For the new proposed Department of Interior Design, the idea behind the design is to create a professional work environment for design students that helps prepare them for the working world after graduation. In doing so, this helps create a smooth transition for students as well as provide them with state of the art facilities and design. Studies show that when students are in a well design environment grades and creativity is much higher than that of poor facilities. Currently, the Interior Design Department is located on Harrison street in the Pollak building, secluded from the rest of campus. On the fourth floor, the interior design department shares the floor with the fashion department so therefore space is limited. There are many problems that need to be solved including cluttered work environments, lack of resources such as materials lab and wood shop area. I would like to give the interior design department a new look that would make our department stand out. VCUarts Department of Interior Design graduate program is ranked as the #4 Interior Design graduate program in the south (regional schools) and #6 (national/ regional schools) by DesignIntelligence 2008 America’s Best Architecture & Design Schools. The undergraduate program is ranked #5 (regional schools). With these high rankings that VCU has obtained I think that it is necessary to accommodate the design students with proper facilities that we promote creativity and also bring more attention to the department.

survey A survey was handed out to seniors, juniors, sophomores, graduates and staff. The survey consisted of 3 questions asking the interior design department what their main complaints about the current building, if you could add or change anything what would it be, and their location to campus. These are the main concerns and complaints of the 31 people that took the survey.

main complaints poor circulation no workspace congested work environment outdated needs to reflect our field of design deteriorating building more interaction between the grades lack of pin up space lack of personal storage location to the rest of campus

fashion institute of design & merchandising- los angelos I really like this project because of the accents of color but also the simplicity of the design. I also really like how he breaks the space up with the different areas.

fashion institute of design & merchandising- orange county This campus is a great example of something that relates to my project. I really like the way that clive wilkinson uses bright colors in his spaces. I think that using color in spaces helps promote creativity. I also enjoy the very simple design that he uses but just enough detail.

fashion institute of design & merchandising- orange county FIDM Orange County -- A Dazzling New Campus FIDM Orange County is an ultra-modern campus featuring lofts, an indoor/outdoor student lounge, eye-popping colors, and a one-of-a-kind audio visual igloo. World-renowned architect Clive Wilkinson designed the campus and added unique touches such as bright color panels and unique built-in furniture. There is a strong indoor/outdoor connection as evidenced by the student lounge and the use of glass throughout the campus. The existing 53,000 square foot tilt-up warehouse building had been broken into three zones with concrete separating walls. To connect the different areas of the new campus together, Wilkinson planned strategic openings in the building shell that enabled a seamless circulation loop, some dramatic high public spaces, and direct connection to the new exterior courtyards. The Orange County campus was designed in response to the area’s growing importance as a business, cultural, and residential center.

I really like this office and warehouse because of the use of materials. The materials are very unconventional and that is what attracted me to this space. He also uses accent color here which I think is very nice.
