A LIFECHANGING AWAKENING
MAKE YOUR MARK ON THE KRÉHON TIMELINE.
During the time I met Mark Zion (Editor of Kréhon), I was at a place where I was learning to trust God in greater and deeper ways. It was a great blessing to partake in such Godly, wisdom-filled conversation with Mark, over a good cup of coffee. That interview changed my life. It is amazing to witness how God continues to work in my life, especially following my partnership with Kréhon, which has been so impactful and quite an awakening experience. I thank God for Mark Zion and Kréhon. I have never read a magazine that is so well-structured and beautifully spiritually led. The whole framework is really amazing. I recommend it to anyone, anywhere. I appreciate it and I love it! - JOHNNY NEL

all want to be our true self, but a lot of us end up in the trap of being people we are not to please people who don't
like us or paying attention to us. The truth is, being fake is more expensive than being real. It will cost you your joy and peace. If you are around people who require you not to be YOU, those people are not right for you. The right people for you will not require you to be a false representation of yourself in order for them to love you or accept you. It doesn't matter if they are a friend, colleague or family. God doesn't even expect us to be perfect, but to be honest with ourselves, so why are we trying to be perfect for imperfect people or perform for people who are too busy trying to get someone else’s attention? Trust me, it's draining, it will suck the life out of you. Authenticity is about being yourself, not just the Sunday version of you that looks like an angel, but also a broken side of you that can’t be masked.

We’re tired of doing the dance for the hug or doing things we hate for the approval of others. That’s really exhausting. It leads many to suicide. I would rather be rejected with my flaws than to be accepted for not being me. There is a reason why God didn't like the Pharisees and hanged out with sinners. The Pharisees were fake, the so called sinners were real. God is more drawn to real than fake. We need to be real, that’s the only way we can be healed and free. We need to accept who we are, with all our mistakes. Yes, being yourself sometimes hurts, it will cost you fake friends, social status or your reputation, but that’s the only way you can give birth to your authentic self. Like the shell of a seed needs to break to give birth to its true self, so do you. Honesty is the key to authenticity. We need to be honest with ourselves and confront the demons that are destroying us

efore we get into this article, let me ask you this question: how many times have you felt “left
out” of your friends’ lives because they did not share certain news with you? Say your friend had a child, bought a car or a house, got a job, relocated or whatever you would consider significant, and you happen to hear of this through the grapevine somewhere (i.e. Facebook)… how would you feel about that? Would that not outright get you in your feelings? Now imagine that being your child! Okay, let’s get into the Word for a second:

the girl. Now all wept and mourned for her; but He said, “Do not weep; she is not dead, but sleeping.” And they ridiculed Him, knowing that she was dead. But He put them all outside, took her by the hand and called, saying, “Little girl, arise.” Then her spirit returned, and she arose immediately. And He commanded that she be given something to eat. And her parents were astonished, but He charged them to tell no one what had happened.’ Luke 8:50-56 NKJV. I particularly like that these series of events are recorded in detail in the NKJV because it shows you God’s (Jesus) initial intention to include the parents of the child in the miracle. As, I believe, God intends to do with us and our destiny friends as well. What was meant to set the family and the crowd apart is relationship. However, for them to get to see the promise unfold, they had to believe. When they failed to believe, and rather mocked the Word of God over the girl’s life, they were asked to leave the room of her miracle. This makes me think of all the times when I knew for a fact that God said a resurrecting Word over a certain area of my life and the people who had my “best interest at heart” discouraged me from believing the word. We often hear preachers and speakers say that purpose isolates us, but I beg to differ… What if it is our disbelief that robs us of the opportunity to see our loved ones’ purpose unfold? Maybe you are alone because God would not allow your destiny friends’ unbelief to contaminate your miracle.

sex
is often viewed as a taboo subject to talk about and even to mention in Church amongst believers. It has caused so many misunderstandings amongst young believers that often young people who follow Jesus have viewed sex as something bad because grown-ups dare not speak about it with them. This has often led youths into paths where education about sex was not meant to educate them about sex at all. There is also a growing concern amongst youth and young adults about getting the right partner to marry one day, not only a concern but the dread to be alone all by yourself. Loneliness is a major attribute of depression and I think that there is a reason for human beings to have partners to spend their time with here on earth.

Why? Because ‘they say’ millennials aren’t loyal, and yet - I feel they are. Look, I’ve worn myself out for loyalty many times (literal breakdowns guys?!)… Worn myself out for causes, people, and things THAT DON’T HAVE my best interests at heart. I’m working on my boundaries. But, this post isn’t about that… Look, I feel that it’s not that millennials aren’t loyal - it’s that they’re often loyal to the wrong causes, wrong things, and the wrong people. There’s a recently popular phrase, “Cut off anything that doesn’t serve you.” Well, YES, if you’re talking about unforgiveness, hatred, selfdoubt, low self-esteem and toxic relationships. And, HELL-NO, if you’re talking about people (in general), family, God (even when what he says isn’t what you #like)… and a few others…

SPOIL THE ROD, SPOIL THE CHILD The High Court ruling prohibiting parents from physically disciplining children is a disappointment of the year for me. I believe the “spare the rod spoil the child” is not a frivolous line of scripture but an effective way to correct, instruct and to shape a child’s character in conjunction with affection and the right measure of physical discipline.

By taking that away, we eliminate the value and the effectiveness of child rearing. Therefore, I stand outraged with the other parents; we have added to the problems we are trying to eradicate by applying a blanket ruling over exceptional cases. Time-out or naughty corners for the children of 2019 is not a punishment but a privilege. Parenting is hard and by hard I do not mean the ‘immortal’ sleep deprivation caused by the flood of frightening events on the news or the fear of the unknown and the never-ending whining screams of a child; but the daily grind of handling another soul’s mind and heart from inception. How do we do it, how do we handle the daily grinds of young souls in need of love, rebuke and discipline? Parenting is a real struggle. Even those claiming to be experts confess that they too find themselves defeated

This is not to say we forget the joy a child brings, children remain precious gifts, and they are bundles of joy. Which is the reason the Bible places so much value in the rearing of a child; they are special gifts that will inevitably become adults. An adult than can become anything (a rapist, a murderer, or by the grace of God, an adult that is acceptably normal).

You just never know only God who has formed us know the path which is why he must inform and guide our parenting. He stands Sovereign and knows best; he has warned us that it simply will not work if we spoil the rod, hence ‘Spare the rod spoil the child’. For parents to effectively discipline and transmit values that will cultivate respect for God and society the ‘rod must not be spared’.

tough keeping up with the school commitments, a whole set of standards and the isolated loneliness caused by lack of openness especially for the single parent. Parents navigate through their special struggles because, as I said, there is no manual. We depend solely on the grace of the Lord. So then, with all the realities painted; how do we as a country claim that we know best. After all the chaos, we are capable of doing to each other how do we decide to spare the rod. In a world that lacks moral compass, in a world that is in need of God’s mercy, in a world full of spoilt and cruel adults, how do we decide to raise more? ⓚ

KRÉHON ● TRUTH ↘ DEMOCRACY
On the 23rd of October 2019, the Democratic Alliance leader Mr. Mmusi Maimane effectively resigned as leader from the DA and subsequently resigned from the party itself. In his speech he remarked that together with his wife, they realised that the DA was no longer the party to move South

Africa forward. Following this announcement, many political leaders shared their views about this resignation. Alas, this is not the point of this opinion piece. Essentially, this tells the tale of our current political space and therefore, the question that many South Africans are asking, and particularly young South Africans is what happens next? What happens to our future? What is the way forward? Young people in South Africa are asking these questions to disrupt the narrative of corruption and asking these

questions to frustrate the spaces to erect leaders of stature and integrity. In a time, such as this, unity is what we require most, when our leaders are boasting in one another’s demise, what message does this send to the youth and most importantly, what does this mean for the church?

The work of God expressly states that in unity - in togetherness - that’s where the Lord dwells. Additionally, where there’s unity, true meaningful work, driven with purpose for a genuine end goal in sight, can take place. Let us be inspired to be voices and beacons of change. Let us NOT be deterred by what the political landscape looks like. If we do this as young people, we will become despondent and eventually lose hope. Right now, the young people in South Africa need hope, as our future is at stake. God has given us wisdom and thus God continues to show us as young people in South Africa, that now is our time to arise, unite and be heard. Exciting. Eye Opening. Depressing. Magnificent. These are some of the expressions used by Mitchells Plain native and UWC Graduate, Dr. Lauren Swartz as she reflects on her 4 graduations. She began her studies in 2008 and eventually, gracefully obtained her PhD in Biotechnology in 2019. God, community and counselling ensured that Lauren would remain steadfast as her territory was being enlarged throughout the growth she had experienced thus far.

EING the second youngest of 4 siblings, Lauren had a blast growing up. One of her most nostalgic memories include that of her father, who used to sell fruit and vegetables at
the Epping Market way back. “As a kid, I spent a lot of time with my dad. We used to drive up and down in those carts at the market, it was so much fun. My dad liked taking me everywhere,” she says. Another fond memory takes Lauren back to primary school, where she’d often receive the sought-after gold star on her forehead for being one of the best readers in class. “Those things evoked the academic in me and my parents were very supportive throughout my schooling career,” she adds. Lauren had always dreamed of becoming a medical doctor. At first, TV series like CSI not only introduced her to the concept of forensic science, but also sparked her determination to actually become one of those white-lab-coat characters in real life. However, following her undergrad in Forensics, Lauren chose to investigate another medical channel instead. “I was then introduced to Post-Graduate studies. I was so happy with my honours which lead me to aim for my masters.”

They never felt like they needed my contribution towards the household more than I needed my degree,” she says. Lauren also highlights the sweet support of her sisters on a day that she was quite ill. “I was laying on the floor, trying to write my thesis, whilst having severe headaches. IN WHAT WAYS WERE YOU SURPRISED THROUGHOUT YOUR STUDIES OF NANO SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY? Specifically, during the nano-science degree, I was completely amazed by the potential nanoparticles have to be incorporated into several applications. Particularly, in the medical field, the many advantages presented to overcome limitations of current diagnostic and therapeutic methods. One such example is the potential of nanoparticles to facilitate what we call ‘’targeted-drug delivery’’. What this means is that the nanoparticles are able to go directly to the tissue/organ where an abnormality/disease exists and very intelligently treats the patient by releasing the medication only where the abnormality is presented. This is very important because so many patients suffer adverse side effects because commonly used medication is unable to distinguish between healthy and unhealthy tissue; which means that the medication exerts it effect on healthy cells and as a result patients suffer in one way, while healing from another. Nanoparticles are able to do this because of their small size and large surface area and ability to be finetuned with other biomolecules that can target and treat the patient.
I WAS COMPLETELY AMAZED BY THE POTENTIAL NANOPARTICLES HAVE TO BE INCORPORATED INTO SEVERAL APPLICATIONS

DESCRIBE AN AVERAGE CAMPUS DAY IN THE LIFE OF DR. LAUREN SWARTZ? Upon arrival, I make my way to the cafeteria for a cup of chai latte – they make really good chai’s. Then I proceed to take a moment to read scripture and breathe before I start any work. I get here a bit earlier than most, so it’s usually quiet and a good time to think clearly. I’m a little old school, so I write out experiment(s) for the day in my lab book – I guess this is where some doctors lose their ability to write legibly ha-ha. Once that’s done, I setup and perform the experiment(s) for the day. In addition to my own lab work, I perform duties and responsibilities assigned to me; and further supervise and assist students in the lab with their respective projects. Generally, a day’s experiment fits into the bigger scheme of things, so once I’ve reached the objectives for the day, I plan experiments for the rest of the week by reading the literature and consulting with my supervisor and peers.
WHAT IS YOUR GENERAL ADVICE FOR FELLOW/YOUNGER STUDENTS IN YOUR FACULTY? As with anything in life, sometimes there are tough days in the lab, but the good days usually far outweigh them and make it all worthwhile pushing through to the end. Also, surround yourself with people to talk to, whether it be for scientific advice or to offload. You don’t have to feel like you’re doing this alone. I can’t stress this enough because no one talks about it, but I’ve seen many students struggle, leave, become anxious, depressed and fight through all kinds of mentally unhealthy states. Please, do yourself a favour, share both the victories and the challenges. No one will know unless you invite them in. Finally, choose a career path that will make you happy. Change career paths if that’s what you wish. Just be happy and at peace with your decision. ⓚ

When home owners, Charl and Carol Gous set their eyes on a new home, they knew exactly what they had in mind. It was a mere matter of roaming closer to the hot spot of their f u t u re s a n c t u a r y. T h ro u g h t h e guidance of prayer, the lamp on their feet brought light unto the path that led them to this peaceful and balmy farm house in the urban woodlands of Somerset West - north of Cape Town.

WELCOME HOME SUMMER 2019
Carol, former educator and ingenious interior decorator at heart, alongside her engineer husband, Charl were more than willing to perform the necessary tasks to transform this space - pulling out the stops of the old interior - to reimagine ever y dimension into immaculate sophistication. Being all grown up and out of the nest, the Gous offspring, AnrĂŠ (28, married to wife Dominique), his brother Imar (26) and their sister Monet (24) visit often. Whether to find solace during a trying time or simply to breathe and unwind upon a comfy safety net. Much like when they were kids, they enjoy spending time with their parents around the kitchen counter, and of course, stretching out at Sunday lunches around the exquisitely hearty dining table.

The open-plan dining area, with its elevated floor, is believed to have been the original end or entrance of the home, prior to architectural extension. THE KITCHEN
The heart of the home, pulsating and inviting like a friendly neighbour, is a mini marvel to behold. This kitchen was another proud moment for Charl and Carol, as they had extinguished the former red and black mosaic display for a bright and beaming platform, becoming synonymous with the open air of a hundred acre farmstead. To the left, an outdoor space, perfect for candle light dinners under a starry tree, greets

the potential of exactly that. Although Carol - a housewife - only cooks when she needs to, she enjoys spending time in the kitchen. Especially when her children are there to keep her company. Charl, also a creative carpenter and handyman, designed and installed the pillars holding the kitchen island himself. The carpet on the kitchen floor is a unique yet functional attribute, as it eliminates the unwanted noise of constant footsteps. The same purpose is applied to the carpets right throughout the home.

MASTER BEDROOM Entering the master bedroom, also hosting a hidden bathroom, one forgets momentarily that you’re still under the same roof. Change is as good as a holiday and this room is a beautiful breakaway, having undergone a few significant alterations to become what it is now. Yes, that’s right. Carol ensured that her chandelier would make its appearance, one way or another. Intentionally lowered from the ceiling, this masterpiece became the zealous crown of the room. The rest of the room’s interior, like white chocolate, decadently solidifies the space, creating a stable environment for a good night’s rest and velvety dreams.
ENTERTAINMENT More than just a TV room, we find an interconnected sanctuary where blissful peace and exuberant entertaining co-exist in a space created with love - for the love of family time. Here we are tickled with a nuance of Narnia, as a broad cupboard from Bali makes a chesty statement, highlighting the rest of the furniture with their eclectic finishes. It is diagonally angled from the almond bookshelf, confidently centred upon the opposite wall. Every single element encapsulates the agricultural mood of the room. This is where the Gous family gather for those cinematic chills or laid-back braais.

BACKYARD Last, but certainly not least, we enjoy the interplay of the TV room, overlooking the backyard pool, stretching towards the kitchen. This exterior is a private resort, away from the bustling streets. Located right next to the kitchen, the double door instantly introduce this platform, which is great, especially when the kitchen becomes too hot. Like similar areas, this one allows for relaxation, deep breaths and positive reflections.

1. WHO IS JUSTIN GROEP? WHERE DO YOU COME FROM AND WHERE ARE YOU GOING? In a nutshell, I am a people’s person and I enjoy people. I grew up around people, in a place called Boys Town, my father Derrick Groep was the principle there. I grew up around young people with a lot of problems and issues. I learned a lot about understanding the dynamic of those people. I’m a Christian, a believer that believes in purpose, impact, starting businesses to improve people’s lives. To bring about development. And then tie that into the Kingdom of God. I am heavily involved in my church, Hillsong South Africa. I used to work inside of a church building for a church. I no longer work in the building, but still see myself in full-time ministry. I use the vehicle of business and creativity and it’s all about connecting people and connecting them to their purpose, seeing it come into fulfilment. I am currently working in the field of coffee, photography and web development. Building business that use education, that will create jobs. Through relationship, I connect people to Jesus and church communities. I’m a Kingdom builder. About God. About Jesus. I am a husband. Both my wife and I are passionate about making that impact.

2. HOW DO YOU START YOUR DAY AND WHAT KIND OF PEOPLE ADD ZEST TO YOUR DAY? I start my day pretty early. First things first is Matthew 6:33, literally thinking on it every morning. I have a habit list. I check it off every day. I read scripture. Talk to Jesus. Turn around, give my wife a kiss. Pray with my wife. Think about how I can apply scripture. How Holy Spirit speaks to me for the day. Most days start pretty early. I don’t really eat at home. I work in a coffee space, so I’m always up very early. Inquisitive people add zest to my day. Those who are friendly and open to conversation, wanting to learn. 3. WHEN DID YOUR PASSION FOR COFFEE START BREWING? WHAT LED YOU TO BECOMING A BARISTA? I started drinking coffee at university to stay awake (ha-ha). I watched a super interesting TED Talk by Steven Johnson, around how coffee and coffee spaces could contribute to one’s period/ phase of enlightenment. That led me to think, ‘what if I could hang out in coffee spaces’. For the first time I realised that I could be in a space where I didn’t belong, but I could belong. Because I could order one thing, often the cheapest thing on the menu. But I could be among conversationalists, business people, entrepreneurs. I loved how coffee was a vehicle connecting people. Being in the same coffee shop for long enough, I realised that consistency and a delicious cup is something that’s hard to come by. Especially when the barista doesn’t know what he’s doing. But I realised that I could go to coffee shops to meet people, and that good coffee is something completely different. What hooked me was the potential to create jobs in coffee. Coffee is among the Top 5 World’s Most Traded Commodities. It changes from time to time. While working full time, I did a part time Barista course. I started making coffee, started buying gear and eventually became a Barista.

4. WHAT ARE YOUR PERSONAL FAVOURITE COFFEE TYPES? IS THERE A RIGHT WAY TO TAKE ONE’S COFFEE? Coffee is viewed as one thing when it should be viewed as many things. Like the different seed types of grapes. The different nuances in how the seed types are grown. Pinotage, Pinot Noir… There’s much complexity hidden in the world of coffee. I work in specialty coffee. My favourite

7. WHAT HAS BEEN SOME OF THE MOST VALUABLE LESSONS YOU LEARNED AT BARISTA COMPETITIONS?
to tell little personal stories. I’d capture moments for myself and I realised I can actually
Competitions are pretty much about becoming really focussed on one thing for a long amount of time and going really deep. I learned that one could master one thing really well due to the amount of focus, pressure and deadline that surrounds competition. We can all learn from that. We would become a lot more creative and innovate within those boundaries. There are limitations, which I think is important for creativity. You really try and innovate within the stack of rules. There are restrictions - which help the guys do really well and push the envelope.
get better at this thing and help other people capture these moments. Now I’m using photography as a means to tell this story of people and the cool things people are getting up to, but also telling the stories of God’s creation. The third element would be telling the story of where God’s creation and people connect through photos. My other hobbies include cycling, beach hangouts, chilling, reading. I’m really passionate about learning, so I devour podcasts. And I really enjoy time with my close boys as well.
8. TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR LOVE FOR PHOTOGRAPHY? WHAT ARE YOUR OTHER HOBBIES? Photography started before I made coffee... I grew up with my Dad, he had a Nikon F40 or 50, he really liked taking photos. Sometimes photos would come out, sometimes they wouldn’t... It took a certain amount of skill to capture a moment really well. There was this weight that these photos carried. They carried memories and moments. They would take me back to a particular moment in time. They would evoke emotions and I just loved how photos could tell incredible stories. So over time, I’d up my gear and just try

9. WHO IS YOUR INSPIRATION AND WHY? DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE BOOK AT THE MOMENT? My wife, her resilience and her creativity to create something really amazing for our family and for the company she works for. It’s really inspiring to be married to someone like that. I Listen to quite a number of podcasts, like Levi Lusko, he’s a preacher, communicator, he’s really inspiring, in terms of how he dives deep into the topics he discusses. A bunch of entrepreneurs that I find incredibly inspiring, in terms of how they create businesses that are having real impact, include companies like Chick-Fil-A that are all about service and value-based business. Most of my reading right now is German, as I’m currently studying German. But one of my top reads of the last while include, Shoe Dog: A Memoir by the Creator of NIKE, Phil Knight. I really enjoy the story of how Nike was created and the perseverance and the relationships involved. It’s very interesting how they were formed over time. Another favourite of mine is The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg, because I want to be effective in what I do and how I empower people, how live out the purpose and the things God has placed in my heart and what that requires me to have really good habits and listening to the Holy Spirit. 10. ARE THERE ANY OTHER SLANG TERMS FOR COFFEE THAT PEOPLE IN GENERAL MIGHT NOT KNOW OF? WHAT ARE YOUR PERSONAL FAVOURITE TERMS? I wouldn’t use ‘cup of joe’ or ‘mocha java’ - pretty old school. If you want to sound smart/savvy, use terms like; single origin, third wave, batch brew, drip coffee or alternative brewing. Those aren’t slang words, but Jargon for hand brewed filter coffee. My favourite is Batch (short for batch brew), which is like old school filter, probably made by specialty coffee roaster, probably making it better, using a better brewer, not reheating it. So it tastes really nice. ⓚ

I had to drop out of my studies and took a detour which lead me to working for 3 years. Thereafter I decided to return to varsity and complete my studies. The university was reluctant to accept me again, but God graced me with a new beginning to start over and make a difference. Three years later, my desire has grown to become one of the best educators for this generation. To see them excel in their academics and helping them to become better individuals in society, that they may be able to be the difference God called us to be.”

Anthonia declares that her life is not her own and that she chooses to glorify God in everything she does, by being a living sacrifice to the Father, giving expression to who He is. “God keeps me grounded. He has been faithful throughout every phase of my life - from the lowest point of misery and failure right up to my successes. He is so intentional in revealing His grace double fold. For He has called us for a time such as this. To walk in Sonship. This propels me to move forward and to keep going.”

2020 VISION + MISSION Mc Cloen’s vision for 2020 includes walking in purpose by inspiring people around her to be a better version of themselves and becoming the best they can be. “2020 is my final year of studying towards my degree. This is why my vision is being an example to children in our communities. Proving to them that our struggles do not determine the outcome of what we put our mind to.” Anthonia believes, that if we are driven and make Christ the centre of it all, our circumstances do not stand a chance to stand in the way of our dreams being fulfilled. The lack of father figures and role models in our communities has had its fair share in the debilitation of our children and youth’s aspirations, but can no longer be seen as a handicap to the potential of their future and success. The alarming reality of our kids in these particular neighbourhoods has been a long time coming. The majority still express themselves in

narrow-minded ways due to that being the only way they know how. The right blueprint and mentorship is a dire foundational need. Therefore, as an aspiring educator, Anthonia believes that Christ has graced and allowed her to enter into this profession to create change and show learners the bigger picture. “It's such an honour to work with and help shape the minds of our future generation. I thank God for entrusting me with such a huge responsibility in this time,” she proudly professed. Kréhon wish to thank Miss Mc Cloen and all purposedriven educators for their passion and sacrifice to do more than what is expected. Well done, Anthonia, for persevering and being willing to serve in school, the community and the country at large. We pray God's best for your qualification and your radiant future. ⓚ

WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST PLEASANT AND MOST CHALLENGING PARTS OF BEING @IRST-TIME PARENTS? L+A: The most pleasant part is simply gazing non-stop at this beautiful boy we have co-created and watching him grow up. Seeing him smile for the first time, hearing him laugh and experiencing all the firsts. He was colic the first few months, which was the most challenging. It made us extra tired, due to lack of sleep. You learn to adapt and that is what makes the human mind and body so fascinating. WHAT ARE THINGS YOU LIKED & DISLIKED FROM HOW YOUR PARENTS RAISED YOU (AND WANT TO REPEAT)? WHAT ARE SOME THINGS YOU ABSOLUTELY DO NOT WANT TO REPEAT? L+A: Our parents raised us to have respect and we love and appreciate that. They fuelled within us the hunger to learn, explore, discover and to think for oneself. We would definitely want to impart that to Leo, that he may make informed decisions. We are committed to introducing Jesus to Leo in the most real, raw, authentic and unapologetic way. We grew up with a religious mindset and beliefs that were passed on to us during our upbringing and that is one thing we (will continuously) oppose with great battle.

JAIME SIADIE (20) is an ambitious, energetic young man with a heart to serve. This is showcased with the faithfulness and loyalty he displays at his local church, Sowers of the Word, where he serves as a youth Bible school teacher and youth leader; as well as in his devotion to God's word as a second year Bible college student, in the hopes of gaining an understanding of who God is, and in doing so, being able to then represent God well among people. Jaime's walk with the Lord began seven years ago at the age of thirteen and since then, his love for the things of God grew tremendously. At the point of his conversion, he attended the Christian Union which was offered at his high school whilst he was still a student there. He also began attending Friday night youth services regularly. Otherwise, Jaime is your typical twenty year old youth, who will pretty much eat just about anything (except for nuts) and loves to have fun. In his downtime, Jaime enjoys listening to hip-hop music, watching cartoons, he loves keeping fit, and enjoys a good cup of coffee.

WHO IS PIETER GOUWS? WHERE DO YOU COME FROM, WHAT DO YOU DO AND WHERE ARE YOU GOING?
MEET PIETER GOUWS A HEART FOR THE EARTH. A SOUL LIKE THE WIND. A SPIRIT OF FIRE.
My full name is Pieter Barend Gouws, I am 26 years old and I think most important of everything is that I am a devoted Son of God. God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit is the one being I truly and deeply love… For God I have a deep respect and awe because He is just so different, there is no one like Him. Jesus is my closest friend, brother, but still my King and The Holy Spirit is my help, comforter, my wisdom and my fire for Life. I was born in Malawi, grew up in Mozambique. My parents were missionaries. I have an AMAZING father and mother. Supportive, loving, free and brilliant examples of Godly beings. The reason I am what I am today is because of God’s grace and my awesome parents. “I honour you mom and dad for what you taught me. Thank you Jesus for giving me them, they are AMAZING!” I am currently a Life coach at PNXglobal, A Christian college, where one can study Performing Arts, Theology and do an amazing Gap year. I disciple and mentor students to become the men/women God intended them to be! I am also a qualified professional musician, dancer and actor. I am very blessed with talents and gifts and I am grateful to say I play guitar, piano, drums, bass, sing and recently started with violin. I do different styles of dancing and I do acting as well! What makes me different is I am an artist but not like other artsy people at all! I am very fond of extremes sports like kitesurfing, white-water rafting, skydiving etc. I love high adrenalin activities!

WHAT DID YOU HAVE TO OVERCOME THIS YEAR AND WHAT HAS BEEN SOME OF YOUR GREATEST HIGHLIGHTS? This year was quite tough! Many challenges on all levels. Working with people is NOT easy. I have been discouraged many times and hurt by people’s words and actions. Sometimes it’s very easy to feel you are not making any impact in anyone’s life. You are a failure and maybe you should just do something else. But God always picks me up and has given me the capacity to love these people even more and just show them favour even if they reject, despise or disrespect me. PLEASE SHARE A BRIEF SUMMARY OF YOUR TESTIMONY?
p ict u r e s CL AUD I O C M A R I N U S
You know, I was a bit crazy in my BC (before Christ) days. I was a typical party animal. There was never a weekend that went by without me consuming alcohol. I lived very reckless. I would often wake up the morning after a wild party, not knowing how I actually got home, which happened on more than one occasion. I was very lost, I kept on searching for something to fulfil the void inside of me. I had a lost identity and I was feeding off people’s opinion of me. What/who they thought of me was one of the biggest struggles and fears I had. During all this, my mom found this au pair program and suggested that I go. I would never have chosen to go, but eventually did to please my mom. Funny enough, I dropped out of school in grade 11 and I needed a National Certificate to apply, but I applied anyway. I then waited almost 8 to 9 months before I got matched with a family that lives in Holland. On the 11th September 2012 I jet off to this new, unknown adventure. I never knew how to ride a bike, so after many blue marks and embarrassing moments, I kept standing up and learned how to ride that bike like a pro. Whilst living in Holland I travelled to a few countries such as; Rome, Belgium and Paris. Returning to South Africa after a year of traveling, I instantly fell in love with my Mother city. I knew I was going to be part of the change, I knew I was going to be part of the remnant arising. I remember one night on one of my last clubbing adventures after having pre-drinks at a friend’s house, I sat at the end of my mother’s bed and told her ‘I know Jesus is calling me’, I know Jesus is going to use me but I am not ready to let this life go. A few months after this I had an amazing encounter with Dad, which changed my life and led to become who I proudly am today. I love Him so much. I love that He is the way, the truth and the life.

HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE A VICTORIOUS PERSON / AN OVERCOMER? We tend to think that one has to be like a palm tree through storms. But I believe that a victorious person/overcomer rise up after every storm. It’s okay to go through the motions, it’s okay to break down and cry. But it’s never okay to stay down. Get up, dust yourself off and embrace the lessons you have learned, allow it to change you in a positive way. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY ARE KEY INGREDIENTS TO AN AUTHENTIC FRIENDSHIP? Foundation is Christ first, I can only be the best ME through Christ. I can only be the best support system, encourager, friend through my full identity in Christ. Secondly, never place any expectations on a friend, it will ruin any relationship. Growing up I always wanted a circle of friends like I have now, I always wanted to project my expectations on them and it never worked out until I surrendered those exceptions to Christ. And wow, do I have the best community. Our relationships flow with life. We celebrate each other’s individuality and gifts and partake of it. WHAT IS YOUR UNIQUE TAKE ON PUTTING TOGETHER AN EVENT? DO THINGS ALWAYS GO AS PLANNED AND WHAT TO DO WHEN RESOURCES ARE LIMITED? Strong Note: events never goes as planned, there is always a little something that can go skew. Planning a good event requires studying the pros and cons and pre-planning a solution to it. I would always have a back-up company who does something similar. For instance, it’s not a good idea to include spicy or dairy cuisine at a summer’s function. If you really want curry (in bulk for a function), you’d need to have it prepared a fresh 2 hours prior to the event. Otherwise it will go sour and turn everything upside down. Nonetheless, it is important to keep your guests happy, despite what goes wrong. Always go the safe route. #NoCurryInSummer (lol). Choosing the right theme or venue is also very important. Make sure you maintain the theme throughout your event. This will ensure a memorable time.

Dominic Arendse is a 20 year old, 3rd year Psychology student at UNISA. When he’s not training his mind or body, Dominic is out capturing life’s priceless moments as a freelance photographer (read more on page 48). His other interests include photography, competitive cycling, general fitness and wellbeing. He also enjoys playing the guitar and listening to all genres of music. Dominic, who currently resides in Kuilsriver, in the northern suburbs of Cape Town, firmly believes that if you don’t place yourself in the position to do something, you’ll never do it. “My training philosophy is, if you don’t start, you’ll never finish. This is a generic and cliché term that I apply to every aspect of exercise, like waking up in the morning when you have the option of sleeping in, punching in 60 minutes on the treadmill instead of 30 minutes,” he says.
SUMMER 2019
129
For anyone looking to up their game of tone, this is Dominic’s take on punching in some extra fitness motivation. ////////////////////////////// Students typically enjoy the subjects they’re good at, and in that manner Dominic enjoy workouts he can master. “Because of my competitive cycling background, I have a stronger foundational strength in my legs and this makes me enjoy leg day, running, cycling and cross-fit,” he says. Studying through UNISA provides Dominic the convenience of productive multi-tasking. With more time on his hands he gets to run his photography business without it feeling like a weight on his shoulders. As for the weight in his muscles, the extra time allows him to work in those morning workouts and prepare healthy meals that usually require more time. “My favourite hours to workout are 8am till 10am, Monday to Friday.”

EMMA, WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT SUMMER AND WHY? Summer is such an exuberant season! Everyone seems happier, people indulge in being social and getting outdoors, our beautiful country is utilised in all its glory and fresh/healthy

meals are the number one option. This is what summer represents in my eyes. Health, nature, activity and overall wellness. The season to enjoy one’s body to its maximum.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE KEY EXERCISES YOU DEEM FIT IN THE MORNINGS? Morning training for me personally is always a form of cardio or high intensity training. This boosts my metabolism and gives me a great start to the day. I do however encourage my clients to do anything physical in the mornings. This can be a walk on the
3
beach, trail run, gym session, group class, home workout, weights, functional, Pilates, yoga, the list goes on…
WHAT FOODS ARE THE MOST AND LEAST BENEFICIAL FOR A SUMMER BODY? I always encourage whole and fresh foods. This should be all year round but summer is actually slightly easier as the fresh produce options are awesome and munching on salads & fruits or drinking smoothies and juices are all easier in the heat. I recommend avoiding the processed and sugary foods. Of course if you are being social, enjoy a cocktail or treat but be mindful of your options and portions.

Wearable, can translate from day to night and white literally suits everyone. Lastly, a sexy pair of shades. If you are a guy that enjoys a pair of sunnies then rock that look!
WHAT HAVE BEEN SOME OF YOUR FAVOURITE HEALTH PRODUCTS THIS YEAR AND WHAT WOULD YOU RECOMMEND TO GUYS AND GIRLS THIS SUMMER? My favourite products at the moment are the Pharma Freak Water Enhancers. These are sugar free water flavourants that encourage consistent water intake. There are various flavours and I take them everywhere with me. My next favourite are Grenade Bars. These are high protein and low carb. Absolutely delicious, low calorie, plenty of flavours and they even have Vegan ones. Mix in the chocolate. Sprinkle the gelatine over the orange juice in a saucepan. Let it stand 1 minute to soften. Stir over low heat until the gelatine has completely dissolved. Set aside to cool for 30 min. Beat the cooled orange juice into the cream cheese mixture. With the mixer at high speed, beat the cream in a medium bowl until stiff. Use a rubber spatula to fold the cream into the cream cheese mixture. Cake: Preheat the oven to 180˚C. Butter a 9 inch round cake pan. Line with waxed paper and butter the paper. Sift the flour, baking powder and salt in a large bowl. Beat the butter, sugar and vanilla in a large bowl with electric mixer at medium speed until creamy. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating until just blended after each addition. With mixer at low speed, gradually beat in the dry ingredients, alternating with the milk. THE DEENO EFFECT
Eldino Borcherds, best known as Chef Deeno, is a young and seasoned chef with a zest for the art of food. Having spent ample time in the kitchen since he was 5, this kitchen blazer from Knysna in the Western Cape, became too good at licking bowls during his dishwashing observations, watching mom and grandma whipping up sweet storms. It wasn’t long until he began combining ingredients as a young boy, who grew up to become a man of appeasement in prestigious kitchens, locally and internationally.
THE TRIUMPH ISSUE

27 years old, Deeno is still madly in love with his home town, Knysna. He describes it as a unique and happy place with exceptional views. Prior to becoming a top chef, he also specialised in personal training and gym coaching. A great combination that makes him a w e l l n e s s connoisseur. Currently based in Stellenbosch, Deeno’s personality counts in his favour when expressing his passion. “My passion for food entered the world with me. It is as unique as I am. That is what makes customers visit your restaurant once more, and rate your menu as number one. Even if your place has an incredible view, you have to make the meal You (unique). For instance, when I see something on Instagram, I implement my own thing. I am eager to please,” he says passionately. “People have always honoured me for what I do and my accomplishments. When you have passion for something, it’s all
about the wow factor. When I put a plate in front of you, I love telling you about where it came from, the thinking behind it etc. Straight from my heart, onto the chiller, then onto the plate,” he adds. This is evident when admiring some of his own creations f e a t u re d i n t h i s a r t i c l e. ( Se e t h e Salmon Delight and Prawn Salad). It was in Dubai where Deeno realised that no one can plate a salmon tower like he does. “You need a fine eye for good food. People feast with their eyes first. When it looks good, it tastes good.” When opting for comforting food, it all depends on your mood. Deeno s u g g e s t s v i b ra n t colours, something that would you put you at ease. “I would implement a fine dining effect to top up your evening. If you’re looking for a specific mood, I can set it up for you,” he adds. Personally, Chef Deeno’s comfort chow is a toasted cheese sandwich classic.

Chef Deeno currently operates under PJ Vadas located on the Spier Wine Farm in Stellenbosch. His day starts at 9am and ends at 9pm. “I go in the morning and lit the smoker. During the day, I make sure that my prep is sorted and that my section is neatly organised, before my service starts,” he says. “When I have time, I go and check out some other places to find inspiration and then I return with my own ideas to implement ‘the Deeno effect.’ At age 18, Deeno was part of an exchange program in Germany. This is where his passion for food saw him choose a career in it. “When I arrived in Germany, the first thing I ate was fleisch salat which is basically a chicken mayo salad accompanied by a fresh piece of artisan bread,” he says. Upon his return to South Africa, Deeno did a 3 year chefs’ course in Port Elizabeth. Followed by a fine dining internship at Radisson Blue. His career took off in Knysna, at a caféstyle restaurant called île de pain. A place close to Deenos’ heart. He recommends it to anyone. He particularly enjoys the rustic feel of the restaurant, defining it as homey and hearty with good food and service. A few of his own dishes featured on their menu as a special. Deeno describe the owners Markus Farbinger and his wife Liezie Mulder has incredible inspirations. “Chef Marcus is a Master Chocolatier who is very passionate about his food. Even his poached egg is jawdropping. He has taught me a lot of things. He’s always been there, bringing comfort and making sure that everything is up to standard,” Deeno says.
encourages snacking during the day whilst drinking enough water. Deeno also priorities the use of fundamental ingredients to make any dish shine. He adds, “If you prepare a piece of steak, don’t overwhelm it with a lot of other ingredients. Make it the way you enjoy it and do your best to make that steak shine.” ⓚ

STRENGTHENED BY FAITH, FEULED BY FLYTE FLYTE is about more than simply selling supplements and apparel. We promote a lifestyle that encourages the bridging of faith and fitness in a culture that finds it difficult to see how the two connect. The world of fitness is saturated with messages of individualistic empowerment and encourages self-centred gain for self-advancing purposes. We exist to glorify God by being a light in our industry and to create a community of people who believe in a lifestyle of faith, family, and fitness. We seek to encourage physical health as a means to achieve even greater spiritual health. We shift the emphasis away from mere personal gain to impacting the lives of people who might find themselves in a dark place and in need of a light.

THIS PAINTING IS ABOUT RIPPING OFF A FAÇADE THAT IS DISPLAYED TO PEOPLE, SO THAT YOUR TRUE AUTHENTIC SELF CAN SHOW 24/7.
While on a youth camp recently, we had an opportunity to creatively express ourselves based on what we’ve received on the camp up until that time. I had come to the realisation that I was tired of being inconsistent in my pursuit after God. Things like being consistent in prayer, in studying the word, and maintaining intimacy with God. Some days would go really well, but with other days the cares of life would take over, thus resulting in my pursuit being inconsistent. In these moments, I would rock up to meetings and pretend as if everything was on track spiritually, thus putting on this mask that everything is fine. For me, painting this was a declaration being made that no longer will my inconsistencies be covered by a mask, but by being my authentic self at all times, that even my inconsistencies will be a thing of the past. And ultimately, God wants each and every one of us to be authentic in every aspect of our lives, at all times. Faithfulness toward God never goes unrewarded. May we never come to a place where it says about the Pharisees in Matthew 23:28 “Even so you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.” ⓚ

What started in 2013 as an idea between two big dreamers has morphed into a closely knit family of friends who have joined hearts on the journey of expressing their love for Christ and people through music and service. Though neither of the friends envisaged what would come of the endeavour, they are adamant that each moment in their time together has been perfectly crafted by God.

Their name, AlmostSunday, was derived on a Saturday evening when someone noticed that it was almost Sunday. The phrase stuck, and the band has since been well received by peers and wider audiences that have seen them in action.

S
Six years later, AlmostSunday keeps fanning the flame for true worship experiences. Following their super successful 2019 album launch, I had the privilege to sit down with the band who primarily functions as a family. It is quite significant that their first gig was at a wedding, which symbolises the integration of families. Is there a deeper meaning behind the name of the band? “No, not really,” they say collectively. I personally love the idea that there is no complex theology attached to the band name, knowing that the heart of AlmostSunday is to express the King of kings in all His glory and sovereignty. As with every family, this one experienced many highs and lows over the years. The intricacies of the past year was no exception. This was the soil that produced their first album, titled The Journey. Geraldo says, “When we first started the band, we all went through something. We had some doubts about the band - due to our various situations. That is where The Journey came from. Our struggles formed the band and the songs,” he adds. When Geraldo presented the band’s first song, they felt as though they weren’t entirely ready. It took a couple of loving nudges to help them think otherwise. Haylie states, “Had we not been surrounded by the people who believed in us, our mentors, we might not have gotten this far. Lloyd adds, “Not everybody is blessed to have knowledgeable people in their lives. We were encouraged to

start, record and release.” At that stage, they did what they came to do. Their first single, Rejoice came forth and saw the release of the full album one year later. In light of The Journey, AlmostSunday was very intentional about making the album launch intimate as opposed to impersonal. Haylie says, “To just put the album out there wouldn’t have made sense for the type of album we’ve put together. As a band. we’ve
WE DISLODGED THE NOTION OF BEING LIMITED BY NOT BEING FROM THE SAME CHURCH always picked each other up and thus wanted to portray that connection via the launch as well.” “The launch celebrated everybody in our lives, their love and support,” Lloyd adds. The rest of the band attest to the great impact made following the launch and album. The vision of the band is mainly geared towards community. Luwadlin says “We’ve always been passionate about reaching out. We’ve often ministered at Youth Camps, concerts, coffee bars. We didn’t even worry about finances. We traveled to places like Worcester and Ceres - upon invitation. Geraldo adds, “We put our heart out for God. We never had to scout for gigs. We were always invited and Spirit led.” Lloyd says “we were never motivated by money. We simply loved making music, wanting to make a difference.”
THE TRIUMPH ISSUE
The members of AlmostSunday are planted in different spiritual homes. They mention how people were blown away by the fact that such a united band is not based in one particular church. “We dislodged the notion of being limited by not being from the same church. Now everyone’s on the do-it-for-the-kingdom wavelength. The bigger picture,” Haylie states. Lloyd adds, “We are very intentional about family, genuine support and connection. All this flow through our music.” When reflecting on their first single Rejoice, the band highlights how the song made sense for what everyone was going through at the time. Haylie mentions “I was in a weird space during the writing period of the song.” Producer, Jason Skippers was very influential
in the execution of Rejoice. They fondly remember how they all listened to the song together for the first time, entering into the atmosphere it creates. Overall, AlmostSunday has a burning heart for authenticity. They exercise this as they evaluate their evolution. Lloyd passionately says, “There’s a knowing how much we’ve grown. Our worship is super intentional. We used to just do songs and be cute, but now it’s all about eternal impact. Luwadlin adds, “Our relationship with each other grew a lot. We celebrate anniversaries we invest a lot in each other’s lives. Always there to support. To help. We are more than just a band. We are family. It’s amazing to see our love for one another.”

SOME OF THE BAND MEMBERS’ PERSONAL FAVOURITES ON THE ALBUM
LLOYD [Good To Me + The City Is Yours] Good To Me really resonates with me, especially after turning 31. It just keeps reminding me of how the Lord is so good to me. The City Is Yours is a special one for me, having co-wrote it and just knowing declaring “We give our lives to make you known.” LUWADLIN [City Is Yours] “For me, there’s only one: The City Is Yours. I remember listening to the song on my way home after work. It really spoke to me. I even shed a tear in the car. It’s just such a relevant song in a relevant. That’s my number one. Come what may, the city is Yours.” GERALDO [Downcast + The City in Yours] Downcast and The City is Yours is my most played tracks on the album. The City is Yours actually portrays the very beginning of AlmostSunday. How the band started acoustically, which was something different in comparison to how Worship was generally being done in churches.
164
THE JOURNEY
HAYLIE [Up And Away + The City in Yours] “I wasn’t a big fan of Up & Away at first, but the more I listened to it, I really enjoyed it. I easily partner with words, so it became quite catchy. I’m very intentional about the things I say. The City in Yours was rather appropriate for the onslaughts we faced even after writing the it.” HERE IS MY MICRO REVIEW OF THE JOURNEY BY ALMOST SUNDAY: Track 1, You Are There tells a story of a joy and comfort in the knowing that God is watching us always. This catchy and bouncy track moves one to a higher place, creating a swift shift in the mind and spirit. You won’t easily tire of listening to it. What a blessing. Our Father is always there. Never forget that. Track 2, Up And Away is really encouraging. It stands firm on the assurance of what we believe in. It’s about clarity, faith, prosperity, faith, trust and faith in the Lord and His blessing. Yes, faith multiplied. It’s also quite a refreshing jam, perfect for blissful road trips. “For I know the plans you have for me,” Amen! Track 3, River of Love is a refreshing taste of living water. It’s a song of liberation and surrender. It paints a picture of the Promised Land. I am mesmerised by the escalating electric guitar following the second chorus. It’s as though I’m being supernaturally elevated above an upward stream of glory. The river of love is a wonder. Yes, it is.
THE TRIUMPH ISSUE
Track 4, Emmanuel (feat. The Mezzanine Floor) is so powerful. It comprises of the most beautiful words and diverse musical elements. The build-up in the song effortlessly forklifts ancient mountains. A giant of faith in the omnipresence of the Father. And just like the violin at the end, the mere shadow of God’s presence keep us warm and give us strength. Forever. Track 5, Rejoice (feat. AJ Fortune) is a love letter to Christ. A romantic dance with the King. A duet with Holy Spirit. It’s like a piece of jewellery combining the other gemstones on the album. It’s like sitting under a peaceful palm tree, whistling praises with quirky doves. It speaks of our identity in Christ. To rejoice regardless of any hinderances. Glorious. Track 6, Good to Me takes one to the secret place. Where the noise is left behind. Where everything else become wisps of smoke in comparison to the Father’s faithfulness. Gratitude makes the world go round in this beautiful and blessed delivery. Then we march in confidence, triumphantly, straight into the
fullness of God’s love. “Your goodness knows no end.” Track 7, Downcast focus on the antonym of the title, elated. How Jesus make us walk on air, picking us up from the valleys we grow weary in. Like the other songs on the album, this one is filled with confidence in who and what we are in the Lord. “Jesus, I will praise You, my King. Jesus, You have won the victory.” The City is Yours (feat. Pursuit) is the final track on the album. It is live and lit like a city on a hill, beyond the shadow of a doubt. This one could easily have passed as the title track of the album. It holds the beauty of believing, belonging and longing for spiritual transformation on earth as it is in heaven. “Let Your glory fill this city, as our streets are filled with praise…” The essence of the song continues to linger in the heart of the listener, much like the everlasting word of God, the same word which the song and the entire album dwells in. In conclusion of our time together, I’ve asked each member of the band to share 1 line of hope for the time we currently live in: Haylie encourages believers to truly seek to know Jesus. Lloyd highlights identity. Knowing, that as Christians, we have the ability to bring heaven to earth. Luwadlin believes that we must see each other as equal. And Geraldo hopes that we still experience God in a seemingly Godless world. To God be the glory for Almost Sunday, The Journey and everything He has in store for the future of these obedient worship leaders. Thank you to the band and extended members for pouring out your hearts and pouring into the Body of Christ. We salute you!

THE SONGS OF THE CITY WORSHIP EVENING took place on the 30th of November, at the Father’s house Christian fellowship. This worship evening managed to reconnect hearts to hope and new meaning. From the first hello to the last goodbye, God’s goodness and presence could be felt in that place and it followed me home. The authentic songs, written by the artists (Pursuit, Mégan Schilder, Jacques Julius, Kyle and Natalie and Almost Sunday), reflected the heart of the Father for His children. These songs emphasised the themes of hope, identity and God’s character. The evening was defined by dancing, shouts of hallelujah, smiles, prayerful tears and hands lifted high. What tugged at my heart was that everyone present probably had different motivations for being present, but we all were connected by one common thread, God the Father, Christ His Son and the Holy Spirit. The petitions to God wasn’t just for the country or the city, but it was

also for our families. As I listened to the words of the songs during worship, I thought, this is what it feels like to be affirmed and crowned in His presence. As the music died down and we were making our way home, this declaration stuck in my mind, “Loving One, this City is Yours.” ⓚ

SINCE THE PHOTOGRAPHY TECHNIQUES AND EQUIPMENT CHANGE QUICKLY, IT IS IMPORTANT TO STAY UP-TO-DATE. WHAT DO YOU DO TO ALWAYS KEEP UP WITH THE TIMES? I have that one photographer that I look up to when it comes to posing and new techniques. His name is Taylor Jackson. He photographed 67 weddings in one year,

NOWADAYS ALMOST EVERYONE HAS ACCESS TO DEVICES WITH WHICH IT IS POSSIBLE TO TAKE GOOD PICTURES. WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHER AND ANY OTHER HOBBY PHOTOGRAPHER? I am part of a photographer’s group with 20 photographers including Kaylin Petersen Photography and Charlene D. Edwards Photography and we have this “Uncle Bob” at all most every gig, this is the name we give to the family member that brings along their camera and takes pictures when we were actually paid to be there. The results speak for themselves, the professional photographer takes time to think about the posing, the composition and spends many hours after the event editing. It’s just

something you can’t get from “Uncle Bob”.
WHICH ONE IS YOUR FAVOURITE LENS AND WHY DO YOU PREFER IT? My favourite lens is a lens I am fortunate enough to own, it took me 7 months to save for, I have been using it since July (2019) and I really feel that it has somewhat elevated my style. It is the Sigma 50-100mm f1.8, it is special because it is able to compress and separate the subject from the background. (Another reference to the picture of the boy in the road).

YOU MENTIONED TAYLOR JACKSON BEING ONE OF YOUR INFLUENCERS. ARE THERE ANY OTHER PHOTOGRAPHERS WHO INSPIRE YOU? Surprisingly enough I draw the most inspiration from one of my first clients and not a photographer, a lot of what makes a photographer successful is their character and their values and I aspire be known for having those values. Here’s what happened. It was 2015 and I have just been hired by a family friend to be the second photographer for my very first wedding gig. They had hired a professional first photographer and I was the back-up photographer hired for the groom prep and to focus on pictures of the family. However, during the church service the main photographer was very arrogant, told me to get out of his way and stay out of his way. The groom, who I hadn’t met before that day, noticed this and went to the main photographer and said, “this is my cousin and he’s new to the game, please give him a few pointers, I’d really appreciate.” This honestly left me in absolute awe. This man is getting married to the girl of his dreams and he takes a moment out of this special day to help out someone who he hasn’t met before. This was the first and most effective stepping stone in my career and I owe a lot of my success today to Nathan, the groom.

WHAT, IN YOUR OPINION, IS MOST IMPORTANT TO CONSIDER WHILE SHOOTING PORTRAIT PICTURES? When shooting a portrait, the most important thing I focus on, is focus. Portraits are usually taken on a prime lens, this is a lens that can blur the background of the image. However, it is possible for a photographer to miss focus. The most important thing to focus on in a portrait is the subject’s eyes, because the photographer and the subject might move, you have to make sure that the focus doesn’t shift to the nose or ears.
IN YOUR FREE TIME, WHAT KIND OF PICTURES DO YOU LIKE TO SHOOT AND WHICH ONES DO YOU AVOID? In my free time, I like to delve into car photography and street photography, photographing people going about their everyday life, for example the lady walking down the street with her shopping bags or the taxi guard helping an elderly lady across the road to the taxi. Things I would avoid doing are those generic close ups of flowers in the garden or close up images of insects. These were my only options back when I was in 11th grade and couldn’t leave the house as much as I would like. ⓚ
WHEN SHOOTING A PORTRAIT, THE MOST IMPORTANT THING I FOCUS ON, IS FOCUS.
