Some of us has been knocked off our feet by certain circumstances
A Heart of Thanksgiving
and on top of that we’re facing a pandemic with all of its attributes. Yet take a moment to stand in awe of the fact that you survived all the challenging moments since the 1 January 2020. Marvel at how far you have come, do a praise dance at how good God has been. Some of you survived a financial challenge, an illness, depression, a bad business deal, a difficult break up or rocky marriage. Some got married, started a new business and gave birth in this lockdown period or day before, now that’s commendable. I’m totally aware of the fact that some are still trying to walk through thick muddy waters, facing adverse circumstances. For one moment though, let’s push our list of difficulties to the side and start rejoicing in all our victories just in the past six months. No matter how minor or insignificant the victory might seem but let’s take a moment to celebrate. We celebrate birthdays, the start of a new business, the birth of a baby, a new marriage, a new job, your baby’s first steps or teeth that came out, a new skill that you acquired in this time, anything that brought a smile to your face and joy to your heart - we celebrate that. I’m reminded of Paul and Silas praying and singing to God’s glory in prison (Acts 16: 25). I would like to commend you for persevering, for choosing life, for navigating your spaces, and for coming this far. I acknowledge God’s grace, provision and protection in the last couple of months. Once again, this time reminded us that life can change in the blink of an eye, therefore this seems like a fitting time to take inventory on the good things that took place in our life. We’ve given much thought to the challenges and unpleasant things of this time, but I’d like to challenge you to take a moment and make a list (whether physically or mentally) of all the good things in your life. Those things are worth being thankful for.
“I would like to commend you for persevering, for choosing life, for navigating your spaces, and for coming this far.” Dearly beloveds,
L
AST WEEK I WAS SO CAUGHT UP in the idea that winter is upon us that I missed a very important point. We are at the half point mark of the year 2020! This new week, as I
embraced that thought, my heart was filled with gratitude as I considered it all. Six months ago, few people anticipated that life
I think one thing the pandemic has taught us is how to be more appreciative, take a moment to say thank you to your family, friends, anyone who has influenced your life in a positive way in the last couple of months, lastly we thank You Father God for Your grace, love and provision lavished upon our lives and carrying us through. We also rejoice in the firm knowing that You’ll carry us through the uncertainty of the next half of the year. Psalm 107:8-9 “Let them give thanks to the Lord for His lovingkindness, And for His wonderful acts to the children of men! For He satisfies the parched throat, and fills the hungry appetite with what is good.” May your heart be filled with thanksgiving. Stay warm and take care.
would unfold the way it did. When you start out a new year you don’t hope for challenges and difficult times - although you’re not naïve to believe that life would just be smooth sailing. JAYLEE GERTSE Editor, VOCA

7 FACTS ABOUT RAVI’S LIFE
REMEMBER
RAVI
1946 - 2020
1
ZACHARIAS WAS BORN to an Anglican family in India. He became a Christian after a failed suicide attempt when he was a teenager. After immigrating to Canada and marrying Margaret “Margie” Reynolds, he joined the Christian Missionary Alliance
and began traveling across the world as a preacher. His reputation received a huge boost from Reverend Billy Graham, who invited him to preach at his inaugural International Conference for Itinerant Evangelists in Amsterdam. Zacharias founded RZIM in 1984 and has been in high demand as a speaker ever since.
2
HE PREACHED IN MORE THAN 70 COUNTRIES and authored more than
30 books in his 48-year career, teaching Christians to engage with skeptics and arguing that the Christian worldview has robust answers to humanity’s existential questions. His best-selling book, Can Man Live Without God?, sold about 500,000 copies in 1995. His most recent book, The Logic of God: 52 Christian Essentials for the Heart and Mind, won the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association’s 2020 Christian book award in the Bible study category.
3
HE DID NOT GET INVOLVED IN POLITICAL CAMPAIGNS but befriended leaders in politics, particularly conservative Republicans. He mentored the son of Nikki Haley, the former South Carolina governor and ambassador to
the United Nations. Before his death, President Trump’s press secretary, Kayleigh McEnany, lauded him for reinforcing her faith. He also was close to baseball player Tim Tebow.

on culture war questions around abortion, transgenderism and homosexuality, which occasionally drew controversy before he would speak on campuses. He often engaged in a tense question-and-answer format with students who did not share his
views of a society in need of a Bible-based morality. One of his exchanges, at the University of Pennsylvania in 2014, received 2 million views on YouTube.
5
HIS FAMILY IMMIGRATED to Canada in 1966, and Rev. Zacharias spent a few years as a banquet manager for a hotel. He graduated in 1972 from Ontario Bible College (now Tyndale University) and received a master of divinity degree in 1976 from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, Ill. He was
a professor of evangelism at Alliance Theological Seminary in Nyack, N.Y, from 1980 to 1984.
7
Rapper, Lecrae admitted that he was an atheist and skeptic before. Even after receiving Christ, the rapper went through struggles and depression that nearly make him step away from faith. But “grace kept me”, he stated. For that reason, he would listen to Ravi’s lectures so that he can share it with his peers in the culture who have questions like “Why is there evil in the world?” and “Where is God in the midst of suffering ad injustice?”
RAVI ZACHARIAS HAS LEFT THIS WORLD for his heavenly home. Yet his powerful influence will remain with us, and he will long be remembered by believers around the world who have followed his teaching and ministry over many years. RZIM honours Ravi’s influential life with these thoughts, “Ravi’s heart was people. His
passion and life’s work centred on helping people understand the beauty of the gospel message of salvation. Our prayer is that, at his passing, more people will come to know the saving grace found in Jesus through Ravi’s legacy and the global team at

Ravi Zacharias International Ministries.”
HIS DAUGHTER SARAH Davis, the CEO of RZIM, sent out her own statement. “It was his Saviour, Jesus Christ, that my
dad always wanted most to talk about,” she wrote. “Even in his final days, until he lacked the energy and breath to speak, he turned every conversation to Jesus and what the Lord had done. He perpetually marvelled that God took a 17-year-old skeptic, defeated in hopelessness and unbelief, and called him into a life of glorious hope and belief in the truth of Scripture —a message he would carry across the globe for 48 years.”

BOT: Let’s get to the bottom of this‌
đ&#x;”?
NAVIGATING THE ONLINE JUNGLE BY Jaylee Gertse HETHER YOU’VE MASTERED the skills of successfully browsing the internet or have a great relationship with technology, the times we are navigating presently may prove to be challenging for all people. Those working from home or doing online learning may wholeheartedly agree. I’ll be sharing some tried and tested tips and tricks that would
W
possibly assist you in being more productive and less overwhelmed with your new way of working and learning. You can alter these tips to fit your unique circumstances. TIP 1: REMEMBER TO EAT. This may sound like a silly reminder, since many people complained about eating too much during the lockdown period. Although, it’s important to bear in mind, that when you get busy you may forget to eat, skip a meal or snack on unhealthy snacks. This will not boost productivity, especially since your body will need more fuel to stay productive during the winter season, this is an important reminder. Ways to ensure you eat healthy, regular meals is to prepare your individual meals, and place them next to your workspace together with the nutritional snacks. If the food is within eyesight, you’ll be more likely to remember to eat.
TIP 2: GET UP AND STRETCH every hour. You’re going to spend extensive amount of time in a seated position working on academics or work. Therefore, it’s beneficial for your posture, blood flow and muscles that you get up, move around and stretch regularly. Be reminded that resting is also part of the productivity cycle, so getting up from your workspace will allow you to give your eyes a break from the screen. TIP 3: CREATE A WORKSPACE. I know the colder weather may tempt you to work in your bed, but it may inhibit productivity. Your brain will connect the space where you work with productivity and your bed with rest. If you don’t create a separate workspace in your room or somewhere in the house your brain will stay alert when you go to bed or you might fall asleep in bed while working. TIP 4: MAKE YOUR WORKSPACE as comfortable as possible. As mentioned previously, you’ll be working in this space for an extensive number of hours. Thus, ensuring that this space is comfortable, and supports good posture will motivate you to work. Add a table and chair if you can. Don’t despise the wonder of a neck pillow, a cushion for your back, fleece blankets and a warm bean bag. If you’re warm and comfortable in your workspace you won’t long for your bed‌as much :)
“Don’t despise the wonder of a neck pillow, a cushion for your back, fleece blankets and a warm bean bag.

Don’t focus on what you can’t do today, do the things you can do. If we spend all our time thinking about what we have lost, we will not see what we have in our hands right now. God works with what we have, not with what we don’t have. The miracle is in your hands. “Being consistent in how you approach the task at hand will guard against feeling overwhelmed and anxious. “
TIP 5: KEEP WARM. Besides the blanket and warm bean bag it’s important to dress warmly - this will allow you to be able to work more comfortably. Instead of being so focused on being cold, you can instead focus on being more productive. TIP 6: DIVIDE YOUR WORK into smaller chunks. When you feel overwhelmed with the amount of work that needs to be done, break it up into smaller tasks. List what needs to be done, go down the list number by number, and tick off what you’ve accomplished. In this case looking at the whole, may be overwhelming, rather focus on the parts. TIP 7: STAY HYDRATED. Put water within reach to remind yourself to drink water. Due to the colder weather people tend to opt for other hot beverages, but an amazing way to consume your daily dose of water is to drink boiling water infused with cinnamon sticks, fresh ginger, lemon, orange or mint. Finally, with all these tips in mind, it will only be able to be implemented if you establish a daily working routine. This will greatly assist you in being most productive. Set out a window of time to work that will suit your needs. Being consistent in how you approach the task at hand will guard against feeling overwhelmed and anxious. Keep these tips in mind as you continue the mission to reach your goals.

E’RE IN THAT TIME OF THE YEAR where we surely can feel the winter chill creeping up on us. Bearing in mind that we’re not in full blown winter yet, the layers are
slowly but surely being piled on. In this time comfort over style probably reigns supreme, but this season and lockdown will prove that even comfort can be stylish. Last week we received a few lockdown style tips from Nicole Golding, one of which was to ditch the PJ’s and really put in the effort to wear something nice. Getting dressed in something that makes you feel good will do wonders for your mood and productivity. Leigh Matthys compiled a look book with some enter-into-winter style ideas. Just add on a scarf, beanie or jacket when you must leave the house for a quick grocery run. Don’t leave those sunglasses behind, the winter sun can also be damaging to your eyes, plus it adds some extra style to your look.

In fact, I miss my Walkman from back in the day. The day you were born, Crystal and I had an argument about half an hour before I rushed to find your mom at the hospital. I didn’t tell your mom, but Crystal was so mad that I didn’t want to go with her to the bioscope that afternoon. She just snapped the Walkman out of my hands and trampled on it.” Lance turns his head slightly and asks; “What the heck is wrong with these women?! Why must they be so mental?” Melvin shakes his head humorously. “Yeah, well, at least Crystal is a much calmer wife as opposed to the wild girlfriend she used to be. I don’t regret marrying her.” “That’s nice,” Lance responds feebly. “I pray you find the kind of love Crystal and I share, big guy.” “I doubt it, uncle Mel. I might as well be a ghost, like my nonexisting parents.”

“I named him Lance, and all he needs is me, his uncle Mel and infinite hugs.” Melvin chose not to disagree with a blurry-eyed Dawn, who muttered how exhausted she was, prior to falling asleep instantly.

WAYS TO STAY HEALTHY THIS WINTER
CONTROL YOUR CRAVINGS Carb intake tends to increase during this season. Eating more carbs increases secretion of serotonin hormone, which makes your brain think that you are happier, and makes you crave more food. In order to reduce cravings, eat a healthy breakfast with a good combination of carb and protein. Eat nuts, seeds and fruits when you experience your cravings and stay away from chips, chocolates, etc.

STAY WARM Keep yourself warm and wear clothes that cover you properly. Not dressing properly can make you prone to cold, cough and infections.
STAY HYDRATED Intake of water reduces during winter and this can be detrimental to your health, skin and hair. Sufficient water intake is important for your health, irrespective of the season. Drinking sufficient water will help you remain active even on cold winter days, and this in turn will keep you warm. Apart from water, you can bank on herbal teas and soups to keep you hydrated and warm in winter.

Four years later, FIFA World Cup Brazil drew the same staggering number of viewers.
