YVA NATION, I am honoured and humbled to welcome you to the 10th anniversary of the YVAs! I am forever grateful to each and every single person that has helped us reach this milestone. Our recognition of Jamaica’s amazing talent through our fans is, and will continue to be, the driving force behind this show. To our sponsors, particularly those that have been with us from day one, your confidence in our vision cannot go unmentioned. We operate in an economic environment, which often makes it tremendously challenging for corporate entities to maintain their commitments to the various interests vying for their valuable investment. Bearing this in mind, we’re beyond proud and appreciate the many sponsors who stayed the course with us over this decade. MESSAGE FROM KAREN CLARKE, CEO, An Elegant Affair Events.
To past sponsors, we would like to express our sincere gratitude for your contribution. To our new sponsors, we look forward to you sharing in creating the evolution of the YVAs. Of course, there could be no YVAs without our amazing fans and our nominees! We would like to extend a special thank you to all that have supported the show over the years in

All I can divulge is that it is going to be SUPER EXCITING for our audiences while maintaining our commitment to bringing you the Caribbean’s hypest award show! Tonight, in the true spirit of the YVAs, will be an unforgettable experience! In closing, we give God the glory! For it is His guidance and grace that have brought us to our 10th anniversary. And it will be His mercy that will take us through the evolution of the YVAs #thankful #YVAsturns10 ENJOY! Tootles!

CLIFTON “SPECIALIST” DILLON (Special adviser in the Ministry of Youth, Culture, Entertainment Sports and Gender, Artist Manager and Producer) “I endorse it 150 percent! I applaud Karen Clarke for being so brave. Taking that step to create the show and maintaining it over the years is amazing. Whatever I can do to make YVAs better, I am here. It’s like another Christmas! The youth really look forward to it.
“Many awards shows have come and gone but YVAs is still standing. It’s long lasting and that’s why I give it my full support.” “It’s the only awards show in Jamaica that is along the lines of the international ones. We have to continue to support it so that we can be proud to know that we helped to build it.” “As long as I am around I will be a part of it. The purpose is to show up, be there and support each other…win lose or draw.”

“YVAs has contributed a recognized awards (show) where the audience makes the decisions. This gives it a certain amount of authenticity.” “ It has brought glamour and prestige to awards shows in Jamaica. No other awards ceremony has this kind of feel and edge.” “As an event it has added something different to the live scene and has consistently exposed young Jamaican audiences to international acts that would have otherwise not performed in Jamaica.” “In an industry where recognition is so important, the YVAs has done it and done it with style.”

KING
OF THE
DANCEHALL BEENIE MAN, YVAs Icon Award Recipient
Beenie Man’s unwavering commitment to his craft, tremendous talent and consistent production of brilliant dancehall music have placed the entertainer among a handful of artists that have the ability to appeal to audiences of all ages. Beenie can rock a crowd of any size, in any venue, across the globe. His style and swagger are enviable and artists, both established and upcoming take cues from this living legend. YVA Nation sat down with the dancehall royal to find out some of the secrets to his success. YN - You have enjoyed a successful career for many decades. How do you manage to stay relevant after all these years? BM – I stay relevant in this highly competitive industry of dancehall music just (by) making more music. (You have to) ensure the fans are supporting you. The music may not be played the way it is supposed to or promoted the right way but the fans still love it. You have to adapt and adjust and not let the person who 8
Y VA NATION MAGAZINE
came after you be more than you. You have to be above (their) level. If they’re making three songs a day you have to make 5!
BM - I’d like to collaborate with every artist in the world that makes music. Every artist that wants to do a collaboration-I am here, people!
YN - Was there another career path you would have considered if entertainment didn’t work out?
YN - You’ve been nominated and have won a number of Youth View Awards. What do these awards mean to you?
BM-I started music professionally at age 5 so there’s no other career path for I! YN - You’re an amazing performer. What’s your formula for maintaining your high energy on stage and keeping your audience engaged? BM –Once you touch the stage the people want to see you… you’re supposed to give the joy and energy so the (audience) can stay with you. Everyone comes to hear their special song and they appreciate you more (when you sing it). You keep them engaged by keeping them in the ‘music game’. Keep their eyes on you…everything you do they have to be looking at you. Like the pastor in the church; when he gets the people into the spirit he has their attention. You (have to) get them in the spirit very quick. Not at the 5th song…(do it) from the first song and don’t let them go until you come off the stage! YN - Who would you like to collaborate with (local and international)?
BM – Everything! It means the youth respect me. (That they’re) watching and listening and that they care about what I do. It’s a great thing to be recognized by the youth. YN - You were one of the first artistes to perform at the YVAs in 2008 when it all began. How do you think the YVAs has contributed to the entertainment industry? BM - Greatly. I thank you for the YVAs. Now the youth have a voice and their opinions about what they like and don’t like (are heard). The style, the fashion that they’re into and not into. It’s a great thing. YN - A lot of upcoming entertainers (and youth, in general) look up to you. What advice would you give to them to help them achieve success in their chosen careers, which may not necessarily involve working in the music business? BM – Believe in yourself and your parents. Believe in everything that your parents try to teach you. Try

to turn the positives into negatives. Listen to your parents (but also) listen to your own mind. They are not going through the struggles (that you are). They have passed that stage so it’s important that your mindset is in the right place. You have to listen to that inner voice within you and bring it out and even surprise your parents! That’s the best thing you can do. YN - What do you like to do in your down time? BM – I don’ t have much down time but when I do I watch TV. YN - What can fans expect from Beenie Man in 2017? BM – Hot music, hot album, hot songs. I’m going to make a TV series named Kingston. Long time mi a write mi script so look out for it!

WHAT'S H T DIY MUA\\ Like a perfectly arched brow, 2017 is shaping up to be a lot like 2016 with make up tutorials being among the most viewed content on YouTube or the ‘Gram.

BABY HAIR// Huge last summer, baby hair gelled down precisely on the forehead to form curls curls and waves is still stealing the spotlight in 2017. But the style isn’t new to Jamaica since we’ve been rocking baby hair forever!
“I wanted to take PUMA to a place with something unpredictable and unexpected.”
SHINE BRIGHT //Gloss is officially back. This 80s trend is popping up on catwalks everywhere but it’s especially wearable on the eyelids in metallics. Fab!
BLUSH, BABY// 2017 promises to be the year for cheekbones. Heavy blush in bold shades of pink or bronze or applied sparingly from temple to cheek will be major.
FENTY SLIDES// Rihanna’s recent collaboration with Puma spawned those cute furry slippers you’ve been seeing EVERYWHERE.

And that, she did! We think the songstress might just have a career in fashion as the perfect exit strategy (or side gig). BLEACHED JEANS \\ Super popular in the 1980s, fashion forecasters say this blast from the past will be big in 2017. Brands like Gucci and DSquared have already caught the wave so look out for this trend to become the next big thing.
Maximum Exposure: Dance is centrestage at the YVAs. From choreographed opening numbers to appearances by the best of dancehall’s solo and group acts, dance is a mainstay of the YVAs.
Dancing Rebel, nominee for the YVAs Dancer of the Year (Female) says the nomination is “more than a big recognition. I honestly didn’t expect it so soon, I feel more than honored.”
According to Pancho, member of the dance group, Team Caution, the recognition by the YVAs has contributed to (helping) dancing and dancers (gain) a greater level of respect. He encourages aspiring dancers to “keep going regardless of the naysayers, be productive and seek new knowledge on ways to improve your talent.”
Rebel began her career in the entertainment industry when she was 17 as a promotional hostess. “I started getting a buzz faster than I expected. I managed to maintain and pushed forward creating multiple dance moves with my team, Outshine”. YVAs choreographer, Sodanne Browne, believes that “the YVAs has given exposure to the depth of dance talent in Jamaica.” 14
Sodanne feels local dance like the music will continue to resonate globally because “it’s contagious.” “What I’d like to see is Jamaicans utilising our own culture more professionally so that we can benefit from it on a wider scale internationally,” she says. One of dancehall’s most recognized dancers, Ding Dong started dancing at a young age. He laments the lack of support from his recording artist counterparts who often go along with the common practice of hiring the services of foreign

dancers to deliver Jamaican dancehall dance moves when their videos are produced abroad. “The time is now for a collective effort. It’s time for us to be a part of these international videos and shows. That’s the only way dancers can benefit from it,” he says. Dancing since he was a kid, Ding Dong admits to sneaking out to go to dances as a teen. He maintains that it was the dancehall and dancing that kept him on a positive path and prevented him from falling prey to criminal activity.
He expresses tremendous appreciation to the YVAs for giving dancers maximum exposure “It has brought intensity and life to dancing in Jamaica.” “A lot of dancers are excited about the show. We prepare for it and work hard so that we can get nominated-it is our main focus at the start of the year.”
