LITERACY American Sign Language for Kids Learn vocabulary words, finger spelling, common everyday words, and conversational skills. Discover the importance of facial/body language and be exposed to aspects of deaf culture. American Sign Language - Parent and Me Ages 3 and under Babies and Toddlers can learn to communicate with their parents before they can speak! Sign language is an effective approach to introduce the concept of language to children at an early stage in development. Picture Me Reading! Grades K - 3 A six-week program for beginning and struggling readers that teaches the critical sight words necessary for reading success. Dr. Marlys Isaacson’s unique “Picture Me Reading!” method rapidly increases word recognition, fluency and selfconfidence. Permission to enroll based on reading assessment. PERSONAL & SPIRITUAL DEVELOPMENT FREE Educational Programs The Family Resource Center collaborates with local organizations to provide FREE educational classes. These classes are scheduled on – going throughout the year. Call the Family Resource Center at 619.269.1430 or e-mail sdkroc.frc@usw.salvationarmy.org for current information on dates, times, and locations. English as a Second Language (ESL) The Family Resource Center offers ESL classes in collaboration with Laubach Literacy. Free child care is provided for participants and incentives are provided for course completion. This course is offered twice a week, every week.

LIFE LIFEOPTIONS OPTIONS Life Options provides an opportunity for individuals age 55 and over to remain positively engaged in their communities while exploring educational, social and volunteer experiences. For current information call 619.269.1540 Arts & Crafts Class Enjoy sewing, crafting, jewelry making, knitting, crocheting, scrap booking and more. Bring your own projects to work on or purchase materials to make the projects demonstrated in class. Learn how and why crafting can help to keep your brain fit and your mind sharp. Practical Theater Class A senior theater class taught by a professional through San Diego Community College Continuing Education. Students are given scripts, pair up, and do rehearsal homework. For beginning and intermediate level actors. Brain Fitness The Brain Fitness Program Is a workout for the brain featuring six computer- based exercises. The exercises target roots of cognitive function that improve processing speed, working and narrative memory and sound discrimination, precision and sequencing. Preregistration is necessary: call 619.818.3953. Computer Basics Learn the basics of computer hardware and software. A basic class to acquaint you with skills that are used in most computer programs. CPR/FIRST AID TRAINING

Arts and literacy come together for a fun and engaging series of evenings. Each night features a themed presentation by one of San Diego’s premiere cultural institutions and an interactive art project from Young Audiences. Each family takes home a free book related to the evening’s theme! Takes place in the Education Center Multipurpose Room unless otherwise noted.

American Red Cross CPR & First Aid 16+ Learn Adult, Child & Infant CPR, First Aid, and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) usage. PERFORMING ARTS DANCE & MAKE MUSIC All classes are eight weeks in length, unless otherwise noted. No classes will be held on holidays; fees will be prorated accordingly. DANCE LIFE OPTIONS Students will be invited to participate in our February dance recital to be held in our beautiful Joan B. Kroc Worship Theatre. BALLET Ballet shoes and leotards are required for Ballet II and above. For recital purposes, please purchase pink ballet shoes for girls and black ballet shoes for boys. BALLET PROGRESSION AGES 3 – 6/ 7-10 4 – 7/7-10 6-10/ 10-14

Ballet I Students explore basic ballet steps while also learning rhythm and coordination. Ballet II Continue learning basic ballet steps and terminology while improving poise, rhythm, stretching and coordination through more advanced ballet combinations. *Previous experience or instructor approval required. Ballet III Ages 10-14 A more advanced version of Ballet II, students continue learning ballet combinations, rhythm, stretching and coordination. *Previous experience or instructor approval required. Session Fee: $130 Members/ $150 Guests Ballet/Jazz combo Beginning ballet and jazz taught through the use of imagery and repetition. The dancer will learn dance positions and terminology; while increasing their coordination, strength and flexibility. Dancer will also increase spatial awareness. Ballet/Tumbling Combo: Ages 3-5 Children will learn basic ballet steps. They will learn to improve coordination, increase body awareness, learn left and right, and have fun at the same time

OTHER DANCE STYLES LIFE OPTIONS Broadway Babies Ages 4 - 8 Have fun learning techniques to improve natural acting ability. This is a great introduction into the world of singing, dancing and acting for stage; and a wonderful place to learn self-expression! Hip hop for tots Ages 3-5 Tap those toes and stomp those heels! Tots interested in tap and hip-hop instruction come check out this class. The first half hour is focused on tap and the second on very basic hip-hop moves. See what magic your little one’s can create! Hip Hop (Beginning & Intermediate) Ages 8 - 13 Students will be taken on a wonderful journey with all the latest Hip Hop moves. Pilga: 18+ This class is a Pilates Yoga mix that will focus on stretching, physical rehabilitation from injuries, genetics, and even daily stress. This class is great core work and strength building. Jazz I Ages 6 - 10 Dancers will learn jazz terminology as well as rhythmic accents, turns, jumps, and choreography. Practice the pattern of center warm up, core strengthening, center stretching, across the floor turns, and jumps. Jazz II Ages 7 - 12 Dancers will learn jazz terminology as well as rhythmic accents, turns, jumps, and choreography. Practice the pattern of center warm up, core strengthening, center stretching, across the floor turns, and jumps. Jazz III Ages 11 - 15 A progression from Jazz II; Dancers will learn jazz terminology as well as rhythmic accents, turns, jumps, and choreography. Practice the pattern of center warm up, core strengthening, center stretching, across the floor turns, and jumps. Sing, Sign, Boogie! Ages 2 - 4 Start up that little engine and get those motor skills going! Toddlers will enjoy signing with their hands and dancing with their feet. A fun way to develop coordination and language through music and play.

Line Dancing

Ages 18 and over Come kick up your skirts and stomp your feet with some good ole fashion Line Dancing. We will focus on newly created line dances with traditional movements and stylized line dances that you’ll see in the Country Clubs. Boots and Cowboy Hats Welcome!! Yee-Haw!! THEATER LIFE OPTIONS Acting I Ages 8-13 Students will work on monologues, scenes, and performance organization. Lessons on improve, enunciation, projection, abolishing stage fright, and audition prep are also included. Students will be engaged in fun activities concentrating on working as a group which will later come into use onstage. JulyAugust session only. Broadway Dance Ages 7-12 A combination of dance styles commonly used in musical theatre. Learn musical theatre choreography and combinations while dancing to popular Broadway show tunes. Learn the movements necessary for musical theatre auditions from a professional choreographer. Monologue/Audition Tutelage Ages 8-16 Focus on individual development as an actor/actress to enhance performance capabilities.

DANCE CREATE – A – CLASS LIFE OPTIONS See a dance class listed that you’re interested in, but the time doesn’t fit your schedule? Then grab at least three friends and create-a-class! Acrobatics I- Beginning Ages 8 - 15 Learn basic tumbling skills while improving strength and flexibility. Skills include handstands, backbends and cartwheels. Skills include handstands, backbends and cartwheels and progress to more difficult skills such as back walkovers and aerials.


Tots Tumbling Ages 1-3 Introduces basic tumbling skills: coordination, flexibility, balance, strength and development of motor skills. Provides interaction with other toddlers. Parent participation is required. Clothing should not be restrictive. Session Fee: $50 Members/ $60 Guests Tumbling I Ages 3 - 5 This structured, high-energy class focuses on basic tumbling elements like somersaults and balancing.

FINE ARTS Painting for Pleasure Ages 9-13 and 13-18 Explore colors, painting techniques and alternatives. Using watercolors and acrylic paints, the artists will become more comfortable expressing themselves. Teen/Adult Photoshop Ages 13 - 18 Students learn the basics of Photoshop, a professional tool for photo editing and graphic design, and digital photography. Family Ceramics Ages 8+ An introduction to ceramic materials and processes. Students will learn how to make figurative sculptures, molds, work with the potter’s wheel, glazing techniques, and fire clay items. Fee: $90/members $110/guests

My Shapes Make Art Ages 5 - 8 Learn the basic essentials of art by using well-known shapes to create each piece with painting, drawing, and mixed media techniques. Each session has a different theme. Eco-Friendly Art Ages 6-12 A fun class encouraging students to be creative as they work with recycled materials to create wonderful works of art, beautifying the environment while helping it. Session Fee: $30 Members/ $40 Guests

COLOR ME RJ! HEY KIDS, use your imagination & creativity to bring me to life with color

Yoga and Art Ages 9 - 12 This class will be a combination of yoga moves and making art. The first half of each class we will do yoga, the second half will focus on an art project, using different materials and a new concept each time.
