Fishing Tips SPINNING

ANGLING

Spinning is perhaps the most common way to fish in Sweden. It is based on casting out and winding in lures that imitate prey (usually a fish).

Few fishing methods offer greater variety than angling. Depending on what bait you choose it’s possible to catch any type of fish that can be found in Swedish waters. When fishing with bread or corn, you can catch carp fish such as roach or common bream, whilst you catch pike and perch with baitfish. There are primarily two different types of angling – bottom fishing (or legering) and float fishing.

Baits For this type of fishing, a variety of baits can be used, for example: • Spoon • Wobbler • Spinner • Jig Fish that bite • Pike • Perch • Zander • Salmon • Sea Trout • Rainbow Trout

FLY FISHING Fly fishing is traditionally used mainly for catching salmon, sea trout and rainbow trout. But the method can be used for most species, depending on the choice of fly. There are essentially three types of flies: dry flies that imitate insects on the surface, wet flies that imitate aquatic insects and streamers, which resemble fish. Baits • Dry Flies • Wet Flies • Streamers • Nymph Fish that bite • Salmon • Sea Trout • Rainbow Trout • Pike • Perch

Baits • Corn • Worm • Bread • Maggot • Shrimp etc. for Carp • Baitfish for predators Fish that bite • All types of fish that can be found in Swedish waters.

Large Pike lurking in the reeds SKIREN IS A 65 hectare lake located in

the Emån River basin in the northwest corner of Mönsterås Municipality. Beautiful surroundings, the habitat of loon and other species, make a fishing trip on Skiren a special nature experience. The lake has a rich variety – and great quantities of fish, especially roach and perch. PERCH ARE EVERYWHERE in the lake,

and float or bottom angling with a bunch of worms is a sure way of catching them.

Swap the worms for baitfish (also known as live bait) and you’ll have a good chance of catching a big one. Spinning with a wobbler or using a jig along the verges of deeper water is also a way to catch bigger perch. In winter, ice fishing for perch is also fun. This is an exciting fishing method, and if you find out where the perch are you can catch loads of fish. Since the 70s, Fliseryd’s sport fishing club has been seeding the lake every year with a small number of rainbow trout. These you’ll come in contact with

Skiren DIRECTIONS You’ll find the lake by following Finsjövägen in a northerly direction from Finsjö. After 10 km there is a bathing sign. Follow the signs through, turning left down to the car park by the lake.

through spinning with spinners or small wobblers and spoons. Fly fishing as also a popular method of catching rainbow trout in this lake.

Spin fishing with wobblers or angling with baitfish will raise your chances. Ice angling for pike is also popular.

THE LAKE IS also known for its big pike,

and specimens weighing over 8 kilos are regularly caught. Good areas for pike are around the vegetation at the southern end of the lake. In the northern part there are waterlilies growing adjacent to deeper water. Such areas are the haunt of big pike.

metres and a maximum depth of 8.9 metres. Some parts of the lake have rich vegetation in the form of water lilies and sedge. The protected, and very beautiful, red water lily can also be found in the lake. The water is best known for good perch fishing. Plenty of perch of all sizes occur scattered throughout the lake. Float or bottom angling with worms is the surest way to catch perch, but if you’re after a really large specimen you should spin or use baitfish. Suitable lures when spin fishing for large perch are wobbler and jig. Fish close to

deep water for the greatest chance of catching perch weighing over one kilogram! PIKE CAN ALSO be found in good num-

bers. Along the edges, among the reeds and other vegetation, where the wind blows towards the shore you’ll nearly always find pike. Shallow draft wobblers, spinners and spoons work well in shallow bays while deeper-going lures and jigs are preferable in the deeper reaches. FOR THE ANGLER with a zest for new

discoveries, Försjön can offer unexplored tench fishing. Bottom or float angling with bait such as worm, corn or shrimp in vegetated coves of between 0.5–3 metres depth may lead to surprises. It’s rumoured that there are some hefty tench swimming around under Försjön’s water lilies.

Grönskogssjön

Interesting for the sport angler GRÖNSKOGSSJÖN IS A 62 hectare sec-

tion of the Emån River that has been roped off. Fishing here is overseen by the Grönskog property, situated adjacent to the lake. The natural surroundings are varied and very beautiful. Old pastureland, deciduous and evergreen forests occur all along the lakeshore. THE PERCH POPULATION in Grönskogs-

sjön is very interesting from a sportfishing point of view. In addition to there being a high population of perch, on average they are also quite large. Perch can often be found around the straits and points where

there are strong currents. Angling with worms is an effective way to catch perch in such locations. However, angling with baitfish may be preferable if you’re after larger fish. Spinning using spinners, jigs or small wobblers is effective for big perch. BESIDES THE PERCH, you might also

like to try fishing for pike. Grönskogssjön contains large areas of vegetation that are suitable habitats for pike. The lake also contains large numbers of prey fish, which means that the conditions for big pike are good. Fishing in reed bays with wobblers or spoons is effective for pike, but even

the open waters can be interesting for pike fishing. There, it’s more appropriate to use trawling or float trawling. In the winter, Grönskogssjön offers exciting ice fishing for both pike and perch. Ice angling for pike is best effected using baitfish. You could try fishing in one of the lake’s deep craters, which pike often collect in during the winter. Jigging is the easiest way to catch perch. By moving around a bit as you fish and by drilling fresh holes at regular short intervals, you can find your way to where the perch are.

Emån Grönskog

Emå

Easy to find Salmon and Trout THE GRÖNSKOG PROPERTY, is situated

approximately 6 kilometres east of the Fliseryd village and supervises fishing in the nearby Emån River. The river here divides into five smaller tributaries. The environments in and around these are of widely differing character, which offers interesting sport fishing as well an out of the ordinary nature experience. Along the shore you’ll

be passing through pastureland, meadows, fields and forests in this scenic area. ALONG THE RIVER there are a number of

landscaped paths that increase accessibility to some of the most interesting fishing spots. Barbecue and picnic areas are also available. PRIMARILY, THE AREA is known for

salmon and sea trout. During March and April, August and September, you have the chance of catching some of these migratory fish. There are plenty of rapids along the way, which means that you’ll not have much trouble in finding good fishing spots for salmon and trout. In addition to salmon and trout fishing, it should be said that the Grönskog area also offers fine chub fishing. As the chub likes streams and rapids, it can be found in basically the same locations as the salmon and sea trout. ALONG THE MORE slow-flowing stretches,

especially in Laxfiskekvillen and Storån, you’ll find places that are ideal for pike fishing. The undulating river bed and close on 8 metre depth provides great potential for big pike. Float angling with baitfish is an exciting way to explore what might be lurking in the deep crevices.

High average weight of fish ACCESS TO FISHING in the Emån River

from the village of Emsfors and about 10 kilometres upstream, to Berggölsängarna, is leased to the Emsfors sport fishing club. The river is of varying character, with both slow-flowing water and rapids. The natural surroundings consist primarily of mixed forest. Parking is available at Hälleforshult on the north side of the river, at Ekeberg on the south side and in two places in the Emsfors village. Above all, it’s the salmon and sea trout fishing that this stretch of the river is known

for. Fishing is available on both sides of the river and mainly in the 15 pools that can be found along the route. Among these pools you can find all types of current conditions imaginable, contributing to varied fishing. SINCE THE EMSFORS power plant dam is

no longer there, the fish have free passage along this stretch, which makes for very good fishing conditions. The average weight of sea trout caught here is around 3.5 kilos. The largest ever caught, however, weighed no less than 13 kilos.

mån Emsfors DIRECTIONS To find the Emsfors village, take the exit towards Emsfors from the E22. The exit is located approximately 11 kilometres south of Oskarshamn, about 12 kilometres north of Mönsterås. The Emån River flows through the Emsfors village.

Exclusive Sea Trout fishing at Em’s old heritage Mansion THE COASTAL PARTS of the Mönsterås and

Oskarshamn municipalities are bounded by the lower reaches of the Emån River. This stretch of the river is leased to Ems Herrgård, and is widely known for its sea trout fishing. The mansion is located just before the place where the river enters the sea. The surroundings consist mainly of old pastureland bordered by woodland. In this environment there is an abundance of fallow deer, as part of the area is a wildlife reserve. THE EXCLUSIVE FISHING for large trout

at Em is considered to be among the best

in the world. The route boasts no less than eight of ten world records for fly-caught sea trout. The largest weighed in at a fabulous 15.3 kilos! Besides sea trout, salmon is also caught in Em’s waters, and a large number of specimens weighing over 20 kilos have been taken. As recently as 2008 a salmon weighing an incredible 26.62 kilos was caught. The Em fishing is managed by the Ulfsparre family at Ems Herrgård, who have been leasing the right to sport fishing along this stretch since 1924. Em’s waters extend from the estuary to the sea and about 4 kilometres upstream on both sides of the river.

The route begins at Ryssäng upstream from Finsjö and stretches down to Stockholmarna downstream from Gåsöl. Figgehults gård, a property situated downstream from Fliseryd village, also sells fishing licences for an approximately 8 kilometre long stretch on the opposite side of the river. This part of the river is very varied in character, with strong currents as well as slow-flowing water. The

surroundings are also varied, with pine forest, deciduous forest, meadows and pastures, all contributing to a serene and beautiful setting for the sport angler. UPSTREAM FROM FINSJÖ, in the area

around Busseströms, there are good opportunities for experiencing chub fishing of the highest calibre. Kvillen, which is a tributary of the Emån River, is essentially fast-flowing in character. Here you find, in addition to fishing for salmon and sea trout, suitable locations

The Höge

the Högemåla Dams

Catching Carp requires patience WEST OF THE E22 in central Mönsterås is

where you find the Högemåla dams. Fishing in the dams is managed by the Mönsterås Specimen Club. THE APPROXIMATELY 2 hectare dam

system was dug in 2002 as a nutrient trap in order to reduce hypertrophication in the sea. The dam sits in an arable landscape with

deciduous forest that in some places extends all the way down to the water’s edge. The high incidence of arable land in the area means that the dams are highly nutritious, which in turn contributes to excellent growth conditions for carp. The lush surroundings of the dams give you a taste of nature, despite their close proximity to Mönsterås.

emåla Dams IN THE DAM you’ll find various kinds of wild

carp, mirror carp and the so-called “splendour” carp which can weigh up to 9 kilos. There are also a number of grass carp of up to 8 kilos. Carp fishing is a challenge for the angler and requires great patience. But the reward is that much greater when a carp, after a long struggle, is finally in the net! Carp is best caught using bottom angling with boilies, corn or other classic carp bait. Fishing for carp is done almost exclusively with the help of a bite alarm which beeps when the fish takes your bait. This ensures that you will not have to sit and watch the rods during the long wait that carp fishing often involves. Common types of fish

Mön

Mönsterås Bay

Sweden’s best Perch fishing THE MORAINE ARCHIPELAGO that domina-

tes the Mönsterås region is unique to Kalmar Strait. One of the islands of the archipelago is Oknö, known for its excellent pike fishing. On the south side of the island you have Oknöviken and to the west, Trollsjön. So there are large areas to explore for the angler visiting Mönsterås. THE NATURAL SURROUNDINGS of Möns-

terås are dominated by shallow reed bays, where the pike stand close together during spring and autumn. Fishing is best done from a boat, which can be launched from one of the ramps in the area. The perch fishing in this region is widely known as among the best in the country. The chance of catching perch weighing more than 1 kilo is greater than in most other places, and fish over 1.5 kilos are regularly caught. Keep in mind that more people would like to experience the excitement of catching big

perch – we suggest you kindly return some of the fish you catch, especially the big ones. IN ADDITION TO good fishing for pike and

perch, it should also be mentioned that sea trout fishing around the outer parts of Oknö is good in the spring. If you use waders you can for example have access to the area around Törneskär. By boat the possibilities are perhaps even greater. From the ice-melt through to the month of May, depending on water temperature, the whitefish is swimming inshore along Oknö’s beaches. That’s when you have good chances of catching whitefish as the shoals are passing by. Bottom angling with worm is the most effective method. During the spring, there are usually several whitefish anglers sitting along Oknö’s beaches, and they are sure to give you good fishing tips if you ask them.

!

IMPORTANT – RULES

The free lure fishing regulations allow you to fish along the Mönsterås coast. But be aware that fishing for pike and perch is prohibited from 1 April – 31 May, and that there is a limitation in force on pike fishing for the rest of the year! Note also that there are protected areas around certain water courses.

nabben Bay Unbeatable Pike fishing TIMMERNABBEN BAY is in many ways

reminiscent of Mönsterås Bay. The innermost parts of the bay are nutritious and very shallow. The bays are lined with reeds for the most part. Here, furthest in, is where Kronobäcken and Oknebäcken flow into the sea. In these, since 2008 there is an artificial wetland, whose main purpose is to act as a spawning ground for pike. THANKS TO THE construction of the wetland

in the interior parts of the bay, there are now plenty of pike in the Timmernabben archipelago. During spring and late autumn these innermost parts are good for pike fishing, whilst the middle and outer parts are preferable when the water temperature is higher. For fishing in the shallow bays, jerkbait fishing is probably the most effective method, but you can also use more traditional baits. IF YOU’RE INTERESTED in angling, Timmer-

nabben Bay can offer you good fishing for a variety of carp. The nutritious archipelago provides good conditions for many species to grow quite large. The species found in the shallow bays include big ide, tench and common bream. IN TIMMERNABBEN’S OUTER archipelago

there is great potential for successful sea trout fishing. From the ice-melt through to the

month of May the sea trout swims inshore. The colder the water, the more you’ll find the sea trout in the shallow parts. Lures in the colours of blue/white, green/white, black/ silver etc. are always viable for sea trout.

Alsterån Natural population of Trout FÖRENINGEN FISKE & FRITID (The Fishing

& Recreation Association) leases a stretch of the Alsterån River between the Hornsjö power station and the Duveström power works. The stretch offers a varied habitat. BESIDES THE COMMONLY occurring spe-

cies such as perch, pike, eel, brown trout and whitefish, “ready to catch” fish are annually seeded – usually rainbow trout – into the Sandbäckhult portion of the river. One part of the river is reserved for fly fishing only. That entire stretch is turbulent and fast-flowing and therefore particularly suitable for fly fishing. Here, there’s also a natural population of brown trout. There are however other fastflowing parts of the river, with strong currents, at Boxfors, Karlsfors, Sandbäckshult and Rosenström. There are natural populations of trout in these streams, too.

DIRECTIONS To get to Sandbäckhult, follow route 34 in a north-westerly direction from Blomstermåla. After passing the railway crossing just north of Blomstermåla you take the second road to the left. After that, once again you take the second road to the left and that leads you to the Sandbäckhult village. From here you can choose from a number of different paths down to various fishing spots along the river.

FOR THOSE INTERESTED in fly fishing the

stretch at Näset is particularly suitable, as mentioned above. It features a flat rock from which you have a great view across the river, and which has been fitted out with benches, tables and a fireplace. There is also access to shelters. There are paths and trails along the river, which enable you to move along it comfortably. When you come to visit, it might be a good idea to start off from the double bridges in the Sandbäckhult area.

Numerous and large Pike IN THE NORTH-WESTERN part of the

THE LAKE HAS PIKE, perch and eel. From

Mönsterås municipality lies Norregöl. The 10 hectare lake has an average depth of 0.8 metres and a maximum depth of 3.5 metres. The environment around the lake is very beautiful and is a rare oasis in a region that otherwise does not have many lakes. At the southern end there is an overnight timber hut which is freely available to passers-by.

2013, fishing for seeded carp will also be offered. Pike fishing in this lake is very good, both in terms of number and size. Spin fishing with shallow-going baits is effective in the shallow vegetated parts of the lake. Spinners, spoons and lures all work well. Because of the lake’s small size, you can fish through the entire lake relatively quickly. Catches of over 10 pike per day are common. THE LAKE’S CHARACTER, with large areas

of shallow vegetated water, bodes well for the continuous growth of carp. Carp fishing is done almost exclusively by way of bottom fishing. Common baits are boilies, corn and various types of nuts. So-called bite alarms, which emit a beep when the fish takes the bait, are commonly used. This is a great help, since there is usually a long wait between bites. Carp fishing is available at the fishing locations landscaped by the Mönsterås Specimen Club.

the Pataholm the Pataholm archipelago

Suberb Sea Trout fishing THE PATAHOLM AREA is known for its excel-

lent fishing for large pike. The innermost part of the archipelago is shallow and dominated by reeds. To find deeper water, you need not travel far however. In the middle and outer archipelago the average depth is significantly greater, and around Saltors udde depths of up to six metres are not uncommon. This variation in depth provides great prospects for exciting sport fishing. In spring and autumn the inner bays are very good areas for catching pike. When fishing in warmer water, you can move out a little further into the archipelago to fish in the deeper parts where the water is colder. Along the verges of deeper water adjacent to rocks and islets are likely places for the big pike to be lurking. PERCH FISHING CAN also be good in this

area. Generally you will find perch in slightly deeper water than pike. In the reedy areas surrounding islands with close proximity to deeper water the fishing is usually good – especially if there are currents. Jig fishing with small fish-like jigs is a good method for catching perch of all sizes. The largest specimens of perch are caught on jigs of up to 12 centimetres. Another effective method, which above all can fool the largest perch, is angling with baitfish. The perch usually

swims near the bottom – consequently that’s where you should fish! THE OUTER PARTS of the Pataholm archi-

pelago are excellent for sea trout fishing. Saltors Udde is a particularly good place. Since the cape extends quite a distance into the sea, the trout’s migratory routes are accessible from land. Both sides of the cape can be good, but you should assume that the windward side is the best.
