APPY AUGUST EVERYONE. It’s lovely to think that we’re inching closer to Spring (but let me not get ahead of myself here). In the month of August, we generally celebrate and honour women for their excellence and efforts throughout history to impact society. We can agree that we certainly have no lack in female role models. History has various accounts of women who challenged and changed the status quo whilst balancing a baby on the hip and getting supper on the table. Some of these are popular names such as Rosa Parks (American civil r i g h t s a c t i v i s t ) , Ro s a l i n d Franklin (Chemist and cofounder of DNA double helix structure), Margaret Thatcher (Prime minister of the UK known as the Iron Lady), Florence Nightingale (Nurse and social reformer), Jacinda Ardern (New Zeeland Prime minister and activist), Toni-Ann Singh (Miss World 2019) and Megan Markle (Duchess of Sussex and philanthropist). On
South African soil we have a host of female pioneers like Winnie Madikizela-Mandela (Anti-Apartheid activist and former member of parliament), Albertina Sisulu (anti-apartheid activist), Amy Kleinhans (First non-white Miss South-Africa), Zozibini Tunzi (Miss South Africa 2019/Miss Universe 2 0 1 9 ) , L i e u t e n a n t Gi l l i a n M a l o u w ( fi r s t f e m a l e submarine officer in SouthAfrica) and many more. The list of virtuous and captivating female voices across the globe is extensive. My list in no way does justice to the significant women in all spheres of life. We can each make a list of women in the Bible, female teachers and lecturers, famous women and women in our own families and communities who made every effort over the years to pave the way for the women that will come after them.
issuu.com/krehon
These are women we look up to and who greatly influences our own character and values. I’m privileged to have witnessed how women in history but also in recent times have led activist campaigns whilst weathering extreme oppression and critique. They added their voices to alter societal rules that oppressed and harmed those on the margins and through their action they managed to initiate a process of liberation. That same process is led and facilitated by their daughters years later, inspired by the same fire and zeal of women hundreds of years ago. A shift in society has taken place with women realising the wealth connected to empowering themselves and each other, women are returning to their authentic identities whilst mentoring and inspiring others to do the same. The women around us inspire us to share our gifts, wisdom and voices to nurture, create, empower, challenge and establish healthier ways of living not just for women but for society at large. Whilst speaking out against injustices women aim to create equal and harmonious spaces where every human being (across gender, age, racial, socio-economic boundaries) can be acknowledged as worthy and dignified.
JAMES 2:17
Recently a new trend arose with women across the globe challenging each other to share a black and white photo of themselves with the caption ‘Challenge Accepted’ and #womenempoweringwomen. The aim of this challenge is for women to not only celebrate and empower each other but also for every woman to celebrate her own worth. Various women still make use of this opportunity to campaign for liberty for oppressed women and activism against femicide and gender-based violence. As we will be celebrating women during the month of August let’s all consider her virtue, value and celebrate how extremely excellent God created a woman to be. A fruitful women’s month to all the ladies. Take care and stay safe.

The 5 Friends You Need to Stay in Touch With Right Now* Maintaining friendships has never been harder, but it's also never been more important.
BY
kréhon VOCAtv
“Social distancing” is poor phrase for what we’re going through right now. What it means is good — people should be physically distancing themselves to protect each other from COVID-19. But socially, we need to be closer than ever — lovingly pouring into each other through whatever safe means we can. That can mean Zoom, backyards or just regular group messages, just so long as it’s happening. But for obvious reasons, it’s probably not happening as frequently or easily as it did
8
Kristen Howerton
in the Before Times. That’s why you need to be intentional about who you’re hanging out with. You need to keep your social circles diverse. Take inventory of your inner circle. Does everyone look, talk, and think like you? If so, maybe it’s time to branch out. There’s no sure-fire formula for creating community, but there are few kinds of friendships you might be missing in your life—and that you might want to pursue.
issuu.com/krehon
1. SOMEONE WHO IS OLDER -AND WISER- THAN YOU It’s one thing to wish you had better habits, more self-discipline or refined character. It’s another thing to find those qualities personified in someone you respect - and follow them as a real-life model. This is not a friend you idolise or envy, rather, it’s someone who is one or two life stages ahead of you and can call back to you tips for the journey. 2. SOMEONE WHO IS YOUNGER THAN YOU If having a mentor to look up to can improve your character, being a mentor for someone else can challenge you to do the same—from the opposite end of the spectrum. There’s no bigger motivator to be more careful in your steps than having a constant shadow. When a friend is looking to you as a living example, you will be challenged to live better—that is, to live a life that is worthy of imitation. 3. SOMEONE WHO HAS A DIFFERENT HOME CULTURE THAN YOU There are few better ways to broaden your horizons than to be in community with people of different cultural backgrounds than yourself. Cross-cultural friendships stretch us outside our limited vantage point as we seek to understand someone else’s unique customs, values and traditions. Such friendships are mutually beneficial. It allows those of us steeped in our own culture to reconsider some of our default societal norms and
JAMES 2:17
values, and maybe even adapt some new ways of engaging with the world. It also makes us more empathetic to global issues when we have friends from various backgrounds. 4. SOMEONE WHO HOLDS A DIFFERENT WORLDVIEW We naturally develop friendships with others who affirm our convictions—whether in terms of religion, politics, moral ethics or any other thought arenas where our opinions come passionately forward. But when we only surround ourselves with a chorus of people who nod and amen at every turn of the conversation, we begin to lose touch with people from other walks of life. It’s easy to make straw men and stereotypes of people who hold opposing views, but when “those other people” are your trusted friends, it’s harder to dismiss their ideas. Instead, you’ll be pushed to listen more honestly and grapple with these differences in the context of a relationship. And not only that, but having friends with whom you hold clashing views can lead to spirited conversations that would have never happened in like-minded community.
5. SOMEONE JUST NEXT DOOR While it’s great to seek out certain kinds of new friends, don’t overlook the potential friends who might already be in your life. Who do you interact with on a weekly, if not daily, basis? Whether a neighbour, a barista at your favourite coffee shop, or a fellow commuter on the train to work, instead of averting eye contact and keeping necessary interaction efficient, consider who you might (safely!) engage in a deeper relationship with. At first, you might think the only thing you have in common is a zip code, but proximity can be a powerful force in friendship. While there are many benefits to diversifying our friendships, the ultimate reason is that it teaches us to love others like God did—unconditionally and indiscriminately. And when we love others not as “projects” or potential converts or friends in high places, but with the love Jesus modelled, our circle of friends begins to look less like the segregated cafeteria of days gone past, and more like the Kingdom.

Known as killer whales, orcas are actually the top predator of the sea, with sharks ranking below them on the food chain. The name “killer whale” actually came about when whaling was more popular, where whalers would say that they are killers of whales. Orcas do eat whales yes, but they themselves aren’t whales, rather the largest dolphin species.

hen it comes down to hunting strategies, you could say that wolves and orcas both attended the same school. Just like wolves, orcas hunt in packs, employing different methods of catching their prey. There is a video (that you can actually watch on YouTube) showing how orcas would create waves to knock off a seal that is laying on an iceberg, and having two other orcas on the opposite end waiting for the seal to fall in. There is another video you can watch that actually shows three orcas hunting down a tiger shark. The tiger shark swims past the camera, and you can literally see the terror on its face. To make a tiger shark, AKA one of the meanest bad boys in the ocean, show fear on its’ face just speaks volumes
JAMES 2:17
of how deadly orcas are. The orcas go on to bite off the sharks fins so it can no longer swim, then eventually feast. Despite this savagery, there has been no recorded deaths of humans by orcas in the wild, but only in captivity. Orcas choose to rather ignore humans in the wild, and sometimes swim around boats out of curiosity.
VIDEO // ORCAS VS SHARK: KILLER WHALES TAKE DOWN TIGER SHARK
Orcas are only second to humans in terms of global distribution, as they are found around the whole planet. They are a very communal bunch, with their young being taught hunting strategies within their first year. If you ever see an orca at a water park doing tricks, just know that that is no place for an intelligent hunting machine.

Upon reflection I don’t think any one of us thought that this is where we would find ourselves. It’s safe to say that we are not the same individuals who started out this journey. We have grown in numerous ways. I guess, we can say that we have not only grown but transformed. GTI (Generation Transformed Inside) youth was grounded on transformation as foundation and all that it stands for and that exact point was GTI’s birthplace. This group is based on the desire to transform a society, communities and a generation that desperately need Christ more than it needs data. A connection stronger than Wi-Fi that would not disconnect and leave them disconnected from this world. The foundational story of GTI youth is the tale of one man with a vision and four young leaders wanting to change the world one Friday at a time.

here’s a saying, “every great achievement starts with a vision” GTI was born in the heart of pastor Clive Williams. He is a well-known pastor in the Stellenbosch area and the Senior pastor of Destiny church which he leads together with his wife Velda Williams. Pastor Clive had a life-long dream of starting a youth within the community of Jamestown. This is the community he grew up in and where he saw a desperate need for the word of God to be shared among the youth. This vision became a reality in the year 2018 when pastor Clive selected four young people in his church to run with this vision that has been growing in his heart. Together Curtis Gordon, Chesray Rhode, Cassidy Williams and Joy Adonis co-found the GTI youth. Under the guidance of pastor Clive these four young people took the first step in the dark and trusting that God would light the way.
JAMES 2:17
Initially GTI started meeting once a week in the house of one of the church family’s in Jamestown. At that stage the youth consisted out of roughly 10 members who all consisted of young people from Destiny church. Word of GTI quickly spread and the youth leaders noticed that youth from all denominations started joining. There was a great need for the youth to move into a bigger building to be able to accommodate a larger group of young people. At this point the youth began discussions to make use of the Maranatha AOG church in Jamestown under the leadership of Rodney Davidse. This was a perfect opportunity for the two churches to work together in growing the kingdom of God. The youth quickly started growing in numbers with ecumenic representation each Friday.

GTI youth has become a safe haven for around 100 young people on Friday evenings. It has grown into a place where not only the love of God is shared but also beautiful friendships. The young people have found family in one another. It has been incredible to see how youth who come from vastly different socio-economic circumstances and communities are able to look past their differences and find common ground. Over these four years we have seen many tears, laughter and significant transformation. Transformation in the lives of children that have come to know God as their Father and saviour. We as youth leaders are fortunate to see firsthand how God has transformed the lives of many young people. The key scripture GTI youth was inspired by is Romans 12:2 which says, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—His good, pleasing and perfect will”. GTI youth is not perfect but we know that we serve a God who is perfect. He does not call the qualified but qualifies the called. GTI is a youth where the undiluted word of God is preached and where transformation starts from within.

Daniel Walker. The prince who couldn’t save princess Dawn from herself. Yet their fleeting affair brought forth an heir. Chloe has no idea that her most prominent client, Hildegarde is related to Lance’s biological father. Lance is blissfully unaware that his late mother’s best friend Deidre is the only person alive who knows who his father is. Deidre overheard Chloe and Hildegarde’s conversation. She is taken aback at Chloe’s consideration to accept Hildegarde’s job offer. Even more so, when she heard the name Daniel Walker.

[Opening Scene: Lance’s Loft] A precious stone consisting of a clear and colourless crystalline form of pure carbon, the hardest naturally occurring substance. Lance had been glancing at this diamond ring for the last 45 minutes. Pondering on his permanent commitment to Chloe, he finally reached the point of asking her to make him the most ‘assured’ man in the world. Although his restless mind kept trying to predict different destiny outcomes at each turn of the sun, he begins to feel the excitement of becoming one with the one who loves him. Meanwhile, Melvin whips up a quick breakfast. He calls this the “snow-pan.” An omelette recipe with sun-dried tomato and an avalanche of parmesan.
[Scene 2: Chloe’s Complex] Since her sister Logan moved out, Chloe has been feeling rather edgy. Being bored and alone in your apartment is not always fun and relaxing. Especially when you have a boyfriend (so-called) who tends to be very preoccupied with his own character development. Whilst going through her wardrobe, Chloe’s phone starts ringing. Caller ID - Hildegarde Judah.
…he begins to feel the excitement of becoming one with the one who loves him.
Lance: (entering the kitchen) Morning, uncle Mel. I see you’re winning today. Melvin: Almost done. Grab the plates. There’s hot coffee. Lance: I actually feel like having a cup of Milo. Thanks. Melvin: Ah, you and Milo. The only thing you loved more than rugby, at some stage. Lance: Yeah, even when I was doing homework. Melvin: You mean, while your homework was being done for you? Lance: (chuckles) I still worked really hard, uncle Mel. Come on. Melvin: (soft sigh) I won’t argue with that, son. By the way, I’ll be out today. Lance: Cool, what’s your POA? Melvin: POA? Lance: Plan of Action… Melvin: Hm, I’m flying to Joburg. This afternoon.
JAMES 2:17
Lance: No way. I thought you’d be staying here for a bit longer? Are you heading back to Switzerland from there? Melvin: Not yet. I just thought I’d go see my old family home one last time.
19
Chloe: (answers the call) Hildegarde, good morning. Hildegarde: (pleasant smile) Chloe, darling. A jolly good day to you. My assistant fell ill. So, I just decided to call you myself. Are you available for brunch? If not, cancel whatever you have planned for today. I have the most incredible news to share with you. Chloe: (blinking eyes) I could move around some of my appointments. However, if this is about the job offer, I’ve decided toHildegarde: (interrupting) -oh crumbs! I’ve got to take this incoming call. It’s rather urgent. See you at 10:30 sharp? Bye for now. Chloe: (neutral sigh) Oh well… Another call is coming through. This time from the security office at the front gate of the complex. Her parents have finally arrived in Wharflock. They’ve missed their daughters. And they want final clarity on where Chloe stands with Lance.

Cryptic Mountain [Scene 3: The Gradient Hotel] After discovering the irregular items in the parking lot storeroom, Deidre had been subtly investigating who the space could be occupied by. She’d asked Zaida to handle the matter as discreetly as possible. But, knowing Zaida, the entire hotel staff probably know about this situation by now. Zaida: Aunty D, the stuff is gone. Like it was never there. Deidre: You went to check? Zaida: Yes. After my smoke break. Deidre: Seriously? You’re still smoking? Zaida: Sorry, Aunty D. I tried quitting, but it takes time, you know. Deidre: You didn’t tell anyone else about this, hey? Zaida: I told Quinton, he laughed and said I’m only fooling myself. Deidre: I asked you not to tell anyone, Zaida. Zaida: Oh, you mean- oh, no- I didn’t tell Quin- I was talking about quitting smoking. Deidre: Good. And not a word to anyone, especially not Lance or Chloe. Zaida: Don’t worry, Aunty D. I promised Lindani I wouldn’t tell anyDeidre: Lindani?
Chloe: Well, I have given it some thought. A lot of thought, actually. And I realised that it surely would open up an entire expansion of what I can offer. There’s really nothing more to say. I- I am ready. I am willing and I would like to confirm that I am up for the challenge. (smiling) I’ve even spoken to my parents this morning. Hildegarde: Oh, crumbs. I’m going to cry. I’m so happy for you! Welcome to the Windstone International family! (gives Chloe a cheerful hug) Frankfurt is going to love you! [Scene 5: The Stream Coffee Bar] Lindani is ready to end his afternoon shift at The Stream. Deidre is in the mood for some confrontational carrot cake. She takes a seat at her favourite table, awaiting service without lifting a hand. Lindani: (getting ready to leave) Hey, Miss Dee. I’m off to get ready for my next shift at the hotel. Jason will be with you shortly. Deidre: (calm, collected) Sit down, Lindani. We need to talk. Lindani: What’s the matter, Miss Dee? You look feverish.
[Scene 4: Brunch on Bree] Chloe is stunned at Hildegarde’s irrefusable job offer.
kréhon VOCAtv
Hildegarde: (taking a sip of her kiwi tea) Chloe, you are absolutely perfect for this job. I know you to be a wise woman. I’m not saying that you should be limited to this magnificent opportunity. But you know that something like this does not come around every year. Not even a leap year.

issuu.com/krehon
Deidre: Lindani, when were you going to tell me about your spot at the hotel? Your little hideout? Lindani: Whoah, Miss Dee, what are you talking about? Deidre: You’re wearing the exact same camouflage hoodie I found in the storeroom on level P1. Look, my boy. There are so many -in fact- too many people struggling out there. So many young people who are trying to find their feet whilst battling to find themselves. I want to know everything there is to know about you. You’re one of my employees. You work for Mr Lewis -Lancewho is like a son to me. He owns this coffee bar, as you know. He also has shares in the hotel. We can help you. But I first need to hear your story.
[Scene 6: Lance’s Loft] On her way to meet her sister Logan and their parents for supper at one of her favourite restaurants, Chloe stops by Lance’s loft to drop off an important file. Not knowing what her plans are, oblivious Lance pours two glasses of champagne. He plans on surprising Chloe with tickets to an intimate theatre production, where he plans on making it official. Chloe: (exits the lift into Lance’s loft) Lance: (in awe of Chloe’s beauty) You look like a dream. I’ve missed you. Chloe: (smiling) Thank you. I brought the file and one of your cuff links. It must’ve slipped off at the event the other night. Lance: Oh, no biggie. You know I have like 300 of those. Chloe: (sees the Champagne glasses) Are you and uncle Mel celebrating something? Lance: No, these are for us. Chloe: Oh, I actually came to tell you that I won’t be able to make it tonight. Lance: That’s fine. We can go another night. You’re all dressed up though. Chloe: Dinner with my parents. Lance: Are they here in Wharflock? Why didn’t you tell me? Chloe: My mind’s been really busy. Let’s meet for breakfast tomorrow morning? Lance: Sure, we can do that. But I could join you guys now as well? Chloe: Why? We’re just gonna have good old family catch up. Lance: Yeah, I know. But I want to askChloe: I need to pick up Logan. Can we talk tomorrow? Lance: Let’s elope. Chloe: What? Lance: I’m willing, if you are?
Lindani had no intentions of admitting to anything anyone may have suspected about him. He also never felt guilty. He had no reason to. He was simply seeking shelter. Lindani: I’m sorry Miss Dee. But I really have no idea what you’re talking about. I got this hoodie from a chain store. Ain’t nothing unique about it. There are plenty all around. I really need to run right now. My sister’s working late tonight. I need to fetch her two kids at the pre-school. I don’t wanna miss the taxi. Deidre: So you’re going all the way home and then plan on coming all the way back to the hotel? Lindani: Yes ma’am. That’s my routine. Deidre: I think you should take the night off. I’ll speak to Lance. Lindani: No! That’s really not necessary. I don’t want to skip my shift for no good reason. Jason: Are you ready to order? Deidre: Yes, thank you. Just a cup of rooibos with ginger. Lindani: (sarcastic smile) Nothing for me, J. Thanks. I’m off. See you later, Miss Dee. (exits the coffee bar)
