Charlottenlund

is an activity park located at the top of Tromsø´s inner green area, along a popular crosscountry skiing track that stretches from the southern tip of the island to the northern tip. The site is situated in a landscape that is popular in the winter time thanks to the skiing slope, but in the summer time the functional use of the site minimizes. The goal of this project is to work with the playful landscape and try to make Charlottenlund stronger as an all-year-round park. The idea of the platforms is that at particular times they follow the most common wind directions in Tromsø, that is northeast and southwest, so they can give shelter from these wind directions. The living shape of the platforms make different forms to create shelter and space underneath, which can, for example, be used at some pop-up events. The four platform stripes are connected to the smaller platforms by directions and material; these platforms have intergrated campfire areas and seats, and it is possible to place a lavvo tent on these platforms, for example in the end of the summer period.

History: Buying areas of Tromsøya was allowed after 1830, which many businessmen took advantage of. People began in around 1840 to build summer houses in these areas. Charlottenlund is one example, owned by Dr. Nissen. He named the area after his daughter Charlotte. A sportshotel was established in 1900, as well as an amusement park, restaurant, café and a telephone. The owner, Ludvig Abrahamsen, brought tourists and people from the center up to Charlottenlund with a horse and carriage. The place was again sold in 1917. Today the old sportshotel is gone, but the place is still used for amusement and fun. [source: wikipedia]

Cold air from the ground can’t reach some part of the platforms because they are elevated and make them more easier to be snowfree.
