VISIONARY NEW DEVELOPMENTS DRIVEN BY CROSSRAIL
The beginning of a new era for London’s West End
Catalysts for true, dynamic change come in all manner of shapes and sizes. Often they are subtle or unseen; measures which shape and finesse that which they lie behind. Sometimes they are dramatic – seismic shifts which demand attention and bend things around them through force of spirit. Few can produce the raw impact Crossrail is having on the areas it touches. Few will have the profile which Crossrail will enjoy when it opens through its central section in 2018. Few will lead to a legacy as vivid as that which Crossrail will build. London’s West End is famed internationally for its roots in tradition and heritage; its history is palpable and experience unmatched. Crossrail will mark the latest step towards the future, a new era for an area becoming as recognised for its futuregazing as for illustrious past. It will shift the dial for an area which is leading the charge for global destinations seeking to captivate global audiences. The numbers involved are staggering. It is estimated that Crossrail will increase gross development value in the West End by at least £2.5bn, boosting retail sales in the area to £10bn annually for the first time – an average of £27m each day.
* TfL, Arup & New West End Company
200m passenger journeys will be made on Crossrail every year – increasing London’s rail capacity by a tenth. This will bring an estimated extra 60m visits to the West End, adding to the 200m already made to the area each year. Crossrail is a game changer. This book illustrates what the future holds for a West End connected by Crossrail. It demonstrates how development in the area is harnessing the growing excitement, how architecture is being inspired by the sheer opportunity presented and how a community is capitalising on an environment of change which is unlike anything yet seen in London. Crossrail is the catalyst the West End has been waiting for. It is paving the way for ambitious projects across the area. It is enticing fresh investment from across the world and concentrating the sense of adventure which is changing the face of the iconic streets. This is the beginning of a new era for London’s West End – welcome to the age of Crossrail.
