Thesis Project: Transforming Slums Through Architectural Empowerment The urban poor community is constantly increasing due to job availabilities in the city, especially in Asian countries. This thesis argues following the notion that the right to the city is a collective privilege—that the urban environment is for everyone to enjoy and benefit from. Through participation and appropriation of space and time, the right to the city becomes inclusive, allowing the urban poor to engage in and share the responsibility as well as the entitlement to the urban experience. This thesis explores design strategies that are capable of accommodating programs embedded in slums based on patterns of events and inhabitants. Investigations of space-defining elements, flexible apparatus, tectonic modular systems, and low-key sustainable technology are performed throughout this research to help define the best design solution. This project uses a slum in Manila as its site. Designing an architectural mediation to improve the spaces that slum dwellers occupy will empower them to strive for a better living condition, give them a sense of ownership, and instill an identity that will result in a strong communal foundation. In the end, the aim is to propose for a modular responsive architecture—an architecture that aims to empower through its usability and versatility.

Analytical representations of spatial, formal, tectonic, and programmatic qualities of slums around the world

porous: visual and physical enclosures are soft

hard: visual and physical enclosure converge to a point within the slum street creating a “sub-center

figure/ground: formal qualities of slum streets are expressed

oppressing/claustrophobic: personal space is almost non-existent

intimate: individual personal spaces collide

normal: personal spaces are respected

inclusivity: degree of physical enclosure within the streets of slums

public/private: adjacency of public and private spaces within the street section of slums

personal/communal: separation of personal and communal spaces and hardness or porosity of boundaries

American International University 7th @ Peachtree, Atlanta, GA The design concept that inspires this project is the celebration of the continuity of education. Ramps are located throughout the building, interconnecting the five departments within so that when one school of thought ends, the other seamlessly continues. Additionally, in response to the nature of its urban context, the university serves as an extension of the street. The classrooms, labs, offices, and such spaces within become buildings located along a boulevard that expands vertically.

Mixed-Used Zero-mile Post, Atlanta, GA

The goal of this project is to draw attention to the zero-mile marker in Atlanta, a historically important artifact that has been neglected and buried in the underground level of the city. Additionally, this project also aims to provide 70,000 square feet of office space as well as residential space. This mixed-use project uses water to draw the public into the area and activate two different levels of Atlanta.

Container Studios (artist live-work-play space) Krog @ Irwin, Atlanta, GA Inspired by the industrial history linked to the site, this project plays with the idea of incorporating shipping containers, which serve as live, work and play space, as movable and transformable modules activated by the clients. Recycled shipping containers move in and out of the gallery or the apartments through tracks, mimicking the railroad and loading docks that used to be the Belt Line. These modules embody the concept of instrumentalizing architecture; each shipping container can be uniquely positioned throughout the site, creating an architectural symphony.
