Boris Backs West End Jobs (Continued from front page) The pledge from West End and Knightsbridge businesses came after the Treasury revealed that it is to consider giving local areas the power to extend trading hours for retailers. Chancellor George Osborne cited New West End Company research in the announcement, confirming that an extra two hours of trading on Sunday would boost Central London businesses by £260m each year and provide over 2,000 additional full time retail jobs. When interviewed on the topic Boris Johnson, MP, Mayor of London, said: “Proposed changes to Sunday trading regulations could revolutionise the shopping experience for millions of Londoners and visitors to the city and enhance the capital’s position as an international shopping destination. We are now working to see how this can be best applied in the

West End, to bring it into line with our global competitors and generate the extra jobs and income the city needs.” The research, carried out by Volterra Partners, also reported that together with the launch of Crossrail, the potential extension of Sunday trading hours could lead to almost a 100% uplift in West End turnover, climbing from £8.8bn in 2014 to an estimated £16bn by 2025.

West End Sales To Reach £10bn By 2019 CGI Illustration of Tottenham Court Road Station Entrance

E

arlier this summer, New West End Company launched a look book of the multi-billion pound development work planned for the capital’s retail heartland as it gears up for millions of additional shoppers with the opening of Crossrail in 2018. Retail revenues in London’s West End are predicted to hit £10bn within a year of Crossrail opening. This will place London ahead of any other European city for retail and cement its place among the world’s top global destinations. New West End Company revealed a number of major building and public realm developments in the West End set to capitalise on the arrival of Crossrail. The scale of these projects is significant, and it is estimated they will have a

combined gross development value of £2.5bn. Richard Dickinson, Chief Executive of New West End Company said: “Crossrail has long been recognised as a game changer for the areas it touches, but the effect it has played in inspiring investment and innovation across the West End is staggering.” “Each one of these planned developments will bring an unparalleled uplift to the area. Together they will combine to ensure that our iconic streets continue to represent the pinnacle of shopping and leisure destinations into the future as they have through their illustrious past.” To find out more, or to request a copy of the look book, please contact Kristin at Kristin.Sauva@newwestend.com

Inspiring investment and innovation across the West End

Creating A One Stop Shop For Chinese Visas In June, the Government announced the first ever agreement between a Schengen country and the UK to share Visa Application Centres in China. This will allow Chinese visitors to apply for both a UK and Schengen visa at the same place and same time, effectively creating a one-stop-shop. The move was one of the key recommendations in the report into improving the visa application process in China, launched with the Home Secretary last June, by the UK China Visa Alliance, of which New West End Company is a founding member.

The Alliance’s other recommendation for creating a one-stop-shop, the sharing of application forms, has already been implemented by the Home Office. The pilot is with Belgium, which uses the same contractor as the UK to deliver its visa application service in China. Although Belgium only issues a small number of visitor visas in China each year (16,000 compared with UK 390,000 visitor visas in 2014) the move is significant as it paves the way for similar partnerships with other EU countries. None of the magic has worn off since, and Oxford Street in my eyes truly is one of the greatest shopping streets in the world. OXFORD STREET

West End Partnership Announces Oxford Street Vision

Richard Dickinson, Chief Executive, New West End Company, and the New London Architecture forum hosted “Realising the Oxford Street Vision” as part of the West End Partnership’s vision for the area, with key note speaker Carl Weisbrod, Chairman of New York City Planning who shared his learning from New York. The event was supported by guest speakers Cllr Robert Davis MBE, Deputy Leader, Westminster City Council and Lucy Musgrave, Founder, Publica. The arrival of Crossrail 1 from late 2018 provides a further catalyst to improve the quality

of the area and position it as the world’s favourite place to shop and visit. The partnership, supported by the property owners and retailers on Oxford Street, has drawn up a cross-cutting vision that will join with, and build on, complementary projects to transform the street and wider area. Reducing Traffic • A comprehensive reduction in vehicles of all types with greater use of suitable surrounding streets for loading, servicing and taxi pick-up. • Improvements in public

realm and prioritisation of pedestrians to create the right ambiance for a successful trading environment. Radically improve the street’s air quality and additional measures to reduce traffic accidents.

High Quality Public Realm • More space for pedestrians including ‘oasis’ spaces both on Oxford Street and side streets. • More robust management and maintenance that provides a safe, clean and welcoming environment with less street furniture and other clutter.

The West End Partnership, of which New West End Company is a key partner, launched a new and dynamic 15 year vision for London’s West End this year. Cllr Philippa Roe, Leader of Westminster City Council and Chair of the Partnership confirmed Oxford Street and Bond Street as two priority improvement projects.

The Vision for Oxford Street is that it should be the world’s best outdoor street shopping experience, complementing Regent Street and Bond Street by offering an unrivalled mix of flagship and branded stores. More than this, there is opportunity to integrate with a wider network of retailers, leisure and cultural attractions across the surrounding streets.

Creating Modern Retail Spaces Improvements to the scale and design of buildings with appropriately redeveloped stores. • A renewed mix of new and established retailers to provide a compelling shopping and visitor experience. • A seamless and intuitive system of shopper information online to guide visitors. • Greater investment in marketing to cement Oxford Street’s brand position both internationally and in the UK.

CHARTER FOR GROWTH

Our Charter For Growth New West End Company, a core supporter of the West End Partnership is working to deliver a shared vision for a strong and vibrant West End.

L

ondon’s West End is a major driver of the UK economy. We are the world’s leading tourist destination, the global retail capital, and major hub for overseas investment. Our key shopping streets of Bond Street, Oxford Street and Regent Street are world renowned welcoming 200 million visits spending £8.8bn each year. We prosper as a global city but we must stay nimble; modernising and improving our proposition to the world’s visitors and investors, playing an active role as a key member of the West End Partnership and its shared vision for a strong and vibrant West End. In May this year, Sir Peter Rogers held a series of Chairman’s Debates with you, our members, to understand

Our Charter for Growth outlines our business priorities to ensure the West End’s retail heartland continues to thrive for the next decade and beyond. We are in a strong position but we must continue to work together to ensure future growth and success.

your key business priorities not just in the year ahead but the next decade, with guest speakers including: Steve Norris, National Infrastructure Planning Association; Lord Adonis, Parliament; Sir Peter Hendy, formerly TfL now Network Rail; Conrad Bird, Prime Ministers Office and Kevin Farrow, CBRE plus key representatives from businesses including London Chamber of Commerce, Grosvenor, Appear Here, Gerald Eve, and Clean Air London among others. The debates drew out some of the most pertinent views and perspectives from a group which has a vested interest in the future of the West End on a number of the most challenging issues we face, including traffic reduction, air quality, business rates, and barriers to economic growth.

Although we are in strong place, to maintain our global position we must work together and have more enlightened policies and investment from all levels of Government to ensure we continue to thrive. The findings from the audience polls and speaker participation from the debates has helped formed the basis for our Charter for Growth, which lists our top 10 business priorities to 2025 - calling on more flexible regulations for trading on Sundays, tourist visas and tax-free shopping; immediate action on air quality and congestion; a brave approach to new infrastructure investment and a planning system that advances the West End’s global competitiveness.
