KROC 2013 ANNUAL MAGAZINE

A NOTE FROM THE MAJORS

HELLO FRIENDS The San Diego Kroc Center celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2012. We are as committed in our second decade as we were the day we opened to providing a meaningful and pleasurable educational or recreational experience. We often speak of the dollar amount of Mrs. Kroc’s gift to the community, but what she really gave was not dollars, but opportunities to better ourselves. One of the best ways we can show our appreciation is to make full use of all of the Kroc Center resources. Many people come for one activity such as swimming, the fitness center, ice skating, or a class in dance, music or drama. We always encourage you to try something new to expand your personal horizons, or even get more connected by becoming a Kroc Center volunteer. The Kroc Center is for adults and children. You are never too young to begin a new activity. Wayne Gretzky was skating with 10-year-olds at six-years-old. By the time he was 10-years-old, he scored 378 goals and 139 assists, in just 85 games. It’s also never too late to discover hidden talents. The classic example is the renowned American folk artist, Grandma Moses. At the age of seventy-six, because of arthritis, she gave up embroidery and began to paint. She started by selling her paintings for $2 and $3 in a local drug store, but in November 2006, her work Sugaring Off, became her highest selling work at US $1.2 million. Perhaps your child is the next Wayne Gretzky. Perhaps you have a hidden talent as Grandma Moses did, so I hope you will take your time to casually peruse through this magazine. You’ll be surprised at some of the hidden gems of opportunity awaiting you here at the San Diego Kroc Center.

THE SALVATION ARMY’S MISSION The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian church. Its message is based on the Bible. Its ministry is motivated by the love of God. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.

THE SALVATION ARMY KROC CENTER’S PURPOSE In keeping with the mission and holistic approach of The Salvation Army, The Salvation Army Ray & Joan Kroc Corps Community Center provides opportunities that facilitate positive, life-changing experiences through: art, athletics, personal development, spiritual discovery and community service. The Salvation Army Kroc Center’s facilities, programs and services bridge the gap between potential and opportunity for children and adults, strengthen individuals and families, and enrich the lives of seniors.

JOAN KROC’S VISION Joan Kroc, wife of McDonald’s owner Ray Kroc, said that she took a tour of San Diego and it was then that she recognized a community that was in desperate need of a safe gathering place, a place with facilities and trained professionals to nurture children’s social skills, arts appreciation and athletic potential. Mrs. Kroc entrusted The Salvation Army with $87 million to build the first Kroc Center in the Rolando neighborhood of San Diego. Her vision of The Kroc Center as being a beacon of light and hope in the community. Sadly, she passed away a little more than a year after it opened. She was so pleased with what was accomplished here that she left $1.8 billion to The Salvation Army to build centers like this across the country. Today, there are 27 in different stages of development. See page 2 for a map of Kroc Centers across the United States.

PARTNERS IN COMMUNITY

VOLUNTEER MANAGER 619.269.1424 I first started working at the Kroc Center nine years ago as a Figure Skating Instructor in the Ice Arena. I enjoyed working here so much that I applied to be a full-time employee and am now the Kroc Center’s Volunteer Manager. While I still coach a few days a week, my main focus is growing our amazing volunteer department. The Kroc Center currently has 300 active volunteers who donate their time and talents. My hope is that by the end of 2013 we are approaching 450 active volunteers.

VOLUNTEER Q&A

CHRISTMAS TOY & JOY PROGRAM Serving Families in need with Food & Toy Assistance of each year, The Salvation Army Kroc Center’s 15,000 square foot indoor skatepark is transformed into a Toy & Joy Gift Shop, and is stocked with donated toys and food boxes for our Christmas assistance program. The toys and food come from partnership drives, and community donations in our area. This past Christmas, The Salvation Army Kroc Center offered toy and food assistance to nearly 600 families and 1,400 children in our immediate community. IN DECEMBER

All families who will receive toy and food assistance go through an intake process and are selected in November. Families are given a day and time to come to our Toy n’ Joy gift shop where they are paired with a volunteer, and choose two toys and a stocking stuffer for each of their children from a wide array of unwrapped toys.

This process offers a dignified way for parents to shop and bring home specially chosen gifts for their children. Each family also receives a food box and some receive food cards so they can purchase ingredients for a meal that is consistent with cultural traditions. Some families that demonstrate extreme need or dire circumstances are flagged to be adopted through our Adopt a Family program. Local families, businesses and service groups sign up to adopt these families, and receive a wish list of items not only for the children but also for the parents and household. Often these families need things as simple as socks, beds to sleep in, and jackets for cold weather. Stay tuned to www.kroccenter.org during the holiday season to find out how you can get involved in these Christmas efforts.

Q: Why should I volunteer? A: Volunteering at the Kroc Center is a great opportunity to meet new people, learn new skills and give back to the community all at the same time. Q: How do I become a volunteer? A: Becoming a volunteer is easy. First, call the Kroc Center Volunteer Department at 619.269.1424 to schedule a volunteer interview. Interviews are offered once a month. After your interview you will be asked to come in for an orientation and volunteer training. Once you have completed your orientation and filled out the appropriate paperwork we will place you in an appropriate volunteer position at the Kroc Center. Q: What kinds of Volunteer positions do you offer? A: We have so many different volunteer opportunities at the Kroc Center. We offer volunteer experiences in the areas of: administrative support, tutoring, food pantry assistance, coaching sports and everything in between. If you have a busy schedule you can volunteer weekly, monthly or only when special events come up. Check www.kroccenter.org for current opportunities.

DOING THE MOST GOOD

COMMUNITY PLAYGROUND BUILD 300 Volunteers Rally Together to Build a New Playground in 6 Hours! [BY KARLA PETERSON-UT San Diego] U-T Reporter Karla Peterson volunteered that day and wrote about her experiences. This is an excerpt from her article: PARK VOLUNTEERS SWING INTO ACTION, Originally published October 14, 2012 at 12:01 a.m.

TEST SUBJECT: Playground building at the Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center

THE BIG PICTURE: It has an ice arena, an aquatics center, an indoor skate park and a rock-climbing wall. But astoundingly enough, the 12.4-acre Kroc Center in San Diego did not have a playground. Until now. Thanks to the organizational skills of the KaBOOM! nonprofit playground-building organization, the corporate largesse of the Foresters life insurance company, and the sweat equity of a few hundred volunteers, the Kroc Center now has a purple-andturquoise climbing structure, swings and a picnic area where a big chunk of boring grass used to be. And it only took six hours, 45,360 square feet of safety surfacing and the magical ability to translate cryptic assembly instructions into heartfelt action. What happens when a few hundred amateurs spend their Saturday getting into the swing-set-and-slide business? A few sore muscles and a serious case of the feel-goods. Here is how it all played out.

WAKE-UP CALL: “We are going to build (a playground) in six hours,” KaBOOM! project honcho Josh Carlson said to the men, women, little kids and teens who gathered on the damp grass at 8:30 Saturday morning. “And it is going to be awesome and beautiful!” But it wasn’t awesome and beautiful yet. In fact, the play structure was in big, intimidating pieces all over the lawn. After the pep talk, volunteers split into teams to take on everything from mixing concrete and painting picnic tables to putting benches together and assembling the multilevel climbing structure. Suddenly, the bouncy castle set up to entertain the kids was looking mighty tempting.

The thingamajig’s connected to the whatzit: As a member of Team SpongeBob, I was part of the group in charge of the structure’s stairs and landing. And judging by the buckets of bolts and the piles of parts waiting for us, it was not going to be child’s play. “They told me it was going to be like making something from Ikea,” team leader Kelly Raabe said, pouring over the pages of directions. “For the record, this is not like Ikea.” Even after a KaBOOM! supervisor informed us that we had one of the toughest jobs, veteran Foresters volunteers Clay Kardozo and Tarra Keegan and newbie Ryan Birse did not seem overwhelmed. And while Raabe was expecting a team of 10, our team of five finished ahead of schedule and with good will to spare. “I think the kids are absolutely going to love this,” said Raabe, who works at the Kroc Center. “And I think the volunteers are as blessed as the kids are going to be.” Building a better day: As he stirred a wheelbarrow full of wet cement with a shovel, volunteer Michael Rodriguez was not feeling particularly blessed. The sun was hot, his shovel was unwieldy and he was wishing he had drawn playground-assembly duty instead. But when he found out where his concrete was going, the Grossmont College student’s mood brightened considerably. “This is going to the playground?” he said. “That’s OK, then. Without the base, there is no playground.” Meanwhile, on the other side of the field, Kroc Center Executive Director Maj. Rick Peacock looked at what people had managed to create and saw something even bigger. “For years, these volunteers will be able to come here and say to their friends and relatives, ‘I helped build that.’ It goes beyond today.” Peterson, Karla. “Playground building is feel-good fun.” UT San Diego . PARTNERS IN EDUCATION Teaming Up With Local Schools

At the groundbreaking for the San Diego Kroc Center in 1998, Joan Kroc told the story of former Mayor Maureen O’Connor taking her on a tour of San Diego. “What I saw left me with a persistent desire to do something to make life a little happier for families in those areas, particularly the children. I realized they desperately needed a safe gathering place, a place with facilities and trained professionals to nurture their social skills, arts appreciation and athletic potential. They need a center like this to replace some of the extra curricular activities that have been eliminated due to lack of funding (in schools).” Today, The Salvation Army Kroc Center regularly works with six partner elementary schools in the surrounding neighborhoods to help offset the cuts in arts and athletics instruction through grant funded, collaborative programs. With the resources to offer access to worldclass facilities and professional instruction in the arts and physical activity, Kroc Centers across the country are uniquely poised to serve as a resource to the education system, while engaging a new group of potential volunteers, members and program

A Childhood Obesity Prevention Program

THE KROC FIT KIDS Childhood Obesity Prevention Program was developed in response to expressed community needs for more physical education in our local elementary schools. A team of graduate students in the Masters of Nonprofit Leadership and Management program at USD conducted exhaustive research to determine proven methods of preventing childhood obesity among elementary school students. Through this research, it was determined that an intervention focused on: increased

minutes of physical activity, teacher and parent involvement, physical fitness curriculum and access to facilities would be most effective. The Kroc Fit Kids program model consists of four main research-based intervention components: 1) A 30-minute school assembly with a five-minute introduction on the im-

The Ellen Browning Scripps Foundation heard about the program and took a leap, funding the first year in 2011. After funding was secured, three partner elementary schools within walking distance of the Kroc Center were chosen to participate. Five-hundred third through fifth grade students took part in the first year of the program, which wrapped up in May of 2012. It is the Kroc Center’s hope that this program will fight the growing childhood obesity epidemic by building a bridge for

FREE FAMILY ARTS & LITERACY CONNECTION A Collaboration with Young Audiences of San Diego THE SALVATION ARMY KROC CENTER proudly partners with Young Audiences of San Diego to provide the Free Family Arts and Literacy Connection to more than 800 local elementary school students. This program started in 2003, and its purpose is to provide and promote arts performances and hands-on arts activities to underserved San Diego students and families. Young Audiences and Kroc Center staff go into local schools to teach a literacy based art project and the in-class component culminates with a multi-cultural themed event at the Kroc Center.

children who lack resources to access fitness programs and facilities. The Kroc Fit Kids program is now part of a National Demonstration Proposal and is slated to be duplicated at the Mississsippi Gulf Coast Kroc Center as a pilot. From there, national funding will be sought in hopes the program model can be duplicated at Kroc Centers across the country. “I see the children within our target schools thriving from the Kroc Fit Kids program,” says Kathryn Korn, Kroc Center Fitness Manager. “This added physical activity is something they enjoy and look forward to and teaches them not only health and fitness but team work and cooperation.” The Kroc Fit Kids Program went on hiatus during the 2012/2013 school year and will be back in the 2013/2014 school year, pending the identification of a funding partner.

One teacher from a participating classroom said “I’ve noticed that my students who participate in the art program have increased their awareness to concepts, broader thinking and are able to take more risk. They are confident in sharing their thinking, their artwork and feeling good about themselves, and I’ve noticed that this confidence transfers over to their reading and math abilities which ties to their test scores.” There are currently six themed evening events per year between October and May. The events invite families to experience the arts together and projects include people of all ages from toddler to grandparent. Young Audiences’ roster of artists for this program is culturally diverse and provides 30-minute performances and a 50-minute interactive or “hands-on”themed workshop during each Free Family Arts and Literacy Night event. Young Audiences is the oldest and largest nonprofit in San Diego County solely devoted to arts education. Affiliated with a 32-chapter national network,

YA provides arts education for students preschool through high school, bringing performing, visual and literary arts into young lives. YA presents in-school and after-school workshops and artist residencies, interactive school assemblies featuring music, dance, theater and storytelling, professional development in arts education for teachers and school administrators and family arts programs, connecting schools, community and families through the arts. Major funding for Young Audiences is provided by the City of San Diego Commission for Arts & Culture with additional support from the California Arts Council and the County of San Diego, businesses, foundations and individual donors. This year’s Family Arts and Literacy program is also funded in-part by the Dr. Seuss Foundation.

THE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM AT WORK A Scholarship Recipient’s Story EACH YEAR, thanks to generous community support, The Salvation Army Kroc Center provides nearly 3,000 membership and program scholarships to people of all ages in our service area. Of those, 866 are scholarships that provide one week of Day Camp to local children. One of those children is 7-year-old Jacob. Jacob has been a Kroc Day Camper at The Salvation Army Kroc Center for almost 4 years, where he has been a part of every summer, Thanksgiving, winter, and spring break day camp session. Kroc Center Day Camp is the only time Jacob gets to play outside, and he wouldn’t be able to participate in these camps without assistance from The Kroc Center Scholarship Fund. That’s because Jacob is being raised and supported by his mother who suffers from a debilitating and painful degenerative disk disease and who has had several major surgeries throughout life. As a result, she has never been able to keep Jacob physically active on her own, and the family’s only income is disability assistance. “It’s hard for energetic, but if I try to play Jacob’s mom. too, because I

me because he is so I risk hurting myself with him outside,” said “It’s hard emotionally know it’s so important

for a boy his age to stay active.” Jacob’s mom first learned about The Kroc Center when he came home from an event at the center with a Day Camp flyer inhand, and eagerly told her about the Kroc Day Camp and other programs. The cost of the programs was daunting at first, but the back of the flyer included information about The Kroc Center Scholarship Fund. It didn’t take long to apply and be approved for financial assistance, and Jacob enrolled in the 2009 Kroc Summer Day Camp and has been in every Day Camp since. Being involved in Kroc Day Camp has helped Jacob grow both physically and personally. Jacob’s mom says the camp counselors have helped to teach him values such as respect, sportsmanship, and kindness. “I see some of the same camp counselors every year, and they are always so happy to be there,” she said. “They welcome Jacob so cheerfully every morning, and it makes me feel so comfortable to leave him there for the day.” Having these scholarships available for kids like Jacob allows The Kroc Center to achieve its goal of providing children the opportunity to play and grow in a positive environment, regardless of their ability to pay.

Dustin Nickerson joined the Kroc Center staff Team back in September of 2012 as the new Membership and Rental Coordinator. Before that Dustin, his wife and their two children were members of the center. He and his wife often volunteered with a group of their friends from the community, and learned firsthand that this was a place to connect people to life-changing opportunities. Dustin was thrilled to join the team and to focus on helping to further the mission through engaging members, attracting new members, and reaching out to businesses in the community to forge new partnerships and stronger relationships. Please feel free to call Dustin anytime if you would like a tour or more information about membership, have an issue with your existing membership, or are interested in rental and partnership opportunities!

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

A STORY OF TRIUMPH Member Lauren Robinson loses 130 lbs & gains the support of a community [BY JULIE WILLIS-Public Relations Assistant]

WE KNOW THERE ARE A LOT OF GYMS to choose from in San Diego with various benefits and perks, but you’ll be hard-pressed to find a place to get fit and healthy that has the same sense of community, encouragement, and service that the Kroc Center has. Whether you are here to improve your personal fitness and wellness, to learn new skills or to shed pounds, Kroc Center member Lauren can be an inspiration to us all. In 2011, Lauren Robinson knew it was time to make a change and live a healthier lifestyle. She began taking water aerobics classes as a guest here at the Kroc Center, paying $5 for each class. It didn’t take long for Lauren to decide to become a member. Since then, she has lost more than 130 pounds from participating in a variety of Kroc Center fitness classes and programs. Lauren was thankful for the water aerobics class with instructor Margaret Nalty because it helped to give her a jump-start to begin her weight-loss goals. “As I lost more weight, Margaret encouraged me to move up in my fitness and take her step aerobics class. At first I was skeptical, but her support really helped me take the next step in this process.” In addition to taking fitness classes, Robinson has had several personal training sessions with Kroc Center trainers. She also participated in the Kroc Fit Challenge, an eight-week program “130 pounds ago, the only to improve health class my body could handle and wellness with a was water aerobics,” said team, guided by expert Lauren Robinson, a 2-year personal training staff.

Kroc Center member. “Now, I can do spin classes and other high-intensity classes that I take on a regular basis.”

Lauren says she has taken almost every fitness class that the Kroc Center gym has to offer, ranging from aerobics to cycle classes. One of her favorite things about the classes is that there is something different for everyone to try. She also loves the fact that every class is taught by an inspiring and supportive instructor. One of the ways instructors support her is by holding her accountable for exercising and taking fitness classes regularly.

2011

TODAY

“There are classes that I take every week because I know that other people are holding me accountable,” said Robinson. “Whether it’s Margaret, or other class members, we support each other. The more classes you come to, the more you become part of this special community.” When reflecting on how her life has changed over the past 18 months, she explained that she no longer has to worry about the small things such as “Will I fit in the airplane seat?” Or the big things such as “Am I going to die before I’m 40-years-old?” When she first started this process, she couldn’t walk a flight of stairs without breaking a sweat or feeling out of breath. Now, when a Kroc Center trainer tells her to run a flight of stairs four times, she laughs and asks, “Only four times?” Robinson continues to participate in Kroc Center fitness classes and programs to maintain her goal of exercising six times a week. She is self-motivated to lose an additional 60 pounds, which would be a total of 190 pounds lost. She believes it’s an achievable goal with the continued support from instructors, trainers and friends at The Kroc Center. “That’s the magic of The Kroc Center: you develop relationships here, and it builds a special community that helps you accomplish your goals.”

1

MAKE EXERCISE PART OF YOUR DAILY ROUTINE Exercise should be a part of your day, every day, not something periodic. Just as we set time aside for the other important things in our lives, our health and fitness should make it into our day as well. When first introducing a fitness routine into your daily schedule, start with a time and day that will regularly work for you. Planning a week ahead by choosing the days and times for your workouts and plugging them into your calendar, will make the routine easier to follow and harder to forget.

2

A PERSONAL TRAINER The great thing about having a personal trainer is not only their knowledge about which exercises are be best for you to reach your goals, but the motivation and encouragement they provide as well! When you schedule times to meet with your trainer, you have someone to hold you accountable; making it less likely that you’ll skip out on your workout at the last minute. Having a trainer also means you have someone to share your success with!

FIND A WORKOUT BUDDY On the days you aren’t working out with your trainer, find a buddy to go to the gym with, or take an exercise class with you. When you set a time and place to meet, you will be more likely to make it to your workout. This is another great way to be both accountable and encouraged by someone along the way.

5

FOCUS ON THE END RESULT Working out is work! There will be times when you’d rather skip the gym and relax in front of your favorite television show eating a bowl of popcorn. When motivation is lacking, remember why you’ve committed to your fitness program in the first place: your health and wellbeing. Once you get to the gym, you’ll be so glad that you came. No one ever regrets having worked out!

BE REALISTIC Your goals, your health and fitness program should fit in with your lifestyle. This means you may have to try several different modes of exercise before you find what is perfect for you. You never want to select an exercise that is boring and will make you miserable— you won’t reach your goals that way. If swimming outside makes you feel refreshed and strong, but jogging indoors on a treadmill is a chore that you dread, then go with what you enjoy.

3

4

6

MAKE IT FUN! Exercise really should be the best part of your day. There are so many forms of exercise that don’t feel like a begrudging workout. Try something new and exciting like taking a hip hop dance class, enrolling in Zumba, climbing the rock wall or going for a swim–it could be a blast! By incorporating new and exciting forms of exercise into your routine, you are much more likely to stay committed to your fitness goals long term.

DID YOU KNOW?

Relaxing can help maintain your weight. That’s right— Being stressed can interfere with how your body processes carbohydrates making it more likely that you will gain weight.

MEET KAT FITNESS MANAGER 619.269.1464 Kat has been in the Health and Fitness industry for over six years as a personal trainer, teaching group exercise classes and managing fitness facilities. WELCOME TO

KROC COMMUNITY CHURCH

DID YOU KNOW THE SALVATION ARMY IS A CHURCH?

“We are carriers of hope. A shoulder to cry on in desperate times. We are role models in business and everyday life, making a positive contribution to our communities. We are those who seek to be living examples of Christ’s love.” “...we are privileged to minister to men, women, and children, no matter their circumstances, and it could not happen if it were not for the absolute commitment of the soldier.”

WORSHIP at the KROC KROC COMMUNITY CHURCH

We offer a lively worship service, with teaching emphasizing holy living in the 21st Century. Dress code is comfortable to casual – you’ll see flip-flops and neckties in the same row!

SUNDAYS at 10:30AM 22

A PLACE FOR SPIRITUAL DISCOVERY In keeping with the mission of The Salvation Army, the church provides an embracing support system that not only helps people find Christ, but also provides opportunities that facilitate positive, life-changing experiences for people who need it the most. Church is a place where people can discover their spiritual being and their relationship with God, and then practice their faith with supportive and loving people surrounding them. No matter what a person has been through, where they come from, or where they see themselves in the future, The Kroc Center wants people to know that the doors of The Kroc Center Community Church are continually open. Those who are lost or seeking guidance will be cared about and unconditionally loved. The Kroc Church offers several programs to the community that are suitable for all ages, giving everyone the chance to worship in fun and exciting ways. Growth Groups are available to those who wish to discover biblical truths and inherit positive social values. Open share groups are also offered to people who want to fix issues such as anger management, chemical dependency, codependency and relationship issues, and dysfunctional family history issues. One of the best and most influential programs offered by the Kroc Church is Celebrate Recovery. Similar to Alcoholics Anonymous, Celebrate Recovery is a Christ-based approach to recovery from drug and alcohol addictions, sex addiction, eating disorders, sexual abuse, and more. However, people who attend the meetings see it as more of a celebration than a meeting, which allows them to

be in a more relaxed and open environment with people they can relate to on a spiritual level. Bryan Cook, the Director of Congregational Ministries at The Kroc Church, reported that more than 70 people attend Celebrate Recovery each week, and those people are coming from all over. Many of those people are coming from The Salvation Army’s Adult Rehabilitation Center (ARC) and many others are coming from the local community. These people are coming together and changing their lives in dramatic ways, allowing them to discover new opportunities. These changed lives represent the great work that is being done at The Kroc Church, in addition to the way God is working miracles for so many people. Cook explained that The Kroc Church has a goal to infuse the mission of The Salvation Army into the other areas of The Kroc Center and the local community. One way this is being done by starting a new program with The Kroc Center Arts & Education and local schools, where children can come and take a $10 percussion class, starting in January. When asked how simple care and support for children will guide them to spiritual discovery, Cook said, “Ultimately, when we show people that we care, we’re showing people that Jesus cares.” When you come to The Salvation Army Kroc Center Church, you can see that the staff and ministry team is more than just a church. It is a community, a support group, and a comfort zone for many. The team at The Kroc Church truly cares about you and hopes the community will join them in worship and discover their faith while creating a bright and hopeful future.

KROC PRO SKATER

SECTOR 9 SKATER CORY JUNEAU TALKS KROC [BY JULIE WILLIS -Public Relations Assistant]

When the Kroc Center was in its developing stages, Mrs. Kroc wanted to build something that kids in the community would love to be a part of. To be sure those kids were involved in the Kroc Center plans, she organized a youth committee and let the children decide what should be added to the blue prints. They convened and decided to add an indoor skatepark and Joan Kroc granted their wish. Today, the Kroc skatepark offers children an opportunity to enhance their athleticism and to discover a fun, and competitive sport. One child has even made his way to professional skateboarding after learning how to skate here at the Kroc skatepark. In 2006, a local 7-year-old boy named Cory Juneau came to the Kroc Center to learn how to skate, he improved everyday – faster than most kids. “My dad bought me and my brother skateboards and then we started coming here [to the Kroc skatepark] a lot after that,” said Cory. It was apparent to his father and others that he would quickly become a rising star. In fact, he received his first sponsorship when he was only 10-years-old from Sector 9, a company that has been manufacturing the highest quality skateboards since 1993.

24

CLIMB TO NEW HEIGHTS KROC ROCKWALL “The Kroc Center has helped a lot,” said Cory. “If it wasn’t for them I really wouldn’t be skating and be where I am today.”

Cory never received any coaching throughout his skateboarding career. His father, Kirk, believed it was only necessary to “set him free and let him learn,” and he did so starting at the Kroc skatepark. According to Kirk, Cory spent most of his time at the Kroc Center for the first five years of his career. He remembers that Cory was self-motivated and determined to improve everyday. “The Kroc Center has helped a lot,” said Cory. “If it wasn’t for them I really wouldn’t be skating and be where I am today.” Cory hopes to keep improving at the professional level the more he practices and competes. He still comes to the Kroc Center to skate with old friends, and teach other kids new techniques, and to improve his own skills.

The 36 ft. climbing tower offers six climbing routes which vary in difficulty. Make sure you touch the top for your climb to count! Don’t forget to check out the Recreation field, challenge course and playground! Suitable for soccer, flag football and other outdoor sports, the 55,000 square-foot field is bordered on the south by a challenge course consisting of several low and high rope course elements, and a 30-foot tall rockclimbing tower.

Funding Partner Spotlight

THE ELLEN BROWNING SCRIPPS FOUNDATION Making a Difference in Early Childhood Education Thanks to funding partner, The Ellen Browning Scripps Foundation, RJ’s Preschool Academy is now equipped with cutting edge learning technology, curriculum and resources. RJ’s Preschool Academy is a Christian Preschool, and the newest addition to The Salvation Army Kroc Center’s programs. The school serves children from 8-weeks to 5-years-old with quality early childhood education to prepare children for Kindergarten and beyond. Children from 2 to 5-years-old are learning the basic educational foundation that will ultimately prepare them for the rest of their lives and new technology can play a key role in this preparation. Last year, The Ellen Browning Scripps Foundation granted the school $20,000 to fund Hatch iStartSmart technology systems, Zoo-Phonics curriculum kits, and Handwriting Without Tears curriculum kits for classrooms. The grant also provided 500 new books for a mobile preschool library that can been wheeled from classroom to classroom, and a resource library for teachers. “These tools are benefiting the way children are learning basic fundamentals of letters, numbers, and shapes,” says Preschool Director, Janielle Wasser.

a major, positive impact on the social, emotional, language, and cognitive development of preschool children,” she said. Wasser also says these new technological tools are allowing preschoolers to interact in educational curriculums like never before. “We are one of the few preschools in San Diego that has Hatch systems,” said Wasser. “The kids love them – even the 2-year-olds can use them because they are touch screen and easy to use.” RJ’s Preschool Academy has also seen a lot of success with the Zoo-Phonics curriculum kit. Pre-kindergarteners have been impacted the most when they use it at Circle Time, where they use Zoo-Phonics for 15 minutes each day. It allows the children to learn letters and phonemic awareness in a fun and creative way, which parents love. Preschool teachers at RJ’s Preschool Academy are currently training for the new Handwriting Without Tears curriculum. They are excited to instill a strong handwriting foundation for children so they will be prepared for their kindergarten year. The addition of the books brings the gift full circle, as they provide an opportunity for children to use what they learn from the Hatch and Zoo-Phonics systems, and apply it by reading new stories and adventures in the books.

“When these new, advanced tools are used in a playful and supportive environment, the use of educational technology can have

GIVING THE GIFT OF WATER SAFETY TO FAMILIES KROC SWIM PROGAMS Whether you are 2-years-old or 80-years-old, comfortable in the water or terrified of it, The Salvation Army Kroc Center offers swimming programs that teach and develop swimming skills at any level.

THE HERVEY FAMILY FUND

They aproached the Kroc Center wih a plan to utilize the Kroc Center’s resources to get more local children swim-safe at no charge to them. The Hervey Family Fund provided two grants (in 2011 and 2012) to make the vision a reality. Over the past two years thanks to The Hervey Family Fund, the Kroc Center has provided potentially life-saving water skills classes to 500 local children.

A Personal Testimonial

[BY JULIE MARTIN - Aquatics Manager]

I was 17 years old when I started teaching swimming lessons at the water park I worked at as a lifeguard. The first day I came to work I was as nervous as a cat in a room full of rocking chairs. Six adorable little faces all looking up at me crying and screaming for their mom. I had never thought 4 year olds could be so intimidating, but somehow, I made it work. By the end of that class I had six adorable little faces smiling up at me and not wanting to get out of the pool. At that moment, I knew that I could make a difference by helping these kids learn skills that they would carry with them their entire lives. That summer I was also asked to teach private swimming lessons for a 6-yearold boy named Alex, who had special needs. He had a stroke when he was a baby and didn’t have very good mobility on the right side of his body. I wanted to help him. The day came for Alex’s first private swim lesson. I started with the basics. We had our work cut out for us and he knew I meant business and would push him hard, but he was such a determined little boy with a huge heart. He wanted to be a great swimmer and I knew he would do just fine. As time went on each week Alex worked hard to achieve his goal. The focus was for him to be able to be safe in the water. One day when he was holding onto the side of the pool wall catching his breath, I noticed him looking at the group lessons going on at the other end of the pool. I could see it on his face that wanted to be a part of those group lessons. I knew

in my heart that if I could make this happen for Alex that it would mean a lot to him and boost his self-esteem. I was going to do everything I could to make that happen. That day finally came. Alex showed for his usual private swim lesson and at the end of that lesson I told him I wanted to speak with him and his mom. He had a look of, oh no what is she going to say I need to work on now. We walked over to the parent waiting area and his mom came over and I said,” So I wanted to let you both know that I will no longer be able to give Alex private swim lessons”. They had a sad look on their faces. Then I said,” Because he is ready to be in group swim lessons”. They were so surprised! Alex couldn’t believe it. He was so happy and filled with joy. And at that very moment I knew that this is the work I wanted to dedicate my life to. I wanted to give others an opportunity to set goals, work hard, and achieve something that they could be proud of themselves for.

“At that very moment I knew that this is the work I wanted to dedicate my life to.”

All of this brings me to today, working for The Salvation Army Kroc Center as their Aquatics Manager. It is here that I am able to facilitate the enrichment of the lives of many children by giving them a place to come and learn water safety skills and stroke development in an encouraging, equipping, and engaging environment. It is also here that I am able to offer a one of a kind learn to swim program focused on building confidence and self-esteem and promoting social interaction, team work, and healthy living for our youth. Our values and mission are represented in each lesson by our instructors and taught throughout our curriculum. This gives our swimmers more than just a lesson; it builds their character and makes a positive difference in their life.

SAINTS Q&A WITH WOODY Q: What do kids get out of the Saints program here at The Kroc Center? A: Kids that are involved in the Saints program show true growth and development of not only their athletic skill level, but also their self-confidence. We want to prepare kids with the knowledge and the fundamentals to find success in high school, college, and maybe even beyond. More importantly, the program helps kids learn about core values such as respect, kindness, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Once you learn those values in sports, it’s easier to apply them to other more important things in life. Q: Tell me about the banquet at the end of the season. A: My favorite part is giving the medals to the players at the end of the season. To adults, medals don’t have a lot of meaning, but to kids they mean so much more. They can stare at the medal and know that they have accomplished something, and can be proud of their hard work. It’s the little stuff that can make the difference between helping a kid get on the right path or the wrong path. Q: You have a strong experience of playing collegiate sports and then coaching at the college level. How can you help the Saints kids get to that level? A: Of course, I want to help these kids learn how to play hoops and get them to a high level. But it’s important to emphasize that to get to that level, you can’t just focus on winning. You have to focus on how to be better, and what kind of person you need to be in order to get to that level. You must have a willingness to learn every step of the way. Q: What do you see for the future of the Saints program? A: The program is going really well and the coaches are a big part of it. Mainly, I really want to create an environment for these kids to work on something productive and positive. I hope this program only makes a better and stronger community for the kids to play sports. Q: Why is it important for a kid to get involved in something like the Saints? A: It will help kids grow up and understand what is important in life. They will learn how to be respectful and how to be a good teammate, no matter what the score is. That losing and disappointment are hard to deal with, and learning how to deal with those things in a sports environment will help them as they deal with other things in life. Saint’s focus is not so much on winning as it is for preparing these kids to succeed later in life no matter what they do.

MEET WOODY SPORTS & RECREATION MANAGER 619.269.1461 Woody Piirto joined the Kroc Center team in December of 2012 and has a true passion for sports and a heart for The Salvation Army’s Mission, and an impressive history in sports himself! Woody earned his Bachelors Degree in Sociology from the University of Colorado. During his time there, he also earned awards as a college basketball player and coach for the UC Boulder Buffaloes, an NCAA Division 1 Team. As a player, Woody made several appearances speaking to crowds at churches and schools about his experiences and the journey that led him to college basketball. During that time, he also spent summers leading and facilitating basketball camps at the University of Colorado and the University of Washington.

DEVELOPING TEAMWORK & SPORTSMANSHIP These youth sports leagues are designed to help improve children’s sports skills while emphasizing fun, sportsmanship, teamwork, and the development of self-esteem. The programs offer recreational play to all skill levels — and everybody plays! All players must attend the first day of practice for skill assessment in order to be placed on a team. Teams practice on Monday & Friday nights, with league play on Saturdays.

Woody went on to earn a Masters Degree in Sports Administration with an emphasis in Marketing from Seattle University. Before coming to The Kroc Center, Woody worked at an orphanage in Guatemala for 2 years leading a transformative physical education program for the children there. Woody will be overseeing our sports leagues, and recreation venues including the rockwall, skatepark and gymnasium.

DOING THE MOST GOOD The Kroc Center Ice Arena. After helping Cydell enhance his athletic ability in the ice arena, Galea and other Kroc Center associates were able to get Cydell playing at more competitive levels. At just 15-years-old, Cydell was playing in an 18- 21-year-old junior-level league. He played in the league for 4 years and spent his off-season at The Kroc Center to continue training with Galea. After juggling the decision to play hockey at the collegiate level or professional level, Cydell decided to follow his dream and play professionally. During the summer of 2012, Cydell attended a 2-week ECHL (East Coast Hockey League) open camp for the Ontario Reign, a team in the Premier ‘AA’ Hockey League. After the camp, he was one of only four people that made the cut out of more than 40 players that attended the camp.

KROC CENTER HOCKEY PLAYER IS PLAYING HIS WAY TO THE NHL [BY JULIE WILLIS-Public Relations Assistant]

MAKING IT to the “big leagues” in any sport is a special place reserved for those with the highest level of determination, skill, athleticism and sportsmanship. Children starting out in a sport are often coached to build a strong athletic foundation that they will work into their adulthood . Kroc Center member and minor league professional hockey player Weston Cydell, 21, is a prime example of never giving up. He has loved the sport of hockey since he was in diapers. Now, with some help from Kroc Center coaches, he is now playing hockey at the professional level. In 2002, his father recognized Cydell’s potential to play hockey competitively and discovered The Kroc Center’s Ice Arena and its Saints Hockey Club, which strives to create an experience for young athletes that will positively affect them well beyond the players days by encour-

aging, and developing, and administering the sport in a responsible manner. Cydell believes this program and the coaches helped him get to where he is today.

My coaches at The Kroc Center were really the ones that believed in me and encouraged me to take hockey to the next level. “My coach [Jason Galea] helped me see my true potential as a hockey player,” said Cydell. “He was really there for me, even off the ice. I could talk to him about anything.” Galea remembers watching Cydell play when he first came to The Kroc Center, and right away, he could tell that he was one of the most outstanding kids that had ever played at

However, the NHL lockout caused professional players to move down to lower levels in order to continue playing, which means that less spots became available for Cydell on the Ontario Reign. He is currently playing for the Louisiana Icegators, part of the SPHL (Southern Professional Hockey League). “He’s in a torturous situation because he has the motivation and drive to play at a higher level, but the NHL lockout iheld him back,” said Galea. “But at the same time, it’s almost a blessing because the league he is playing now is flooded with great talent because great players are being bumped down. It’s allowing Weston to play against them and improve his hockey game.” It is hard to say where Cydell will be next. He currently still has the dream and motivation to play professional hockey, and he hopes to be playing somewhere in the ECHL in the next few years. When asked where Cydell would be today if he never found The Kroc Center Ice Arena and the Saints Hockey Club, he said, “I probably wouldn’t even be playing hockey, I would just be going to school. My coaches at The Kroc Center were really the ones that believed in me and encouraged me to take hockey to the next level.”
