NEW EPISODES OF THE PODCAST ARE ALSO RELEASED EVERY FRIDAY AT 13:00. OKAY, LET’S GET INTO THE CONVERSATION.

Hey Swifter! Welcome back to Konversations with Kay-Dee. I’m very excited about this issue! Mostly because of your wonderful responses after the first one. If you’re just joining the SWIFT fam, welcome. So, what this is, the Konversations, is like the greeter that meets you at the doors with drinks and hors d’oeuvres. It’s supposed to be a small taste of what is to come, but if you choke on some shade here, don’t worry. Keep reading, you will find something edible somewhere haha. Be sure to also check out the weekly podcast version on these Konversations at anchor.fm/konversations and on YouTube at bit.ly/ youtubekonvos. We, Mark and I, are also live on CCFm (107.5fm in Cape Town or radiosa.org/ccfm for the extended fam) every Friday at 11:20.

Let’s talk about PARENTAL GUIDANCE!

issuu.com/krehon

YOU KNOW HOW OUR PARENTS always used to say, “You live in my house, then you live by my rules”? Well, what happens when you no longer live in the house? OR, when it comes to leaving their house to build your own home? On a normal day, to what extent should parents have a say in their children’s relationshipping decisions? Now, let me qualify this. While I think that children of all ages should be heard by their parents, I am not going to prescribe parenting tips for teenagers when I have never raised one. So, this conversation is focused on millennials

(people who are currently between the ages of 22/23 and about 38/39 – no, we are not kids! And 2000s are not millennials lol). So, last month we spoke about the realness of adulting, and part of that is getting Boo’d up and living your best life. This month we are

But, my friend slowed me all the way down. Now, back in the day, melanated kids didn’t get to have a Bae unless he was about to come with his uncles to ask for your hand in marriage. Maybe this is why my mind runs to marriage o’clock, because Daddy isn’t about to entertain no

boyfriend (lol). However, in 2020, more parents are open to being involved in their children’s dating life. To a point where, my friend reminded me, our parents even prescribe partners for us. Listen, I remember a friend’s Dad asking me why I didn’t see his son as a potential… wait for it, not Bae but HUSBAND! Listen! Kuz! What kind?!? And, as awesome as my friend was and is, he wasn’t and isn’t for me like that. My other friend, keep up haha, the initial friend I mentioned. He said that something similar had happened to him. A lady friend told him that her Mom had said to her that she shouldn’t be single when she has such awesome friends whom she could (very Christianly) get with. Another friend says that she asked her uncle if she was too much of a nuisance to the family when he told her that if her singleness is due to an inability to choose somebody, she should let him hook her up. Like, really?! Now, the issue is not that our parents don’t know how to spot decent people in general. I have no doubt that they can or that they could. I mean, arranged marriages used to work, right? Yes, however, that was in a day and age where roles were clearly defined and a person’s purpose was semi determined from birth. In the present day, our parents hardly know us or understand where we are headed in life. I don’t just want a baby-daddy/ breadwinner, I want a life partner. And, for someone else to choose for me, they would have to understand my goals, dreams, ambitions and my vision. Unfortunately, many of our parents don’t get that in 2020.

BY KAY-DEE MASHILE

“There has never been a better time to be a woman! That’s because in today’s world, women have the power and the platform to change the status quo. The world has never been as aware as it is now that women can be both caring and powerful at the same time. That the power of a woman lies in her ability to make an impact while being empathetic… only time can tell what the future hold for us. THERE HAS, INDEED, NEVER BEEN A BETTER time to be a woman, and young, success women like the dynamic Stha Mavundla are living proof! When

asked to describe herself, Stha focused on 3 important Fs: family,

faith and fun! This KZN-born speaker

and life coach is a Science graduate and is currently based in Beijing,

China, where she has dedicated her life to inspire others to live out their

fullest potential. If moving half-way

across the world didn’t make is obvious enough, Stha really doesn’t mind getting out of her comfort zone! And the results of that are evident in her 10 year speaking career which

recently landed her on the stage of Cell C’s Take a Girl Child to Work opening conference in 2019. I had the privilege of chatting to the

AFROlutionary and there is no better

way to tell her story except in her own

words. So here is what she had to say regarding success, womanhood and the journey to self-discovery.

HOW DID YOU MAKE THE DECISION TO SHIFT FROM THE FIELD OF SCIENCE INTO SPEAKING AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP? A much as I love the sciences and can acknowledge that both my undergraduate and post graduate studies have shaped my critical thinking, I am simply not passionate about it. I just couldn’t see myself doing that in the long run, so I decided to pivot and pursue my entrepreneurial ventures. I am currently working for a training centre in Beijing, China while I disregard education at all, and I knew this when I decided to pause in the middle of my MSc. I’ve always been a business-minded person and I’d one day like to do my MBA. So, I will definitely go back to school someday. It was quite a difficult decision to take a break in the first place but I had my family’s support and that carried me through. CONSIDERING THE CHALLENGES THAT YOUNG PEOPLE ENCOUNTER ON THE JOURNEY TO SUCCESS, HOW DID YOU NAVIGATE YOUR WAY AND WHAT CONTRIBUTED TO YOUR SUCCESS STORY? My very first social media post was an intentional Instagram post on the 1st of December 2019. I posted a quote from the darkest place in my life. After hearing so many nos from interviewers and many other areas of my life, I had hit rock bottom. It took me gathering the courage to leave the toxic relationship I was in and making the decision to seek professional help and accept the support and help of my family to start building again from scratch. And it was in that state that I founded Zanda Zonke. This was a promise to me that all the promises and blessings of God do multiply. It is so close to my heart that my foundation is also named Zanda Zonke Foundation… after all I had been through, this gave me hope that zanda zonke iibusiso zika Nkulunkulu

In terms of business, I have partners and plans in place. But as far as purpose goes, I don’t always know how I’m gonna get there. I just know why I am doing it and that is because I want to make a difference. WHEN I FIRST SPOKE TO XABISO, I heard a spark in her voice. She had so much joy about her. One that I later learned was a testament of her being divinely repaired. So, when I started reading her story (from the very first page) I genuinely couldn’t reconcile how one can be that joyful after going through so much. And the only explanation I could find was that it had to be by the grace and goodness of God! There is undeniable beauty in every part of her story, she couldn’t have chosen a better title for her book. Beautifully Broken… It makes me think of the Japanese Kintsugi process where the pieces of broken vessels are put back together using melted gold. Reading Xabiso’s book makes me realise how God does the same with us. He picks us up from our most broken states, He gathers us from the darkest places and brings us under His light. Then He carefully examines our pieces, washes us clean and then begin to gracefully mend us. In mending us, as you can see through Xabiso’s testimony, He fills up all the cracks with pure gold. While it may sound glamorous, it is usually a very painful and lonely process. So, as you read Xabiso’s story, may you be restored and reminded that you are not alone.

MY NAME IS XABISO TSHABALALA MAQALA, I AM 30 YEARS OLD. But, with all the experiences that I have been through, I sometimes feel like I have lived on this earth for more than just 30 years. One thing that I can assure you of is that each and every single experience that I have had, no matter how hard or how painful it all was, served as enough proof to me that the love of God is without a doubt the unconditional kind and that his faithfulness towards us truly knows no end. Where do I begin?!

WONDER

So, at the age of 16 I became a mother. It took me a couple of years to finally forgive myself and let go of the self-torture of constantly thinking that I had disappointed my family with my teenage pregnancy. During all of those years of self-torture, I had no clue that God had my back and that HE knew exactly what HE was doing. Trust me when I say that having no clue of this fact made everything to be a little heavier than what it actually was. Despite all the support I received from my family and from my mother. Things became even heavier for me. So much so that I fell into a deep depression until I saw the

cannot describe the kind of a wound it all created within me. But I started seeing things differently when I saw the love between my mother and my son. It showed me that God had my back from way before I had a clue what would happen in my life, and this brought me the healing I so desperately needed. While in the process of healing from the wounds of depression and a teen pregnancy, life threw me another curveball. At the age of 25, I found out the man that I thought would be the love of my life was HIV positive. It wasn’t his HIV status that broke me though, it was the fact that he

As love would have it, I forgave him and further pursued a four year long relationship with him. Mind you, prior to committing to that relationship, I had committed my life to serving God. My relationship with God was at its strongest when I first entered into the relationship but saw my faith slip as I stayed longer. So it was no surprise when, four years later, I found myself living with my boyfriend. While we didn’t always have it all together financially, since I was a student at the time, we always had each other. He loved me in a tangible way that I could not deny. And, for the most part, love had been enough. But, it soon fell short. At the darkest point of our relationship, I had just found out that he had been cheating on me for a while and he thought that beating me would solve the situation. He had never been violent towards me and I certainly never thought that I would have to face physical abuse. You will have to read my book to get a full picture of the trauma that I went through that night.

YOU WILL HAVE TO READ MY BOOK TO GET A FULL PICTURE OF THE TRAUMA THAT I WENT THROUGH THAT NIGHT. YET, IN THE MIDST OF IT ALL, GOD SHOWED UP AND SAVED ME.

WONDER

While I had finally mastered the courage to close that chapter of my life, moving on didn’t come easy. It came with the challenges of having to disclose my HIV status and stand a chance to be rejected. Moving on with my Christian journey also meant that I would possibly be judged for having had contracted the virus through premarital sex. It also meant that I would be uncomfortable at every mention of an HIV positive patient at my workplace as a Registered Nurse. But it also meant that I would find healing for my heart and soul in God. It meant that I would find love in a man who recognised that who I am transcends the presence of a, now undetectable, virus in my body. It meant that I would be empathetic and compassionate to all kinds of hurting and broken people. The biggest blessing of all is that I get to share my story and, hopefully, get to impart some of the healing power of God that I have received

with all those who are still hurting. I hope that my book will give those in toxic relationships the courage to leave and those in healthy relationships the encouragement to keep on building. And that it will help alleviate some of the stigma attached to the HI Virus. Most importantly, I hope that my book will show off the wonderful love of God to all those who read it. These are hard things to comprehend, it is not easy to look in the mirror and value your reflection more after taking this reality. We went there thinking that we comprehended poverty, that we had a comprehensive idea of their struggles; but we did not, their needs were more paralysing than we had imagined. We had so much zeal to share the hope of the gospel to a nation in despair but oh, the Sudanese ministered to us in a very special way. They schooled us on how to maintain the right kind of attitude when walking through fires of sorrow overwhelmed with troubles. The force of courage in their eyes, their smiles and laughter accompanied by this glimmer of hope. You do not hear them lament they are not in despair at all, the manner in which they celebrate God will forever be a life time changing sermon for me.

INSIGHT

You could feel and see that God had truly matured the faith of our refugee brothers and sisters. As the Bible says in 2 Corinthians 4:7-9 “… we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair, persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.” The joy of the Lord is truly their strength and has helped them to regain their voices despite the fire under their feet. Indeed the Lord does not give as the world gives his grace is sufficient, his peace surpasses all human understanding. What an honour and privilege to have been part of this journey. The Sudanese diaspora will forever be an encouragement to me. KAY-DEE MASHILE INTERVIEWS MIKYLE DARIES

M I K Y L E ’ S TO P 5 T I P S TO B E C O M I N G A # R E A L A N D R AW M U S I C I A N From playing drums at the age of 4 to creating his own musical platform at 22, Mikyle Daries was destined to create music. But it wasn’t until he became intentional and put in the necessary work that this UWC Sociology rugby-playing major found his spot in the music industry. In his words, it isn’t what we do in the public eye that counts most. It is the hard work and consistency that take place in the background that count the most. In fact, Mikyle believes that talent only counts for 1% of what it takes to be a good artist. One needs to work at perfecting their skills through practice and training to be the best musician they can be. So, grab a pen and paper and make some notes as you read through Mikyle’s top 5 tips to becoming a #RealAndRaw musician:

1

KNOW YOUR MUSICAL IDENTITY People hear music, they don’t see it. Your brand should be built more around your sound than the way you look. So your first task is to find your musical identity and build your own sound. No one likes a copycat, people are looking for original and different sounds.

2

EXPRESS YOURSELF

BE DISCIPLINED This doesn’t only mean that you should practice all the time. It means knowing how to balance your musical life, holistically. It also means being mindful of who you surround yourself with and who you allow yourself to collaborate with. Be intentional about your sound and what you stand for and have that be the foundation for your standard. Also, discipline may mean that you sometimes have to give up certain things to make time and space for your music, consistency and hard work is key!

3

Be creative with your sound. Don’t box yourself into any specific genre or

style, rather allow yourself to show off all your colours and dimensions. It’s okay to draw inspiration from others, as long as it motivates you to express yourself more and not make you suppress yourself in efforts to fit in. People are listening because they want to hear you, allow the music to show them who you are.
