The Interior Design Department is currently located on Harrison street in the Pollak building, secluded from the rest of campus. On the fourth floor, the interior design department shares the floor with the fashion department so therefore space is limited. There are many problems that need to be solved including cluttered work environments, lack of storage, and no pin up/ critique space. I would like to give the Interior Design Department a new look that would make our department stand out as well as create more interaction between the grades, by keeping most of the spaces open. VCUarts Department of Interior Design graduate program is ranked as the #4 Interior Design graduate program in the south (regional schools) and #6 (national/ regional schools) by DesignIntelligence 2008 America’s Best Architecture & Design Schools. The undergraduate program is ranked #5 (regional schools). With these high rankings that VCU has obtained I think that it is necessary to accommodate the design students with proper facilities that promote creativity and also bring more attention to the department.

Smull Island Hospice and Birthing Retreat was designed for those who are in the process of losing a loved one or expecting a child. The design of the retreat focuses on interaction between the family staying in the unit. The units are placed over water and are accessible by boat, creating isolation and privacy. There are spaces where the family can interact together or have private time with a loved one separate from the rest of the family. The aesthetic of the interior is a very simple design, allowing the surrounding water be the main design element in the space.

Raw cafe was designed for the students of the School of the Arts at VCU. The site of the cafe, the Pollak building, is one of the outdated buildings on campus and is often overlooked by other students at VCU. The cafe gives students a place to eat, meet between classes, and show off their hard work and projects to the rest of the university. The overall design of Raw has an unfinished, natural aesthetic. The materials in the existing site were the inspiration for the concept and overall construction.

The overall inspirational factor of my design for Raw cafe was the booth that I designed. In the beginning phases of design, I started with a circular shape to enclose the user and from there I carried the organic form into the design of the outer structure. When repeating this form, it creates a skeletal structure which provides ambient lighting through the repetitive shell.

My last semester at VCU I took a watercolor class in which we traveled around Richmond and went to different types of places almost every class. We experimented in ways of seeing and representing space, as well as created a dialogue with the ideas that are inherent in the built environment.
