River with the Casual Day fundraiser and in the past we have visited the old aged home, taken supplies and interacted with the elderly.

We definitely look forward to becoming more involved in future and on a more consistent basis.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CURRENT ACTIVITIES / EVENTS HAPPENING AT YOUR SCHOOL? We recently hosted a fundraising event, “Autumn Dine” which was held under the oak trees on our premises. It was a perfect evening, with an autumn theme and the guests enjoyed a 3 course meal, made by our parents, and live entertainment by musician, Steven Arendse.

We also have a Gospel Concert planned for September. More information will posted to our Facebook page.

A fundraising project that is running for the duration of the year is the Young Eagles Salt & Light Project. This project enables anybody who wishes to, to make a R100 donation per month to the school over a period of 10 months. Anybody who wishes to contribute to this fundraiser can contact our offices.

WHERE DO YOU SEE YECA IN THE NEXT 5 YEARS? A beacon on a hill! A school of excellence, both in academics and cultural, impacting the lives of our learners and community. We aim to remain a quality school setting an example of Christian schools to follow.

APPLICATION PROCESS FOR 2020 ENROLMENT IS OPEN. Please visit our website www.youngeagles.co.za for more information or contact our office on 021 903 6784. Alternatively, visit us at 6 Bosman Street, Soneike, Kuils River. EVERY DAY IS AN OPEN DAY!

REFLECTION

Ferran Bosman Thankful, Beautiful Hi, my name is FERRAN BOSMAN. I recently turned 21. I'm the eldest of 3, I have 2 baby brothers. I am a full-time, final year student, studying BA Accounting at Stellenbosch University.

TELLS US ABOUT YOURSELF, WHAT YOU DO AND WHAT TURNING 21 MEANS TO YOU?

we are and what we strive to be. The people we allow in our lives show our hearts.

If you meet me for the first time, I'd probably be the most awkward person on the planet, but once we actually start speaking you'd see I'm very easy to converse with. I love laughing and it's probably what I spend most of my time doing. I believe laughter is good for you and that's why I always try and find the humour in life.

My 21st birthday was the first birthday that actually had significance to me. I'm not one for celebrating my own birthday, but after some convincing from my parents I realised that 21 is a milestone.

We have so much to be thankful for. It's just one of those very special days where you get to reflect and be explicitly thankful for everything that God has done in, around and for you. Your parents get to show you off and tell you how proud they are of you. You get to tell your guests how important they are to

I enjoy people as well. Just watching them be and interacting with each other. I realised that the people in our lives are very important. The relationships we have are a direct reflection of who

krĂŠhon

!1 08

you and how much you love and appreciate each of them. I know these things should be done every day, but we don't and the fact that I could show my appreciation and be appreciated in such a merry atmosphere is what made my 21st magical for me.

I believe laughter is good for you and that's why I always try and find the humour in life.

ISSUE 5

WHAT ARE THE MOST INTERESTING THINGS YOU'VE DISCOVERED ABOUT YOURSELF RECENTLY? This is a trait that I feel many people have and I'm not sure if it's interesting, but I realised that I love speaking positively into other people's lives. I love hyping people up and making sure they realise how special they are or how great they're doing or how proud I am of them or how beautiful they really are. Our tongues carry immense power and I'll always strive to speak life and to build up others.

I've discovered that I love journaling. Life is so busy and it's very rare that I "find time for myself," so journaling helps me

set time aside for me. I've never really been one for writing, but someone gifted me with a journal for my birthday and told me to write down my experiences, thoughts and feelings to God. And it's beautiful getting my thoughts out on paper and writing down promises from God. I can't wait to look back and reflect on how far I've come and all the things that have happened.

Another 'interesting' thing about me is that I like using figures of speech. 74% of the things that come out of my mouth consist of quotes, idioms or lyrics. I like to refer back to something that I've read or heard before when it's applicable in the situation I find myself. Especially passed down knowledge or wisdom. I love

listening to people older and wiser than me. They know what they're talking about and what I'm going through, so their advice is real and a great guideline.

WHAT DOES RESTORATION MEAN TO YOU? Restoration sounds like energy that is given to someone that'll increase their capacity. It sounds like being repaired to a new and improved state. It sounds like next level energy that is unexplainable and from up above. The type of refreshing energy that gives new life to a weary soul. Something more than just a shallow fix or repair, but this 'process' relates to eternal peace and joy.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR SHORT TERM GOALS FOR 2019?

(We are praying for you, Ferran. You can do it!)

At the moment, getting my driver’s license tops my list. I've been going for lessons, I just really can't drive. My fear is literally crashing and dying or having someone else's blood on my hands. Driving just constantly makes me realise how fragile and small we are as humans and I detest it. I just can't drive.

The plan is to graduate within this year as well. I know we constantly need to be learning and growing, but I need a break from the studies.

Another short term goal (that's not yet on paper) is actually to take up jogging as a hobby, which I know is probably the

easiest thing to do, but I keep finding an excuse not to go for a jog. I love 5km/10km races, just the adrenaline, the spirit and the atmosphere at these races. I love it.

You are more than a conqueror, Ferran. Have a supernatural year ahead filled with unforgettable moments and experiences in every good way. Stay blessed! ⓚ

CAREER

With the Director of Wonder Park

All throughout the studio you can feast your eyes on figurines and artworks of various kinds. There are SpongeBob sculptures created with numerous materials, including one made out of Lego pieces and another built with pencils. We were also taken on a tour through the voice recording room. For me, it was insanely surreal to be inside the same room where the voice actors of some of my favourite shows come to record legendary episodes. Being a huge SpongeBob fan, it was such an honour and privilege to meet the art director of the show, Peter Bennett. He also used to hand paint the backgrounds for the show, which is still being done today, but is touched up and digitally enhanced. Meeting one of the artists behind a show I’ve loved since childhood is quite an awesome experience. I was so grateful for this opportunity. One day after work, Nickelodeon held a lunar new year event, where they served Chinese food for everyone complemented by a dancing dragon performance. At one point in the dance, the two dragons walked amongst the crowd, acting all inquisitive. One of them manoeuvred right up to me while I was sitting on the ground and had my back pinned to the floor while I was recording it. I knew these were people in a suit, but the presence of these mythical creatures felt very real.

Later we got to experience the archive room, where all early character designs, storyboards and several paperdrawn animation ideas (of many years ago) are kept in safe keeping. I’m a huge SpongeBob fan, so I was rather thrilled seeing the hand painted backgrounds that were used in the show. We also got to see some early character drawings of Zuko from The Last Airbender, as well as the planning sketches of the SpongeBob opening sequence. It was a glorious sight which my mind took a while to comprehend. As interns, we also got to join in on a trip to George Washington Elementary. We sat in on different classes, pretty excited to teach learners how to draw different Nickelodeon characters. Seeing eager students getting inspired and having a ball drawing their favourite characters was really fulfilling. Investing into the younger generation is never a waste of time. On the weekend we got to explore Los Angeles. We walked through the Cathedral of our Lady of the Angels - a huge Roman Catholic church constructed with breath-taking architecture. We went down Downtown LA, where we got to see the Walt Disney concert hall (which also boasts phenomenal architecture!), as well as the Broad - a contemporary art museum. It hosts a range of paintings and unique sculptures. There is also a district in Downtown called Little Tokyo which houses the largest JapaneseAmerican population in North America. It is filled with a wide variety of restaurants, stores, and anime merchandise that would make any fan lose their marbles.

Worth a mention is the large and vast food market called Grand Central Market. This establishment serves universal cuisine. Every kind of food one can imagine - from Chinese to Mexican - the list is endless. It is constantly crowded with different worlds on your left and right. A quick refuel for some, a food lover’s paradise for others. Santa Monica Pier was an unmissable highlight for me. When I was much younger, I remember playing a Tony Hawks game where one of the levels were based at the Santa Monica pier. It was quite an unbelievable feeling being there in real life. The two most iconic features on the pier are the Ferris wheel and the whirl-rush rollercoaster! There was also a group of break-dancers called ‘LA Breakers’ who did a live show for the surrounding spectators. Their finale trick included one of their members doing a side flip over four bent-over volunteers, which was just wild! Right next to the pier, on the sand, is Muscle Beach. This section features all kinds of equipment like swings, gymnastic chains and slack lines, with folks just having fun and doing all kinds of tricks on them. We didn’t plan on staying for the sunset that day, as the bus ride home was nearly two hours long. But, due to our endless exploration, we didn’t realise that the sunset had already come to sweep us off our feet. We thought we might as well stay and enjoy the blissful sky. I found myself on a sunset swing on Muscle Beach while watching the sun dissolve behind the pier, forming striking silhouettes. I was capsulated into a golden orange. That particular moment was nothing short of perfect, and I just slurped it all up. ⓚ

Business Secrets from the Bible DEMI JOHNSON has been tuning into the audio version of this book by Rabbi Daniel Lapin. She shares her experience of the book thus far.

/////////////////////// WHAT MADE YOU PICK UP (START LISTENING TO) BUSINESS SECRETS FROM THE BIBLE BY RABBI DANIEL LAPIN? AND HOW MANY CHAPTERS HAVE YOU SCOPED THUS FAR? My cousin has been a great source of support and encouragement since starting the business and it was he who shared the audio book with me. He had been going through it and found it to be very useful in his business journey. I only recently got into reading and find that I do not always have extra time to read many different books.

So, the fact that this was an audio book made it a lot more enticing because I can listen to it while I go about my work. I decided to give it a go because I wanted to know more about how to grow my business and better serve my clients. The fact that it is based on

krĂŠhon

scripture, which is not always seen in business, intrigued me even more. If I am honest, I haven’t kept track of the actual chapters but, I do know that I am about 50min into the audio and the full length of it is 693min. I am finding it to be a lot to process and there are quite a few points that require further reading and a renewed mindset for you to apply it to your life and your business practices. I make notes as I listen and stay in those few points until they have taken root in my heart before moving on. Without doing this I leave it to remain head knowledge which would be unfortunate.

Rabbi Daniel Lapin also allows you to question what he writes and encourages you to do your own research as well. This adds to the time it takes to finish the book but, proves to be valuable.

!1 26

WHAT IS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF A BOOK LIKE THIS? WHO WOULD YOU RECOMMEND THIS PARTICULAR BODY OF WORK TO? Interestingly enough, the author recommends the book to both believing and unbelieving people in business because it is not just about your spiritual walk with God but, offers real practical beliefs, ideas and solutions that anyone can use to thrive in business. He suggests that non-believers will find value in it if they approach it with an intellectual openness.

I would too recommend it to anyone in business, which he explains is anyone with customers, which means we are all in business whether we run our own company or not.

ISSUE 5

WHAT IS THE STYLE/MOOD OF THE BOOK? IS IT AN EASY READ? This book is thought-provoking, encourages open-mindedness and can even be a bit challenging in some ways. The simple language and story-telling from scripture makes for an easy read (or listen, in my case). However, the ground work of applying it to your life will require a lot more commitment and may even prove to be uncomfortable at first. Rest assured that it is worth it.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU MOST ABOUT THIS BOOK? WHAT ARE SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHTS THUS FAR? There are two ‘secrets’ that have stood thus far. The first being specialisation. This simply means that I put all my efforts into one area that best serves my clients. Instead of pushing to do everything myself from running a company to washing my car and mowing the lawn, I focus on running my company and I get someone who specialises in washing cars and the same with the lawn. Specialisation not only keeps

The second secret that stood out was this statement: “The way I am today has nothing to do with the way I’ll be tomorrow.” Humans are the only living creations that have the ability to transform themselves. This truth has seen countless people in the Bible and throughout history go from the gutter to the palace. Romans 12:2 says: “Do not conform to the pattern of this world but, be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” True transformation comes when we change what we believe about ourselves, our environment and others. This left me with the belief that you can only transform a company and its people as far as you have been transformed. Now, you may be thinking but, where are the strategies and big business ideas that will make my company are grow? These were my initial thoughts. However, business is about relationships and how well you communicate your intended message. All of this has its roots in
